Dear Readers Welcome to the October issue of Island Magazines. Mention the word October and I automatically think of crisp Autumn leaves, cooler weather, sweaters and boots!!! Yet whilst writing this, the sun is shining and we have had a good few sunny days leading up to this point. The Island is nearly empty of visitors and although it is nice having them here it’s nice to get the Island back to ourselves. In this months issue there is an appeal to all readers for your help with the Rotary Christmas Shoebox Appeal to send presents to disadvantaged children and you will find full details of this on pages 10 and 11. The ‘Dates for your Diary’ is on pages 16 and 17 and although not quite as busy as the summer months there are still interesting events happening across the Island. I hope you enjoy this issue and please keep using the services of our advertisers and if you have any news or events happening in the future please feel free to send me the details. Until next month.

Gutter Clutter We are now into Autumn and the leaves will be falling from the trees and they could potentially be falling into and blocking your gutters which in turn could make your insurance null and void as most insurers now claim that gutter clearing falls under general maintenance and is something that should be looked at regularly. When your guttering is blocked the rain water will over flow and will eventually cause damage to the structural elements of the building, water will erode the building material and can ultimately cause damage to the foundations, drainage system and the paving. Internally, damp will appear and create mold and mildew that is not only bad for the building but also your health. Having your gutter cleared once a year will significantly reduce the risk of any blockages caused by leaves, moss or any other debris. This means that the water from your roof will flow directly to the drainage system and away from your property reducing the risks of damage to your property. Island Garden Timber Care offer the latest technology in gutter clearing saying goodbye to costly scaffolding and ladders their hi tech powered vacuum with portable video camera allows them to survey and clean gutters from ground level. Island Garden Timber Care also offer a patio, path and driveway cleaning and can get them looking like new again and they can also apply an appropriate high grade sealer which will make future maintenance much easier.
Are you fed up with your dirty paving? Does your timber need some TLC? We can get it looking like new again. WE ALSO OFFER

Town Mayor Report for East Cowes From Margaret Webster (Tel No: 01983 299082 and leave a message for the Mayor) We have been very lucky so far this month with it being recorded as the hottest September for many years. It has been rewarding watching the children of the community as well as visitors enjoying our wonderful Esplanade and all it has to offer. The Town Councillors agreed at their July meeting to finance a ground maintenance agreement to run up to 2019. This takes the pressure off the County Council and keeps are Town tidy. It was also decided to put the money that the Town Council pay the County Council to oversee the Esplanade Playpark and put it into the Environmental Officer’s budget to negotiate a new agreement with the IW Council for all inspections of play equipment in East Cowes, to be undertaken by The Environmental Officer on behalf of the Town Council. This was agreed by councillors present. The Town Council have agreed to pay extra monies for the grass cutting around the Esplanade paddling pool so as to prevent further incidences of blocked pumps and filters due to grass going into the pool. It is understood that the extra payment will allow for a grass box to be used when cutting this area in future. East Cowes Town Council have again commissioned a pantomime this year. The pantomime cast will again have local children and adults taking part. Auditions have taken place and I believe rehearsals have started. 6
We all look forward to some spectacular shows. Look out for ticket sales, it promises to be another fantastic show. The Town Council have responded to the IW Rights of Way Improvement Plan. It was resolved that the Town Council would like to see completion of the shared pathway between East Cowes and Newport. The Town Council met in August for a planning meeting to discuss and review the application for the Marina plan. After discussion and consideration our comments were sent to the planning officer dealing with this application. Our comments will now be on the Planning website. May I once again reassure residents that the Library is NOT CLOSING, it is going from strength to strength and if you would like to be part of the Team of volunteers, please go into the library and speak to our Library Co-ordinator, Mrs Diane Palmer? Diane will be pleased to have a chat with you and then you can decide if you wish to help. There will be an election taking place in East Cowes for a Town Councillor. By the time you read this you should have received your polling cards with instructions on which polling station you will need to visit. The date to remember is Thursday 6th October 2016. The Environmental Officer has asked that we remind residents that it is an offence to

East Cowes Business Association We’re now well into autumn, a time of cooler days and nights, with shorter evenings and darker mornings (although at the time of writing this, we’re still enjoying temperatures of up to 27oC so writing about the winter seems rather premature!)
developments within the town and share ideas how we can promote our members further.
The importance of shopping locally cannot be overemphasised, whether you’re buying a hammer, gift or newspaper, or even using the services of a plumber, electrician or planning a funeral. By spending money in your town you are contributing to the local economy and directly helping those businesses to stay in business. It sounds simple, but the more you can support local shops and services, the more money is generated and spent locally, resulting in increased inward investment (such as painted shop fronts) which benefits not only the property, but the neighbouring houses too. The whole area, quite simply, becomes ‘nicer’.
The committee is already working on organising the pancake races for next year, and as the event was so well supported by our two schools, and friends and family, we’re intending to have a couple of races for those not at school too! We are also thinking about the St George’s Celebration. The formats will be largely the same, with the exception that it will be bigger and better. If you would like to get involved, please contact us, we’d love to hear from you.
We’ve been heavily involved in the planning of the now infamous arch and various other signs around the town. Our latest projects are East Cowes is a great town for many reasons, to relaunch our website (which was hacked and not just for the free coffee in Waitrose. earlier in the year) with simpler, easier-to-use One of the things that I love most about it is the great community spirit that pulls together format which we hope will attract both locals and visitors to the town; to produce a business when needed, whether for some guerrilla leaflet to go to every household in East Cowes gardening, fund raising for a local cause or to organise a litter pick at on the town’s very own and to grow our network of members further. If you are involved in a business but are unsure of beach (which, by the way, is next happening on Sunday 23rd October at 11am, meet on the the benefits of joining, or simply keep putting it off, get in touch as soon as possible as we’d love Esplanade car park - this has been previously to include your business on both the leaflet and supported by young and old alike and is both website! fun and rewarding).
Many business people are put off by joining ECBA because they believe that there is a time commitment – there’s not! The ECBA committee is made up of a dozen people (all paid up members ourselves) who meet once a month to discuss local issues. We use this as an opportunity to share information and discuss any concerns that our members may have raised with us. We discuss new 8
If you would like to be added to the ECBA monthly e-newsletter, please get in touch. Several new businesses are about to open in the town and we hope to welcome them not only to the high street, but also to ECBA. A quick shout out to members, if you want to promote your business FOR FREE via our Twitter, Facebook or e-newsletter, drop us an e mail with the details, we’re here for you! Councillor Luisa Hillard – County Councillor for East Cowes. Phone/ text: 07964 869341 or email luisa.hillard@iow.gov.uk Change is in the air I think. We might think of Autumn as a time of endings and arrivals but I’m quite excited about new beginnings this month. I am therefore hoping that it is a fortuitous wind that blows this October, which is traditionally the time of gales. I will always remember 1987 and my Dad working as part of the Task Force to try and get services up and running again. The East Cowes Town Council has been advertising for a new Clerk and hopefully the successful candidate will be in place very soon to help innovate local projects and services. Personally, I look at Ventnor Town Council as an example of what we could be doing here, as they have an excellent Clerk with vision and enthusiasm.
I have to say that I’m very impressed and grateful for the support I have been receiving from local businesses, many of whom I have worked with over the last few years. Bestival has been and gone. The extra toilets and bins didn’t turn up as soon as they should have done but we managed to get everything into place.
You may have heard that, in September, the Council Executive voted in favour of accepting five refugee families from Syria to come and stay on the Isle of Wight. I fully support this decision and I’m deeply disturbed by many of the hateful comments I’ve read on news websites. To clarify, the UK government agreed to take a number of refugees into our country to ease the overcrowded camps where many I’m sad to say that the Chain Arch is not going women and children are living in appalling to be planted with Victorian heritage varieties and dangerous conditions. This is being funded from Osborne House, as I had intended. The by the international community and some of arch is now the responsibility of the Town that money is being passed to the Council to Council and they have decided to fill the pay for housing these families. I believe that this planters with concrete on the grounds of health will be in private, rented accommodation and and safety. will therefore not affect those on the Housing List. On the 6th October there could be a local election for a new Town Councillor. I hope that I hope that as a respectful and compassionate everyone will vote wisely to get someone with member of our community you will welcome passion and new ideas. I think that there should and support these families as they try to be an interesting selection of candidates to overcome the horror of being bombed out of choose from and every vote counts. their homes and seeing many of their friends and family murdered. When I was running for election as your County Councillor I asked every resident at the time, My next drop-in sessions may be on the 6th by means of a questionnaire through the door, October and 3rd November, 9.15am – 10.15am what you wanted in East Cowes. One of the at either Seabreeze Café or Artisan Pear (please repeated themes I have heard over the years check on the day). is that residents want more local shops, selling a wider range of products. I have therefore Until next month. decided to put my money where my mouth is (once again) and bring a disused shop back into Kind regards, use. Luisa 12

Speaking for the Trust, Ray Harrington-Vail said; “Every week we come across households who are paying up to £200 per year more than they should, due to them not talking to their energy company and getting the best deal.” “It isn’t just about switching supplier...”, explains Ray. “Showing people how to use their heating systems to best effect, can save money and keep people at a comfortable temperature. Replacing old dangerous white goods with new safe energy-efficient ones is also a wise thing to do. We can also arrange for grantfunded insulation of most homes.” “We are keen to hear from anyone who has concerns about their energy bills, we can be contacted on 822282 or by email at ray@footprint-trust.co.uk” The Trust would also like to hear from community and church groups who would like to be informed about the project.

A Hearty Homemade Soup We are coming into soup season and you can’t beat a homemade one… one of my favourites is butternut squash (this can also be done with pumpkin or a mixture of both) and I like to make a big batch so I have plenty left over to freeze and then I can just take it out the freezer in the morning and hey presto a home cooked soup for your evening meal with some nice fresh crusty bread!!! The beauty of this one is there is no fine chopping so it is quick and easy. You will need Knob of butter Tablespoon of oil 1 medium butternut squash or pumpkin, peeled, deseeded and cut into rough chunks. 2 medium onions, peeled and cut in to chunks 2 cloves of garlic 1 red pepper cut into chunks 1 teaspoon of cumin 2 teaspoon of coriander Salt and pepper 800 ml of vegetable or chicken stock Chilli flakes (optional)

Method Put a knob of butter and a tablespoon of oil into a saucepan and add the butternut squash, onion, garlic and pepper and stir. Add the cumin, coriander, chilli flakes and salt and pepper and cook for 5 minutes ensuring they don’t stick to the bottom of the pan. Add the vegetable or chicken stock until the vegetables are covered and simmer for 30 minutes or until all the vegetable are tender. Keep an eye on the stock level and add more if necessary. Remove from heat and carefully add to a blender, and blend until smooth. Return to the pot, and mix in any remaining stock to get the desired consistency. 19
