Welcome and thank you for picking up a copy of Island Magazines. We are now into the autumn months and no doubt like many you have been busy packing away the summer wardrobe and unpacking boots, jumpers and coats in preparation of the crisp mornings that will soon be upon us. Autumn is one of my favourite times of the year and we are very lucky living here with the countryside on our doorstep and amazing scenery that changes with each season. For dog owners its great news as it means our furry little friends are now allowed to play on all the beaches around the island. Halloween is at the end of the month and although the island is slowing down after summer there are still events happening and you can find our ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on pages 12 and 13. You will find the latest news and information for your area inside along with some great local businesses advertising their services. I hope you all have a great month and I look forward to catching up with you soon.

Getting Yourself Back on Your Feet Have you ever thought about how hard your feet work for you? Yet many of us neglect them and underestimate how important they are... in many cases they go the extra mile but along the way certain issues can crop up such as ingrowing toenails, corns, hard skin, verrucas and fungal infections, to name a few. It may be that through medical issues such as diabetes and the fact that none of us are getting any younger, even simple tasks such as nail trimming and cracked heels can become difficult to take care of and that is why you should always seek the help of a professional, and Steven Long not only ticks this box but he also offers a mobile service so all treatments can be carried out in the comfort of your own home, whilst relaxing in your own armchair. Steven is always happy to discuss your requirements and welcomes you to call him on 721987 or 07799 334900 to discuss how he can help you and make your life that little bit easier.

News Report from Town & County Cllr Karl Love - East Cowes. Email: karl.love@iow.gov.uk Facebook: Cllr Karl Love Autumn is one of my favourite times of year. I love to see the trees changing colour and I really like the crisp nights. There are many changes coming to our town community and we seem to be in a constant struggle with developers, Isle of Wight Council, its leadership and those wishing to force their visions of the future on our townspeople. We do urgently need a much better cohesive town development plan which looks at infrastructure as a priority and tries to resolve some of the many issues and problems that we currently have. I have articulated possible solutions to IWC which might help to future proof our existing island and road networks for transient Cross Solent hubs. An outof-town marshalling check in point for both red funnel and Wightlink should be considered. For instance near the Ryde/ Newport, Whippingham roundabout. This type of approach could feed traffic down into both Fishbourne and East Cowes without clogging our roads because the numbers are controlled from out of town. If you can only check-in at this one single point it means that we will not have traffic queueing in our streets because the yard will be managed more effectively. I have now asked for a review of our parking issues in East Cowes which could include the use of parking permit zones. However I will only do this if the people of our town in any set location join together and present me with a list of those residents in that road, in the majority, who wants such a scheme to be implemented. There are of course risks associated with this including having to pay for parking bays and no guarantee that the costs wouldn’t ever rise in the future.
I have also requested a strategic plan for our East Cowes Peninsula Development. I have also stated that a loan needs to be taken out to fund a replacement floating bridge vessel and that the loan can be repaid from profits made from a redesigned slimline and staffing efficient vessel. It seems to me that all of the floating bridge issues began when charging was introduced in significant numbers of additional staff were required at a high cost to collect the money off passengers. If you couple this with a quite frankly chaotic unreliable service and performance of the floating bridge one can see why it is now constantly operating at a loss. We know that the floating bridge can operate at a profit if it is managed effectively and the issues addressed. We need to replace it with a modern copy of floating bridge 5 and stop wasting millions of pounds trying to prop it up with sticking plaster solutions. I will not say much about the crossways development because by the time you read this report the closing date will be closed for planning application comments and we now await the planning hearing. Plans were also revealed in September for the development of a small estate in the Millfield Avenue area containing approximately 28 properties. No developer has yet been identified to carry this project forward which is in a mix development format . The impacts of building such a development over several years using Old Road for access and surrounding communities would be significant and especially given that Old Road does not have the infrastructure, without any pavements or traffic on schemes, to cope with a development of this type.
News Report from Cllr Karl Love continued There are some wonderful ideas currently being brought forward by community members and putting to plans and possible actions for the future including the development of a Victoria and Albert Museum in the old horseguards buildings. I’ve seen some really good ideas about how to restore the Esplanade and address some of the issues of the landslip. Again these have been brought forward by the community in the absence of any action by Isle of Wight Council. There are suggestions that Down House the former Doctors Surgery could be soon brought back into use. Anything which helps to tidy up the area would be a great benefit and appreciated by local people. I will keep you informed of any developments. As the Nights darken I ask residents to take care on our streets and always where something bright or reflective so that you can be seen crossing the streets especially on those roads where we have no pavements. I will be interested to hear your ideas about introducing a 20 mph speed limits in our community streets to try and improve road safety.
There is still no news about the connection of Hawthorn Meadows via Saunders Way or any development of the now approved development of self build properties. Discussions continue about the implementation of a coastal path which is proposed to break through farmland, Barton Manor, Osborne House and into Norris Castle connecting the coastal route. We will all have different opinions about whether this route should or should not be developed. There is considerable concern also been expressed in Whippingham about some of the rooting for this costal path which lies within a 5.5 km Special Protection conservation area for migrating birds. It won’t be long before the Brent geese return from their Siberian climates to roost and this is another reason why we must protect our coastal and green landscapes. I wish you all an enjoyable autumn and I’m always happy to receive your comments and suggestions.

Red Funnels terminal development is to be delayed in its construction as they continue to adapt and develop their plans and projects. At this time a matter of priority is the new road layout which connects traffic flow to the new terminal entrance. Your council and I continue to
ask for electronic signage to be placed to help guide and direct both ferry and the floating bridge traffic.

Early Detection Gives You a Fighting Chance One man dies every 45 minutes (around 11,800 men every year) from prostate cancer and it is now the leading cancer found in men but statistics show that if caught in the early stages, treatment is 80% effective. Mention the words Prostate Cancer and PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) Testing and most men will immediately conjure up an invasive and embarrassing testing procedure but in reality it is a simple blood test that is pain free and takes less than 5 minutes This simple BLOOD TEST measures the amount of antigen produced by the prostate entering the blood. It is not a diagnostic/direct test for cancer, but gives an indicator of the health of the prostate. Regular testing showing an increasing reading can indicate a prostate problem, a high reading should trigger further tests to determine if there is a need for any treatment. Unfortunately despite the increasing number of prostate cancer diagnosis and mortality, there is not a regular screening test, and some GP’s are reluctant to offer a PSA test to men over 50 years. Without screening, around 47,000 men are diagnosed General symptoms with prostate cancer each year. of problems with
the prostate are
50% of all men will have a health problem with their frequent need to prostate at some stage of their lives. It could be an urinate especially infection, enlargement or cancer. 15% will develop at night, bursting to prostate cancer and those with family history of the urinate, slow flow, disease or of African-Caribbean origin are 3 times difficult or painful (45%) more at risk but the main thing to think about flow, stop/start is that early detection gives you an above average fighting chance!!! dribbling, or blood in the urine The Charity Isle of Wight Prostate Cancer Support Group in partnership with Ryde Lions are offering FREE PSA blood testing for men aged 45 to 85 years on 19th October at Ryde Academy, Pell Lane, Ryde, PO33 3LN The testing will be conducted by trained phlebotomists taking blood from a vein in the arm, this will be analysed at a hospital laboratory and after a report has been produced by a Urological Consultant, the result will be sent to the person being tested within 7 – 10 working days. Every 45 minutes another man dies 10

I believe that Island people deserve to be listened to and have their issues represented properly to government by putting Island People First and at the centre of democracy. I would vote for the needs of our Island People, be transparent, inclusive and community focused.
I believe that our Health & Wellbeing comes first and that Education can be used to bring change, positivity, employment and reward. We need more NHS and Teaching staff to reduce waiting times and raise education standards. I believe that our island is changing for the better and that we continue to work together within communities to change attitudes, support one another and create our own destinies. Regeneration is not just about building houses it’s about creating better employment opportunities, family choices, mental health and environment matters and it requires improved investment. It’s all happening at Our Place A new monthly drop-in centre with a difference is due to open in East Cowes Town Hall on Thursday 10th October. “Our Place” will be a place of welcome, with free refreshments, co-ordinated by Churches Together in East Cowes and Whippingham. As well as having a hot drink and biscuits, anyone visiting will be able to access a number of help stations from local agencies. At the launch session, the agencies represented will include Sight for Wight, the Stroke Association, the Royal British Legion and Community Spirited, among others. A number of further associations have also expressed an interest in taking part. It is hoped that local people will tell the organisers what sort of agencies would be most valued as participants so that appropriate local provision of advice can be made. “Our Place” takes its name from the immensely successful drop-in already operating in Freshwater, and it is hoped that the East Cowes drop-in will both learn from the experiences of the Freshwater team and achieve a comparable degree of success. If the project takes off, the co-ordinators at East Cowes would like to see it grow to a weekly rather than monthly resource for the whole community. Rev Susan Paterson, one of the leading co-ordinators at East Cowes, said, “We were so inspired by the way the churches in West Wight had responded to the needs of their community and made such a 14
wonderful resource available in Freshwater that as members of the local Churches Together group here we wanted to see if we could replicate their excellent work. There is a crying need for services which otherwise people might have to travel in to Newport or Cowes to find, and if we can help in any way we see it as a privilege to be involved.” Our Place in East Cowes will initially operate from 10-12.00 on the second Thursday of the month for three months and be reviewed in the New Year. For further details or to book a stand contact Rev Susan Paterson (Email: revspaterson@gmail.com) or speak to any local church leader.

A huge thank you to the 947 of you who completed the on-line or paper survey conducted jointly with Whippingham Parish Council about the Crossways Development and to the 180 residents who attended the Public Meeting held at the Town Hall on 7th September. The Town Council is opposed to this development and has made a full submission to the Planning Authority. Hopefully many members of the public have also responded making it very clear that this is not in the best interests of the town or the Island. Hearing the views of the people of the town are very important to the Town Council. Many of you will remember the consultation that took place last autumn when your opinions were sought about what our priorities should be. The Town 16
Council budget was set bearing in mind the results. The Town Council is running another event this year where you can give your views in person completing a questionnaire at the Town Hall on Friday 4th October 1.00-5.00pm and Saturday 5th October 11.00am- 4.00pm. Alternatively you might prefer to complete an online survey on the Town Council website. Remember that if you do not have a computer at home there are two public access computers in the library you can use. Please take part and encourage your friends and neighbours to do the same. The Town Council is busy working on a new improved website and hopes to launch it in November. The new site will be more accessible and good to view on any device. Thank you to everyone who took part in the litter pick from the Parkside Pavilion. Keeping our surroundings clean and tidy benefits everyone. Did you know that part of the precept goes towards the collection of rubbish? The Town Council pays for the installation of new bins and every time a bin is emptied it costs £2.45. Octobers Full Council Meeting will take place at 7.00pm (6.30pm if planning matters are to be considered) on Thursday 17th at the Town Hall. As always members of the public are welcome to attend. Agendas are displayed on the noticeboards outside the Town Hall and at the Bumblebee Playground as well as on the Council’s website.

A Game of Conkers Autumn is coming and if you are of a certain age you will probably remember scrabbling around on your hands and knees underneath a horse chestnut tree looking for the biggest and baddest conkers which would knock your opponents to pieces!! Back in the day a game of conkers was a healthy playground activity in which you pitched yourself against another person and take turns hitting each other’s conker with your own. One player lets theirs dangle on the full length of the string while the other player swings and hits. To prepare your conker for battle a hole had to be drilled or made in the middle and a piece of string or shoelace was threaded through with a large knot at one end to secure in place. Yes I admit it could get a little rough at times especially if you were unlucky enough to receive a whack on the knuckles. It does take you by surprise and gives a sting but it certainly was never life threatening and it is such a shame that this tradition has faded out over time and is no longer found in the playground. Of course everyone wanted to win so those that were really competitive weren’t afraid to cheat by making their conker as hard as a rock. I was never involved in this type of skulduggery but I understand
that some people baked them in the oven or put them in vinegar and apparently if you keep them for a year they naturally harden. I like to think back on my memories and remember that if ever I did win a game it was through skill and determination and nothing else!!! The first recorded game of conkers using horse chestnuts was on the Isle of Wight in 1848. There is uncertainty of the origins of the name. The name may come from the dialect word conker, meaning “knock out” (perhaps related to French conque meaning a conch, as the game was originally played using snail shells and small bits of string) The name may also be influenced by the verb conquer, as earlier games involving shells and hazelnuts have also been called conquerors. In 1965 the World Conker Championships were set up in Ashton (near Oundle) Northamptonshire, England, and still take place on the second Sunday of October every year. In 2004, an audience of 5,000 turned up to watch more than 500 competitors from all over the world. The 2016 Championship was featured on the BBC programme “Countryfile”. Apparently on finding your first conker of the season, you should say “oddly oddly onker my first conker”. This ensures good fortune and few tangles throughout the coming season.
