Full Service Has Recommenced Some great news to share this month is that Jones Taxi Service are back to running a full service getting everyone from A to B. They have been slowly increasing availability over the last couple of weeks and have ensured that all Government guidelines are being followed with cleaning and surface sanitisation. Everyone must always wear a mask or face covering to safeguard passengers and drivers. Jones Taxi Service provide a vital service to residents and visitors of East Cowes. For some it is a lifeline to getting out into the community, to try and bring back a small part of normality to their lives, whether it is a weekly trip to the hairdresser or supermarket, to visit friends or to pick up and take to the ferry or floating bridge (when it is working).

Another month has passed, and our summer was extended with some beautiful sunny days in September. As I write this the sun is still shining but there is now a definite nip in the air both early in the morning and late in the evening showing us that Autumn is here. Autumn is a great season and I always use the time to have a good clear out when putting away the summer clothes and bringing out jumpers and boots. The island is a great place for autumnal walks, and we get to see the countryside change with the season. This is also the time of year when you need to give yourself a health check to get you through the next few months. As well as Covid hanging around, now is also the time when colds, coughs and flu viruses are looking for their next victims. On page 12 you will find some top tips on how you can help yourself and boost your immune system from local Nutritionist Michele Newton. Inside you will find the regular news reports and some interesting feature articles and advertisers. On pages 10 and 11 you will find the puzzle section, which is great for keeping your brain active especially while the nights are drawing in. I hope you enjoy reading this issue and I hope you all keep safe and well and I look forward to catching up with you again next month and in the meantime if you have any news you would like to share please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Sadly, at this time, things have taken a step The point I keep making is that we have backwards as we had always anticipated not been offered any additional parking with the spread of this virus. Again, we however I suspect that we will in fact now must continue keeping our social distances be offered the use of the Maresfield Road as directed by the law for our own safety. It is extremely difficult to write a report about car park which I also suspect will become pay-and-display. As I have said previously something which is changing so quickly there is a great deal going on in our town however our scientists and doctors are and sometimes this means that it takes making good progress and it’s something which cannot be rushed. As Stated at the scrutiny meeting in September, myself and Cllr Lora PeaceyWilcox have been working with a group of individuals who have significant experience and skill in finding solutions which are affordable and essential for the continued operation and replacement of the floating bridge between our two communities of East and West Cowes. I can conclude nothing other than that floating bridge six has to be replaced. You simply don’t keep throwing good money after bad and long ago I and the East Cowes stakeholder group came to the conclusion that the floating bridge would never be able to perform to the specifications for which it was built. I’m delighted to say that Cllr’s Dave Stewart and Ian Ward have agreed to meet with the I’m still in the process of writing a response engineers to listen to their suggestions and thoughts in moving forward into the future. to all of the highway parking proposals which were sent to us from the Isle of Wight We have all been crunching the numbers about what the floating bridge has cost Council PFI contracts team. We meet most days around high water time if possible at the slipway just opposite the shoreside Cafe. We spend about 20 minutes swimming together as a group which is steadily growing in numbers. It’s a wonderful way of being able to keep our social distance in the water and take some wonderful exercise. Of course if you’re going to come and join us it’s entirely at your own risk and we do look after one another however please don’t ever enter the water when it’s windy and blowing and the water crashing in from the sea and especially if there are not others present.

News Report from Town & County Cllr Karl Love - East Cowes. Email: karl.love@iow.gov.uk Facebook: Cllr Karl Love the future. I hope that I will be able to write in the next edition what the proposals have been and share them transparently with you. I have written to Isle of Wight Council about the offloading of Red Funnel traffic being diverted through an old exit originally used as an entrance to the former Redux Buildings in Castle Street. My opinion is this is not suitable for this purpose as it is dangerous to pedestrians and oncoming vehicles along Castle Street. This exit was never designed to cater for the volume of traffic which it now sees when the ferry arrives in the port. It was also not discussed or present within the planning application Red Funnel made to the Isle of Wight Council. The planning department of IWC says in response, that because this exit previously existed, Red Funnel can use it. Isle of Wight Council say that they have written to Red Funnel asking them to move the fence backwards in order to create a better line of sight. There is no news about Crossways Fields development. I have had news regarding the Kingston Road connection with Saunders way. Basically, we are still waiting for the developer to agree with Island Roads. You will probably all be aware of the East Cowes oil depot distribution at Kingston has closed. It’s Good to Have Them Back… It’s great to see the re-opening of The Friends of St Mary’s Hospital Shop. This wonderful community venture touches the lives of many. All the money they raise through the dedicated work of their volunteers is ploughed back into the hospital, buying vital equipment for patients and professionals. It’s been a tough year so far for the Friends, not just with Covid-19 but at the beginning of the year they were relocated from their prime position and had to basically start again. They may have been dealt a blow, but they have bounced back with even more determination. Their new shop is just past reception on the ground floor and not far from the main entrance to the Hospital. Over the years they have raised over £1.5 million and they want to keep building on this and desperately need your help. Please support them by using the shop at the hospital which is stocked full of goodies to tempt you - gifts, cards, news and snacks. They have not been able to re-open their cafes in outpatients, the Ryde Wellbeing Clinic and the Laidlaw Centre as Covid-19 has made this impossible for now. Their ward trolley service which also brought a smile to patients faces has also ceased operating and this has impacted hard on everyone. The staff and volunteers always remain positive and they hope that some time in the future they will be serving you tea and coffee again. They look forward to welcoming you into the shop and please support where you can. You can also donate via the many collection boxes across the island. They have supported St Mary’s staff and patients for 32 years now and with your help they can keep on doing that for another 32!

Local business Four Seasons Cooking Academy is owned by nutritionist and food safety specialist Michele Newton and she has some wise words for us all… “The colder months are approaching and now is the time to get your immune system fired up to help you beat any seasonal viruses that will be lurking around and to give you a fighting chance to keep yourself healthy and ready to fight whatever is thrown at you” Michele has kindly put together a few immune boosting foods and health tips to get us going. You can find more information on the Four Seasons Cookery Academy Facebook page. Tip 1. Jumbo oats topped with berries and a small drizzling of local Honey will keep blood sugars stable for hours. Tip 2. Please, please take a supplement from now until March at least. Even more important now. Go for a top strength tablet or spray. Many of us are low in Vitamin D, even with the lovely weather we’ve enjoyed. Tip 3. At the first sign of a cold/sore throat, make our tried & tested ‘potion’. 1/2 tsp Turmeric mixed into a paste with half a squeezed lemon and a drizzle of (preferably local) honey. Add enough hot water to make a ‘shot’ and down the hatch! Take 3 shots per day. Tip 4. Sweet potatoes contain your full daily need of vitamin A and a third of your vitamin C requirement. Delicious baked, they will also keep your blood sugars stable. Tip 5. Garlic not only strengthens the immune system, but also has antibacterial properties. Tip 6. Vitamin C is essential for a strong immune system. Our body doesn’t store or produce it so include a variety of vitamin C foods daily. Tip 7. Green tea - rich in antioxidants that can slow or prevent damage to our cells. Try to have 2 cups a day. Tip 8. Dark Chocolate (+70%) is superb for our immune system. It contains iron, magnesium, manganese, potassium, zinc and selenium - alongside being a powerful antioxidant. Tip 9. Kiwi fruit has a packed list of nutrients. Exciting studies are starting to show that 5 per week can reduce asthma induced wheezing. Wow! Tip 10. WELLBEING...... we have all been sorely ‘tested’ this year and this lowers our immune systems for sure. Talk to family/ friends about how you’re feeling; exercise and try to take each day as it comes. 12

She allowed me to see that my passions were elsewhere and opened my mind to the possibilities ahead of me. I changed my path and have never looked back. Maggie was totally right.” There is no such thing as a FREE seminar. There are many ‘coaches’ out there who will try and sell you their latest programme which is allegedly for your benefit. A lot of these people are actors and accomplished sales people. Rest assured Maggie is none of those things.
