Feathered Friends As autumn approaches it’s important that we give our feathered friends as much help as we can. Many birds fly from the UK to warmer climates (some as far as South Africa), but this can be a two-way system with birds arriving here from colder countries for the winter. To enjoy their presence in the garden, it’s important to care for them during the autumn and winter months ahead.

At this time of year, put out food and water on a regular basis. In severe weather, feed twice daily if you can, in the morning and in the early afternoon. Birds require high-energy (high fat) foods during the cold winter weather to maintain their fat reserves to survive upcoming frosty nights. Call Kevin on 07545 560946 Always adjust the quantity given to the (leave a message and he will call you back) demand and try not to allow uneaten food to accumulate around the feeders. Once you establish a feeding routine, try not to change it as the birds will become used to it and time their visits to your garden accordingly.
All makes & models wanted
Even as the weather cools, birds need to drink and bathe to stay hydrated and maintain their feathers. Just replenish the water daily especially in freezing weather or add a water drinker that hangs at the feeding station. Position your water source in a safe, open spot. This way predators can’t prey on the birds while the birds’ attention is diverted. Birds often roost in trees and hedges to give them protection from predators. They also use empty nest boxes and roosting pouches to insulate themselves from the cold and provide shelter from the rain. Make sure your garden has plenty of dense hedges, shrubs and trees where your feathered friends can stop over for the night well protected. Walls, trellis and even trees covered in ivy and climbers give good leafy cover for some species. Some birds will share their body heat and shelter overnight in small flocks inside a roosting box. Wrens are known to pile in on top of each other to endure cold winter nights. 2
A
utumn is approaching and the island is a beautiful place to be during this season. The changes in nature will be visible around every corner and there are so many wonderful walks to enjoy. You really can’t beat island life!
The island has been very busy this year with visitors from the mainland, some are regulars, but many have ventured here for the first time, and I am constantly hearing how lucky we are to live here, to have this on our doorsteps every day... but it does make me wonder if having it here right under our noses we forget the beauty and just take it for granted. I am now going to go about my business with my eyes slightly wider open to take in all the beauty that is right here in front of me. In this issue you will find local news and information for your area, mixed with advertising, features, editorials and of course our puzzle pages which I know many of you are a big fan of. As always thank you for picking up a copy and I’d love to hear your thoughts on anything featured in this month’s issue and please do get in touch with me if you have any news to share or are organising an event. I hope you have a safe and happy month and I look forward to catching up with you again soon.

Being silly by Maggie Currie As children we have an instinctual grasp of humour and appreciate all that is silly as a matter of course. Even the smallest absurdities provoke joyous gales of giggles or laughter. As we get older, this innate ability to see the value of silliness can diminish. Work takes precedence over play, and we seem to have less incentive to exercise our imaginative minds by focusing on what is funny. When we remember childhood, we may recall the pleasures of dressing up in funny costumes, reciting nonsense poems, making up strange games, or playing pretend. This unabashed silliness nourished our vitality and creativity. We can take in this nourishment once again by giving ourselves permission to lighten up and be silly. Too often we believe it serves no purpose to encourage our inherent silliness that is an inborn aspect of self. We may believe it is at odds with the grown-up culture of maturity. We play yet we don’t lose ourselves in play, and our imaginations are never truly given free reign because we regard the products of irrational creativity as being valueless. Yet silliness itself constitutes a vital part of human existence on many levels. Our first taste of ethereal bliss is often a consequence of our willingness to dabble in what we deem outrageous, nonsensical, or absurd. We delight in ridiculousness not only because laughter is intrinsically pleasurable, but also because it serves as a reminder that existence itself is fun. Skipping, doodling, and singing funny songs are no less entertaining than they were when we were children. We need not lose all interest in these cheerful and amusing activities, but to make them a part of our lives we must be ready to sacrifice a little dignity and a lot of fear. Silliness should be regarded as a priority because so much of life is inescapably serious. Through the magic of imagination, you can be or become anything–a photographer, a professional athlete, a dancer, a pilot. Whether you take hundreds of silly pictures, revel in the adulation of your fans as you make the winning catch, boogie down rock-star style in front of your bedroom mirror, or turn your desk into a cockpit, the ensuing hilarity will help you see that light-hearted fun and adulthood are not at all incompatible. If this has resonated with you in any way, please get in touch. I offer coaching and mentoring to you – for you to make the changes you want to in your life. Build your confidence in your abilities. To help you to have more fun, more freedom and less stress. That is it. There is no catch. I believe in you. Get in touch today to book your coaching sessions.

News Report from Town & County Cllr Karl Love - East Cowes. Email: karl.love@iow.gov.uk Facebook: Cllr Karl Love Well as usual it’s been another busy month for our town and me. The Floating Bridge has been acting up in its usual unreliable way and been off for a considerable period of time costing hundreds of thousands of taxpayers money. We were told last Autumn 2020 that legal action and mediation had commenced but in reality, and as I write this report no mediation meetings have taken place. The Floating Bridge has been far from a “Good Reliable Service” and our community was misled by responses to our questions. We were sidestepped in those responses and our questions were not answered. We were led to believe that we were in active mediation with third parties when in reality we were not! Perhaps a few letters had been sent but no action taken. This is what is now slowing our administration down in resolving the situation. This is what is going to happen, and I am very confident that it will take place. We will resolve the matter, make decisions and act to sort out the Floating Bridge failures and problems once and for all. Once having made the decision it will take time to implement but we will be able to see a way forwards. We have to be careful in the words which we currently use because of the legal issues but we would have been much further down the road if the last administration had taken a more dynamic approach from the outset. There were reports in the press that if a replacement vessel was commissioned it would take up to 6 years. This is not accurate. We believe it would take three years from start to finish. I will keep you informed about how things are progressing. There are still great concerns about Covid 19. There may be some winter restrictions introduced to help save lives and protect our community. As the Islands responsible
Cabinet member with overall responsibility for our Covid strategy I have been constantly reviewing the situation. Cllr Michael Paler has also been very involved with Covid co-ordination not just for East Cowes but for our entire Island. He has been working at the Covid vaccination centre in Newport and I wanted to thank him for his commitment. The situation and information changes incredibly quickly. I have expressed concerns about many things including our hospital situation, ferry crowding and testing. I have been assured that everything which can be done to help protect island people is being done. Our government is warning of winter Covid increases and flu outbreaks. Please get your Winter Flu jab if you are advised to do so. I have had my jab already. HM Queen Elizabeth Jubilee 2022. Preparations are starting now with our town’s contributions to the Jubilee and I’m looking forward to it. A Town Jubilee Garden is being planned and co-ordinated by Cllr Webster, David Hill and Myself for East Cowes and a Canopy of Green Tree’s as is indicated by HM Queen Elizabeth and led by Cllr Michael Paler in Jubilee recreation Ground York Ave. Trees will be planted in other locations as well. The living Jubilee Garden is hoped to be located at the junction of Well Road and York Ave improving the outlook and environment in the area. More news will follow about this in due course. Our Prime Minister announced additional funding for Adult Social Care in September. I put forward a motion for the Isle of Wight Council to write to Boris Johnson raising continued over the page
News Report from Cllr Karl Love continued our concerns about the pressures our Island is experiencing in the care sector. The announcement was so very welcomed but soon turned to bitter disappointment as we realised in fact our Island would receive little or nothing for government funds to support us in our immediate situation. We are critically short of paid and trained carers. The situation improved slightly at the end of the summer holidays, but the fact remains difficult. Carers are very important and valued on our island and caring for people is a very rewarding career. There are lots of care jobs out there waiting to be filled so if you’re looking for a career change then why not give it a go. I will continue to press the government for a better Island deal and think our island cares for all their dedication during the Covid emergency. Work has started on the Town Hall hub, and it seems to be progressing well. A great deal of effort has gone into planning this and I am very grateful to the Staff at the town hall for all their efforts. We hope it will be a great success and we look forward to seeing the completed works. The Esplanade project will take place and people have been asking what the hold-up is. We have to complete all the red tape of the council and follow the health and safety rules. Cllr Sharon Lake is doing a great job and we will get work started as soon as we can. We are all frustrated by the delays, but Sharon and others are on the case. The Business Association and some of us councillors are trying to start a town market and discussions have started in this matter. We are still waiting for the conclusions and outcomes of the Road Traffic consultation which took place over the summer and the outcome of it is expected soon.
Next year is the 80th Anniversary of the East Cowes Blitz known as the Blyskawica. The Blyskawica associations are starting to plan some local events in memory of the anniversary. We are hoping for a delegation and possible visit again of a Polish naval ship. We must not also forget the contributions of the Free French Navy and our Island people. It’s also 50 years since Uther Fox passed away who lived in East Cowes, he was a choir boy at St James church and a Sea Scout. Uther Fox was famous for creating Airborne Lifeboats dropped from aircrafts during the second world war saving many airmen’s lives. He sailed with HRH Prince Philip and even lived on board one of the previous Floating Bridges using it as a workshop. There are events being planned to make this occasion. East Cowes has a very rich history of innovation and culture. Our East Cowes Island Roads District Steward Karysha Clarke works as the eyes and ears for the town in walking the streets looking for defects to ensure that everything is as it should be. If there are any concerns about highways, hedges and defects etc you should always contact Island roads to report them to info@islandroads.com. I am constantly reporting issues which I feel are of concern. Our steward Karysha also looks after Cowes, Northwood, Osborne and Whippingham areas. I and the town council receive quarterly District Updates providing us with advance notice of Island Roads Highways Improvement Programme. Finally, I wish you all an enjoyable autumn as the nights draw in and we have lots to look forward to in our future.

It’s Goatober The Isle of Wight’s very first Goatober launched in 2019, in an effort to raise awareness of goat meat, milk, cheese and fudge produced on the Island. Kingston Smallholding Goat Farm, Green Barn Dairy Goat Farm, plus several butchers, meat wholesalers and shops encouraged islanders and a wide range of catering outlets to add goat products to their menus throughout the month of October.

Goat is the most commonly eaten red meat in the world, as many cultures do not eat beef or pork. Goat meat makes up around 60% of the red meat produced worldwide and yet in countries such as the UK – where the wool and lamb trade has dominated – it has always been one of the much lesser consumed meats. However, because of increasing ethnic diversity it is starting to become far more readily available. Nestling between Shorwell and Chale Green, is Kingston Smallholding Goat Farm, owned by Simone and David. They started off with a small herd of Golden Guernsey dairy goats and Pygmy goats, and then bought some Boer meat goats. Goat meat has been available on the Island for a number of years, but commercial production has not been regularly maintained. After obtaining EHO approval a few years ago, with the help of a number of Island butchers, they tempted a few select pubs and restaurants with their goat meat, which have been added to their menu or to their specials boards. All reported great interest from diners and despite covid interruptions - consumption rates on the Island continue to rise quite rapidly. Islanders are being encouraged to try adding goat meat to their menus. ‘The Beast’ Last month’s front cover of the tractor received lots of compliments and my inside story about my love of tractors caught the attention of one local resident, Geoff Horsnell, who contacted me to tell me about his ‘pride and joy’ and invited me over to meet the old girl! Geoff is the proud owner of a Fordson Super Major and brought her in 2017 from a farm in Steeple Ashton, where she had sat for many years unused but thankfully covered over. She is still in her natural colours, as she would have been when she came off the factory line (Empire Blue for everything but the wheels which are Fordson Orange), obviously she has one or two marks on her but what 60-year-old hasn’t? Her engine purrs and she is in great shape. Geoff does the odd favour for his neighbour by topping one of her fields ensuring she keeps in good working order. This tractor is affectionately called ‘The Beast’ and this name came about after her recent cameo role in a drama that was filmed on the Island. She was spotted by a location scout who happened to see her sitting on the driveway and after photos were sent to the Director, she was offered a scene in the drama ‘The Beast Must Die’. On the day of filming, her scene took place on the road leading down from The Needles New Battery and involved her having a very near miss with an Aston Martin being driven by the leading lady. Meeting ‘The Beast’ really made my day and having a ride on her made my year!
