Dear Readers Welcome to the September issue of Island Magazines. I hope you all had a lovely August and have been taking advantage of the lovely weather we have had. The Island has been soaking up the sunshine and lets hope that it continues well into September and we get to experience an Indian summer. The summer holidays are very nearly over and the children will be back to school very shortly. The holidays makers will soon be returning home and lets hope the roads won’t be quite as congested once they have gone. The biggest event in September may be the Bestival but there are still other events happening across the Island and you can find more details on the ‘Dates for your Diary’ on pages 12 and 13. This months issue is once again packed with news, events, advertisers and feature editorials. Please keep using the services of the advertisers and remember to let them know where you saw their advert. I hope you all have a wonderful September and I look forward to catching up with you next month. Debbie

Town Mayor Report for East Cowes From Margaret Webster
(Tel No: 01983 299082 and leave a message for the Mayor) As you read the magazine this month we will be moving into September, another summer holiday over, Schools returning for a new school year, children moving on to the next adventure in their young lives. Good luck to them all, particularly those starting their exam years. I do hope you have all had an enjoyable time this summer and that you have all enjoyed our short summer weather, we have been lucky some days!! Whilst August is a busy month for some areas, East Cowes enjoyed the festivities around the Cowes Week Festivities. During this week I also welcomed Queen Victoria! And her visiting associates to the Town Hall, she and her visitors were then escorted around the Town visiting various historical areas within the Town. I am sure many of you will have met her during her visit. This was organised to coincide with the Victorian Strollers Ball held in the Town Hall on the Tuesday evening of Cowes Week. A very colourful event with Victorian ball gowns worn by most of the participants. On the Sunday of Cowes Week, The Amy White Theatre group held a Victorian Musical Hall evening, once again it was very enjoyable. The performers taking part were superb. I would like to thank them for kindly giving their time freely and helping to make a very enjoyable evening successful. Many thanks to our master of ceremonies Cllr Bob Hooper, he is once again a star. All proceeds collected will help to improve the Theatre within the Town Hall. During this month there was a Planning Meeting called to discuss the proposed Marina development, the committee looked at the plans for the marina development in great deal, have made their observations and 6
comments that were submitted to the IOW Planning department in time for the closure date. The comments and recommendations will be published on the planning website as well as the Town Councils website for you to view. At the July Town Council meeting the Councillors discussed varying issues and made several resolutions relating to the Town management and other issues. However as we did not hold a Town Council Meeting during August (agreed at the July meeting) the minutes have not been ratified, I will report to you any issues relating to these minutes after our September meeting, they will be published on the Town Council website. As advertised in the County press and locally the Town Council has a vacancy on the Town Council. In all probability there will be an election taking place in the East Cowes North Ward if 10 residents request it, I am sure that there will be sufficient requests and that an election will take place. This is managed through County hall and will probably be published shortly through County Hall. Date and venues for the polling will be advertised, but firstly however qualifying candidates will be invited to apply. We look forward to welcoming a new member to our team. East Cowes Town Council Meetings now start at 6.30pm on the 3rd Thursday of each month. Planning meeting commences at 6pm (if the Town Council are in receipt of any applications)

John Lea of Wootton has had his exciting children’s adventure story published by A H Stockwell Ltd of Ilfracombe, on 19th August. John Lea served in the RAF before teacher training at the Institute of Education of London University. He taught English for forty years in various schools before becoming headmaster of Ryde Junior School and then headmaster of Downside Preparatory School in Surrey for fifteen years.
John has served organist at www.islanddentalservices.com as Ryde Parish 34 Castle Street, East Cowes Church for over twenty years and was chairman of the Isle of Wight Festival of Music, Drama and Dance for thirteen years. In retirement on the Isle of Wight, John has found the time to write his first book, The Vackie Heroes, based loosely on his time as an evacuee in 1941–2 in Ilfracombe, a place which holds many happy memories for him even of those dark days. The story is based on the author’s memories but the events are complete fiction. The book is available in hardback, price £8.95, at Ryde Bookshop or can be ordered from other bookshops and is also available online or direct from the publisher. 8

Councillor Luisa Hillard – County Councillor for East Cowes. Phone/ text: 07964 869341 or email luisa.hillard@iow.gov.uk Many parents will be breathing a sigh of relief as our children head back to school shortly after the long summer holidays. This year my children tried the Council’s Activ8 summer activity programme at the Medina Leisure Centre and I can recommend it as being good value for money. Childcare is something that myself and Cllr Julia Baker-Smith have been trying to increase access to for some time. We believe that that there are not enough nursery or pre-school places for local children. If you are on a waiting list please complain to the Council to help highlight the problem. For example, I was told in July that my baby is unlikely to get any care until Christmas. As you know this is a huge issue for working parents. The solution is extra classroom space (and more employment) so that more children can be cared for and the Council has a duty to provide this. As a family we were also pleased to support the Cowes Cardboard Boat Race, organised by Tony Downs from East Cowes. My kids built and raced a green, dragon boat that came third overall. Last month I wrote about my expectations for the Red Funnel development, following many hours of stakeholder meetings. Sadly my hopes for a new plan, reflecting community need, have not materialised, which has left me feeling very disappointed and despondent. Essentially it would seem that Red Funnel have decided to appeal the decision refusing their original planning application after all, on the assumption that Kingston Marine Park can provide an alternative location for local industry. 10
I am mindful that it was the Polish sailors on the warship Blyskawica(which was built in the Medina and was back for a refit) who defended East Cowes during a bombing raid in the Second World War. Next year marks the 70th anniversary of this event with activities likely in both East and WestCowes. Incidents of fly tipping are being investigated by the Council following an issue with 20 black bags on Castle Street, four of which were allegedly dumped by a man in a silver truck. Some of the others are believed to be legitimate due to residents not having received their black bins or gull proof sacks. Amey are therefore making it a ‘priority’ to deliver these as soon as possible. If anyone else is still waiting please let me know and I shall try to chase this up but I’m having difficulty getting responses too! My next drop-in sessions will be on Thursday 1st September and 6th October, 9.15am -10.15am. Until next month, King regards, Luisa

East Cowes Business Association Wow, what a busy month in the town! By the time you read this, there will be four major planning applications being considered by the IW Council; all will have a major impact to East Cowes (including one on ‘the other side’ of the river at Medina Yard). The applications have already generated a great deal of discussion both in town and on social media, and as always, you’re encouraged to look at the applications for yourself and let the IW Council know your views – good or bad. Proposing a mix of housing, shops, cafes and marshalling yard, the applications are varied. We aim to respond to the IW Council and encourage you do too.
