Welcome to the September issue of Island Magazines. I can’t believe we are here already as it only feels like a couple of weeks ago that summer started. We have some beautiful landscapes on the Island and there’s nothing better than a field of hay bales, wheat or sweetcorn. Just travel less than five minutes from any town centre and you will be in the midst of the countryside with fields of all varying colours and crops. No doubt like me you have noticed the tractors, trailers and balers out in force going backwards and forwards at all hours of the day while they frantically work to harvest the crops. I’ve always had a keen liking for tractors so I don’t mind coming across them on the roads. I always add extra time to my journey at this time of the year and rather than stress I can relax and enjoy the views over some of the most picturesque landscapes in the country. This month we are giving a BIG shout out on behalf of Feline Welfare and some of their residents who are looking for their forever homes. Read more about them on page 14. I hope you all have a great September and enjoy the last few weeks of summer...

East Cowes Town Council - Clerks Report As usual there is a lot going on in East Cowes. More than 60 members of the public attended the Full Council meeting in July when the Isle of Wight Council Area Regeneration Programme managers attended to share information on the consultation about East Cowes Esplanade. Concerns were raised by the public about the failure to deal with the landslip and local people were keen to see the Victorian character of the Esplanade preserved. Bob Seely, MP also attended the meeting to talk about housing development on the Island and the Government allocation of 9000 houses to be built on the Island over the next 15 years. He felt that this is too high and does not take account of the islands infrastructure, landscape and character. In addition, the proposed Crossways development, due to be lodged with planning around September/October, has plans for 154 houses. This was of particular concern to the people of East Cowes and Town Councillors for East Cowes and Whippingham are working together to seek the views of residents on this proposal. Please look out for a questionnaire in the near future where you will be able to express your views. It will also be on the East Cowes Town Council website. A public meeting will also be organised when the planning application has been lodged. Following the success of the events that took place during the Whitsun bank holiday weekend and looking at potential for Arts and Culture Events in the town, the Town Council will be working in conjunction with the East Cowes Community Partnership to bring new art projects forward. During August the main hall of the Town Hall was redecorated, the floor repaired, and 4
refurbished, and new curtains have been added. Anyone hiring the hall will now find it a bright airy space that makes the perfect venue for classes, groups, parties and meetings of all sorts. Thank you to all the regular hirers for their understanding about the hall being closed to allow this work to go ahead. In September it would be wonderful to see the community supporting two litter picks that will be helping to keep the town tidy. The first is being organised by the Town Council with the assistance of a grant from the Isle of Wight Council. Meet at the Parkside Pavilion, Vectis Road on Saturday 21st September 10am - 12noon. All equipment provided. Light refreshments will be available. On Sunday 22nd September 10am there will be a Community Beach Clean on East Cowes Esplanade. This is being run by FAECES (Fight Against Environmental Contamination of Estuaries & Seafronts) in conjunction with Surfers Against Sewage and everyone is invited to participate. Meet at the Esplanade Car Park. Bring wellies, work gloves and pickers if you have them. Supervised children and dogs very welcome. For any members of the public wishing to attend the Town Council meetings during September they are as follows: Facilities, Projects and Events Committee on Thursday 5th, 7.00pm at the Town Hall; Full Council Meeting on Thursday 19th September 7.00pm at Queensgate Primary School. Agendas are displayed on the noticeboards outside the Town Hall and at the Bumblebee Playground as well as on the Council’s website.
West Wight Pet Lifeline West Wight Pet Lifeline, based in Freshwater, not only provides an emergency service for lost, stray or unattended pets in distress across the West Wight area, they also offer an island wide response service for certain types of wildlife casualties, these being the larger or more dangerous species that the public would not be expected to handle, such as foxes, badgers and swans. Recent calls that the group have been involved with include the trapping, neutering and return/rehoming of a colony of stray cats around Golden Hill Fort, with four adults and six kittens all having been taken into care over the last few weeks. They have also been involved with searching for lost dogs, scanning found dogs for microchips and reuniting them with their owners and attending seriously sick and injured stray cats in need of immediate veterinary care.

News Report from Town & County Cllr Karl Love - East Cowes. Email: karl.love@iow.gov.uk Facebook: Cllr Karl Love Cowes week has come and gone and I hope you all enjoyed some part of it? One of my personal highlights was sitting on the beach at Egypt Point watching the exciting dramatic racing of the Sail GP events. It was a great turn out by local and Island people. It was also great to see local young people racing their dinghy’s and homing their competitive skills just off our East Cowes Esplanade which is rapidly becoming a place of choice to enjoy the water and Victorian Esplanade. It’s been a busy month for me keeping tabs on all that’s going on in and around the town community. We have had problems with Red Funnel’s marshalling of traffic which is disappointing given all the extra space they now have. A member of the public ended up marshalling traffic on one occasion when the Phoenix Yard was almost empty and cars were crowding our town and York Avenue. Red Funnel have more space but have not changed how they manage the yards marshalling. It’s just not fair to our community to be blocked from accessing our own town community and using it as we the residents desire. Discussions are ongoing. I also met with Island Roads and Red Funnel separately to discuss their proposed town highways road plan layout. I don’t see the necessity to change the entire road network traffic flow when all that’s needed is tweaking at minimal cost. The housing development policy madness of Isle of Wight Council and the big East Cowes Land grab continues. I have been doing some research of my own and bring together the information to help inform readers of the real total of houses intended for East Cowes and Whippingham. 12
The real total is 594+ new household dwellings are yet to be built and are currently in planning or development discussion for our community. Alongside this are 4 proposed hotels with another in Newport all on the East Medina Bank! The numbers are:• 100 houses with outline planning permissions granted at the Folly development in Whippingham, plus a hotel! • 154 houses planned on the Crossways agricultural site (not yet submitted for planning) • 60+ houses/flats in a retirement village plus 57 high value Dwellings on Spring Hill and Norris Castle Estates plus a hotel with 101 units (Outline plans unveiled but not yet presented). • 40 more dwellings at Hawthorne Meadows (outline planning agreed). • 40 more dwellings with outline planning agreed on the Phoenix Yard and yet another Hotel at Trinity Yard. • An estimated 123 houses and apartments at Victoria Quay/Maresfield Road plus another Hotel (planning consent agreed ) • Estimated between 5 to 30 new dwellings at Millfield Avenue, East Cowes. (Not qualifiable at this time but developers are working proposals). All this comes on top of what is currently under construction. Our community has already had hundreds of new homes built and they continue to be built around our town So here are some of the statistics that accompany the buildings:Fact - EC currently has a population of 7,010 • Another 1,188 new adult residents will be added by these planning proposals which equals a 14% population increase plus 50% of
News Report from Cllr Karl Love continued new residents with 2.2 children or dependents and this could add possibly another 594 individuals. No new schools or doctors are being planned. • 1,000+ Additional residents cars plus hotel traffic. All this to use a single busy arterial road • Estimated hotel occupancy x 4 hotels could result in 281 rooms (3 x 60 room +101). An estimated 300 new hotel jobs of mixed contracts but of courses we will be told it’s much greater than this but of courses other small hotels may close as a result. • Carbon emissions up by an estimated 30%. This has impacts for migrating birds, wildlife and green open spaces etc. This huge expansion does not fit with an Island World Biosphere designation or IWC climate emergency declaration. IWC EAST COWES REGENERATION PLAN IN CHAOS - Wight Shipyard are an international island success story, building world class boats and providing important island jobs. However, I was slightly taken aback by the scale of their new but necessary structure being built on our seafront and the impact it has on the whole river seascape. The iconic Union Flag is now hidden from sight. We must insist it’s only temporary? However it is necessary and being built because of our island councils complete lack of progress in securing the promised facilities to enable them to remain operational. Kingston Marine Park was promised to be the all singing, all dancing future home for our boat builders by this administration and MP Bob Seely. However at an estimated development cost of £5.5 million built by Homes England which Isle of Wight Council paid £700,000 to obtain last year. Kingston Marine Park still remains empty and is set to become nothing more than an abandoned
concrete slab. I was informed by the Leader, Cllr Stuart that it will not now be used for shipbuilding as promised and they has other plans for it! However it’s such a secret that he did not elaborate on what might become of it! This administrations plans are being made behind closed doors and in secret. Aluminium Marine Construction (ACM) was also forced to vacate the now demolished adjoining Columbine Buildings and had little choice but to relocate to West Cowes where it now resides in dilapidated and crumbing, not fit for purpose buildings. The Medina Yard Plan due for redevelopment, also appears to be crumbling with no sign of progression and now being placed back on the market for sale! Again this leaves our local Marine industry in turmoil. I would recommend IWC purchase a part of the Medina Yard to build new Marine construction units and rent them out to enable and resource our existing Marine industries and in doing so safeguarding jobs. This administration say that they are truly blue sky thinkers but the storm clouds have gathered and we need urgent action before all is washed away. Very little of their Island or corporate plan has or will be delivered I would consolidate on what is already being planned or promised and deliver on at least some of these regeneration commitments before investing yet more time, energy and funding into fantasy projects designed to look progressive but empty in substance. Finally I welcome to East Cowes Hidden Beauty Cosmetic Tattoo Studio to our town in Lower York Avenue and wish them good luck. Please enjoy the rest of the summer. 13
Feline Welfare Isle of Wight

Feline Welfare have lots of adorable guests staying with them and all these gorgeous cats are looking for love and a place to call home. They range from 12 weeks up to 13 years of age and they all deserve safe, genuine homes with people who REALLY care. Some have had a sad start to their lives so will need time, patience and understanding, but even those who are timid initially learn to trust you and will be WONDERFUL pets. Here are just a few of the really special ones that want you to pick up the phone and call so you can come and meet them. Call anytime on 521778 For more in-depth information about each cat you can visit their website www.felinewelfareiow.co.uk. If you are unable to adopt or foster but would still like to help please consider making a donation to them in order that they can keep doing the good work that they do. You will find all the info on the website. Sylvester has had a tough start to his little life, but he is surprisingly confident all things considered. He is used to being with a large group of cats so would like to go to a home with one or two friendly felines. He will be timid initially but with love, patience and time he will become your friend for life. Vinnie is a mainly white boy and is 13 years young. He is a loving boy and needs a caring home in a safe area. He has always been a single pet and would like to keep it this way as he wants his own personal 'human slave’. He is very affectionate and just LOVES human company. He recently had surgery to remove part of his ear flap. He has recovered well and is raring to go !!!! Rupert (tabby/white) is 6 years old and he is very affectionate. He does get on with other cats but he may well take over his humans lock, stock and barrel, so more than one lap is essential!!! Rupert is such a contented boy and wants a home to call his own. Meet Lloyd (black/white) and Harry (white/black). These gorgeous boys are 2 years old and they are looking for a loving home where they can stay together. They are neutered and vaccinated and really are ready to start their new life in a safe and loving home. They are REALLY affectionate boys and will make gorgeous pets for their new ‘parents’ or should we say ‘human slaves’ !!!! 14
Garfield is looking for a loving, safe new home with someone who really cares. He is 9 years young and he needs a home as an only pet. He has recently had a tough time but he is still happy and content with life and has plenty of love to give.
