No Time for Dodgy Dealers Here… K. J’s Pre-owned Cars is a new business set up by two local people who are fed up with locals being scammed by ‘dodgy dealers’. It seems that more recently these rogue traders are taking more and more people for a ride.
K. J's Pre-owned Cars Local and ethical traders...
We BUY and we SELL but we don’t rip you off! Supporting new and young drivers to find safe, reliable cars without hefty profits. You won’t drive away from us with a dud deal. Are you looking for something specific or want to know what we have? Call Kev on 07545 560916 (leave a message and he will call you back) Follow us on
Let me introduce to you Kev, who is the ‘K’ in this new business. Kev has always had a love of cars from a very young age and he too has been caught out in the past and ended up with a raw deal. He understands We are supporting the economy and that money is tight for everyone and know the Community Spirited Cafe in East Cowes. that when you invest your hard-earned cash in a car you should be “An excellent team getting an honest deal offering an and not having the wool invaluable service” pulled over your eyes.
NEW! Book online www.mobilevetsurgery.co.uk Jane is the ‘J’ in the Stress-free Islandwide “Friendly & reliable new venture and knows professional yet Home Visits & her way around cars. very caring” Central Vet Surgery Born and bred in Birmingham she was the first girl to study auto engineering and then went on to run two Keyhole CT successful scrap yards Surgery Scans where she stripped cars and cleaned good parts 01983 212999 Watergate Rd, Newport, PO30 1XP to resell. When she moved to the Island in 1998 her first job was with a main dealership, which made sense as cars are in her blood. She took a few years off to start a family and now Jane and Kev are working together to ensure Islanders don’t get ripped off when buying cars. They are particularly passionate about first time buyers and young drivers. They understand that they do not have much money but it’s imperative that they have a road worthy car, they know that just because a car has a year’s MOT it doesn’t make it a safe purchase. They are buying and selling, good, reliable, safe cars that they are selling on to locals, but without the hefty profit that is so often associated with cars that are brought from mainland auctions and sold here on the island. If you are in the market for a new car call Kevin on 0754 556 0946 and let him know what you are after and he will do his best to match you to your perfect car. Don’t forget to see their main advert above.
Welcome to the September issue which marks a special day for Island Magazines. You can find out more on page 13. I don’t think anyone can say we haven’t had a summer - at the time of writing this we have just come out of a heatwave and I like many others are thankful for the drop in temperature. It was at such an unbearable level but like with many things this year we got through it!!! I always rave about the wonderful scenic views and the countryside on the island. Just a five-minute trip out of any town centre and you will be greeted by fields and countryside of varying shades from the recently sown to the just harvested. I like nothing more than watching the tractors and machinery working the land, there is something calming about watching them cut, dry, turn and bale hay. I know some people do not like being behind tractors and trailers on the road but I think they are a great sight to see and at the end of the day they are only doing their job like we all are. This month’s issue is packed with news and information. I am always happy to receive emails and phone calls from readers and if you have anything to share with others please feel free to get in touch. I hope you all enjoy reading this issue and thank you to all advertisers, contributors and readers for supporting Island Magazines. I look forward to catching up with you next month.

East Cowes Town Council - Clerks Report The Town Council continues to meet remotely by Zoom for the time being following the advice of the National Association of Local Councils. For anyone who would like to join a meeting during September there will be a Facilities, Projects and Events Committee at 11.00am on Thursday 3rd and a Full Council meeting at 6.00pm on Thursday 17th. The Agenda including joining instructions is published on the Town Council noticeboards, on the website and the Facebook page on the Friday before. At the time of writing there is a Town Council vacancy in Osborne Ward due to the resignation of Michael Paler at the end of July. The Town Council has thanked him for his contribution since becoming a town councillor in October 2018 and as Deputy Mayor since May 2019 and wishes him every success in the future. He continues to co-ordinate the very valuable work of the Community Support Hub for East Cowes and Whippingham. During August, the Town and Neighbourhood Plan questionnaires were delivered to every household in East Cowes. It is very important that as many residents as possible complete this to influence what happens in the town over the next 15 years. Completed paper questionnaires can be popped in the red post box to the right of the main entrance of the Town Hall. The survey is also available to complete online via the website using the link https://secure. journeysurveys.com/answer/1495/ prompt The Clerk and Assistant Clerk have returned to the office Monday to Friday 4
8am-1pm after working at home since March. If you need to call at the Town Hall please ring the doorbell and someone will come to speak to you. A few regular hirers are beginning to return with all the appropriate measures in place to conduct their activities safely. Some groups are unable to return yet. Any updates can be found on the website and Facebook. The Town Council’s Annual Governance and Accountability Return for 2019/20 has been completed and as required by law documents will be available for public inspection for 30 working days from 1st September. East Cowes Library launched a collection and drop off service on 17th August. This is operating from the Town Hall main entrance every Monday from 10am-1pm. Books, talking books and DVD orders can be placed by phone 01983 718662, email eastcoweslibrary@gmail.com or by post to the Town Hall, York Avenue, East Cowes, PO32 6RU. When visiting please follow the guidelines displayed to help us keep everyone safe. The Library will continue to operate from the Town Hall for the foreseeable future. After so many months of normal life being restricted it is encouraging to have some exciting news to share. It is expected that the Community Hub and Library building works will commence adjacent to the Town Hall before the end of the year. This will be a great asset to the Town and a wonderful resource for the community. Stay safe and well.
Putting the Needs of Children First Jigsaw Family Support is a community based; small charitable organisation on the Island. They are a child focused organisation but work with all family members and extended family to provide a safe, stable and happy living environment during and following the separation and divorce of parents and other life changing issues. Their services include supervised and supported contacts as well as handovers, DNA testing, mediation, family counselling, workshops and parent/child support groups. Their team is made up of committed professionals with years of experience and cover a wide range of services. They are recognised by the courts, social services and all national agencies and have enhanced NACCC accreditation and can provide a safe, caring, and relaxed environment where non-resident parents can spend time with their children on a regular basis. Many parents who use the services of Jigsaw Family Support have lost the ability to communicate with their partner and have trouble agreeing on what’s best for their children. The range of issues they can help with include relationship breakdown, child protection concerns, mental and physical health problems, drug and alcohol misuse, housing issues, debt, poverty, court issues (now legal aid has stopped), contact issues and domestic violence. There is a small fee applied when using their services but Jigsaw Family Support understand that families on low income and those experiencing financial difficulties during this unusual time may find this an added stress and are therefore willing to accept donations. They understand the number one priority is the children and providing a safe community haven with professional help to guide the family through the difficult times is their main aim. For more information you can call Jigsaw Family Support on 01983 639793, email info@ jigsawfamilysupport. com or visit their website www. jigsawfamilysupport. com

120 years of Isle of Wight retailing comes to an end Beardsalls has been a household name on the Isle of Wight since 1901. Their first retail shop started on Shanklin Esplanade by John Beardsall. This family business has waxed and waned over the years, through 2 World Wars, storms, floods and numerous recessions. The retailer has always developed it’s offering to match the times, but now alas, with the advent of internet shopping and the near total collapse of high street business due to the Covid pandemic the time has come to shut its retail doors for ever. Four generations of the Beardsalls family have been custodians of the business. John’s son Bernard inherited the Esplanade shop upon his death and soon expanded into another unit in Regent Street, Shanklin, quickly becoming the Island’s very first ‘lending Library’. Bernard’s premature death meant that his widow and youngest son, Michael took over the reins and were soon joined by Mike’s wife Iris and his elder brother Peter. The shop expanded taking on new premises in Ventnor and developing the range of goods to include books, greeting cards and photocopy services. In 1999 Michael’s son Toby joined the team and further expanded into Ryde, Sandown and Newport. Toby Beardsall says “We have been on an exciting journey with Beardsalls. Some of our long standing loyal customers who dealt with my parents in the 60’s and 70’s have supported us through good times and bad, but now we must move on and develop a new business for the modern age” Beardsalls move into printing has enabled them to build on the heritage of the Beardsalls brand, maintaining the core belief of great customer service. Its Print Studio in Orchard Street, Newport opened in 2018 and will remain open and continue to develop services as Beardsalls has always done in the past. Printing is done on site and ranges from wrapping and signwriting vans to printing the magazine that you are reading now. Beardsalls retail may be gone, but the name should not be forgotten.

News Report from Town & County Cllr Karl Love - East Cowes. Email: karl.love@iow.gov.uk Facebook: Cllr Karl Love Work is to recommence on the Frank James Building and the planning application to build the additional houses has been withdrawn. I understand that the builder has been able to raise the funds to be able to continue renovation works. I have viewed the works for myself after receiving complaints from residents about the quality of the works that had been undertaken. There is certainly a great deal to be done yet in order to return this property to near what it was like when first built. A local resident of East Cowes and Whippingham has launched an online petition asking residents to sign a petition requesting an independent investigation of the floating bridge. Isle of Wight Council conducted its own internal enquiry several years ago, but this was not an independent enquiry. The time has come for us to take action and to demand a full independent enquiry and for a replacement Floating Bridge to be ordered. We have had so many promises and reassurances from the IWC about the continuing programme to improve and resolve all the problems of the floating bridge. Again, as I write this article the floating bridge is out of service with a hydraulic fault and has been for a month. After three years of continual problems and failures there can be no other resolution other than to replace it completely. Here is the link to the petition. https://www.change.org/p/iow-councilceo-independent-investigation-into-cowesto-east-cowes-chain-ferry ‘The Beast Must Die’ and I’m not talking about our floating bridge because our beast the floating bridge has already died. A period drama is to be filmed around our
island over the next months including at the former East Cowes Convent at Spring Hill. The Spring Hill Estate has stunning unspoilt views over the bay of East and West Cowes and the estate is full of a diverse mixture of wildlife containing rare and endangered species. I hope this film will demonstrate the importance of maintaining the natural beauty of the Spring Hill Estate where developers have proposed building a retirement and residential complex. This truly magnificent estate lies outside the existing area of outstanding natural beauty. The drama is a story written about our island in the 1930s and I’m sure you will all be looking forward to seeing it. Our town library is now back in operation to some extent. You can return books without being fined and you can order replacement books, but you are not able to browse the books inside the building itself. This service is available on Mondays from 10am to 1pm. I for one am deeply saddened that Michael Paler, former East Cowes Town Councillor, has chosen to step down from office. Michael has done a terrific job during this pandemic, coordinating our local community response hub and working to support the many volunteers. I deeply enjoyed Michael’s company who worked tirelessly for his community representing Hawthorn Meadows and the surrounding areas. Michael attended lots of other meetings and was organising East Cowes VE-Day celebration which sadly had to be cancelled due to Covid. Michael is continuing to coordinate the community hub and he’s working with the East Cowes Crafters on the winter and autumn displays.
News Report from Town & County Cllr Karl Love - East Cowes. Email: karl.love@iow.gov.uk Facebook: Cllr Karl Love East Cowes Crafters are working on a mosaic created out of wood panels to be displayed on the shuttering of Red Funnel. I have wood panels in various sizes and shapes which can be collected from the Spring Hill Convent entrance porch. There are lots of wonderful different designs being created out of shells and other creative art forms. I’m certainly looking forward to seeing them completed. Our government is currently consulting on their proposed White Paper for Planning. It is important that we all make comments wherever possible because this will affect East Cowes where so many developers would like to build housing and property. We have yet to see the completion of the work being undertaken by Red Funnel and I have asked for that work to be completed on the Columbine Building Restoration where the redux buildings were connected to it. This area looks unsightly and I have asked that it be completed as soon as possible. I am concerned that progress to complete the new terminal has come to a stop and I shall be raising this with both Isle of Wight Council and Red Funnel. Red Funnel are engaged in a dialogue with the East Cowes Town Council and the meeting is to be held in September. It’s been a great pleasure to see how our Esplanade and beach have been enjoyed over the summer. We are sorry that East Cowes Town Council was not able to open the paddling pool this summer due to the strict regulations imposed. We all want to enjoy a pleasant environment and we can all help to maintain our Esplanades beauty by removing any rubbish and those fishing from the promenade, I encourage to return any seaweed back into the water.

The September issue marks Island Magazines 10th Anniversary and never in my wildest dreams did I think back in 2010 that it would grow from just the one area to seven, covering pretty much the whole of the Island. The very first area was East Cowes & Whippingham and this was because at the time it was my hometown and had a real community feel. It was so well received amongst residents that I launched the Cowes, Gurnard & Northwood area in November 2011. 2012 was a very busy year and this was the year Island Magazines really stood out and a further three areas were added, Sandown & Shanklin launched in February, Ryde & Wootton in July and finally in October 2012 Freshwater, Totland and Yarmouth. These five areas kept me very busy for the next couple of years and then I started to receive requests from Newport residents asking if I was going to be producing a magazine for their area? How could I refuse... and Newport & Carisbrooke was launched in April 2014. Fast forward 4 years until September 2018 and the Bembridge & St Helens area was launched. There is real community spirit in these two villages and as this is what the magazine is all about it, it was only natural that this area would become the seventh area to be added to the family. I am lucky that I can say I love my job; I love what the magazine has become and how it has taken shape. When I sit down and think about the people involved each month it’s quite astonishing... Firstly, you have myself, all the wonderful advertisers, news contributors which are made up of Councillors and Parish/Town Councils, some of them I have been working with since the start, then the team of printers who print and pack it every month and then all the wonderful distributors who kindly allow me to fly in and out of their premises every month (now wearing a mask) and deliver a pile to them which they kindly display ready for the thousands of readers who come Portable Appliance Testing and pick up a copy to take home and (PAT Testing) read. Without them all playing their part there really wouldn’t be a local community • Domestic & Commercial magazine and we all work together like • Competitive Rates • All Island Coverage well-oiled cogs. I hope everyone is looking forward to the next 10 years of Island Magazines, as I know I am!

Be prepared! Has the coronavirus pandemic given you time to reflect on your affairs? You may be familiar with the Scout Association’s famous motto, and it certainly is relevant for this area of the law. In these uncertain times, you should plan ahead in case of sudden illness and the possibility that you may be unable to have the family meetings that you thought you’d have to explain it all. It may be that you have a Will in place, but your circumstances have changed and do not reflect your current wishes. It’s easy to put off because we don’t want to think about it, but if you own a home or a small bank account or a pension, or insurance — these are all things you might want to mention in your Will. You don’t have to be wealthy to need to plan your estate. It can be more than considering property or assets, such as considering who would legally care for any children, and to be able to direct or influence who will take over responsibilities for them. This becomes more of a priority in nontraditional family structures, for instance if you raised a child from another marriage, or you have a long-term partner, but you have never married.

These wonderful flowers can reach heights of up to 12ft with heads bigger than your hands, unless of course you are growing the dwarf variety which has a height of about 2ft. Sunflowers are known for being “happy” flowers, making them the perfect gift to bring joy to someone’s (or your) day. Young sunflowers track the sun, also referred to as heliotropism. A young sunflower’s face follows the sun from sunrise (east) to sunset (west) every day and repeats the cycle until maturity. As sunflowers reach maturity, it behaves differently. The overall growth of the plant slows down gradually, the circadian rhythm (their internal biological clock) ensures that the plant reacts more strongly to sunlight early in the morning than the afternoon or evening. A mature sunflower does not move with the sun throughout the day; rather, it just faces east. I feel that during lockdown the island experienced a ‘sunflower boom’… we have another few months to wait to see if a ‘baby boom’ also occurred!!!!! 15
