elcome to the September issue of Island Magazines and as you know I always like to give a little mention about the weather...
In this last month alone, we have had a heat wave that at times was unbearable and we’ve also had monsoon season with serious flooding across the Island. To say it’s been unpredictable is an understatement. Let’s see what September brings us! It seems that almost everyday somebody is being scammed and we have teamed up with IWASP (Isle of Wight Against Scams Partnership) to bring you the latest scams that are doing the ‘rounds’. There are some unscrupulous criminals trying every possible way to get people to part with their money. On page 9 you can find some of the latest scams reported to Trading Standards. In this issue you will find the regular news reports for your area and our ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on pages 18 and 19 will keep you informed of local and community events happening across the Island. If you have an event coming up, please feel free to send us the details via any of the means below. We have some great advertisers and as always please support them as it’s been a rough 18 months for many local businesses. I hope you have a great September and I look forward to catching up with you again next month.

WE ARE HERE! ANY QUESTIONS? ǁǁǁ͘ĐŽĂƐƩŽĐĂƐƚůĞ͘ĐŽŵ News report from Cllr Matthew Price for Whippingham, Newport & Fairlee • 07833 537668 • 01983 524320 matthewpricewhippingham@gmail.com Thank you to all residents who have been in touch over the last few months and please feel free to contact me. The dreadful traffic issues caused by the major roadworks throughout East Cowes has thankfully come to an end with the roads mostly finished. I am continuing to pursue the possibility of relocating Newport FC to Seaclose Park rather than the Racecourse site and these discussions are continuing between Council Officers and the Developer and I hope to have a final decision in the next few months. Those of you who may have missed the planning application to build a new Fuel Depot on the Whippingham Business Park, this was approved in June. This application is generally for domestic fuels for heating which since the depot in East Cowes closed down has been temporarily stored at Osborne which is a dreadfully inadequate site. This has led to a rise in fuel costs and at many times a shortage of fuel. The fuel depot will be a state-of-the-art facility and will be a fully sealed site with full bunding. This will ensure that not only will the site not be at risk of any contamination but will also leave no significant contamination when the transition to greener fuels becomes more practical. I did not want to be supporting a fossil fuel facility but given the thousands of households who rely on oil for heating their homes must have this available. I have managed to secure additional evergreen planting through the planning approval via conditions which will see the site very much disguised from sight. I look forward to meeting with many of you over the next four years and you can reach me on the details above.
Tractors….
Isle of Wight Shopmobility
For the past couple of years, the front cover of the September issue has been reserved for anything tractor themed! Two reasons for this… since a very young age I have always had a love of tractors and secondly when you live on an island, during harvesting season, you are never far from a tractor, ploughed field, farmland or dare I mention it stuck behind one in traffic. I have recently moved from my central rural location at Arreton and must admit I miss seeing the tractors, trailers and all manner of agricultural machinery passing my window.

Thankfully, I have been able to satisfy my South Street, Newport, fix of tractors by tuning into the much Isle of Wight PO30 1JF talked after TV show, Clarkson’s Farm. When this was first brought to my attention Registered Charity Number 1187550 I ummed and ahhed about watching it as I was no Jeremy Clarkson fan… However, I can be the first to admit I was wrong, and this is probably the best For a caring and compassionate service show I have seen in 40 Place Road, Cowes. Trading Standards have some more scams for you to be aware of. Residents have reported scams from the following – • A call from someone claiming to be from TV insurance, stating that their insurance had expired and it needed to be renewed. They claimed the resident owed £180 but they didn’t have any insurance and had recently changed their television. The caller then insisted that they needed to pay and they couldn’t pay in instalments, they went as far as to demand they use a credit card, go overdrawn or borrow money from a friend. Luckily the resident reported this to a trusted contact who confirmed that this was definitely a SCAM. • We have received reports of callers ringing residents to say that they want to check their meters, implying they are from SSE. On checking the number online there are large numbers of complaints about it. If in doubt check with SSE to confirm if the call is genuine • Action Fraud has received over 700 reports from members of the public about fake emails purporting to be from the NHS. The emails claim to be able to provide people with a “digital passport” that “proves you have been vaccinated against COVID19”. These emails are fake, and the links within them lead to genuine-looking websites that steal your personal and financial information. Remember, the vaccine is free of charge. At no point will you be asked to pay. • Emails have been received purporting to be from the HMRC stating ‘ if you do not reply to this email with the details required, you will not be eligible for any refunds from HMRC’ – this is a SCAM and legitimate organisations will never contact you in this way. You can check if a phone number is a scam – put the number that called you into google and select the website who-called.co.uk this will tell you if the number is definitely or likely to be a scam and quite often others who have received it will comment on their experience. Reporting a Scam • For advice on scams call - Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline: 0808 250 5050 • To report a scam call - Action Fraud: 0300 123 2040 If you are concerned about somebody you care about or for more information on scams visit www.iwasp.org.uk 9

News Report from Town & County Cllr Karl Love - East Cowes. Email: karl.love@iow.gov.uk Facebook: Cllr Karl Love What a month August turned out to be with extreme weather and flash floods, a scaled down Cowes Week and our town Elephant Festival picnic washed out. Our thanks go to Kai and Stevo our towns local clown comedy duo who performed Magic and with an appearance from Spiderman. Also performing were local act Juke Box Jazz’s from East Cowes who struggled against the elements to entertain people. I certainly enjoyed their music, and we hope to welcome them back soon. What a fantastic fireworks effort made by the gang at the Waverley Park Holiday Centre who put on a display for the last night of the Cowes Week Regatta. It certainly made an impression and was the first time in many years that a fireworks display has taken place in East Cowes. The cheering afterwards could be heard from across the river from those enjoying an evening out along the West Cowes esplanade. We have had a few issues with the paddling pool this summer but finally it is fixed and back in use. I hope the weather improves so it can be enjoyed. The paddling pool is a story of heritage and virtually everyone with roots in the town has a story to tell about the pool. It’s likely that more work will need to be done on the pool this winter. The town council is committed to maintaining this valuable asset for community use. There are discussions taking place to develop a town emergency plan. With the coming of a new island council administration there is an improving focus on localism and in conjunction with the town council, myself and our island administration work has finally started in developing a town emergency plan for incidents which occur when Red Funnel
operations fail, or their service is suspended. Discussions have been taking place at IWC, our Town council and town Mayor Michael Paler has been in contact with Fishbourne Parish Council. They too often experience similar highway issues. I wrote to the City of Southampton council but thy have not replied yet. There is strength in working together to resolve these issues. A broader emergency plan is being developed for our town and island gateway. The reported electronic Visual Messaging System (VMS) for East Cowes will soon be put in place, part funded by IWC and Red Funnel. Signs will be located at the Racecourse roundabout and on the approach to East Cowes enabling vehicles to take action to avoid entering the town and escape queuing. They will also be used to advise about the floating bridge service too. I and the Town Council asked for these signs to be placed several years ago. You will recall the VMS units being used at the Racecourse. Our administration’s efforts to resolve the issues of the floating bridge continue and there will be an announcement coming about the actions to be taken this Autumn. You will all have noticed that work has started on the new community hub attached to the town hall. This will bring a new dimension supporting community facilities in our town. The project will hopefully be completed by summer 2022. I have raised the issues which many of you have raised with me about street cleaning and weeds growing in the streets and gutters. The previous administration in its attempts to balance the budget renegotiated the PFI contract with Island Roads in an attempt to cut costs and balance the Isle of Wight budget. Our Council is
News Report from Cllr Karl Love continued required every year to make savings as the government continues to inflict austerity on us and reduce the grants they provide to our Island council. 3 million of cuts for 2021/22 and again for the next three years. It is impossible to make savings without it having significant impacts on frontline services and the weeds are a sign of things to come! However, our administration is trying to renegotiate this contract, but our Island funding reality is very testing for us all. I hear your concerns saying ‘but we are all paying more every year and receiving less’. This is true. We have a small island workforce supporting an aging population who deserve the very best services that we can afford to provide. The government cuts to our budgets are insurmountable now. A 1% council tax rise is equivalent to 850k and with rising cost our council cannot keep up with the cuts imposed on us and overcome rising costs. If this government does not stop cutting our grants we will eventually go BUST. This is a fact and one the previous administration knew. They too were equally powerless to resist government cuts. It’s crunch time! We must decide what really matters and it’s a terrible position for us all to be in. This government has brought us and many other UK councils to our knees. We must keep the support in place for our most vulnerable people and so that’s why you see weeds growing in our streets. I needed to explain this to you all and I will always be transparent in this matter. We also have a rented housing crisis and a workforce shortage across our Island business and care sector. I’m trying hard to raise the profile of this and have asked the government for an Adult Social Care funding solution to help ease the pressures. Our MP does not reply to my emails. He needs to communicate and represent our island’s urgent needs, but he seems completely out of touch.
A group of residents are organising out of the Town Hall to litter pick and help keep our town clean. If you would like to join them, please contact the Town Clerk. In other news, Cllr Sharon Lake continues to work on the landslip community project but is being held up by red tape as she gallantly battles on to make a difference for our community. Work will commence this autumn and we hope it will make a real difference for our entire community. Discussions have been taking place about the creation of an East Cowes Waterfront Plan. This is being led by IWC and funded by Red Funnel in part. We must be a part of this planning process to understand the implications, consider the impacts and try to influence the development of lands not in our ownership. This plan does not include the esplanade but may help provide some opportunities to improve the area. There is no news about the works being undertaken on the former Frank James Hospital or the Norris Castle development. Nor is there any news about the Millfield Ave proposed development. When I hear anything, I will let you know. Finally, congratulations to young Steven Caul who completed a Skydive raising funds for Kezi’s Kindness. You can see his video by joining the Facebook group of KEZI’S KINDNESS and follow them as they support local charities and children. The funds raised by Steven are for a new piece of equipment to be placed in the Bumble Bee Garden in Hawthorn Meadows. Take care and enjoy the rest of the summer. 15
