At FYTbus we try to ensure that the service we give comes as close to meeting the needs of our passengers as possible. People’s needs change, of course, as time goes by, so we try to keep up with them by doing a survey from time to time. Our independent community minibus service has now been “on the road” for more than 5 years, and in that time we have been very pleased and proud to have received recognition from Community Action Isle of Wight, and from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth in her Jubilee Awards last year. What really matters to us, however, is how our passengers feel about the service, whether it suits their needs, and has made a difference to their lives, or if it could be improved upon – so another survey is imminent! Copies of it will be available on our buses, so that passengers can take one home to complete and then return it next time they’re on the bus. Alternatively, you will be able to obtain one by calling at our Totland office, or visiting our website and completing it online. We’re always happy to hear from passengers, and potential passengers, and comments on our service are always welcome. Our advert and contact details are on the back page.

FRESHWATER PARISH COUNCIL The Freshwater Parish Council (FPC) is holding its Annual General Meeting on the 28th March in the Tennyson Suite at the Memorial Hall and we hope you are/were able to attend. It is an opportunity to inform our community on the work of Freshwater Parish Council over the past year and to set out the remit of various Sub Committees and Steering Groups. We will give a full update on the outcome of the meeting in the next issue as well as keeping you informed of completed and ongoing Projects such as Avenue Road Improvement Scheme, Freshwater Library, The Just Ask! Project, Freshwater Neighbourhood Plan, Freshwater Allotments, Moa Place and Gate Lane Public Conveniences, Freshwater Bay Green Improvements and set out our aspirations for the next twelve months.
These will take place on May 4th. As we are a democratically elected body there is a probability that it will mean there will be some new faces. The first meeting of Freshwater Parish Council took place in 1894 under the Chairmanship of Hallam Lord Tennyson and is the tier of Local Government closest to the people. The current members have always tried to keep away from being ‘political’ as it important that we are there to represent the whole local community without being directly influenced by party politics. Of course, political decisions taken by central government and the Isle of Wight Council have a major influence but by involving you in our Consultation Event the community is part of our decision process thus helping us to make the right decisions. For a full list of our responsibilities and our remit please visit our website www. freshwater-parish.org.uk
The financial climate has dictated how we have reacted to the reduction in services provided by IWC but I am confident that the ambition and optimism displayed by the FPC Freshwater Parish Council is split into two ‘Wards’, Norton and Afton. Report from Stuart Hutchinson: West Wight Ward. White Acre, Main Road, Wellow, Yarmouth PO41 0TD Tel:760048 email stu.hutch@btinternet.com. Green energy is something that concerns most of us here in the West Wight from time to time. The biggest concerns were raised by the proposals to put giant Turbines on land just west of Broad Lane, and also along the crest of the downs just outside Brighstone. Although they had their supporters, the projects were almost universally opposed and rejected by the Planning Committee. The Brighstone project was appealed and lost. Conversely, there have been many successful applications for solar panels, which have attracted very little concern. They have now been installed, and though are not very efficient, operate silently and are little noticed. West Wight Ward has half the Island’s solar energy installations. I opposed the turbines but supported the solar panels.
kilos (2.2 lbs) so about a thousand loaves from a tonne. A thousand tonnes is a million loaves. So the plant would consume grain which could have produced 8 million loaves. Turning food into electricity is bonkers when there are people starving in Africa. Fortunately, that madness was scrapped.
But here’s the snag, digesting a tonne of grain produces much more energy than a tonne of silage. So the applicants are saying that they will now need to use not just 20,000 tonnes of silage but 54,000 tonnes. Much of that will come from the west wight and will leave the farms loaded on 24 tonne tractors and trailers carrying about 14 tonnes each of silage. We saw the problems on the roads last year when smaller quantities were moved. These juggernauts trundle along at 20mph blocking all the small lanes. Fakeaways are the New Takeaways We are all beginning to understand the importance of healthy eating and this doesn’t mean you have to give up your favourite indian takeaway - instead you need a fakeaway... why should you miss out on a little of what you fancy. The advantages are you can make them healthier and they are good for the wallet. This month I have called upon the experts and below you will find a mouthwatering curry recipe from Four Seasons Cookery Academy. Turkey Korma© 2 Turkey Breast Steaks cut into cubes 1 Onion – diced Good Squeeze Garlic Puree/4 cloves fresh Garlic finely chopped 1 large Tablespoons Korma Spice Blend 1 Chicken Stock Cube – preferably low salt - (crumbled) 1 handful dessicated Coconut www.cookeryacademy.co.uk 1 small Tub Half-fat Crème Fraiche 1 Red Apple – cored – cut into wedges and then halved – (peel on) Gently fry the Onions and Garlic in a smidge of Olive Oil until Onions are soft. Add Korma Spice and cook gently for a couple of minutes. *Always cook spices early on in the dish to allow flavours to develop*. Add Turkey and cook until browned (approx 8 minutes). Keep stirring so that it doesn’t stick to the pan If it starts to stick, add a little of the Crème Fraiche to avoid adding more oil. Add the Apples, Stock Cube and Creamed Coconut and cook gently for approximately 5 – 10 minutes until Apples have slightly softened. Remove pan from the heat and stir through the Crème Fraiche. Re-heat gently and serve with Wholegrain Rice. Curries are always thought of as being ‘fattening foods’ and indeed they can be. GREENWOOD BUILDERS
GEORGE CAMERON CANDIDATE FOR FRESHWATER NORTH I am proud to live in Freshwater and I have been living here for many years and I will be standing in this election to represent local residents. An increasing amount of residents have asked me to support them in solving local issues and I believe that I can continue to make a difference to Freshwater residents as I have a wealth of experience to offer as a councillor since having already represented two other wards in the West Wight in as many terms. I have been representing residents on the Parish Council since 2003 and am very much aware of local issues and I hope by voting for me on the 4th of May you will give me the chance to represent you and fight your corner in County Hall. I do not support large-scale developments in Freshwater because we are at saturation point with building and infrastructure problems. But, I do support small-scale, appropriate and sensible developments because we are in need of housing for our local residents especially younger island families. As in the past, I enjoy working as a team and with other agencies, for example our local Police, in order to have a healthy and safe environment to live in. We need to provide ample facilities for our young people to enjoy so that they can bond with their friends in sport and exercise alike and I will do my best to support them. I think we have some of the best playing fields on the Island and if you have any ideas on how to utilise them more efficiently please let me know and I will follow it up. We also have some of the Islands most beautiful beaches and to have this on our doorstep is a privilege but they need to be looked after and protected. I will fight to keep it as it is now for our future generations to enjoy. Other areas like Fort Victoria, Golden Hill Fort, Afton Marsh and Colwell Bay are just some of the fantastic outdoor facilities we have and which are visited by many people across the Island. These areas are our gems in the West Wight and I will fight for them to stay protected from any changes that will damage their beauty. A Feathered Friend
The last few issues we have had the pleasure of sharing pictures on the front cover from some local talented amateur photographers and this months issue is no exception. The fabulous front cover picture was taken at Alverstone Mead Nature Reserve by Viki Taylor who has been very lucky to get regular close up photos of these feathered friends as well as the red squirrels who are also frequent visitors.

Viki is Island born but lived away for a while, returning in 2011. As well as having a love for fur and feather Viki has a passion for landscapes, seascapes and event photography such as Round the Island Race, Cowes Week and air displays, particularly if the Red arrows are involved. Viki’s husband rides trial bikes and she has become the unofficial Isle of Wight Motorcycle Club photographer, spending weekends (sometimes in the mud) capturing the riders as they manoeuvre through the courses. Viki believes her passion for photography came from her late dad, Charles Everest, who was a newsreel cameraman and freelance photographer. He was involved with the 1970 IW Festival and his archive of images is amazing and some form part of the permanent Festival exhibition at Dimbola Lodge.

Fake it - don’t bake it! Cancer... it’s a devastating disease and can attack anyone and skin cancer alone comes in many forms and some people don’t realise that Melanoma is the most aggressive and deadliest. You see a mole that may have changed colour or size, and you get it checked out and they remove it, and if you are very lucky this might be the end of your cancer story but for many this is just the beginning. Local business owner, partner, mum, daughter and friend, Debbie Keynes first noticed a lump on her head and her nurse’s intuition kicked in and she sought medical help and was told that she must do an agonising 4 week wait to see if any changes occurred. Nothing good came from waiting and after lots of tests, biopsies and anxious waiting Debbie was diagnosed with Melanoma. She has now undergone surgery to remove the cancer along with 37 lymph nodes, Debbie’s head and neck resembles a patchwork quilt boasting a total of 56 stitches. She is a constant visitor to the hospital, racking up well over 20 appointments. Her long brunette hair hides the bald patch that will always be a constant reminder of what she has fought and what she will continue to fight every day of her life. Debbie has recently had another CT scan and the Melanoma has spread and she is now receiving immunotherapy every 3 weeks at Southampton General – so her battle is still very real but she is continuing to fight it... 14
Debbie knew that pushing her doctor and specialists to ensure she got the diagnosis as fast as she could would greatly increase her chances and she insists that anybody who has a lump, changes in a mole or anything which could be a trigger to seek medical advice immediately and not to ignore it. International Health organisations agree that sun exposure and sun beds are the main causes of skin cancers. The recent increase in the number of people taking last minute cheap holidays abroad may contribute to the rising number of melanoma cases. People who receive the highest exposures to the sun have about 20-35% higher risks of melanoma, but sun burn at any age doubles the risk of malignant melanoma. Help yourself by using lots of sun cream, staying in the shade and wearing a hat. Remember the sun is at its deadliest between 11am and 3pm. Debbie is in a support group and she has watched fellow sufferers lose the battle and some of these people have been in their 20’s and 30’s so its not a mature persons disease – cancer has no age limit. Her business DSK Training is an Island based company which specialises in health and social care training and Debbie has taken on a challenge to educate as many people as possible to bring awareness to this deadly disease and is offering training courses to businesses and groups, especially hairdressers and beauticians who may see the signs before anyone else. The profit from these courses will go directly to Melanoma UK. For more information and contact details go to www.dsktraining.co.uk
