Welcome to the April issue of Island Magazines. The year is chugging along nicely and Spring is definitely in the air. April is sometimes a wet month but ‘April Showers Bring May Flowers’ and if we are heading into a lush summer like last year then the flowers and trees will appreciate this extra bit of rain that may or may not happen. Easter is a bit later this year with Easter Sunday on the 21st April. The shelves in the shops are full of chocolate goodies and traditional eggs (and some have been this way since Boxing Day). Hopefully the weather will be good and perhaps this will be the start of the barbecue and picnic season. The Island is definitely coming alive again after a sleepy winter and you can find details of events happening across the Island on pages 10 and 11. Watch out for April Fools on the 1st day of the month!!!! I hope you enjoy reading your local community magazine each month and please where possible support the advertisers by using their services and telling them you saw them advertised here. I hope you all have a cracking April and look forward to catching up with you next month.

Freshwater Parish Council
Working For The Community. Cllr Gill Kennett
2019/20 Parish Precept - Freshwater Parish Council have set their precept for the 2019/20 financial year and we were helped in this by the feedback that we received from people attending our consultation day, those people who responded to our on-line survey and people emailing in. Thank you all for your input it was very helpful to the Parish Council to have the feedback and I hope that we have reflected all of the issues you raised in our final budget. Island Planning Strategy - Freshwater Parish Council met with the other West Wight councils to talk through the response to the planning proposals for our part of the Island. The consensus of all the West Wight councils was that the amount of housing proposed in the strategy exceeded that which would be expected in a rural area. Freshwater PC has responded to each of the areas proposed for our Village and we feel that the amount of additional housing for Freshwater is excessive and not sustainable and that was the basis of our response to the consultation. We do appreciate that some housing is needed in the Village. Housing that is affordable for local residents would be supported but we cannot support the proposed levels of additional development. We have noted that the Island’s MP, Bob Seeley, has also responded to the Isle of Wight Council stating that he believed that the proposal for an additional 10,000 homes would not be appropriate. Our Place - It has been a while since I have updated on all that is happening at Our Place. Our Place is held each Tuesday morning 10.00 to 12.30 at the Community 4
Centre at the front of West Wight Sports and Community Centre. The drop-in session is open to all and as well as advice being available from the CAB, Housing, Solicitors and a host of other agencies ready to help and give advice the Our Place volunteers are also there to help. Tea, coffee, and some pretty good cake are always available together with a wide range of activities. Please feel free to drop in. All Saints School - The Isle of Wight Council’s consultation on the West Wight Primary Schools has opened and the suggestion may be that All Saints School in Freshwater might be considered for closure. I am sure that you have all become aware of the campaign to keep the school open. The Parish Council will respond to this consultation and at our Parish meeting on the 5th March we met with parents and supporters of All Saints School who all felt very strongly that the school should indeed remain open. Since 1715 there has been a village school in the vicinity of Moa Place and in January 1851 a new school was built “The National School” on the current site (thanks to Freshwater and Totland Archive Group). Freshwater is the largest Village on the Island and to lose our school would be a very sad thing. Whilst speaking of School Green the spring flowers along the brook this year have been really lovely I hope this might be an indicator of a good spring and summer.

News report from Cllr Steve Hastings - Central Wight Mobile: 07870127024 E-mail: steve.hastings@iow.gov.uk Twitter - @cllr_hastings Asian Hornet Threat to Bees Islanders are being asked to look out for signs of the Asian Hornet, which is sweeping across Europe currently and has no natural predator itself but is an aggressive predator to our insects including the Honey Bee putting all of our pollinators at risk. The Asian Hornet is smaller than our native hornet and has a darker abdomen with an orange segment and has yellow legs. If you suspect that you see an Asian Hornet or its nest, take a clear photo and immediately advise and send your photo to one of the following: Asian Hornet Watch App - through iPhone and Android or e-mail: alertnonnative@ceh. ac.uk For further information on Asian Hornets Visit: www.nonnativespecies.org or www.nationalbeeunit.com Facebook – Isle of Wight Asian Hornet
Nests look similar to a wasp nest and are found near to the ground often but can also be found high up in trees. Green Waste Subscriptions Residents are reminded that if they have or would like an annual subscription for the Green Waste Collection they must re apply via the council website under green waste as the subscription does not roll over. The cost is just £60 for the year and this entitles you to a collection every two weeks throughout the year. You have to apply/re-apply by the end of April 2019 for the coming municipal year. IT App development Residents might be interested to know that I am attempting to get the council’s IT department to develop an App that can be used to report fly tipping, graffiti, parking issues, dog fouling, litter, drainage problems and many other issues. This would be an easy to use App with options to report and photo upload with location that would be sent directly to the department responsible for immediate action straight from your smart phone. I will update you when I have made a continued over the page
