Welcome to the April issue. I’m not sure where to start this month, but feel that I have to mention the Coronavirus outbreak that seems to be the only topic in the news at the moment. It’s a very unpredictable time with nobody really knowing how this is going to pan out. We must continue good hand hygiene and just take it one day at a time. Now on to something positive... whilst I’m writing this the sun is shining and I have washing on the line and it seems to be drying. Let’s hope this is a sign of what is to come. Easter is just around the corner and there are many Easter themed events happening across the Island. Our ‘Dates for your Diary’ section can be found on pages 10, 11 and 12. Please note with the ongoing issues around Coronavirus some of the listed events may be subject to change. This month’s issue is once again packed with news and information along with some great features and advertisers. I hope you enjoy reading this issue and I look forward to catching up with you next month.

News report from Cllr Steve Hastings. Mobile: 07870127024 E-mail: steve.hastings@iow.gov.uk Twitter - @cllr_hastings The Tour of Britain Final Stage 2021 IOW - The leader of the council has unveiled the route of the Tour of Britain finale should plans to hold it here prove successful. Negotiations are progressing between the Isle of Wight Council and event organisers Sweet Spot to ensure the final stage of the 2021 cycle race takes place on the Island. At a meeting of the Isle of Wight Association of Local Councils (IWALC), Cllr Dave Stewart revealed the route competitors would take. This is of course great news for the Island and will give great opportunities to Island businesses such as Hotels B & B’s, restaurants, Café’s and Caravan/Camp sites but what about our cycle ways? Surely if we are going to promote cycle racing here, we should also be promoting the safe use of cycling on a daily bases which would also fit in with our new climate change strategy and action plan developed through our Task and Finish Group as part of the Regeneration and Neighbourhoods Scrutiny Committee.

These routes would need to be off road and purpose built for safety and confidence of parents to allow this to happen. John and I will be talking to officers to look for some funding from Government, especially since Boris Johnson’s announcement of more money available for buses and cycles recently. We both feel that this is such a good opportunity that it should not be missed and whenever new roads are proposed, good cycle routes should be a major part of the plans. My reaction to proposals to raid council reserves - I would love to take £1m from reserves or anywhere else for the purpose of promoting more environmental projects, however I don’t feel that this is the right time to be raiding reserves and perhaps we should be looking for avenues such as grants etc. from Government for this purpose.

I have had discussions with officers as part of our Climate Change Strategy to do a similar thing to that proposed by Cllr Lilley but starting with smaller amounts and put a strategy in place with policies to assist with Environmental projects but this Both Cllr John Hobart and myself Cllr Steve Hastings attend these meetings and should be done properly and set out with along with Natasha Dix our hard working a plan and not just grab a million from our precious reserves. Strategic Manager for Waste and Energy have created the new strategy following Considering the process we have just on from our cross party declaration of a been through with Budget discussions and climate emergency on the Island, so this would seem to us that this is an ideal time finding of savings and how close we have come to having to use a great chunk of to develop safe cycle routes across the reserves just to set a legal and balanced Island and get more people out of their budget, I don’t feel comfortable taking cars and onto two wheels and you never know we might find a budding champion if from reserves prior to having a settlement more of our youth are inspired to cycle to from Government on the fair funding review and our requested Island Deal which school and college. 4

News report from Cllr Steve Hastings has been promised but is not in place yet, especially as we have another budget year coming down the line. I feel it is important to keep up our reserves for real emergencies and not deplete them at this time of risk when we still need to find savings or more income opportunities. COVID19 - Key messages for members to pass on: Elected members have a role to play in reassuring and informing the public. Advice and guidance on COVID19 can change rapidly and it is important that the messages the public hear are consistent and accurate. For this reason the Isle of Wight Council is advising all public enquirers to look at the www.nhs. uk/coronavirus website for the latest information. This website provides a link to the online 111 coronavirus service which provides advice to returning travellers and people who may be concerned about coronavirus infection following contact with a confirmed case. A key piece of advice for everyone, including the public, officers, and members is to practice good hand and respiratory hygiene. At present, unless specifically advised by Public Health England (PHE) or NHS 111 in relation to travel or contact with a confirmed case of COVID-19, elected members can go about their normal duties, and no specific actions are needed.

Not Gone… Just Relocated! Visitors to the hospital will have noticed that The Friends of St Mary’s have moved from the foyer cafe at the main entrance to make way for a commercial outlet. The new Friends’ cafe is now located in the north end of the hospital, next to the Outpatients Department. Although it is “very much smaller” the volunteers are staying positive. Chairman, Lesley Myland says “it all feels a bit strange at the moment for the cafe not to be in the foyer, but we are determined to carry on serving patients, visitors and hospital staff with our cafes, the twice daily trolley service to the wards, and from our brand new shop. As you know, every penny of profit we make goes to assisting the hospital to buy equipment which makes patient and staff experiences better. Please keep supporting us as you always have so that we can build on the £1.5 million we have already raised in recent years. The new shop is bigger and we are improving our range of refreshments, cards and gifts. We are in a better position now too, as we open directly on to the main corridor opposite the reception area at the front of the hospital. “An excellent team So that has been an offering an exciting challenge”. invaluable service” You can still find NEW! Book online www.mobilevetsurgery.co.uk the Friends serving Stress-free Islandwide “Friendly & reliable refreshments at professional yet Home Visits & the Laidlaw Day very caring” Central Vet Surgery Hospital and now at their new location. You will find their usual good coffee or tea, sandwiches, Keyhole CT toasted teacakes, a Surgery Scans variety of snacks and Watergate Rd, Newport, PO30 1XP 01983 212999 newspapers. And of course the usual warm welcome and good service they have been providing for 32 years at St Mary’s. Don’t forget that they are also in the Ryde Wellbeing Centre. 7

Freshwater Parish Council

Working For The Community. Cllr Anne Bamford

Precept - This April we have put our precept up by just 3%. This covers all the things that we are now responsible for as a parish council including supporting the library, West Wight Sports and Community Centre, our Community Connector Adam, Just Ask Mel, The Memorial hall, Skatepark and MUGA, land management, allotments, boat park as well as our increasing list of smaller projects. I would like to thank both the councillors and clerks for all the work they undertook to prepare the 2020/2021 budget prior to setting the precept. It is important for us to consult with the residents of Freshwater and we did this through our Consultation Day in January. Cllr Fleury, Chair of Finance, stated ‘I am acutely aware that we must get value for money, which after all is public money, and we will always attempt to obtain grants towards our major projects, operating within current Financial Regulations’.

Land Management - Cllr Murphy hopes you enjoyed the beautiful array of spring flowers along School Green Road. The first blossoms are now appearing on the fruit trees, alongside the daffodils and primroses in our new community orchard on The Stroud. Four hundred and twenty new native trees have been planted around bordering areas of both The Stroud and Jubilee field. These areas have been formed to encourage more wildflowers and wildlife, the grass will not be mowed in these areas. The next part of the plan is to develop more edible planting in public areas around the village and to eventually establish an edible landscapetrail. Allotments - Our allotments are located within the village wildlife corridor along Longhalves Lane. It is a lovely location for

local residents to be able to grow their own food. They are very popular and we always have a long waiting list. Five plots have now become available this year and have been allocated to people that have been waiting the longest. The fees cover the maintenance work that has to be carried out during the year. Unfortunately due to the loss of 19 plots because of badger problems we are no longer able to offer plots to Totland residents. Clodagh Pearce our Administrative Assistant manages the allotments and if you phone the parish office she will always be happy to answer your questions or queries. Boat Park - We now have the lease to the Boat Park and the surrounding area which is situated at Freshwater Bay. Emma Carter our Assistant Clerk now has a new role with managing the area and we will soon be renting out spaces with yearly permits. We already have a waiting list. If anyone wishes to rent a space to store their boats, please get in contact with Emma on 752000 or mail your contact details to emma.carter@freshwater-parish.org.uk Just Ask Mel - Our Place continues for the time being – including our new family sessions running Thursdays 3pm – 5pm at West Wight Sports and Community Centre. We’ll be weaving our way into the Easter season with our Yarn Art for Families sessions. Bring the children along for some crafting fun (plus toast and jam). In light of Coronavirus we will be monitoring the situation and will be making decisions regarding future Our Place sessions shortly. Great to see the village looking so lovely as it begins to bloom.

Your Local Independent Minibus Service

APRIL 2020

COVID-1 (CORONAVIRUS) What FYTbus is doing to protect our passengers and volunteers:We don't want the people who use and work for our service to be put off by the fear of catching the virus, so we have equipped our minibuses with handgel and tissues, and our crews are regularly wiping down all the surfaces that passengers touch (handrails, seat-belt fasteners, headrests, etc.,) at regular intervals during their shifts, in an effort to give some protection to our highly valued volunteers and our cherished passengers. N.B. If anyone should feel unwell whilst aboard the bus, they should let the crew know, so that they can be taken home, and the contact details of the other passengers on the bus will be taken as a precaution.

FYTbus TIMETABLES, including our popular CREDIT-CARD SIZED version, are available on our buses and on our website (see below), or you can pick one up from our Totland office, Brookside Health and Leisure centres, libraries, pharmacies and shops in Freshwater, Totland and Yarmouth.

APRIL EXCURSIONS. As usual, these will be on a door to door basis, with the minibus picking you up from and delivering you back to your home.
