Totland Parish Council News Welcome to the August report for Totland Parish Council. Summer has arrived, well it did the day this article was written and fingers crossed it still is.

a temporary licence for the Parish Council to maintain the school field and car park at the Weston School site. Councillors felt it was important to keep this area tidy and for the Community to continue using this asset.

Councillors and residents had raised concerns with the area by the Pier, firstly the large bins that were overflowing with rubbish and secondly the dangerous appearance of the Pier. At this point Biffa should have removed these bins and the Building Control Surveyor of the Isle of Wight Council has also visited the site. They carried out a site inspection to check the condition of the pier and it now appears that work is underway to stabilise the pier and repair the decking area. It was not considered dangerous but noted that materials had been loosely stacked on the pier. The contractors were asked to leave the site in a safe and secure manner and to ensure the public are aware of the danger on and around the pier with additional signage. The owner has responded and will be attending site and dealing with issues raised.

If you are still having problems with your bins and their collections please speak to the Clerk. Dairy Dates: Saturday 27th August Art & Craft on Turf Walk will be back this year. Please contact the Clerk if you would like a stall. Saturday 27th August Messy Church will be hosting an event on Colwell Common. Saturday 24th September Car Boot Sale, Colwell Common

Imagine being in the situation where you go from being fit and healthy leading a happy life without a care in the world to being told you have a brain tumour… Well this is what happened to Mark Grimes and everyday this is happening to children and adults across the world, the UK and on the Island. In a matter of moments your whole world can be turned upside down and vigorously shaken. The positive to this story is that Mark has survived and a year since being given the devastating news and undergoing brain surgery he has now returned to full duties at work as a fire fighter. Unfortunately this is not always the case for everyone… Mark and his wife Kathryn have taken this tragedy and learnt that this could happen to anyone, the tumour wasn’t hereditary and is not curable but it is controllable and through their journey they have realised that they were alone most of the time, there was only the minimum of help and support from others here on the Island and this is where The Wight Brainy Bunch originated. The aim of The Wight Brainy Bunch is to support and raise funds for Brain Tumour Charities and Smile4Wessex for intensive research purposes and for ongoing support to all patients. More closer to home they have set up a support group which is not just for the patient, but also for family and friends as they all need help and support for the changes that are taking place in their lives. The support group is held on the last Tuesday of the month at Wessex Cancer Trust, Lugley Street, Newport from 6pm -7pm but most times it runs over as new friendships are made and built upon. Anyone going through any brain trauma/injury is welcome to go along. You will be able to meet with other people who are going through or have been through the same and they may be able to offer advice and support so nobody need ever feel alone. The Wight Brainy Bunch has been holding fund raising events and in June they had their Mad Hatters Tea Party which raised a further £654 and so far in total they have raised £15,032. They hope to continue to raise much more than this and through their ongoing dedication they will be able to support many more Island families coping with this devastating disease. In an ideal world enough money could be raised so that facilities were available here on the Island to cut down on the stress of having to travel to the mainland for consultations and appointments. Their next big event is the Blue Light and Black Tie Charity Ball which is being held on Saturday 3rd September at Ryde Castle. Tickets are £35 and include a 2 course menu and you can book your tickets at www.thewightbrainybunch.org.uk/product/blue-light-black-tie-charity-ball-tickets or by calling 07850 255984. Please support this charity as much as you can as you never know who might be next to be affected by this disease as I bet you didn’t know that 16,000 people each year are diagnosed with a brain tumour and more children and adults under 40 die of a brain tumour than any other form of cancer. Before I met Mark and Kathryn I had no idea about these statistics and meeting them has opened my eyes and now I know why they are so passionate about The Wight Brainy Bunch and helping other families. 8

Report from Stuart Hutchinson: West Wight Ward. White Acre, Main Road, Wellow, Yarmouth PO41 0TD Tel:760048 email stu.hutch@btinternet.com. It was former Prime Minister Harold Wilson who said “a week is a long time in politics”. By golly the events of the last few weeks have proved him right. From the referendum on 23rd June and for the next month the political landscape changed almost daily. Although that frenetic pace has now slowed a little the adage still holds good. Personally I’m pleased that Theresa May is our new Prime Minister (at least I hope I still am, but bearing in mind what I’ve just said – it’s at least a week from writing this until it’s published!) because I was one of those who would have voted for her. Her sacking of George Osborne as Chancellor suggests she is somewhat softer on austerity than he was. That’s important for us here on the Island, because our Council is underfunded and struggles to provide the essential services that most of us need in our daily lives. Changes at national level affect us all. One of the things that could change is the proposal for Devolution which was driven by the Treasury under George Osborne. Devolution is the transfer of some powers from Government to be managed by a new Authority. I have written before about the previous proposal for the Island, Hampshire and the districts within it, together with the two cities and two national bodies all to co-operate as a single unit. That would have had a huge economic effect and being so large would have had some clout with government. It would have been difficult to reach an agreement, but was worth looking at. It looks as though that will not now happen. Hampshire is moving forward with its own scheme, called Heart of Hampshire, and the Island’s administration is favouring an authority based on just three councils; Portsmouth, Southampton and the Isle of Wight. 10

I don’t like that and have said so publicly at Scrutiny Committee, which itself has real reservations about what’s on offer. Although we travel via the cities and some Islanders shop or commute to work there, we have no shared Council services. They are large urban areas (Portsmouth is the most densely populated city outside London) with very different needs and aspirations to ours. We are a rurally oriented Council with small towns and many villages. I can’t see how two rival cities 14 miles apart and a mainly rural community on the other side of the Solent will have enough in common to make it work. If the new Authority is governed by a mayor and a representative from each of the three councils, which is the currently favoured proposal, the needs of the cities will take priority over ours. We will be regularly outvoted, just as the UK was in the EU. And how can a single mayor effectively represent such a disparate population? The prize (or bribe) is that the new Authority would have £30M a year grant to help pay for it’s services. But the services currently managed by government which would be devolved may already cost more than that. The new Authority would have the powers to raise money from us to pay for them. The Leader of Portsmouth has already said they have an ambition to build a light railway between the cities. That will be a huge cost. I see no benefit for us. There will be debates in Council over the coming months on the proposals, and fortunately it will be a decision for the whole Council, not just the ruling party, as to what we do. Perhaps we need our own referendum!?

FRESHWATER PARISH COUNCIL There is still much to keep Freshwater Parish Councillors busy.

Vectis to reconsider the future of the No.12 bus.

I welcome another new Parish Councillor, Vix Lowthion who, I am sure is known to many of you. I am confident that her enthusiasm and experience will be a major benefit to our Community.

With the increasing number of events being provided by the Friends of Freshwater Library, FPC are working with the Isle of Wight Council to undertake some minor repairs and improve the kitchen and toilet facilities within Freshwater Library in the near future.

After much deliberation we are currently extending our current office space within the Tennyson Suite at the Memorial Hall. This will help our Clerk and his team in the management of the Parish business which now includes responsibility for Freshwater Library and the Public Conveniences as well as significant areas of green space. Whilst I am still at this time unable to confirm a start date for the proposed highway works in Avenue Road, I have been advised that it is likely to be in early September. We will ensure that there is close liaison with all businesses in order to keep disruption to a minimum. I am hopeful that Island Roads will endeavour to address the unsavoury drainage problems experienced, as part of their works. FPC has, as you are aware, agreed to fund certain improvements to the street scene including increasing the amount of on-street parking, which it is hoped will be of benefit to all. Unfortunately, the ongoing maintenance of certain elements such as the planters and trees will not be the responsibility of Island Roads. I am very pleased, however, that we have now formed the Avenue Road Business Community (ABC), whereby businesses in Avenue Road have agreed to work with FPC to fund this work. We will be pleased to promote those members. This has been ambition of FPC for many years and I am hopeful that this represents a collective responsibility and desire to improve our Village. We will be endeavouring to correspond with other local Councils in order to lobby Southern

We have recently formally commented on the IWC Draft Parking Strategy. Whilst it contains much detail, it does in our opinion, fail to look to address local parking issues. FPC is keen to work with IWC in order to establish a parking strategy and charging regime that works for our businesses and community. I am pleased that FPC is able to support the Robert Hooke Society at the culmination of a week of events when the formal unveiling of a plaque commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Robert Hooke Memorial will be carried out by the Lord Lieutenant. This will take place in Hooke Hill at 12.30 on 24th July. Robert Hooke, born in Freshwater, was one of the most important scientists of the 17th century and a contemporary of Sir Isaac Newton, Samuel Pepys and Sir Christopher Wren. I can also mention that Freshwater and Totland Archive Group will be placing a memorial stone adjacent to the original site, recognising the significance of the former West Wight Middle School. Should you wish to contact any Freshwater Parish Councillor, in the first instance contact our Clerk, Michael Mills on 752000 or via email clerk@freshwater-parish.org.uk Enjoy the rest of the Summer! Mike Wheeler, Chair

When life gives you lemons make lemonade For a lovely refreshing summer drink, homemade lemonade ticks all the boxes. There are plenty of recipes out there from the deluxe to the basic. I like to think this one is midway. You won’t be tied to the kitchen spending hours making it but it definitely tastes better than dish water.

Take about 6 lemons (unwaxed preferably) and peel some strips of rind from a couple of them and put aside for decoration later. Give the lemons a good roll over the worktop to get the juices flowing and then cut in half and squeeze all that lovely juice out into a big jug (make sure to remove all the pips). Add 150g of caster sugar and stir. Then add two mugs of boiling water into the lemon juice and sugar mix and stir until all the sugar has dissolved. Next top up with 600ml of cold water and mix everything together. Put in the strips of peel for garnish and put in the fridge to completely cool. Serve with ice and lemon slices

As usual, these will be on a door to door basis, with the minibus picking you up from and delivering you back to your home. If you would like more information, do not hesitate to give us a call, between 09.45 and 12.30 any weekday, or leave a message on our answering machine and we’ll call you back. Remember to book early if you would like to travel on one or more of our trips, by phoning our office on 01983 752917. If a minimum number of bookings is not achieved for an excursion, we might have to cancel it (as you will appreciate, we have to cover our costs), but we will always let you know. Excursions will be confirmed (or cancelled) by phone, one day before departure. Please note that bus passes are not accepted on our excursions.

Have you considered volunteering for a good cause? With FYTbus you can volunteer to drive, or to assist passengers, or work in the charity shop, or help out at the garage or in the office.
