Welcome to the August issue and if you are a regular reader of Island Magazines I would like to take this opportunity to thank you on behalf of myself, advertisers and contributors for picking up a copy and supporting this popular community magazine. If you have only recently come across this publication I hope you find it an interesting read? Our main aim is to play a key part in the local community by sharing local news, information and supporting local businesses by offering them a platform to promote themselves and the services they offer. I always like to give a little mention about the weather, and all I have to say this month is wow.... it’s been hot! The Island is getting busy and the calendar is full with local events and carnivals and you can find details of these on pages 12 & 13. There is a lot of hard work from volunteers in the preparation of these events and I hope you get the chance to enjoy some or all of the carnivals that the various towns host. It’s what summer on the Isle of Wight is all about. I hope you all have a great August and I look forward to catching up with you next month.

Freshwater Parish Council
Working For The Community. Cllr Gill Kennett
Welcome to the August Freshwater Parish Council update
Freshwater Fete
notify the Parish Office and we will speak to the Neighbourhood Policing Team who are working with us on this issue.
Thank you to all of you who attended the Freshwater Fete on the 16th June. Unfortunately, unlike later weather, the sun did not shine and it was distinctly chilly. However, despite the lack of sun, which did come out later in the afternoon, the event raised over £800 for the 1st Freshwater and Totland Scouts, so well worth doing.
Parish Signage
Manorial Land
As you may be aware the Isle of Wight Council have commissioned a Regeneration Project to promote financial growth on the Island. Most of the regeneration projects identified are in Newport or the east of the Island. The one project identified for the West Wight is the creation of a cycle track through to Newport to link with the old railway line through to Yarmouth. We think that this would be a positive thing particularly for the growing number of cyclists we are seeing on the Island.
This is the “growing” time of year and I am sure, despite the hot weather in June and July, which you will all have noticed the fields and hedges growing rapidly. In Freshwater we are very fortunate as a parish to have a lot of manorial land. We have also acquired areas such as Stroud Field, Jubilee Field and Freshwater Bay Green from the Isle of Wight Council. Keeping all of this land tidy is quite a task and we are always grateful to residents who have flagged up problems on manorial land so that it can be quickly dealt with. The public footpaths come under the remit of Island Roads and again if you notice any footpaths that are becoming badly overgrown please notify Island Roads or the Parish Council who will be happy to pass on the message.
The Parish Council has commissioned some new parish signs to mark the boundaries of the Village. Freshwater is a large Village extending out as far as Compton and we felt it was time to update our signs. Hopefully these will be in place by the early autumn.
Car Parks
One thing that the Parish Council feel might help regeneration in Freshwater is to try and achieve some free parking in the Village possibly 2 hours free parking in Avenue Road Car Park. We are working on paper to the IWC to make the case. I know many of you also miss the 30 minutes parking in Moa Place and we will also ask if this can be reconsidered. We cannot make any promises at this point but the Parish Council will try and lobby for this.
You may have read in the County Press recently that we have had a spate of deliberate damage in the Village. One example was the “snapping” of a newly planted tree on Stroud. This was particularly Gill Kennett Chairman sad, as it was a memorial tree. Should you Freshwater Parish Council - 01983 755036 witness any vandalism could you please 4

News report from Cllr Steve Hastings - Central Wight Mobile: 07870127024 E-mail: steve.hastings@iow.gov.uk Twitter - @cllr_hastings Fire Service Consultation As reported last month there will be a review of the fire service and we now know that the consultation with residents will take place in September and this will be after the full business case is published. I would urge you all to take part in this consultation to let the Cabinet know your views. Brighstone Viaduct I attended the opening ceremony along with Cllr Ian Ward, the Cabinet member for Transport and Infrastructure and had the pleasure of cutting the ribbon to officially open the bridge. Island Roads have done a very good job and restored the bridge sympathetically to the original and used wooden barriers rather than metal to fit into the AONB. Environmental Conference We held an Environmental Conference at the Cowes Yacht Haven, which was well attended by all interested parties. Three workshops were held throughout the day to find ways of moving forward with regeneration of the Island but without spoiling what we have here and that which visitors come for. A very important part of the day was the signing of our application to UNESCO for Biosphere status, which I am confident we will achieve as we have all the right ingredients. This will give us greater protection whilst also increasing the right type of tourism as people come from all over the world to visit Biospheres in various parts of the world. 6
Arts Council for England Bob Seely MP, Cllr Hobart and myself met with the CEO and Southern Director of the Arts Council for England with a view to achieving funding to move forward with the setting up of an Arts and Culture Board on the Island in order to achieve ambitions of attracting investors in this field in the future. These discussions were very positive and Board members were identified with excellent qualifications and I felt we made the right impressions on the Arts Council to get the initial funding to move forward, a business case will now be put to them. Midsummer Fair in Shorwell Very well done to all those involved in the organising of the Midsummer Fair in Shorwell which was extremely well attended and on a wonderful sunny day. Anyone visiting the tea tent might have seen me helping out pouring tea and coffee and my wife, Beverley making cakes and serving them. This was hard work but really enjoyable with a great team around us, well done to all the volunteers. A big thank you to Northcourt where the Fair was held and I am looking forward to next year getting involved again, more of the same weather please! Chillerton and Rookley School I had the pleasure of visiting this school recently, what a lovely feel the school has and the garden is wonderful for the children to explore. They really do make the most of the space available; it is little wonder the school is so well liked by residents. continued over the page
News report from Cllr Steve Hastings continued I have been involved in discussions with the Cabinet Member for Education and Hampshire County regarding the way forward for the school and there seems to be a positive future ahead for them. Royal Solent Yacht Club My wife and I are very pleased to have been accepted as members of the RSYC in Yarmouth now and look forward to being a part of this wonderful club with the best view and most exciting waters around the Island. I know some of the residents of Central Wight are members and I look forward to seeing you there and meeting many others from the West Wight.

Totland Parish Council News This month’s update has a slight sadness as unknown youths have been disrupting our Open Spaces in a very callous way. The Parish Council has put a container on Colwell Common which stores fencing, tables and chairs for all the events we have started to hold on the Common and during June this container was graffitied along with the bus shelter on Colwell Common Road. At the beginning of July, Turvills Field was also damaged with seating being destroyed and fires started. It was reported that youth were drinking alcohol, smashing bottles and throwing bottles around the field. They also destroyed rubbish bins and continued to smash bottles on Madeira Road. A couple of nights later they were back at Colwell Common on the roof of the container and attempting to set fire to a tree. The Police have been involved and are patrolling the areas in the hope of catching them and dealing with them as necessary. The Parish Council urge you to ring 101 if you see anything troublesome in Totland as reporting them will help keep are village safe. Saturday 11th August 2018 - Art & Craft on Colwell Common We have some amazing artists coming to this event displaying their work. Refreshment will be available on site so come along and support this event. The gates open at 10am and run through until 4pm. If you would like further information please contact the Parish Office, details below, or go to the website under Events where you will find the application form. Upcoming Car Boots – Saturday 25th August. We are attracting some great sellers and offer refreshments on site. Sellers are welcome from 8.30am and buyers at 9am. As this is an outdoor event they are all weather permitting. No pre-booking is required just turn up. This year the
Parish Council are supporting two groups, West Wight Nursery and the 1st Freshwater/ Totland Scout Group. Men in Sheds is open on Thursdays between 2pm and 4pm and all are welcome at the Turf Walk. Clean Up Totland – The Parish Council have started their next campaign of poo Watch. We continue to receive complaints regarding the amount of dog poo in the area and irresponsible owners who do not pick up after their dogs. The point of this campaign is to encourage residents to report information, anonymously, to the Parish Council. Leaflets will be hand delivered through your door and this will give you the opportunity to help us catch these people who do not pick up after their dogs. Once completed these forms can be dropped back to the Parish Council Offices and new forms can be collected. CONTACT DETAILS: Parish Clerk – Mrs Helen Gibbs - Telephone 756028 Totland Parish Council, Winchester House, The Broadway, Totland Bay, PO39 0AX.
