Freshwater Parish Council

Working For The Community. Cllr Anne Bamford

Community Connector West Wight At our June meeting it was agreed that with the assistance of grant funding of £20,000 from Isle of Wight Council, under the agreement of match funding, that the parish would also contribute the same amount to fund this important position. We felt that the best place to deliver this project was through the West Wight Sports and Community centre. Adam Tucker, who was originally the West Wight Local Area Coordinator, started his new role at the beginning of July and now is able to continue his important role helping local people in our community. More details about the work that he does and how to contact him is on the West Wight Sports and Community Centre website. Facilities Officer The role of our facilities officer is to keep our village looking good through repairs, maintenance and generally clearing up different areas. At the end of June he mowed the grass at Edinburgh Road for children to be able to play football. In July he has been busy and jobs included fixing fencing and keeping the stream clear of rubbish at School Green Road. Even with dog bins nearby Shaun is still finding plastic bags stuffed into hedges by dog walkers especially around The Stroud area. He is able to get around our large area as the parish now has a van for him to use with our parish crest on it. All Saints School It was agreed at the Isle of Wight Council’s Cabinet meeting on the 11th July that there was approval for the next stage of the West Wight schools’ consultation process to 4

address surplus places in the area. The recommendation is for the closure of All Saints’ Primary School on the 3rd April 2020 and future expansion of Yarmouth CE Primary School. Yarmouth primary would relocate to the All Saints’ site once proposed building works are completed there. A public notice was published on the 19th July 2019 and this allows the public to make their views known. The council has extended this consultation period from four to nine weeks, closing on the 20th September 2019. Plastic Free Freshwater After a successful year of selling organic cotton bags last year which encouraged people not to take plastic bags with them around the village and on the beaches they are now back on sale at the Parish Office and at other venues around the village and £1 goes towards local community projects. Book Fair This will take place on 7th September 2019. It is to celebrate our literary heritage in Freshwater. Cllr Anne Bamford Chair Freshwater Parish Council

News report from Cllr Steve Hastings - Central Wight Mobile: 07870127024 E-mail: steve.hastings@iow.gov.uk Twitter - @cllr_hastings My Visit To Forest Road Recycling Plant with Picture shows Natasha Dix and Natasha Dix I on our visit to the Mechanical Treatment Plant in Forest Road with some of the bales As the new Cabinet Member for Procurement, of cans and plastics ready for recycling. This Waste Management and Special Projects I has been a long hard road for Natasha and she thought I had better get a visit in to the new deserves the credit for making this happen. Recycling Plant in Forest Road especially as When the plant opens after the next set of the site has had trials already with further trials probably around the beginning of next trials to come later this year with a view of year it will be the culmination of some 8 years opening fully by early next year. of hard graft, careful design work and contract The site is as impressive as it looks and will facilitate the diverting of 90% of our waste from going to landfill forward and any that can’t be recycled will be burned to produce energy. This energy will be able to provide power to the grid or even via direct lines could supply some of the council’s own buildings locally and of course it will cover its own running costs. The furnace will be so efficient that it will burn at very high temperatures and practically nothing will escape into the air, as it will contain every last piece of waste to turn into energy without the loss of fumes. The boiler was very impressive, about the size of small house and the radiator section was itself like a sidewall of a block of flats. On site you are reminded of its environmental credentials as you look through the site straight into the forest with all the green trees in view. Once the site is operational there will be visits for schools and other groups to learn all about it at the visitor centre, as Mathew Chatfield says, it could be the new visitor attraction for the Island, Waste World!! 8

negotiation with Amey.

I would like to put on record a big thank you to Natasha and her Waste Management Team at the Council for the award they were nominated to receive recently at the National Recycling Awards. Well done indeed! Resource Recovery Park – Forest Road The authority’s plans to improve waste and recycling management have been to the fore in recent years and will remain so in the future. Nearly 2,000 tonnes of garden trimmings and clippings were collected from the kerbside in 2018/19. The recycling rate for the Island now stands at 54 per cent, a rise of more than 90 places in national rankings, to 51st out of 345 local authorities. The new plant will mean

News report from Cllr Steve Hastings continued the Island will no longer have to process its recycling on the mainland, saving money in transport, creating energy from waste and reducing the carbon impact of our services. One of the new facilities is a mechanical sorting plant, which when in full operation will mean all the Island’s dry recycling will be sorted and graded in the plant, ready for market. The energy-from-waste facility will turn the fuel into electricity to power the site and for sale back to the National Grid.

Boom Boom!! This month’s front cover certainly shows the trust that can develop between wildlife and a photographer. Whilst relaxing and basking in the sunshine this beautiful creature was happy to be digitally captured by David Cramp. David is a ‘hobby photographer’ but started out in his school days as an artist, drawing and painting subjects that caught his eye and on occasions a bit of photography with a box camera. He then moved on to a different type of art and made a career as an antique restorer/french polisher but when digital cameras first appeared on the scene his interest in photography returned and has now become an extension of his art. What David would have previously painted he can now capture with his camera. His images are for his own personal use but are gaining plenty of attention when shared via social media. David says “there is no way in the world I could take photos to order – the subject has to be something that just catches my eye” and I am sure everyone will agree that this picture really does catch the eye.

Your Local Independent Minibus Service

AUGUST 2019

FYTBUS ALWAYS NEEDS VOLUNTEERS TO DRIVE OUR MINIBUSES AND ACT AS PASSENGER ASSISTANTS - Are you interested in joining us

to help your community’s access to local amenities and events ? We can train you to the required standard for a community minibus scheme. You can obtain an application form from our office or download it from our website (see addresses below) Don’t want to work on the bus but would still like to help out? Contact our office if you would like to volunteer in our charity shop, or help out at the garage or at the office, or assist with fundraising, or advertising,/ putting up posters or delivering timetables etc. You’ll be welcome.

FYTbus EXCURSIONS Our excursions and shopping trips are always on a door to

door basis, with the minibus picking you up from and delivering you back to your home. If you would like more information, give us a call, between 09.45 and 12.30 any weekday, or leave a message on our answering machine and we’ll call you back. Remember to book early if you would like to travel on one or more of our trips, by phoning our office on 01983 752917. If a minimum number of bookings is not achieved for an excursion, we might have to cancel it (as you will appreciate, we have to cover our costs), but we will always let you know. Excursions will be confirmed (or cancelled) by phone, one day before departure. Please note that bus passes are not accepted on our excursions.
