Feline Welfare - Isle of Wight

Registered Charity: 1084722

The recent lockdown has resulted in Feline Welfare being inundated with cats, not just strays and abandoned cats but many of them needing medical assistance. Her furry visitors all have one thing in common, they are looking for a loving and caring home, whether this is via full adoption or with foster parents!! New arrangements are in place allowing prospective owners to spend time with any cats they are interested in adopting. Here are just a few of the really special ones that want you to pick up the phone and call so you can come and meet them. Call anytime on 521778. ‘Nibs’ is a lovely extroverted, playful 4 years old boy who loves everyone. He gets on well with other cats… well, as long as they are nice to him!! Well Hello There… All I can say about this month’s front cover picture is WOW… I’m sure you will all agree with me that the photo is stunning and is all thanks to local photographer Tara Harvey. Tara knows the secret to such a great shot is waiting patiently while building a trust with the subject. Her patience certainly paid off and she was rewarded with some stunning poses from not just this fox but the whole family. When Tara isn’t waiting patiently for the perfect photo she is kept busy with her daytime job as a ‘super seamstress’, where she does alterations to wedding dresses and also every day wear such as shortening trousers, skirts or adjusting the fit on a piece of clothing. As well as working “An excellent team with a well know offering an bridal company, she invaluable service” also has her own NEW! Book online www.mobilevetsurgery.co.uk business, ‘Alterations by Tara’ and has recently been kept busy making masks to help stop the spread of the virus. For more information about ‘Alterations by Tara’ find her page on Facebook or call on 07956 208735.

One thing you can also be certain of with Tara is that she is either in front of her sewing machine or behind her camera. A BIG thank you to Tara for allowing Island Magazines to use her photo and I have a feeling that with talent like this her photos will be featured on a few more front covers. 5

Freshwater Parish Council

Working For The Community. Cllr Anne Bamford

West Wight Heritage Centre

Freshwater Parish Council (FPC) are pleased to announce that they have taken on a lease for a shop in Avenue Road, Freshwater. The premises are to enable the Freshwater and Totland Archive group to have a proper base for the documents, pictures, books, and other artefacts that they have acquired over the years. For several years, the group has been operating over various storerooms, filing cabinets and volunteers’ homes. During that time there has been a growing interest from around the world from people wanting to find out about ancestors and the wider heritage of West Wight. This centre will enable them to make the information more accessible to both residents and visitors and be better protected, they will also be able to create an online digital archive.

The group is led by Linda Barnes who said:

“Freshwater and Totland Archive Group are delighted and excited in reaching one of their long-term goals. We have worked for many years with a wonderful selection of archive material, and we have a lot!! To be able to share our archives with the community in a hub that is central and with easy access has surpassed our expectation. It would not have happened if we did not have total support and understanding from Freshwater Parish Council. So, when we are open please come and visit us, we would love to see you.”

Project leader, Councillor Adrian Harris, added “There is a wealth of heritage within As Chairman the West of FPC, I Wight am delighted which that we have we now been able believe to support can be Linda Barnes and her group to be able to brought out for the wider world to see. start a Community Heritage Centre in West Over the next few years and with the Wight, based in the heart of our village. Totland Parish Council News Your Parish Councillors met as a virtual meeting though Microsoft Teams during July which was very successful. We hope to resume meetings in September, however, this will be confirmed closer to this date and at this time we are not sure if this will be in the Parish Office or continue as virtual meetings. Councillors and the Clerk speak daily, and all are interacting with emails and text messages. The Parish Office remains closed; however, the Clerk remains in the office taking calls and picking up emails. If you would like an appointment or if you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact Helen. The Public Toilets at Totland Beach and Colwell are opened and are cleaned daily and checked twice each day. They are also being deep cleaned regularly, however, should the need arise the Parish Council will lock them again. We have installed hand sanitizer at the entrances and urge you to use these. The important message remains BE ALERT and think how your actions may impact on others. The West Wight Sports & Community Centre or at this time the Coronavirus Support Hub are still available to help with anything you may be struggling with, such as shopping. They have many volunteers who can help, please do not hesitate to pick up the phone and ring them on 01983 752168. They can pick up prescriptions and even deliver meals. Car Boot Sales: These have been cancelled for now. Men in Sheds: They are open but please check the availability before attending. 10

They have started a WhatsApp group and all are welcome to join this. They are keeping busy though as they are part of the volunteer service at the West Wight Coronavirus Support Hub. West Wight Arts Association - tickets for 2020/2021 will be available to purchase mid August, however, this will be monitored. Reminder: Afton Marsh Recycling Centre open days and times: At the time of writing this report residents could use the Recycling Centre, however, you need to book a time slot online and cannot just turn up. There are also limits to what you can take to the Centre. CONTACT DETAILS: Parish Clerk – Mrs Helen Gibbs - Telephone 756028 Totland Parish Council, Winchester House, The Broadway, Totland Bay, PO39 0AX. Cloud Bread Like many others I have recently ‘tweaked’ my diet and one of the main things I’ve given up/cut down on is carbs but one thingt I am really missing is bread. On my quest to find an alternative that wasn’t carb loaded I came across ‘cloud bread’, duly named for it’s light fluffy texture. I was promised it will satisfy my cravings without undoing any of the benefits I have already achieved. For those who don’t know, Cloud Bread is high in protein and extremely low in carbs, making it the perfect sandwich bread for those on a low carb, gluten free, or grain free diet. They take a bit of getting used to but are so easy to make and you can freeze them or keep in the fridge for up to 3 days. Here is my simple tried and tested recipe. Ingredients 4oz cream cheese 3 egg yolks 1 teaspoon baking powder 3 egg whites Salt and pepper Method Heat over to 150C/130C fan/gas2 and line 2 large baking sheets with baking paper. In a large bowl whisk the egg whites with the baking powder using an electric whisk, until stiff peaks form. In another bowl whisk together the egg yolks and cream cheese until smooth, pale and frothy. Add salt and pepper. Next, fold the egg whites a spoonful at a time into the yolk mixture. Be as gentle as you can so you don’t knock out too much of the air. Carefully dollop the mixture onto the prepared baking sheets and gently spread into even 4 inch circles. If the mixture is a little runny when you get to the bottom of the bowl don’t use the last few spoonfuls - only use the fluffy mix on top. Makes approximately 6. Bake for 20 minutes or until lightly golden in colour. Allow to cool for a few moments before carefully removing with a palette knife. 14
