Whilst writing this the sun is shining, the temperature is in the early to mid-20’s and it looks like Summer has arrived... but I am also aware that this can change at the drop of a hat and one part of the island may be enjoying the sun and yet another area at the same time can be taking shelter from the rain. s summer finally here???
We are very lucky to be surrounded by some amazing beaches that are just perfect for swimming and are ideal on those hot days when nothing is more refreshing than a dip in the sea, whether it’s just your big toe, up to your knees or are really brave and commits fully to the task in hand. Inside this issue you will find news, information, some great advertisers, the puzzle pages, our ‘dates for your diary’ section and much more. Our aim has always been to reach out to the community to share news and information and if you have community news you want to share, please get in touch with us via any of the means below. I hope you have a great August and get the chance to enjoy the freedom of meeting up with family and friends after such a long break and you get to enjoy our beautiful island which, come rain or shine, is one of the best places to live. Keep safe and I look forward to catching up with you again next month.

News Report from Cllr Peter Spink - Freshwater North & Yarmouth Peter.Spink@iow.gov.uk Dear Residents, A public consultation of The Draft Island Planning Strategy begins at the end of this month. It is not the shortest or most entertaining read, but it will shape our lives for many years to come! There was an unprecedented public response to the previous draft plan and as a result the new plan makes many changes for the better; I believe it is really important that the IoW Council hears and, where it can, acts upon your views. The number of houses that the Island is required to build is set by a Government formula. The current plan seeks to cut the Government figure of 641 to 486 houses per year on the grounds that as an Island that is the maximum we can build. I would like to see a further reduction to 365, which is the average number that has been built per year since 2012. If the numbers are reduced and housing is prioritised for Island residents, we will be able to save more of our beautiful countryside and protect our environment. The shocking conduct of Southern Water, fined £19 million for discharging untreated sewage into the Solent, and falsifying records to conceal its actions is, I believe, a strong argument that our infrastructure will not be able to cope
with the extent of development that the government is demanding; it’s housing policy is out of sync with its environmental protection policies. On a lighter note it is summer and our Island is looking beautiful!

SOS Flat Roofing Trading Standards have a few scams to share with you this month. • First of all a reminder about the Loft insulation phone calls that have been plaguing Island residents. Do not respond to these calls and do not permit a “surveyor” to visit your property. They would, without doubt, find a problem in your loft and then charge you extortionate sums to “fix the problem” • If you are trying to renew important documents online be very careful as there are many copycat websites out there who will charge you to process the application (The DVLA charge will only be for the Driving Licence or Passport etc) it is likely you will also not receive the documents you have applied for. Always use official government websites when carrying out these transactions • Fake Amazon emails are circulating saying that you need to update your account – this is a SCAM do not click on any links

AUGUST 2021
The FYTbus Charity Shop on The Broadway, Totland, has been very busy since it re-opened in April. We have something to suit everyone, if you’d like to come and look around. The shop is open from 10.00 to 16.00 every weekday, and 10.00 to 13.00 on Saturdays. We are continuing to run ROUTE A and ROUTE B buses three times EVERY WEEKDAY MORNING. In addition to this, our AFTERNOON SERVICE has recommenced on ROUTE C, and timetables for all routes can be obtained on our buses, on our website, and by contacting our office on 01983 752917. Standard adult fare is £2.50 but travel is free if you have a concessionary bus pass. If you have a FYTpass your fare is just £1.00 (details of how to apply are obtainable from our office or on our website - www.fytbus.org.uk ). “MEDICAL TRIPS” are available to help you reach appointments in Newport or at Brookside Health Centre, and can be booked on the above phone number or via The Hub at West Wight Sports Centre on 01983 752168. We also now have our wheelchair accessible car available to convey a disabled passenger, and their carer if required, on medical trips to doctors, dentists, opticians or hospital, in their own wheelchair. SATURDAY SHOPPING TRIPS to Newport are available twice per month for anyone who can’t purchase their “essentials” locally. July’s door-to-door shopping trips will be on the 10th and the 24th . The return fare is £6.00 and you can book by calling the office number (01983 752917) or visit the FYTbus website.
Protecting YOU and our volunteers - Many people in West Wight are now vaccinated against the virus, and safety measures have been somewhat relaxed by the government, but we still don't want the people who use or work for our service to be put off by the fear of catching the virus, so we are continuing to keep our vehicles and our premises as clean as possible, and providing handgel for passengers, shop customers and volunteers to use. Whilst the wearing of face masks is no longer compulsory by law, you CAN wear one aboard our buses, or in our shop, if you feel more comfortable by doing so. Please help us to keep you safe!
