Report from Stuart Hutchinson: West Wight Ward. White Acre, Main Road, Wellow, Yarmouth PO41 0TD Tel:760048 email stu.hutch@btinternet.com. One of the many responsibilities of the Isle of Wight Council’s Audit Committee, of which I’m Chairman, is to approve the Council’s purchasing policies. Every year, we spend about £135 million pounds with suppliers and contractors. We review policies at least every three years, more often if necessary, such as a change in the law. Policies for the next three years have just been agreed and again one of the most important is that the Council, whenever it can, spends that money on the Island - helping our economy. Reflecting on that made me think of what we as individuals can do. As we come up to Christmas we all tend to spend a bit more than usual. Last year the average family expenditure on Christmas was nearly £800. That’s what the Centre for Retail Research tells us. It’s a lot more than myself and my wife spend so someone is making up for us skinflints! What it does show though, is that Christmas spending is an important part of business income, and that creates employment. The more of our money spent here on the Island the better. We have about 70,000 households which means that altogether we are spending close on £60M during the Christmas period. Most of the money is spent on presents of one sort and another, but over £200 per household is spent on food and drink. And what a great range of home grown and home made produce we have here. For our size, probably a wider and more varied selection on this small Island than anywhere else in the country. We have several award winning cheeses, made from Island milk, 4

dozens of different real ales from our Island craft breweries, Island wines, and spirits too, with top quality gin and vodka and, I’m told, soon to be whisky as well. Fantastic pork, lamb and beef, local eggs and chicken, and locally reared turkeys too. All the veggies can be local, whether you want sprouts, parsnips, spuds or whatever. For those who stick to salad we grow it here. Isle of Wight tomatoes are the best tasting ever. I visited Wight Salads in the summer to see how they pack in so much flavour. It’s not just the variety, but how they are nurtured, all in an incredibly eco friendly way, with everything recycled and no waste. And most of us are aware of the great garlic grown here, so good it’s even exported to France! If I were to list everything I’d need another page! Almost of our stores here in west wight sell local produce, with a good example being our local co-op in Freshwater which constantly promotes local produce. Well done to them. So when we are all out buying for Christmas (and not just Christmas but all year round), use your local shops. When you can, buy local produce, it’s often no more expensive and it’s miles better. It keeps that pound here on the Island. That’s good for all of us. My best wishes to all readers for a happy and healthy festive season !

FRESHWATER PARISH COUNCIL In some ways it’s been a frustrating couple of months for the Parish and the West Wight. The ill considered and erroneous comments from the Chairman of Ofsted were extremely disappointing but we eventually got an apology and a resignation. Then there was the publicity regarding 1Leisure, the Medina Leisure facility which had received a cash injection of £880k as an IWC ‘invest to save’ policy. This, despite IWC withdrawing the £105k annual support previously given to the West Wight Sports and Community Centre leaving local communities to help maintain this superior facility which plays a more comprehensive role in the well being of our community. On a personal level I was disappointed that the much publicised improvements to Avenue Road were put on hold again until January by Island Roads. This was due to the late but correct decision to prioritise Princes Road. I don’t suppose that any of us were in any doubt that this was long overdue. However, on a positive note, the postponement has given IWC the opportunity to work with Southern Water Services to try to solve the drainage problems experienced in sections of Avenue Road. The short notice given to the residents of Princes Road by Island Roads restricting vehicular access to their properties for the duration of the works, together with the parking restrictions imposed on the residents of the High Street as part of the diversion route, was poor. With this in mind, Freshwater Parish Council 10

negotiated with IWC for Avenue Road Car Park to be free to all users for the period of the works. As a result we have received very positive feedback from residents and local businesses proving this to be a worthy investment and also provide us with some useful usage data. We have yet to receive details of IWC new parking strategy but it is likely that we will be able to develop a proposal for local off street parking for consideration by IWC and our community. This will be available for discussion at our Annual Consultation Event in January. As part of the Just Ask! Project our Information Officer, Melanie Gardiner, joined on 21st November and is based in WWSCC. She will provide an information support service to all our West Wight community and will work alongside Dale Sloan and Adam Tucker. Should you have some concerns and need information or help, the Just Ask! Team are there to assist. Now that FPC is now the proud owner of Freshwater Library, plans are in hand to undertake some internal improvements to the kitchen and toilet facility. It is hoped that work will start in January. Whilst these works will cause some minor disruption, FoFL (Friends of Freshwater Library) together with the IWC Library service will advise on any necessary temporary closures. FPC has over the last year taken over the management (and in some cases ownership) of many assets including Freshwater Library, Moa Place and Gate Lane Public Conveniences and Stroud Recreation Ground.

FRESHWATER PARISH COUNCIL It is fully understood that the maintenance of these assets has a financial commitment but there is also the potential for improvement to a number of these assets so we are currently looking at possible projects designed to extend the facilities offered at Freshwater Library and to provide more facilities at Stroud Recreation Ground and Jubilee Field. The Freshwater Neighbourhood Plan has now been submitted in Draft to IWC for comment. There has been a great deal of effort expended on this document which is designed to assist our local community have a greater influence on future local planning matters. The team lead by Cllrs Anne Bancroft and Clive Fleury and with the massive input from David Lewis, together

Councillor Jan Cave has been a Parish Councillor since 2013 and is very hands on with the Memorial Hall. Jan has taken the lead for the Senior Citizens Christmas Lunch which takes place on Wednesday 7th December at 1pm. Tickets are available from the Parish Office. Christmas Opening Times: The Parish Office will close on Thursday 22nd December 2016 at 12 noon and reopen on Tuesday 3rd January 2017 at 9.00am. Will now be collected on: Normal Normal Tuesday 27th December Wednesday 28th December

Open Spaces: Licenced work has been carried out on Turf Walk and this area will be turfed rather than seeded quickly. The Councillors are hoping this will prevent Badgers from coming up onto the Turf Walk causing damage and they will be checking regularly. Thank you to The Badger Action Group who have been the Councils advisors on this matter. Sadly a large and heavy roll of the mesh weld fencing was taken without permission from Turf Walk during Sunday 6th and Monday 7th November. The Parish Council request this is returned immediately to the Turf Walk in order that all works can be finalised. If anybody has any knowledge of this please make the Clerk aware. West Wight Arts Association - tickets can be purchased or reserved from the Parish Office for monthly concerts held in the Memorial Hall. Unfortunately there has been a lot more excrement left on the footpaths. Apart from the serious health issues this has this is very anti-social. BE RESPONSIBLE pick up after your dog. Spot checks are being held and we urge you to report any witnessed dog fouling in our area. To report incidents of dog fouling please contact 01983 821000. Christmas is fast approaching and once again the Salvation Army in Newport will be holding their Christmas Day Dinner. There will be a free hot meal and pudding available to all their friends in the Community who may be homeless, elderly, anyone on their own and for any families who wish to join them. This event is a mammoth task and organiser, Kay Willett is asking help from us all whether it be in the form of donating food or volunteering. Kay understands that without the help of the Community this event would not be as successful as it has been on previous years. Here is a list of items needed in order for them to help the homeless and those who would usually spend Christmas on their own. If you can help in any way please email Kay on kay. willett@salvationarmy.org.uk or find her on Facebook. Currently the drop off points for donations are the Salvation Army Church in Newport on a Monday Tuesday and Wednesday between 10 and 2. Also the Salvation Army charity shop in Ryde. If you are aware of anyone who would like to join them on Christmas Day or are in need and can’t be there, please let Kay know. Food - carrots, sprouts, stuffing, pigs in blankets, parsnips, roast potatoes, gravy, turkey, peas, Christmas pudding, cream, custard, mince pies, milk, tea, coffee and Christmas cake. Drinks (non alcoholic) - Pop, flavoured water, fruit juice. Gifts - Men’s, ladies and children’s. Entertainment - Can you spare a couple of hours on Christmas Day to bring some entertainment to the guests. Volunteers - Volunteers are needed to assist in the preparation of the vegetables on Christmas Eve. This usually takes a couple of hours with a good team of people. Volunteers are needed on Christmas Day to help get the room ready for the guests’ arrival. People are also needed to serve the guests during the meal and to chat and share fellowship. You may be the only person that has spoken to the elderly folk that come in for a while. Finally, it all needs to be cleared away. Drivers - Many of the guests will needed to be collected from their homes. If you can help collect and return the guests at the end of the day please get in touch. The Salvation Army also delivers food parcels to families over the Christmas period. Could you assist? 18
