Working For The Community. Cllr Gill Kennett

Avenue Road Car Park

The Parish Council continue to try to arrange a meeting with Cllr Ian Ward, Cabinet Member for Transport and Infrastructure to discuss with him the possibility of Freshwater Parish Council taking on the management of this car park. Our ambition is for the Car Park to have two hours free parking. We believe that this would help the public and the traders in Freshwater. However, despite our best efforts and support from both the local County Councillors, we seem to not be able to get a meeting with Cllr Ward. It may be that Freshwater is to far a journey from County Hall or he just does not want to meet with us! However, we will continue to push the issue and keep residents updated on progress. Remembrance Sunday It was really good to see so many people at the Remembrance Service at Yarmouth this year. Over 40 wreaths were laid by local organisations. Freshwater and Totland Archive Group (FaTAG) also put on an exhibition in a local shop about West Wight people who were involved in World War 1. Many of the family names in the displays are still present in local families now. The exhibition was very well supported and we are lucky to have FaTAG doing so much to preserve our local history. Local Area Co-coordinator It may be that some of you aren’t familiar with our Local Area Coordinator, Adam Tucker. Adam is one of 9 LACs across the 4

Island and they are part of the Public Health Service. Adam works closely with people and families in our area, helping them on an individual basis to overcome challenges in their lives and to move forward. This is done on a one to one basis with the person or family. This is a very different approach to support but has proved to be very successful on the Island and has enabled many people to find their own solutions and move forward. The work done here on the Island has been shared across the country. Our LAC is also part of the Our Place team based at West Wight Sports and Community Centre and works closely with them. Having witnessed the difference that this service has made to many people in the West Wight we were, therefore, very dismayed to hear that the Isle of Wight Council were considering removing the LAC service from March 2019. You may have seen articles on this in the local press and the support being put forward to continue the service. Many local people attended the Cabinet Meeting on the 8th November and despite the obvious support from all members of the public present from across the Island the decision was made by the IW Councillors in the Cabinet to remove the service. The reason given was that the Public Health Service on the Island did not have sufficient funding to continue the service. Evidence had been put forward by Southampton Solent University demonstrating that the service saved more money than it cost by keeping people out of statutory services but sadly this was not fully accepted by the cabinet.

Tel 01983 840750 / 522243 Brighstone Library - At the request of the Parish Council Fax: 01983 523575 Chairman, I had a meeting with Cllr Dave Stewart and Cllr Stuart Hutchinson regarding the predicament that the cuts to Library funding has put the Brighstone Library in. Janice Clark DipCFHP, MPSPract

The Island Foot Lady

I feel that volunteers have worked hard to keep the Library going and have a good plan with a loss of half of the funding this year and no funding from next year however what was unexpected was a bill for business rates.

Having trouble reaching your feet? Are your feet giving you pain? • corn removal • ingrowing toe nails • nail cutting thickened nail reduction • cracked heels callus/hard skin reduction • diabetic foot care verrucae & fungal infection treatment A friendly discreet professional service in the relaxed comfort of your own home. Call Janice on 07557 646198 or 01983 295861

This meeting was positive and a way forward would be found for the Library, as it is effectively a new business, the business rate relief scheme should apply in this case. My understanding is that an application has been invited from the Parish Council for business rates relief and all the information I have is that this should be successful and we can look forward to the Library going forward safely and keeping this vital service in the village. With very best wishes to you all,

Steve

It’s that time of year again, The Salvation Army in Newport will be holding their Christmas Day dinner. As always they will be providing a free hot meal and a pudding, to all their friends in the Community who may be homeless, elderly, or anyone who will be on their own and families who wish to join them. Organiser Kay is asking for your help - Please see below a list of the kind of things they need. Last year they served 144 dinners on Christmas Day. Alongside this they also provided 140 families with hampers. Volunteers - They will need volunteers to assist in the preparation of the vegetables on Christmas Eve. This usually takes a couple of hours with a good team of people. They will need people on Christmas Day to help get the room ready for the guests arrival (time to be confirmed). People to help serve guests during the meal and to chat and share fellowship. You may be the only person that has spoken to some of the elderly folk that come in a while. Finally help is needed to clear away. They will also need guests collected from their homes. Could anyone help collect and return guests at the end of the day? Entertainment - They would love to entertain their guests. Food - Carrots, sprouts, stuffing, pigs in blankets, parsnips, roast potatoes, gravy, turkey, peas, Christmas pudding, cream, custard, mince pies, milk, tea, coffee and Christmas cake. Drinks (non alcoholic) Pop, flavoured water, Fruit juice. Gifts - Men’s, ladies and children’s. Hampers - Tins of veg and meat, pasta, non perishables as well as fresh nearer the time. They are also looking for people to help with preparing the hampers the week leading up to Christmas. If you can help in anyway or would like to join them on the day please contact Kay via email at Kay.willett@salvationarmy.org.uk for more information. There are drop off points in Ryde and Newport Salvation Army Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 10-2 , Salvation Army Ryde & Shanklin Charity Shops Mon – Sat 9.30am – 5pm 10

It’s a Way of Life When I first took the step to embrace and learn yoga I thought that I would be throwing myself into the ‘downward facing dog’ and ‘tree’ positions, and working on ways to make me more supple, but as yet I haven’t tried these poses and I have now realised that there is so much more to yoga than I first thought. If I had to compare it to anything I would have to say ‘an onion’ ... there are many layers to it and it is very versatile. This may sound like a cliché but yoga really is about physical and mental wellbeing and for now I am working more on breathing, stretching and meditating. The type of yoga I am learning is called Satyananda and is being taught by Nickie Short and each lesson is based around what I need at that present time which is why these one to one lessons are perfect for me but I am looking forward to getting to the stage when I am ready for some ‘traditional yoga poses’. Her weekly classes include posture, breathing, meditation and chanting and although the structure of the class is similar each week, the content takes you through a journey of progression and self-awareness. Christmas Recycling Tour By Cllr Michael Murwill - Cabinet Member for Waste Management The IWC, in partnership with Amey, are undertaking a ‘Festive Reduce Reuse Recycle Tour’ around the Island during November and December to inform residents of what can be recycled over the Christmas period. Below are the venues during December: pop along and pick up a free recipe card and recycling booklet. They would also like your views on waste and recycling services and an online survey is now open until January 4. It is an opportunity for householders to put forward suggestions for future improvements or ideas on how the Island can recycle more. The council is responsible for the collection, treatment and disposal of household recyclables and waste on the Island — which is delivered through a contract with Amey.

...stationery y leaflets y flyers y posters y display print y multi-part forms y banners y and much more... For more information or a quote, please contact us on 01983 534440 or printdept@gmail.com

The survey can be completed online by going to https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/9Z5GBTY and paper versions are available at County Hall, libraries across the Island and council help centres. Once the closing date for the survey has passed, the information will be reviewed and used to identify possible improvements to the existing services.
