News report from Cllr Steve Hastings. Mobile: 07870127024 E-mail: steve.hastings@iow.gov.uk Twitter - @cllr_hastings Battle for our buses - Following an email from a Brighstone resident that is reliant on our bus service, which is clearly inadequate I have decided to set up another meeting with Southern Vectis. This time though I am not just asking for more buses and them explaining that the number 12 (or 6) is not used enough to make it viable, I want to go to them with some evidence that if they put on more buses and later buses they would be used so to this end we have set up a petition which will come your way at some point or can be found in the Brighstone Surgery, Newsagents and village stores. I can then go to them with signatures of residents who have stated in the petition that they would use the service if it were introduced. The resident has also set up a petition on change.org on Facebook, which is shared publicly. We are also looking for the No12 services to be extended to Yarmouth with a later return service so that residents can use evening facilities and leave the car at home but still be able to get home afterwards, this was something we discussed previously with Southern Vectis and was being considered as a possibility. I am also asking for a later return from Newport as the current last bus from Newport being around 5.30pm is restrictive. With the Blanchards development looking more likely now with a new developer and architect involved there is even more reason to have a better bus service available which I will also use as an argument with Southern Vectis.
At the end of the day Southern Vectis is a commercial company and they will only make a decision to add services if they are used and it is commercially viable for them to do so. This same approach could be taken for other parishes in Central Wight to improve services from Southern Vectis. FYT Bus - Residents might be aware that the FYT bus service through Brighstone was also cut a short while ago and this was due to low usage numbers and the loss of the driver for the route due to illness at the time. As a Trustee of FYT Bus I am holding discussions with them as well in case Southern Vectis still won’t make the changes necessary to provide a good service for us then perhaps with the same commitment to use petition I might be able to persuade them to put the service back on but with better connections to Newport and Yarmouth and regular services for reliability which could cover other Parishes in central Wight. This of course can only happen if Southern Vectis decide not to give us a reasonable service, as there are certain regulations in place to be dealt with. The FYT bus service also relies heavily on volunteer drivers, which does make it difficult to run a reliable service, as drivers are hard to come by especially on a regular basis. West Wight Meeting - There was a meeting of West Wight Town and Parish Councils recently where I was asked to present updates to the Military Road. continued over the page
News report from Cllr Steve Hastings continued I was able to bring to the meeting a Civil Engineer who showed us what action is being taken on the erosion at Brook and how they will install a 26m retaining wall which in this case does need planning permission due to Environmental and ecological issues. The structures engineer informed us that this retaining wall would be longer lasting and more successful than the original plan of a bridge installed, as the wall will be more adaptable and flexible than a bridge. This will keep the erosion at bay and keep the Military Road in use for another 20-25 years.
This will mean initially other Town and Parish Councils can borrow the equipment and decide if a group of them wish to purchase their own equipment or not. Mechanical Treatment Plant - The new Mechanical Treatment Plant at Forest Park has now finished all tests and has passed successfully. We have now received our certificate, which means we can make full use of the facility.
The second phase of the works is to complete the energy from waste part of the site, which is very exiting to get on with especially as now the cables are going in as part of the St. Mary’s junction Also on the agenda at this meeting was improvements. This is a more challenging speeding which is an issue across the section of the project but is still on target West Wight including the Military Road at present for spring/Summer of next especially with motor bikes which really year for completion and hand over. Once need more policing and as Hampshire this plant is up and running we will be Constabulary get their numbers up diverting 90% of our waste from landfill following the review recently and more and supplying heat and electricity to local resources promised to Hampshire and the buildings like the hospital, prison and Isle of Wight hopefully this can be looked others. at. Meanwhile for other roads up to 30mph there is a chance to reintroduce Speed Watch to the area as Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council has voted positively to purchase the required equipment and get volunteers trained up by Hampshire Constabulary, for this we need at least 6 volunteers and the training is free.
With best wishes, Steve

Abuse has Evolved You don’t need a bruise to be abused. You don’t have to hit to hurt. Abuse is no longer just physical! Just because a person doesn’t put their hands on you, that doesn’t mean they aren’t abusive. ABUSE is control, blatant disrespect and hurtful words.
It doesn’t just happen to women. Men can be victims too. Break the Cycle CIC has been running since 2016 and was founded by Maggie Currie after she realised there was a gap in the support needed by people who had suffered domestic abuse. She has worked tirelessly to obtain grant funding and donations to run the FREE Mind the Gap courses which are aimed at anyone who has suffered abuse in any form. Their regular 12 week courses are attended by local men and women and they can learn how to rebuild their It is NOT okay confidence and move forward positively in their lives on their • To be humiliated in public own terms. The sessions help • For you to be forced to do something you do build support networks, learn not agree with new skills and increase • To be told you are ugly or unattractive self-belief. • To be forced to choose between your friends or partner/wife/husband • To be controlled • To be made to feel guilty for somebody else’s anger. It is their issue and not your fault.
These FREE to attend courses have produced amazing results by those attending. They have changed the thinking of some people in such a way as they have made the decision not to commit suicide. Others have discovered they are valuable members of society after continuously being told how worthless they were and some have gone on to start their own businesses, gone back into education or, just as importantly, escaped from their abusive relationship and now live confidently on their own terms.
The next courses begin in January 2020. The women only course begins on Tuesday 7th January at 10am and the men only course begins on Thursday 9th January at 6pm. Both courses are run at The Riverside Centre, The Quay, Newport. For more information or to book your place call 01983 754666 or email hello@breakthecycle. org.uk 9
One Great Island of People, Living in Many Communities Caring and Creative, Inclusive and Dynamic Striving to achieve equality of opportunity in all things and living life to the full
INSPIRATIONAL FUTURES
Our Island is steeped in history, has a workforce and community spirit to be proud of and its location inspires innovation and creativity I Believe that Island people deserve to be listened to and have their issues and concerns strongly represented at the highest levels of Government. By putting Island People First and at the centre of democracy. I will be voting for what best fits the needs of our Island People, in a way that is transparent, inclusive and community focused.
Our Health and Well-Being comes first
above all else and we must support our local NHS, and health workers in finding new ways in addressing the shortfalls of staff and funding. We must invest if we are all to live a good and long life. I will continue to fight for better funding with improved Health and Mental Healthy Services.
I Will Inspire Island Residents, encourage community development, raise peoples spirits and help improve our Island’s Profile. Our people are innovative and creative. I will seek to promote all that is good about our Island. The World We Live In Is The Source Of All That We Are And Hope To Be.
The Isle of Wight and United Kingdom is well placed with its innovation technologies and can make a significant contribution in supporting the reductions of pollutants. There are financial and employment rewards for our businesses in creating environmental innovations. Our Island is in a great position to test new technologies and green innovations. We must take climate change seriously.
ple when peo s en p p ha ly on , Change te, are engaged get involved, voer to demand it. and join togeth I would want to see a small Island visitor tax introduced to fund Cross-Solent Patient Transport and environmental projects. We need to assertively address safety concerns, have more police on the streets and respond quicker to criminal activity. Restorative justice needs to reflect the wishes of victims better. Environmental Health requires improved enforcement powers. Our Cross-Solent ferry operators need a centralised, co-ordinated out of town vehicle check-in. We cannot block Yarmouth, Fishbourne or East Cowes highways. We need to raise education attainment standards across the board, in Schools Higher Education and within existing workforce populations. This requires diversity of learning. We do need a fixed link feasibility study. The outcome of which must be put to our Island people in a referendum. Our people will decide what kind of Island they choose to live on in the future. Our Island is well placed for green innovation and testing technologies. We cannot keep building houses without providing services, jobs or infrastructure.
