Welcome to the December issue. Christmas is just around the corner and we are fast approaching the end of one year and moving steadily into the next. This year has been a year with a difference, which I don’t think any of us saw coming, even Mystic Meg didn’t see this in her crystal ball! It’s been a challenging year for us all and one way or another Covid-19 has had an impact on our lives, but we must remain positive. On a cheerier note and as I have already mentioned Christmas is imminent and I hope it’s going to be a magical time for everyone. If you have children, grandchildren, nephews or nieces you can find information on page 5 for your little ones to send a letter and get a reply from Santa. Inside you will also find our puzzle section which will keep you busy and you can find details on page 6 on how to subscribe to both digital and printed copies of Island Magazines, should you not be able to get out and pick up a copy. We have some great advertisers offering their services and wares and now even more than ever they need your support.

News report from Cllr Steve Hastings. Mobile: 07870127024 E-mail: steve.hastings@iow.gov.uk Twitter - @cllr_hastings Recycling Recycling on the Island is very good and I would like to thank residents for their efforts to achieve the 56% that we have reached so far but I do feel that we could do even better so I have asked that the Council put out some communications to help people better understand what goes where and how to improve our rate of recycling going forward. The collection crews work in what we now refer to as ‘bubbles’, to minimise their contact with other staff, arrival times are staggered at the depot and loaders were encouraged to drive to meet vehicles at the start of each round. All crews have masks, gloves and full PPE available, as well as radar keys for public toilets and additional soap; wipes and hand gel so that they could ensure they were frequently washing hands during this period. Kerbside Household Recycling Collections in lockdown • • • •

Paper and Card up 0.7% Mixed Recycling up 26% Food Waste up 28% Garden Waste up 53%

All Recycling and Composting from the Kerbside – We collected 27 per cent more recycling and composting at the kerbside General Waste – We collected 11.8 per cent more general waste at the kerbside Our Collection Fleet: • Drove 128,498.98 miles in lockdown to maintain a full collection service to all residents 10

Vehicles spent 83,732 hours on the road

Our loaders have walked on average 30,000 steps per day Maintained assisted collections from the back-door of 2190 residents who cannot present their waste at the kerbside. Household Waste recycling Centres Our two Household Waste Recycling Centres have been through a transition over recent months due to COVID-19 and I am pleased to report that most residents are happy with our new booking system which permits an allotted time for entry to the tip without queuing out onto the road and has created more certainty and quicker disposal once on site. The booking system times are steadily increasing, it is important to note that these are booking for arrival time not a time limit for being on site, residents are able to unload in the time it takes them to do so. The number of vehicles allowed through the site since opening has doubled and are targeting increasing the number slowly up to a safe maximum throughout that does not create a queue on the road. The council is opening bookings in 2 to 3 weeks batches to: • •

Ensure everyone has a fair chance to book Ensure slots are not booked speculatively over repeating weeks thus blocking other residents

continued over the page

News report from Cllr Steve Hastings. •

•

Allow for gradual increase in numbers whilst ensuring safety on site and on the road outside Ensure unauthorised commercial waste is not entering the site

A good number of residents have commented positively on the new system particularly that it has removed any queuing times on arrival. Energy from Waste Plant, Forest Road As you might imagine our new Energy from the Waste Plant at Forest Road has been held up due to COVID-19. The plant was due to be finished and working fully by summer 2020 but that of course was before Covid came along to spoil the party. I am pleased to report that thanks to the contract we have in place this plant will be completed and we are now looking towards the spring of 2021 for completion providing there is not much more disruption from Covid. The plant is about two thirds complete and is very impressive when you stand in front of it, the boiler seems the size of a small bungalow. With very Best Wishes to you all for Christmas and the New Year.

Anyone for a Cuppa? The teabag… this little pocket of flavour, always there for us in a crisis and our time of need then dumped in the food waste caddy or compost heap without a second thought… but wait, there is still life after the first brew! Here are some great ways to reuse them: •

Freshwater Parish Council

Working For The Community. Cllr Anne Bamford

Remembrance Sunday: As a parish council we did take the government advice and we had a small, socially distanced ceremony at All Saints Church in Freshwater at 10am. We did feel that even in these strange times it is always important to remember those that fought for our country.

War Memorial: Over the last year we have supported work to improve the clarity of the names of those that lost their lives fighting for their country. As some of you might know, some of the names were on the grass around the memorial and now, I am happy to report, that all the names have been attached on the top steps of the memorial. This work was finished at the beginning of November. Freshwater Parish Boundary: Another misconception that people make about our boundary is the fact that they often do not realise that both the Needles and the Tennyson Monument are actually part of Totland Parish Council and not within our own boundary. The line goes across the first third of Tennyson Down as you go up from Freshwater Bay. Just Ask Mel: The West Wight Help Hub run from the West Wight Sports and Community Centre, would like to remind you about the hot food delivery service run every week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Cost of the meal is £6. Please contact 01983 752168 for more information. 14

West Wight Heritage Centre: I am pleased to report that over 600 people have visited the centre since it opened. Lots of positive comments are being made about the stunning displays that Freshwater and Totland Archive Group are creating for the shop window. The latest is based on the theme of ‘groups’ and there is an interesting photo of the Freshwater Rover Scouts Fire Brigade that was based on Black Hut Green in 1927. Of course, the centre does need your support and please visit when the shop is open again. More volunteers are needed especially to help with the shop. If you have some free time, please contact the group. Christmas: For the past month there has been a great deal of preparation to brighten up the village for December. All lights have been checked and replaced if not working. We hope you enjoy the display. Again, this year we have organised two days of free parking at Avenue Road Car Park in the morning from 21st - 23rd from 8am - 1PM. Please support our village shops again this year. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all from our councillors and staff at Freshwater Parish Council. Anne Bamford
