Dear Readers

Adrian Crilly - Plumber

Welcome to the February issue. Island Magazines is your local community magazine and each issue is packed with news, information, features, dates for your diary, puzzles and much more. It is also an ideal way to find local services offered by local businesses. From gutter clearing, local garages, florist, health & beauty, property maintenance, warehouse discount stores, life coaching, through to electricians - this little magazine has them all. Valentine’s Day is on the 14th February. It’s a time to be romantic and show your loved one just how much they mean to you. Even if you are single you don’t need to miss out, instead treat yourself to something special. Later in the month on Tuesday 28th February it’s pancake day and who doesn’t like a nice stack of pancakes on a cold, wintry day. I know I certainly do!!! If you have any news or events you want to share then please get in contact with me and I will do my best to help. I hope you enjoy this issue and I look forward to catching up with you next month..

Totland Parish Council News The colder weather is here and the Parish Office has FREE guides to keeping warm and well this winter from Age UK which includes a free thermometer. Please come and pick up a copy for yourself or a neighbour. Open Spaces Phase II of the Tree Management Plan will commence shortly this is why you have seen numbers on trees around the parish. Works will include removal of dead trees or making them safe by either crown reduction or limb removal. The brambles on the Recreation Ground have been cut back and added to the management program. Summers Lane Councillors are committed to reducing the speed limit on Summers Lane and Councillor John Howe has met with Island Roads and the Isle of Wight Council regularly to discuss this. The speed reactive sign currently on Weston Road will be moved to Summers Lane and Councillors are expecting this to be dealt with quickly. Councillors are also pushing for this road to be added to the gritting route for the future. Salt socks have been placed on parts of this road, however, this is not a solution and we are working towards the best solution for all. Please watch your speed at all times and drive carefully. Soup Kitchen – Slim and Give The Parish Office has agreed to be a drop off point for the above campaign. This is aimed at getting rid of calorie-rich food and help the homeless. If you have decided to go on a diet and get rid of a few pounds this New Year, why not consider donating your calorie-rich foods to the Pop-Up Soup Kitchen. We can only accept non-perishable goods and cannot take clothes or blankets as they are too bulky. If popular the Parish Council will consider this as an ongoing amenity. Please support if you can. 4

Police Beat Surgery The next surgery will be in the Parish Office on Wednesday 15th February 2017 at 11am. Please come along and meet and speak to your local Police Officers and Police Community Support Officers and let them know your concerns.

Please keep our village tidy The Parish Office has received a number of complaints with regards to dog fouling. Always clean up after your dog – Over 400 dog litter bins are provided on the island, by The Isle of Wight/Island Roads and Parish Councils. If you witness this act please report these people. Failing to be a responsible dog owner could result in a fixed penalty notice of £75.00. Garden Bags; Better quality garden waste bags are now in stock at the parish office at £1.30 each. To pre-book this collection please telephone 823777 and give at least three working days’ notice to help guide the route. If you have any problems with this service please let the Clerk know.

West Wight Arts Association - tickets can be purchased or reserved from the Parish Office for monthly concerts held in the Memorial Hall. CONTACT DETAILS: Parish Clerk – Mrs Helen Gibbs - Telephone 756028 Totland Parish Council, Winchester House, The Broadway, Totland Bay, PO39 0AX. The parish office is open Monday & Tuesday 9am – 12noon and Wednesday & Thursday 9.30am–12.30pm. Email: totlandparishco@googlemail.com or follow the Clerk on Twitter @TotlandClerk

Would you like to join the West Wight Timebank? If you would like to join us, you will be part of an inclusive community group where people and organisations help each other in the community and are rewarded for it. For every hour of time you give helping someone, you will receive one time credit. You can spend your time credits on something you need, donate your time credits to someone else in need or you can save them up until you need them Here’s are what two of our members have to say: ‘Timebanking has been a great gift for us as a new family to the island. I have been able to connect with members of the local community and find out what is happening, while meeting some lovely people and using the skills I have to support the service. We have no family support locally, so when one of the members offered an exchange in babysitting it was fantastic. This gave me and my partner the opportunity to have a much needed evening out together, while the kids were safe and happy. It’s a really useful service that enables communities to help and support one another.’ ‘As a West Wight Time Bank Steering Group member, I greatly enjoy helping out with the Time Bank and providing support in all its quests. The Time Bank allows me to stay connected with the West Wight Community, I enjoy hearing personal testimonies of ways in which the Timebank (TB) supports people and I have witnessed first-hand the social benefits the TB has to offer, through befriending, up-skilling workshops and team gardening projects among many others. The WWTB is for everyone in the local West Wight community and we hope to continue to engage with and reach out to as many residents as we can’.

An Abundance of Cuteness and Tasty Pizza Over the past four years the West Wight Alpacas complex at Wellow has become one of the Island’s leading tourist attractions. Visitors only have to step onto the 24-acre Farm Park site to appreciate there is much more to see than just the fascinating and friendly herd of awardwinning Suri alpacas, with their dreadlock fleeces. There are also more than a dozen Swiss and Italian llamas to marvel at, and trek with, as well as miniature donkeys, pigmy goats, rare-breed poultry, and the newest additions Valais black-nosed sheep. They are described by West Wight Alpacas owners Neil and Michelle Payne as ‘the Wallace and Gromit’ of sheep, and the cuties really have to be seen! The Farm Park is open daily from 10.0am, with alpaca wool and hand-knitted garments, including scarves, hats and gloves, available to buy at the Yarn Barn. But now there is even more to enjoy at West Wight Alpacas with the transformation of the popular cafe into the Llama Tree Pizzeria and Coffee House. This enables customers not only to savour all the culinary delights during the day, but also enjoy artisan pizzas on Friday and Saturday evenings, from 5.30pm until 8.00pm. The recently installed state-of-the-art pizza oven ensures a high quality range of pizzas, all home-made, are served piping hot and without delay by caring staff. Although the Llama Tree is not yet licensed, Neil and Michelle invite diners to bring along their own wine, and a bus stop for the hourly No 7 route is right outside the main gates. The Llama Tree has 30 covers, where diners can enjoy their food in a cosy, comfortable and warm environment.

Och Aye The Moo I hope you like this month’s front cover photo of the Highland cows which was taken by David Trevan. Highland cattle with their long horns and their flowing coats, which gives them protection during cold winters, were originally from the Highlands and West Isles of Scotland and are now a welcome sight across the Island. David Trevan is a very keen amateur photographer who lives on the Undercliff and comes across these beautiful animals on his regular walks around St Lawrence. David has a passion for natural history and particularly wild flowers and before he retired he was a lecturer in Horticulture and Countryside Management at the IOW College and trained at the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew with Alan Titchmarsh. He is a keen member of the IOW Natural History and Archaeological Society and puts many of his wildlife pictures online, in particular iSpot, an Open University website and iRecord, a website that enables people to record their natural history finds.

Giving blood saves lives. The blood you give is a lifeline in an emergency and for people who need long-term treatments. Many people would not be alive today if donors had not generously given their blood. We need over 6,000 blood donations every day to treat patients in need across England. Which is why there’s always a need for people to give blood. Each year we need approximately 200,000 new donors, as some donors can no longer give blood. Most people between the ages of 17-65 are able to give blood. You can book an appointment to attend or register to be a donor online at www.blood. co.uk or by calling their Helpline on 0300 123 23 23.

His customers are always happy with the work he does and below are just a couple of recent reviews he has received. Bought 2 flats: one in need of complete rewiring with new fuse box and down lights, the other (my home) a blank canvas, top to bottom job, 2 floors with loft conversion...down lights, all new sockets, redesigning , new boiler, new alarms, tv/satellite etc... Rich Electrics has done both and a top job too! Very helpful and friendly... Highly recommended! Thank you M.A. Had three jobs to do, one of them was extremely time sensitive. Rich came in and completed them all quickly but also to a high standard. Would highly recommend him! Cheers Rich!! G.B. FRESHWATER PARISH COUNCIL Let me start by wishing you all a Happy New Year.

explain and set out those costs.

I am confident that we will all see the benefits in the coming months, of the hard work that has been going on behind the scenes.

We also set out our proposals for the Precept ie. the element of the Council Tax to be set by FPC.

It is proposed that we seek to come to an arrangement with the Isle of Wight Council to take over the future management of Avenue Road Car Park and elements of Moa Place Car Park in order to help local businesses. IWC are still to decide their Car Parking Strategy so no decision yet but I am hopeful that this will be possible.

We will be able to confirm that figure in February after reviewing the comments from the Event. You will know that FPC has, over the past year, taken on the ownership and responsibility for the Freshwater Library, the public conveniences at Moa Place and Gate Lane, Stroud Recreation Ground and the management of parcels of land across the Parish including Freshwater Bay.

This will be an interesting time as we look forward to May when not only will there be the Isle of Wight Council elections but also the We are also a major investor in WWSCC and chance for you to elect your Freshwater Parish improvements to the Public Realm such as the Council. Avenue Road Scheme in conjunction with IWC and Island Roads. It is important that Freshwater Parish Council remains non political as a body which At last year’s Community Event our community exists as the first tier of local democracy. told us that maintaining these facilities was Freshwater Parish Council consists of fourteen very important but it has also been FPC’s policy Councillors, seven representing Afton and to look to improve these assets and services seven representing Norton. The elections give where possible. everyone the opportunity to express their satisfaction or dissatisfaction, with the work We are looking to invest to improve Freshwater undertaken by the members of FPC. for everyone. Two major key Projects are now underway in Should you feel that you wish to be a the Village. The internal modifications to the Freshwater Parish Councillor, now is the Library including provision of a Disabled WC opportunity for you to put your name forward! and Kitchen and external repairs to the timber Whilst sometimes frustrating it is also very cladding and the long awaited Avenue Road rewarding. Scheme. It is hoped that many of you turned out at our Consultation Event on 25th January where we set out our existing commitments and our short and longer term Project proposals and you were able to express your views. The Consultation Event helps us to understand the concerns and priorities of our community and where these may have a cost, to try to

I am afraid that the nature of these works will cause some disruption but we will endeavour to ensure that the contractors work with businesses and the general public in order that this kept to a minimum. On 21st November we launched our JUST ASK! Project. I am pleased to welcome Melanie

FRESHWATER PARISH COUNCIL Gardiner to our team. Melanie is the new Information Support Officer based in WWSCC.
