As the year advances with a rush into spring we can find our time for ourselves is eaten away by all we need to do, family, work, life. Taking time to help ourselves is often the last thing on our list. However investing a little time to keep ourselves healthy not only benefits us but also those around us and the ripples of our all-round good health go on beyond the influences we see. In this way I have taken great pleasure in seeing how the interest in Yoga has grown. Many people are recognising how Yoga is not just for the body but teaches us a better way to live, giving us more energy, calmness, coping better with stress and positivity as well as physical well-being. My classes are relaxed and easy going promoting all round good health for everyone of all abilities. Yoga classes are held: Monday Morning at Yarmouth Community Hall at 10-11.30am. Monday Evening at Shalfleet Village Hall 5.30- 7.00pm and Wednesday Evening at Shalfleet Village Hall 7.00- 8.30pm. Term courses are £6 a class for 7 classes or drop in for £7. Report from Stuart Hutchinson: West Wight Ward. White Acre, Main Road, Wellow, Yarmouth PO41 0TD Tel:760048 email stu.hutch@btinternet.com. Just before Christmas, Councillors were given an initial briefing on the Local Government financial settlement. It indicated the difficulties we face, and I tried to explain some of them in my last article. We have now worked out the precise figures. They are worse than expected. The Council has to save £17.4 millions to achieve a balanced budget. The reason we are so short arises from a number of pressures. The cost of social care, a statutory service, is rising rapidly. Government grants are falling rapidly. For instance we got £26M in grant last year, but this is being phased out and we shall have none within 4 years.

services that we have always paid for in the past, but may not be able to do so in future, like public toilets and beach cleaning.

We cannot raise less money than it takes to run the Council, by operating some sort of overdraft that allows us to continue to run things until the finances improve. Neither can we refuse to deliver a statutory service because we have run out of money. And we can only raise money from the sort of things I have mentioned above. Within that there are difficulties. There is resistance to further increases in charges and the amounts raised are small. We do not control the amount of business rates. We cannot increase domestic rates by more than What is a balanced budget? It means that the 3.99%. An increase of that amount, by the way, costs a band D taxpayer (band D is the typical 3 money raised, from domestic rates, business rates (of which the Council gets only 50% - the bed semi) just a £1 a week. In the UK, Ireland, Canada and Australia, the day is known as “Pancake Day” as it one-to-one beginners bowl is a common custom to eat pancakes as a turning courses meal. Pancakes are associated with the day Wood turning tuition with preceding Lent because they were a way Andy Fortune RPT to use up rich foods such as eggs, milk, and www.mtwoodturnery.com sugar, before the fasting season of the 40 Tel: 472696 or 07974 240870 days of Lent. The fasting emphasised eating Arreton Barns Craft Village plainer food and refraining from food that would give pleasure: in many cultures, this means no meat, dairy products, or eggs.

Shrove Tuesday was once known as a “half-holiday” in Britain. It started at 11:00am with the ringing of a church bell. On Pancake Day, “pancake races” are held in villages and towns across the United Kingdom. The tradition is said to have originated in 1445 when a housewife from Olney, Buckinghamshire, was so busy making pancakes that she forgot the time until she heard the church bells ringing for the service. She raced out of the house to church while still carrying her frying pan and pancake, tossing it to prevent it from burning. The pancake race remains a relatively common festive tradition in the UK, even today. Participants with frying pans race through the streets tossing pancakes into the air and catching them in the pan while running. The traditional pancake is flavoured with sugar and lemon but over the years this has evolved and the filling/topping varieties are endless and are no longer just thought of as a sweet as many people make pancakes with savoury filling on Shrove Tuesday and other days of the year.

The New Microchipping Law From 6 April 2016 all dogs in England will be legally required to be microchipped and their details registered on one of the authorised databases.

Shockingly the National Dog Warden Association advises that around 40% of dogs it deals with that are already chipped have missing or inaccurate information. People must be encouraged and be reminded to Under the law you are obliged to keep your keep their details up to date to give this law details up to date on the database. There is a FREE dog without a chip. After which a £500 fine for microchipping event on Sunday 14th failing to comply will be issued. February 2016 between 10am and If you sell or otherwise pass the dog on, you as the previous keeper are required to register the new keeper (the wording used is ‘keeper’ rather than ‘owner’ with regard to microchips). Similarly if your dog dies, you must inform the database that holds your pet’s details. Puppies must be chipped at their second set of vaccinations – and around the time they are weaned - at 8 plus weeks. With microchipping, keepers and their dogs will have an official relationship, rather as they did under the old dog licence. Additionally, the modern technology of microchipping will not only help lost dogs be re-united with their families, it will also connect liable human beings to abused animals. Mistreatment of animals will still happen even if dogs are micrcochipped, but now there will be some redress against the perpetrator on behalf of society and – equally importantly - on behalf of the dog.

Of course cats and other animals that are large enough to take the chip can be microchipped too, in case they get lost or stolen, and this is recommended by welfare charities. There will though be no legal obligation to have your cat - or rabbit or guinea pig - microchipped.

FRESHWATER PARISH COUNCIL NEWS by Mike Wheeler Firstly let me wish you all a belated Happy New Year.

We hope that you have shown us your priorities to help us make those judgements.

FRESHWATER PARISH COUNCIL NEWS I hope that we will be able to confirm progress on many of these, next month. Whatever our personal opinions, the IWC does not have resources to continue with its current service level and is looking to partner with local Parish Councils such as ours. Whilst welcoming more input into the local governance of our community this inevitably necessitates an increased level of management at Parish level in order to manage and monitor contracts. This means that our resources are becoming stretched. In order that we are able to understand and prioritise the support for those services and facilities it is important that we continue to hear from you.

More recently The IOW Red Squirrel Trust have opened a shop in Ryde High Street, (opposite the Catholic Church Garden, just up from Iceland) where they sell animal themed products along with items made from wood. IOW driftwood products are very popular and they also sell firewood from a woodland they have leased and another they manage for the conservation of red squirrels. The shop is manned by volunteers and the project desperately needs more volunteers in order for them to open for longer. No experience is necessary and you can choose your times. All that is required are 2 references. If you would like to join the team either pop into the shop for an application form or email redsquirrelshop@hotmail.com for more info. This can easily be done by going to their website www.wightsquirrels.co.uk and filling in the squirrel sighting form. This information is vital in helping to monitor changes in squirrel behaviour and in planning conservation work. You can also become a friend of the Red Squirrel via a small donation of ÂŁ5 or more and you will find details of this on their website The Wight Squirrel Project does a wonderful job in protecting the squirrels and you can find out more information about the project and also The IOW Red Squirrel Trust by visiting their websites www.iowredsquirreltrust.co.uk and www.wightsquirrels.co.uk where you can also download the latest newsletter and learn about these wonderful animals and details of future events including woodlands visits and tips on how to see red squirrels in the wild. I hope you also like the front cover which shows just how adorable and inquisitive the squirrels are and was sent in by Helen Butler.
