Café Bridge Coming Soon The Isle of Wight will soon be playing host to its very first Café Bridge, and organiser Philip Watson is excited to be bringing this event to Yarmouth. The invitation is open to all standards of bridge players and he hopes players from across the Island will support the event and help raise some much needed funds for The Mountbatten Hospice. What is Café Bridge? This daytime event involves playing bridge with pre-dealt hands in Yarmouth’s finest licensed establishments. Walk to the next pub with your partner after each round, guided by a roadbook and map given to you at registration. Soup and sandwiches are provided wherever you land up at lunchtime. Café Bridge started in Holland, and is now widespread in the UK. It combines playing bridge in social surroundings with walking around a pleasant British town – all while raising money for a good cause and giving bridge some needed publicity.

Welcome to the February issue which arrives with a big sigh of relief that we made it through January; the month that goes on and on and on, which wasn’t helped with all the rain and wind that we’ve experienced recently. On a positive note you will notice that the evenings are slowly getting lighter which means that Spring will be with us shortly.

Bereavement is the period of grief and mourning after a death. Grief is as unique as you are, and as individual as a fingerprint. Each person will be affected in his or her own way because everyone is different – even in the same family. Butterflies Bereavement Support is a community-based bereavement charity and was set up 3 years ago to meet the growing demand of supporting the emotional and physical needs of those aged 16 plus who have experienced the loss of a loved one or a friend through death. Butterflies is inclusive, everyone is welcome. They are not a religious organisation or connected to any other charity. They are here for bereaved families and individuals who need care and support following the passing of someone special in their lives. Butterflies Bereavement Support is made up of volunteers who have experienced their own loss, and each of them have received varying levels of training and continue to be trained in all aspects of bereavement. It is the invaluable support of a growing team of dedicated people locally who are giving their own time, skills and talents to be there to listen, counsel and support throughout the year. They offer accessible Counselling Sessions, drop in and chats, evening bereavement support groups, bereavement cafe’s, Suicide Prevention and Support, Dementia and Bereavement Support, Pre-Bereavement Support and activities to alleviate loneliness. Bereaved people, even those who have witnessed the peaceful death of a loved one, often need to tell their story repeatedly, and at that important part of transferring the experience they endured into a memory, instead of reliving it like a parallel reality every time they think about it – they are here to encourage open discussion with all people. Butterflies is transforming the lives of many – and many more will be transformed in the future. Butterflies Bereavement Support are looking for volunteers to become Bereavement Buddies. Their bereavement buddies have the chance to become trained listeners and achieve Level 2 counselling skills and then further development and training opportunities. They also are looking for welcomer’s, team leaders and people who can help with admin and fundraising. If you or indeed you know of someone who would benefit from support call them on 07889009393 or 01983 619503. If you are interested in volunteering email Paul at info@butterfliesbereavement.co.uk or for more information about Butterflies Bereavement Support visit their website www.butterfliesbereavement.com

News report from Cllr Steve Hastings. Mobile: 07870127024 E-mail: steve.hastings@iow.gov.uk Twitter - @cllr_hastings Spring is coming, join the waiting list for the ‘gardening gang’ - The waiting list is open for green garden waste kerbside collection service. Our fortnightly garden waste subscription service is entering its third year – and it’s been so popular that we’re increasing the number of homes that we can visit. Residents who want to join this service in 2020 can put their name on the waiting list now by providing their email and postal address online: https://bit. ly/2QAbOKQ. Subscriptions will open in mid-February to start collections for the April-March 2020/21 subscription year. 7,000 households already subscribe, which is great for avid gardeners and garden maintenance people alike. It’s fantastic that we’re now able to offer 3,000 more spaces. The most positive and regular feedback that I hear is that it is a great time saver, with fewer trips to the tip. Existing subscribers whose contract period is due to end will be contacted directly within the next few weeks regarding their current subscription, with details of how to renew their subscription. I have worked with the Waste Team and I.T. to make sure we have the capability to offer Direct Debit for this service both annually and monthly so that subscriptions can run from year to year seamlessly into the future.
National Statistics From Defra The League tables look at two Key Measures: 1. Percentage of HH Waste sent for reuse, recycling or composting 2. Collected household waste per person (kg) The industry media has published the data in two different ways with • Lets Recycle showing all WCA (district), WDA (county) and UA (unitary) in a single table (345 LAs in total) • The IWC has seen good improvement and has moved up in the ranking from 51st in 2017/18 to 36th in 2018/19. This is 36th out of 345 LA’s
This has been achieved thanks to: • A strong foundation in the technical collection service delivery • The restricted 140 litre black bins • The introduction of measures at HWRCs to prevent trade waste abuse (permits, trailer restrictions, introduction of a commercial lane) • Strong communication campaigns and clear information for residents on what can be recycled • Comms campaigns to remind businesses Waste and Recycling Survey 2020 - The of their Duty of Care Waste and Recycling Satisfaction Survey is • On going waste and recycling education now open and will run until 14th February from the Environment Officers Team so I would urge residents to go to the and Amey in the community council website and fill in the survey or • Behaviour change and buy in from our collect a hard copy from County Hall. This community is an important survey that gives us your thoughts on what we are doing right and what we can do to improve in Waste Resource Magazine has separated the WCA’s (Districts) into a separate table from Services. I thank you in advance for your the WDA (county) and UA (unitary)(156 participation. LA’s in total). This is to reflect that it is the

The environmental agenda is developing nationally with new government legislation moving through parliament and pressure on Local Authorities to contribute towards UK carbon budgets set out in the UK Climate Change Act. This Environment and Climate Corporate Strategy will set out the activities that the council can corporately undertake in the fulfillment of its duties and undertakings to reduce the Isle of Wight Council’s carbon footprint and which activities we can facilitate and encourage outside of the council’s direct control. The activities set out in this plan will support the following medium-term and long-term outcomes of the corporate strategy. 11
Freshwater Parish Council
Working For The Community. Cllr Anne Bamford
125th Anniversary of Freshwater Parish Council - Tuesday 31st December 2019 marked 125 years since the first formal Freshwater Parish Council meeting. To commemorate this important historical milestone we are hoping to organise an event to celebrate this. The first thing that has been agreed is to add a footnote to our parish headed paper and compliment slips. As a parish council we are very proud of our historical roots.
The Cabinet press release did state that the Freshwater site is also due to receive a multi-million pound investment from the Department of Education. This would see up to 90 percent of the existing structure demolished and rebuilt with the original historical front of the school remodelled and fully refurbished.
Freshwater Library - Over the next few months the wooden exterior of the building is going to be painted and any Old Ambulance Station - A new Building rotten cladding will be replaced. Working Group has been formed to manage the maintenance of the Parish’s FYTbus - At our parish meeting in assets. Over the next few months the January Cllr Harris gave us an update group are looking at the repairs and about passenger numbers over the past maintenance needed to improve this year and this document really highlighted building. how many local people both use and are reliant on these bus routes. They are now in their 9th year of operation. If you have not already seen it I would recommend you reading their latest Newsletter which gives an interesting account of how it is run and the complete reliance on All Saints School - On the 9th January volunteers. A great local success story the Isle of Wight Council Cabinet Meeting that we are happy to continue to support. approved the closure of All Saints’ Primary School subject to the governing Other Local Events - Our Place is body of Yarmouth Primary School taking relaunching its Family Sessions from a decision to relocate their school to Thursday 6th February – sessions will the All Saints’ site for the academic year provide a themed activity each week, 2021/22. preceded by tea and toast. POA learning Parish Facilities Officer - Shaun has been busy supporting the tree planting for the community orchard on The Stroud.
At an extraordinary meeting of the Governing Body of Yarmouth CE Primary School on the 13th January a unanimous decision was made to move their school to Freshwater in September 2021. This decision is conditional upon the investment in a new building being confirmed at the Freshwater site.
and Citizens Advice will be attending. Next Meet and Eat will be 7th February 12 – 2pm and the pop up Eco Refill Scheme will be attending – a chance to save plastic and refill your washing liquids;/ shampoos etc at competitive prices.

Remember to book early if you would like to travel on one or more of our trips, by phoning our office on 01983 752917. If a minimum number of bookings is not achieved for an excursion, we might have to cancel it (as you will appreciate, we have to cover our costs), but we will always let you know. Excursions will be confirmed (or cancelled) by phone, one day before departure. Please note that bus passes are not accepted on our excursions. FEBRUARY EXCURSIONS

We’re always happy to recruit new volunteers to FYTbus. If you are interested in joining us to help the community, give us a call. You can volunteer to drive or to assist passengers on the buses, or you can work in the charity shop, help out at the garage or the office, or give us a hand with fundraising, advertising, delivering timetables, etc.
Why not visit our Charity shop on Totland Broadway ? Every weekday our Routes B & C pass the door, and we have a variety of stock to suit everyone. . Wight Community Access – FYTbus, Winchester House, The Broadway, Totland Bay. PO39 0AX Tel: 01983 752917
