News Report from Councillor George Cameron Email:- george.cameron@iow.gov.uk | Mobile 07701011481 This month has been very busy and I can report that the pavement improvement at Bound Road and Goldings Way is nearly completed and it is a job well done by Island Roads. I am also very pleased with the new Avenue Road and now it is completed it is evident how bad it was before, again I think Island Roads has done a wonderful job and Councillor Wheeler also deserves a big thank you as his input, patience and expertise was vital to this project. Also another big thank you to Freshwater Parish Council for the lovely Christmas tree in Moa Place, it was mentioned to me many times and very much appreciated by our community. It was a big turnout for our local FYT Bus on the 7th December for their 6th anniversary celebration. I think this group of volunteers are fantastic and the whole group deserve much recognition along with the management team because this is the only real voluntary community bus service operating on the island, using their own buses and everything that makes them operate so successful is done on a voluntary basis. At the moment I am working on the Westhill area where there are quite a few road and pavement problems to deal with and one of the main issues is the area between the bridge and Linstone Drive where the road floods easily and could potentially be dangerous in the winter.

Freshwater neighbourhood plan will be discussed at cabinet on the 11th January meeting to agree to proceed to a referendum; this is helpful news for the Parish. School term dates is in consultation at the moment and the final decision will be considered by cabinet on the 8th March meeting, I ask everyone to take part in this important consultation. The Boundary Commission review is also in consultation as advertised and the options will be discussed at the full council meeting on the 21st March, this is to address the balance between electoral wards and to even the amount of residents for each ward, for example Freshwater North is 19% lower than the average ward. I have been working with Councillor Medland to have control of the land at Freshwater Bay transferred to Freshwater Parish Council. I feel that the Bay can do with livening up without commercialising it and the aim is to get FILB and the dinghy owners to use this space in harmony as well as FBRA input we can have something to be proud of. We always see photos of Freshwater Bay when it is rough and stormy weather, with the recent extraordinary full moon it was the opposite and unusually calm and a very low tide. All the best, George

Songs From My Heart by Sara Kouvaritakis

Sara Kouvaritakis was born on the Isle of Wight, and during her childhood she and her siblings enjoyed a lot of freedom. They spent many happy days playing on the beach, swimming in the sea or fishing from a little boat. In this way the sea became a part of her identity, and the movements of the waves and shifting sand have had a profound effect on her work as a musician, painter and poet. Sara studied the clarinet at the Birmingham School of Music, and she has had a lifetime affair with painting. She now lives back on the Isle of Wight.

Vackies in Trouble By John Lea

In the seaside town of Ilfracombe, many of the homes have taken in evacuee children, known locally as Vackies. They have come from the cities to escape the Blitz, but Ilfracombe too is not without its dangers. On the hill above the harbour stands the old chapel, boarded up and in ruins. It used to serve as a lighthouse, but now it is wartime and the lantern no longer burns. The path to the chapel is treacherous and overgrown. lt is definitely out of bounds, but John Lea and Murray Pierce, two of the Vackies, decide to explore...

Report from Cllr Stuart Hutchinson: White Acre, Main Road, Wellow, Yarmouth PO41 0TD Tel:760048 email stu.hutch@btinternet.com. Welcome to the New Year! We all hope that it will be successful and prosperous. Whilst there are the larger issues of Brexit - for which two out of every three residents of the Island voted - and the uncertainty that causes until the relationship between the UK and the European Community is resolved, there are some positive signs for our Island community. The drop in the pound means that we are more competitive, and for our tourist economy, which is about 40% of the Island’s GVA (which stands for Gross Value Added and is a measure of the value of our goods and services) that’s good news. Foreign tourists will find it cheaper both to get here and to stay and hopefully will spend a bit more whilst they are here. As for domestic visitors, well if it costs more abroad, then we hope that will encourage folks to visit here, especially for short breaks which are growing in popularity. Last year tourism did really well in the first half of the year, driven partly by the spectacularly warm weather until about the end of June, but then fell away later in the year. We have a really great mix of activities to attract people, but what we could do with is a major destination draw which is year round. But it’s not just tourism upon which we depend, there are really great success stories from companies which are internationally recognised for their excellence and the Council has to help them to thrive and grow. Many have a relatively low public profile here, but in their industries are world class. I have, just as one example in my own ward, a company called in-flight peripherals that makes product for 8

just about every plane in the sky. And the Island has many companies like that. We punch above our weight in many hi-tech areas. The recent announcement of a £35M investment in further improved broadband at up to a gigabyte to business and homes will help to support their continued success. I usually include in my articles news about what the Council is doing in various areas, but sometimes interesting news is thin on the ground. Because the period up to Christmas and into the first week of the New Year is part holiday and focused on other things, there’s not always something that you would be interested to read. A bit like the TV news media that have to fill a half hour slot come what may, and everything is quiet until another silly tweet from Donald Trump appears and they seize upon it gratefully! But what I will do is to take the opportunity to remind people that it’s not just the Council providing services, there is a huge number of unrewarded volunteers in every aspect of Island life, running charities, raising funds, keeping our local Churches and Community Halls going, looking after those that need help, manning libraries, organising and driving community buses; the list is endless. Without their effort and dedication our society would not function anywhere near as well as it does. In my job at the Council I see that day in and day out. So especially to all those helpers, my personal thanks for all your hard work and truly a Happy New Year !

Take a trip down Memory Lane with Age UK Isle of Wight For many of us, the New Year is a time to look back, reflect on the year that has just passed, reminisce on the highs and the lows of the past 12 months, and to look to the future. However, for some, this can present more of a challenge, in particular, those with memory loss or dementia. Dementia is a progressive disorder affecting how the brain works, particularly the ability to remember, think and reason. Symptoms can include • Memory loss • Struggling to follow • ‘Fuzzy’ thoughts conversations • Disorientation • Mood / personality changes Being forgetful doesn’t necessarily point to dementia. As we get older, many of us experience the above symptoms, the causes of which can include stress, thyroid problems or vitamin deficiencies. If problems like these start to affect your daily life, or someone that you care about, make an appointment to discuss them with a GP. Age UK Isle of Wight have been supporting local, older people on the island since 1973; they run weekly Community Memory Groups around the island, with the aim of bringing together and supporting those with memory loss or dementia. Groups run at: • Brading (Wednesdays) • Freshwater (Thursdays)

• Lake (Tuesdays) • Newport (Mondays)

• Cowes (Mondays) • Ryde (Thursdays)

Groups are welcoming and friendly, and offer cognitive stimulation through a range of reminiscence and social activities, discussions and games, and, importantly, they also provide respite for a carer or loved one. What Community Memory Group members say about their groups – “Very stimulating, the groups really make us think” “A nice, friendly group, plus we get tea and biscuits!” “We all get on well and learn new things, the activities really help you try to remember, and some things really do stick” Age UK Isle of Wight’s Community Memory Groups run between 10am- 3pm, with half day options available. Costs are: full day £25.50 / half day £14.00. Lunch can be provided for £5, or members are welcome to take their own packed lunch. To learn more about Age UK Isle of Wight’s Community Memory Groups, contact Age UK Isle of Wight via the following methods: Tel: 01983 525282 | E: activity.groups@ageukiw.org.uk | W: www.ageuk.org.uk/isleofwight

Totland Parish Council News Happy New Year to you all and we hope you had a wonderful Christmas and New Year. 2017 was a very busy year full of new projects and Councillors want to continue with this for 2018. The Parish Council worked with the 1st Freshwater/Totland Scout Group introducing Car Boot sales on Colwell Common between April and October. The Scouts want to continue with this event and will be holding a Car Boot on the 4th Saturday of the month from April. The Parish Council have agreed to continue on the 2nd Saturday of the month from April and will be working with West Wight Nursery. We reintroduced an Art & Craft event on Colwell Common and this will be built on for 2018. We have pencilled Saturday 11th August 2018 between 10am and 3pm. Further details will follow during the next couple of months. The Community Mosaic project has been running for a few months and this is open to all Totland residents. The group meet in the Parish Office either on a Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon and continue with this project weekly. If you are interested please come along on either day at 2pm. No experience is necessary, just enthusiasm. At the time of writing this update we had arranged for the completed panels to be installed during December, this will rely heavily on weather at the time. The Christmas Market & Lantern Parade held on Friday 1st December was also very successful and attended by many people who all enjoyed the day. Thank you all for supporting this event and to all the volunteers who helped on the day. The 14

Christmas tree and lights were new to Colwell Common and feedback has been good with Totland residents wanting this to continue each year along with the Market and Lantern Parade. The Parish Council will be sitting down to agree the Budget during this month and will continue to support the West Wight Sports & Community Centre along with keeping the public toilets open all year round. Colwell Common cutting plan has been agreed at the December meeting and this will commence in April. During 2017 we also worked with Age UK IOW and the Men in Sheds project in Totland commenced this will continue during 2018 but needs to be supported by local people. The Totland Shed men have been working hard at Sunken Secrets at Fort Victoria and once this project is completed they will resume meeting every Thursday 2pm -4pm on Turf Walk, all are welcome for a cup of tea. Other Parish Office Services The Parish Office continues to offer a photocopying and laminating service and the Computer Suite is available for all Totland residents to use.
