And that’s it. 2019 - done. Welcome to the January issue and Happy New Year to you all. I hope you all had a good Christmas and you managed to grab a little time to relax with family and friends. It’s not just a new year to celebrate but also a new decade. It’s been an amazing year for Island Magazines, we are continuing to grow and reach more islanders every month. I enjoy hearing the positive feedback from readers, advertisers and contributors. I am very lucky in that I can say, I do love my job and enjoy every minute of putting each issue together Although January tends to be a little quieter our ‘Dates for your Diary’ section still has plenty to offer including regular community events. Take a look at pages 8 and 9 to find out what’s on. I hope you all have a great January and remember to keep warm and well as I’m sure there is cold weather on the way. I look forward to catching up with you again next month.

Keep Warm and Keep Well This Winter The next couple of months the weather is likely to turn cold and this is the time to look after yourself, your family, elderly neighbours and friends. The cold weather can make some health problems worse and even lead to serious complications especially in those 65 or older, or anyone who has a long-term health condition. One of the biggest problems for many, especially those living on their own, is not staying warm enough in their homes. When temperatures fall below 8C, older adults can have an increased risk of heart attack, stroke, flu, pneumonia, and in serious cases of low temperatures – hypothermia. Older adults can quickly lose body heat and aren’t always aware of their temperature, making it easy for them to become too cold, too quickly. Body temperature below 35C (normal temperature is 37C) can cause hypothermia. Hypothermia is particularly dangerous for those living alone as there’s not someone around to notice the signs. Later signs of hypothermia: Early signs of hypothermia: • Slow or jerky movements including • Cold hands and feet trouble walking and clumsiness • Puffy or swollen face • Slow heartbeat • Pale skin • Slow, shallow breathing • Slow or slurred speech • Loss of consciousness • Lethargic • Anger or confusion If you notice signs of hypothermia, call 999 and seek immediate medical attention. Check on older neighbours and relatives, and those with heart or breathing (respiratory) problems, to make sure they: • are safe and well • are warm enough, especially at night • have stocks of food and medicines so they do not need to go out during very cold weather Here are a few tips to keep you and your family warm and well this winter:• keep your bedroom at 18C all night if you can – and keep the bedroom window closed • use a hot water bottle or electric blanket to keep warm in bed – but do not use both at the same time • have at least 1 hot meal a day – eating regularly helps keep you warm • have hot drinks regularly • draw curtains at dusk and keep doors closed to block out draughts • get your heating system checked regularly by a qualified professional • wrap up warm and wear thick socks indoors.

News report from Cllr Steve Hastings. Mobile: 07870127024 E-mail: steve.hastings@iow.gov.uk Twitter - @cllr_hastings Waste Collections

with so will pass on information that I am given.

If you have a garden waste subscription your real Christmas tree can be collected West Wight Schools as part of your garden collection free of charge. Nobody likes to see a school closure but in the case of West Wight schools we If you don’t currently have a subscription have too many for the number of pupils for garden waste you can have your tree available. collected for a fee of £5. I have been involved in this process all Should you wish to have a subscription the way through as a school in my ward for 2020 and don’t have an existing has been implicated, although with the one then you will need to get onto the recommendation in the paper coming waiting list with some urgency and then to Cabinet in January, Brighstone will you will be contacted from January remain as it is. to authorise your subscription for the coming year and by then the system I have been very impressed with the way should be capable of setting you up Cllr Brading and the Hampshire officers with a Direct Debit so that you won’t have conducted themselves and followed have to remember to re-activate your the process exceedingly well. subscription, as it would roll over to the next year unless you wish to stop the All I have seen is that they have had service by cancelling your Direct Debit. nothing but the best interests of the children in mind at all times and have Rural Break Ins considered their educational, physical and mental wellbeing throughout this As the evenings get darker earlier, I have process and have listened to all points of had a message from Newport Police that view. rural break ins have increased. The recommendation is to close The current warning is for sheds Yarmouth School and build a new school and garages in rural areas so please on the All Saints site to accommodate remember to close and lock yours children from the whole area including especially as the evening time comes and Yarmouth. it gets dark earlier. The plan is sensitive to the needs of the This is a good time to review all security children and parents of West Wight and like locks on windows and outbuildings. ultimately you can’t please everybody on I have regular meetings with the Police to an issue like this but on balance I feel this keep up with issues that they are dealing is the right decision.

News report from Cllr Steve Hastings continued I have now seen more emails in support of the recommendation than I have seen opposing it and I think that is down to the process being followed properly. I think it is significant that the Governors are now in favour of the proposal. We are always hearing that more money is needed for schools and I agree that is the case so I think it would be foolish to turn our backs on an offer of Government money for the building of a brand new school in the West Wight where we already have the perfect site available near to where most children are situated. Therefore I will be supporting the recommendation of Cllr Paul Brading in his report. Strategies signed off I have recently signed off strategies on Procurement, Commercialisation and Environmental and I am pleased to say that each has an action plan to go with it. It is my opinion that a strategy is just words on a page unless you have an action plan to go with it which ensures something happens and we move forward. There are elements of both commercialisation and the environment embedded in our new Procurement Strategy which reflects the work we are doing in our task and finish group set up following our declaration of Climate Emergency at Full Council to reduce our carbon emissions to try to be neutral by 2030.

This work feeds into our public meeting called Environment and Sustainability Forum, which you are welcome to attend. The Forum meets on the third Thursday of the month at 5.30pm at County Hall. Budget Update The Budget is proving challenging this year not just because we have to find savings of some ÂŁ4.5m even after all the savings made previously. We would have liked to be able to share the budget with opposition members by now but due to the recent election, Brexit and no result on the Fair Funding Review, Island Deal or the green paper on Adult Social Care. This is proving difficult because there are so many unknowns and yet we are tasked with setting a legal and balanced budget. All we can hope is that we can move on to get these matters solved.

NEW FYTbus DIAL-A-RIDE SERVICE TO St MARY’S Do you have an appointment at St Mary’s Hospital, or do you want to visit someone who’s an in-patient? FYTbus has started a new Dial-a-Ride service from homes in West Wight direct to St Mary’s Hospital and, on request, on to the Cowes Red Jet terminal for people heading to Southampton. The service will run twice a day on Tuesdays and Thursdays to arrive at St Mary’s at 10.00am and 1400 pm, and its focus will be on those who need to attend appointments either at St Mary’s or at Southampton Hospital, as well as for those who may be visiting in-patients. See local posters and www.FYTbus.org.uk for details. Return fare for this door to door service will be £6.00 per passenger. If regular visits to the hospital are needed, it may be worth requesting appointment dates and times which fit in with these services. Places on the bus can be booked by telephoning the FYTbus office (01983 752917) at least 36 hours in advance (leaving a message if there is no reply) and giving the passenger’s name, location, phone number and date of travel. FYTbus will respond on the morning prior to the travel date requested, confirming the exact time when the passenger will be collected from home. At the present time, FYTbus is not able to accommodate passengers in wheelchairs – if this is needed, or if you need further information, please contact the FYTbus office.

I’m sure you will all agree with me that this month’s front cover is exceptional and this is all thanks to the wonderful and talented Darren Harris who is a wildlife enthusiast with a passion for birds of prey, who sits quietly observing and learning the habits of the vast range of wildlife we have on the Island. Darren has created an amazing portfolio of pictures which are now available to buy at Forest View Nursery in Newport. His photos show every tiny feature and detail of the subject and they come to life in front of your eyes which makes it very tempting to reach out and touch them. They make wonderful gifts for family, friends or just for yourself and every household should have a masterpiece like these adorning their walls.

Totland Parish Council News Happy New Year to you all and we hope you had a wonderful Christmas and New Year. 2019 was a very busy year full of projects and Councillors want to continue with this for 2020. During 2019 we worked with the 1st Freshwater/Totland Scout Group and West Wight Nursery for the Car Boot Sales on Colwell Common. We hope this will continue for 2020 and that we have a Car Boot every Saturday morning between April and September, weather dependent and Community support. The Community Mosaic project continues to run, and the first four panels were installed last year at the Totland Beach toilet block. These really look amazing and if you have not already viewed I urge you to go and see them. The remaining four will be installed by April this year. This has been a great project and Councillors thank all the residents who have participated in this project it is something we can all be very proud of. Once the mosaics have been completed we have another project in mind and further details will follow in the next couple of months. The Christmas Market on Friday 29th November was very successful despite the last minute change of venue to the Memorial Hall. We had many people attend throughout the day and thank you to all who came and supported this. 14
