How Could I Resist that Face? Island Magazines is continuing with true tradition and bringing you some great front cover stars and to kick off the start of the New Year I just couldn’t resist this super cute photo which was taken by local Wroxall resident Lianne Vine. Lianne is a full-time mum and when she is not running around after her 4 children, 3 Labradors, a pug, a French bulldog, the cat and finally her 4 guinea pigs she can indulge in her passion of photography. She has lived in Wroxall for 6 years and loves nothing more than being in the countryside, she has previously had her own horses and for the past 2 years she has been training her puppy to become her first ever working dog.

Do you need somebody to walk your dog whilst you are at work? Are you looking for somebody who can feed and watch your cats whilst you are on holiday?

From Hoof to Paw; Pet Care & Nutrition is here to help! • Solo or Companion Dog Walking • Drop In Day & Holiday Care - All Animals • Free Independent Nutritional Advice • WildWash Distributor - Natural Skin & Goat Care for Pets Please call or message today to discuss your requirements.

Welcome to the January issue of Island Magazines. I hope you all had a great Christmas and although you shouldn’t wish your life away, I know I am not alone in saying goodbye 2020 and hello 2021. I know the current Covid problems aren’t going to disappear just because it’s a new year, but I hope that 2021 is kinder to us and we can hopefully see some light at the end of the tunnel, with the possibility that life may just return back to normal...

text or call Island Magazines on 07880 587 931 islandmagazines@gmail.com www.islandmagazines.co.uk facebook.com/islandmagazines twitter.com/islandmagazines

This month’s issue is packed with news and information and we have some great advertisers offering a variety of services, and they will all be pleased to hear from you. Do you like this month’s front cover? When I first saw this photo, I just knew that this was going to be our front cover star. I mean how often can you get up this close to highland cattle. Find out more on page 2. The puzzle section on pages 14 and 15 will keep you busy and keep your brain active. I find January is usually one of the worst months of the years and seems to last for about 60+ days. I hope it stays dry so we can at least get out and about for some fresh air. Have you made any new resolutions this year? I haven’t bothered as I know I won’t stick to them. I think the first couple of months of each year are hard enough as it is. I want to wish you all a Happy New Year and I look forward to catching up with you next month.

Freshwater Parish Council

Working For The Community. Cllr Anne Bamford

Public Consultation

As a parish January is always our busy month and we try to make sure that we can consult with as many residents as possible in Freshwater about our Draft Budget that we have worked on during December. This year, with restrictions, it is going to be difficult, but we are still going to try to make residents in our village aware of both what we spend on the different areas in Freshwater and the plans we have for development of the facilities we already run. As a parish we feel strongly about community engagement and hearing your views about things you would like us to improve or concentrate on. We are only at the draft stage at the moment and therefore January is the month for you to get in contact with us about your thoughts on things either general or specific about the village. It is also nice if you are actually happy about the things we have spent money on last year. Usually, we have a public consultation inside The Memorial Hall for a day. This year we would find this difficult and both the clerk’s team and councillors are looking at different ways that people would feel more comfortable with speaking to us especially with social distancing. Our first important task is to make sure that the draft budget is on display at a range of venues around the village as well 4

as on our website and Facebook page. We are also looking at putting a survey together to help us find out what your thoughts are.

When you have looked at the Draft Budget and would like to ask either questions or get more information then you can ring the parish office to make an appointment to either speak to someone on the clerk’s team or a particular councillor responsible for that area of our work that you are interested in knowing more about. We have two large projects for 2021. The demolition and building new toilets at Freshwater Bay. The new design would make sure that there is access for all, as there will be a disabled facility that the toilets, at the moment, do not have. The Skate Park is now really showing its age and we are going out to public consultation for both new ideas and a modern design. Already a wide range of people have enthusiastically contacted us to get involved with working on this project. Pump track has already been put forward on the list for consideration. Exciting times! It is important for our village to develop for the benefit of everyone young and old. Contact: Parish telephone number is 01983 752000 or email Heather Rowell clerk@freshwater-parish.org.uk

Totland Parish Council News Welcome 2021, Happy New Year to you all and we hope you had a wonderful Christmas and New Year with family and/or friends. 2020 was a very strange year for us all with some residents still isolating, please check on your neighbours if you can. Councillors express an enormous thank you for the West Wight Sports & Community Centre who took the role of the West Wight Hub during both lockdowns and helped many residents with collecting prescriptions, shopping, delivering food, a conversation over the phone and much more. West Wight is a very special place and during these low times we have all pulled together to help. There were no Car Boot Sales last year and before committing to them this year we need to ensure all will be safe, therefore, at this time no decision has been made whether these will go ahead or not for 2021. This will be the same for the many events we hold throughout the year and we hope to be in a better position over the next couple of months to make a decision. The Community Mosaic project had almost completed before lockdown last year and we hope to restart this again shortly to complete the final panel. The Broadway parking will be changing shortly offering up to 2 hours free parking outside the Parish Office and opposite the Church Hall. The Ward Councillor and Clerk are still talking with the Isle of Wight Council regarding the ‘PaybyPhone’ parking for The Broadway Car Park but

please remember this car park is free for the first hour, a ticket will need to be obtained for this. Recycling: Afton Marsh Recycling Centre – This is open, and you can now take household rubbish, however, you MUST book a time. You cannot just turn up; you will be sent away. CONTACT DETAILS: Parish Clerk – Mrs Helen Gibbs - Telephone 756028 Totland Parish Council, Winchester House, The Broadway, Totland Bay, PO39 0AX. The parish office opening days and times are: Monday – Thursday 9.30am to 12.30pm. Email: clerk@totlandparishcouncil.org.uk or follow the Clerk on Twitter @TotlandClerk. First of all, the Friends of St Mary’s wish everyone a much better 2021. As 2021 begins, the Friends are getting used to their new retail set up, and they still live-in hope that at some time in the future they might serve drinks somewhere in the hospital and of course get their trolley service running again. In the meantime, they have been very busy serving mainly staff at St Mary’s who have been wonderfully supportive. They were delighted that the shop could remain open during the second lockdown and Lisa, the Manager continues at the helm, supported by her wonderful band of volunteers. The shop continues to provide a much-valued service to hospital staff and to the small number of the visitors to the Trust. They are receiving some lovely Facebook comments stating how much the shop is appreciated and for the service that they provide. Well done and thank you to Lisa and her team for all their work in keeping the shop going so well. Christmas seemed to start very early for the 2020 season and seeing the decorations up and Christmas merchandise about, was a real morale booster for them all. They were able to distribute over 370 gifts to patients who had found themselves in hospital for Christmas Day and for staff who were working hard looking after them. These were delivered just before the big day as they had to be ‘rested’ for 72 hours before being distributed. Moving forward the Friends of St Mary’s hope that in spring 2021 they can again start the process of helping the Trust to buy things which will make life little easier for both patients and staff. If you find yourself at St Mary’s soon please don’t forget to pop into the Friends’ shop - every purchase helps! 10

Your Local Independent Minibus Service

JANUARY 2021

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE

Now that vaccinations are being done throughout the land, let us hope that 2021 will be kinder to all of us than 2020 has been. May it be a year in which health, peace and prosperity return to us and we can start to regain some semblance of our previous “normality”. For now, however, FYTbus will continue running its “Covid” service, as below:FYTbus ROUTE A and ROUTE B buses will be running 3 times EVERY WEEKDAY MORNING, but there is NO AFTERNOON SERVICE on Route C. Timetables are available on our minibuses and published on our website, and can also be obtained by contacting our office on 01983 752917. Standard adult fare is £2.50 but travel is free if you have a concessionary bus pass. If you have a FYTpass your fare is just £1.00 (details of how to apply are obtainable from our office or on our website - www.fytbus.org.uk ). “MEDICAL TRIPS” are available to help you reach appointments in Newport or at Brookside Health Centre, and can be booked on the above phone number or via The Hub at West Wight Sports Centre on 01983 752168. SATURDAY SHOPPING TRIPS to Newport are available twice per month. For information, and to book, please call the office number (01983 752917) or visit the FYTbus website. Our Charity Shop on The Broadway, Totland, is open between 10.00 and 16.00 Monday to Friday, and between 10.00 and 13.00 on Saturdays. Donations of goods for sale are welcomed. Protecting YOU and our volunteers - We don't want the people who use or work for our service to be put off by the fear of catching the virus, so we are doing our best to keep our vehicles and our premises as clean as possible, and providing handgel for passengers, shop customers and volunteers to use. We also limit the spaces where passengers can sit on the minibuses, and ask our customers to wear a mask or facecovering when they are on the bus or in the shop, and to observe the correct social distancing.
