Take the First Step... Painful feet can make life a misery, so take the first step towards pain free feet. You may be in good health and have looked after your feet but if for some reason you can no longer do so, or what you’re doing just doesn’t seem to be working then it’s time to see Janice Clark who is The Island Foot Lady and a fully qualified foot health practitioner.

As people get older some find they can no longer reach their feet, some develop hard skin, corns, cracked heels; all of which can cause discomfort or pain if not treated as does a verruca or an ingrowing toe nail. Janice offers a friendly, professional island wide service and is willing to spend the time needed to achieve the best outcome for all the people she visits. Remember we only get one set of feet in our lifetime so it makes sense to look after them. So if your feet need some help then pick up the phone and call 295861 or 07557 646198 or see main advert. 2

News Report from Councillor George Cameron Email:- george.cameron@iow.gov.uk | Mobile 07701011481 As you may be aware the boundary review is proposing to make several ward changes across the island and we are not excluded from this. The block consisting of Avenue road from Princess Road to the High Street, up to and including Silcombe Lane is proposed to be part of Freshwater North. This was changed to Freshwater South a few years ago but it is reverting back to what it was before.

issues were raised and will be dealt with. Examples are hedges still overhanging on the top of Hooke Hill, restricting wheelchair access on the pavement, the top of Regina Road is being looked at but with the ongoing development it will be difficult to keep up but it will be re-instated and made good when the work on the building site is completed.

I attended the Butterfly ball and I think that the organisers of Gift to Nature are doing a great job of promoting Golden Hill fort as a venue but unfortunately due to civic commitments I could not be there for the Kite Flying competition, but from feedback I have heard it was a great success. I wish them all the best and will support them in the future. I do like Golden Hill Fort and the surrounding park, I still say it is our gem of the West Wight and in particular Freshwater and encourage everyone to use it.

I also had a walkabout with our Housing Officer and some issues were raised at Havelock flats and a couple at Sunset Close, I am in the process of dealing with this.

I attended the launch of the Isle of Wight Day, this is taking place on the 22nd September and the theme this year will be the biggest beach clean operation in the country with the Island community cleaning all 67 miles on the day. This will be co-ordinated with all groups including schools and Parish Councils and AMEY will be assisting with removing all the bags from specified locations. I also attended the launch of All Wight Now at Dimbola Lodge along with other parish councillors and I think this event which is running for three consecutive years will be good for our area and hope it will raise our profile in Freshwater. They definitely have my full support. Please visit Dimbola Lodge or contact them for more information. I had another monthly drive around with our Island Roads Area Supervisor and a few

Another issue I have a lot of complaints about is the newly introduced opening hours at our Afton Recycling centre and I will do my best to support reverting back to what it was. I am very concerned about the safety aspect in the area and it can be difficult to negotiate around the cars that are queuing up for the centre plus the entrance to the Co-op right next to it is not a good idea. Lastly, I am still chasing to find out the cost of clearing the recent fly tipping at Golden Hill Fort. I will not leave this as we do need to know how much taxpayers are paying out for careless and inconsiderate behaviour. Please keep our lovely Freshwater tidy.

What you got there?

The little red on this month’s front cover is a personal favourite of mine and local photographer Zoe Cox was able to get up close and personal with this little lady. Zoe has taken the time and dedication to visit her local nature reserve on an almost daily basis (in fact I wouldn’t be surprised if it was more than once some days!) and her perseverance has paid off as Zoe is now in the position where she can hand feed her and stroke her. You can obviously see from this photo how inquisitive she is and wants to know exactly what Zoe has in her hand.

Zoe is a wildlife fanatic and has thousands of photos of foxes, birds of prey and her favourite of them all, red squirrels. Choosing just one picture for the front cover became a very hard task as she has managed to capture the beauty of them all. This is the second time that one of Zoe’s photos has appeared on the front cover, and last time was the amazing picture of a fox, which once again she gained the trust of, and he was happy to pose for her whilst she took pictures. 5

Totland Parish Council News West Wight Community Parade will take place on Sunday 29th July. They will leave Colwell Common at 2pm and parade around Totland before heading down The Avenue and finishing at Moa Place. The theme is Favourite Childhood Characters, come along whether you want to be in the parade or supporting from the roadside, all are welcome. Plastic Awareness Day was very successful and we would like to thank you all for supporting this. The Parish Council would also like to thank The Waterfront, Pier Café, The Hut, Longbeach, Captains Cabin and The Highdown who supported this event and continue to have a no straw or biodegradable straw policy. Clean Up Totland – The Parish Council are about to start their next campaigns one of which is Poo Watch, this is to encourage residents to report information, anonymously, to the Parish Council. Leaflets will be hand delivered through your door throughout June and July which will give you the opportunity to help us catch these people who do not pick up after their dogs. We are also working on a litter free Totland and further information will follow over the next couple of months. The bin at Colwell Common will be replaced to support this action. Open Spaces – We have almost completed the new path at Stokes Green and new benches will be installed over the coming months. The planting will continue next spring, however, as you would expect the views are fabulous looking over the bay. Weston School field has had work carried out by Andy Butler in preparation for the youth football starting late summer. Finally, Colwell Common orchids are out at the moment and the Isle of Wight Botany group and Archaeological Society carried out some recording during June. Once these findings

have been reported back to the Parish Council we will share this. Police Beat Surgeries – The Parish Council have been able to secure extra surgeries. The dates for July are as follows: Wednesday 11th July 11am – 12noon and Wednesday 25th July 10am – 11am. If you have any concerns about Crime or Anti-Social Behaviour in Totland please drop in and speak to them. CONTACT DETAILS: Parish Clerk – Mrs Helen Gibbs - Telephone 756028 . News report from Cllr Steve Hastings - Central Wight Mobile: 07870127024 E-mail: steve.hastings@iow.gov.uk Fire Service review - There is a very important matter before the council at present which I have been involved with both in Full Council and Scrutiny Committee, which is the Fire Service review, and the Combined Authority. These are two different matters, one that involves the operation day to day and the other which is a decision to join with Hampshire Fire and Rescue along with Portsmouth and Southampton in a Combined Authority or continue as Isle of Wight only with the council as the Authority. This is such an important matter that we decided as the Administration to create the full business case first and then put it to residents in a consultation to find out what residents of the island feel would be best for them and I urge you all to take part in this when it comes out. No decision has been made on this, nor would it until residents have had their say.

Military Road - I recently set up and chaired a meeting at County Hall regarding the potential loss of the Military Road due to erosion. We invited all relevant stakeholders to the meeting and it was very constructive. The idea was to have a plan for eventual loss and how to deal with it and where to redirect, as the National Trust owns the land to either side. The result of this meeting was both National Trust and the Head of Place will have discussions during the summer and bring some ideas and possibilities back to a further meeting in the autumn with the aim of getting something sensible into the new Island Plan.

Isle of Wight Council AGM - I have joined the Scrutiny Committee and Health and Adult Social Care Scrutiny Committee also I am a regular member of the Planning Committee. Isle of Wight Day - I was very pleased to We are of course at year-end and we have had attend the launch of Isle of Wight Day recently our AGM at County Hall in May at which time at the Ryde Pavilion. the Chairman and Vice Chairman were elected This year the main events will be held in Cowes and new roles for Councillors was discussed on Saturday 22nd September and there will be and members elected. lots to do and see. Cllr Lora Peacey-Wilcox was once again elected The main theme for this year is plastic removal as Chairman with Cllr George Cameron as Vice and their mascot, Nipper will be visiting the Chairman for the municipal year ahead. whole Island throughout the year to show how we can all help to remove plastics from During the AGM, I was voted in as the our beaches and streets, Nipper is a rather Chairman of the Policy and Scrutiny committee large crab with large pincers to help with for Regeneration, Housing, Planning and the litter picking and the children will enjoy him Environment which I think will keep me very being around I’m sure, so look out for him this busy as of course this covers a lot of important summer. areas of council business within the strategic plan. It is hoped that on the day all the beaches of the Island will be cleaned and rubbish I have now also been asked to join the Policy collected by the council, this will be a and Scrutiny committee for Children’s Services. difficult one to coordinate so I will be having discussions with the cabinet member to see I look forward to seeing some of you through how it will be handled. the summer at various events.

Why not catch the FYTbus to our Charity shop on Totland Broadway? Our routes B and C pass the door, and it has a wide range of books, toys, games, puzzles, bric-a-brac, CDs, DVDs, clothing, household linen, etc., at affordable prices - something for everyone’s taste! .You will be very welcome to call in and browse.

We’re always happy to recruit new volunteers to FYTbus. If you are interested in joining us to help the community, you can volunteer to drive or to assist passengers on the buses, or you can work in the charity shop, or help out at the garage or at the office; or you can give us a hand with fundraising, advertising, delivering timetables, etc. Give us a call on the number below, or pop into the office to have a chat about it.
