Thank you for picking up a copy of your local community magazine which is filled with news, information, features and much more. There will be no mention of the weather this month, as I really can’t find any suitable words to describe it... I’m simply throwing open the curtains each day and just dealing with whatever season it is! The next couple of months are set to be really exciting as July kicks off carnival season and who doesn’t like a good carnival! There are 18 carnival events happening across the island in July and August with a mixture of children’s, main and illuminated. I think we can safely say there will be something for everyone. On page 18 you will find a handy list of locations, dates and times to cut out and keep so you don’t miss out. On a more serious note we have got together with Andy Hollebon of the Organ Donation Committee, Isle of Wight NHS Trust to bring awareness about the changes happening to organ donation next year and the importance of discussing your wishes with your family. You will find this feature on page 14. I hope you all have a great July and I look forward to catching up with you again soon.

YOU can change YOUR life By Maggie Currie

Do you want to make some changes in your life? Not sure where to start? Work with me, Maggie Currie, Professional Transformational Coach. Learn how to live life like YOU and not how you think other people want you to be. This will bring you more freedom, more fun and less stress. I BELIEVE IN YOU Get in touch today 01983 754 666

I have been to many seminars, courses, retreats, conferences, workshops where it is plainly obvious the people running them are using them to upsell their more expensive products. These can cost thousands of pounds and whilst they give you a glimpse of what they offer, you never actually get Email: hello@maggiecurrie.co.uk to benefit from it unless you pay out that money. There is also a lot of claptrap being sold out there that is solely to make money, and is not focused on YOU. I offer coaching and mentoring - for YOU to make changes in YOUR life, to help you to have more fun, more freedom and less stress. That is it... There is no catch.

If you would like help with your personal development, career development, relationship issues, limiting beliefs or something else, please get in touch via hello@maggiecurrie.co.uk and we can have a chat about how best YOU and I can work together. Sometimes it can seem to be too scary to be coached on your own, so I also offer group coaching. There is a powerful energy when groups get together for growth and transformation, both personally and collectively. I offer face-to-face, phone or skype coaching sessions for a minimum of 3 sessions as I believe building trust with each other takes time. The 3 sessions of coaching include interim email support. Coaching sessions are anything from 30 minutes to 90 minutes depending on how much is covered or how much time is needed.

News Report from Councillor George Cameron Email:- george.cameron@iow.gov.uk | Mobile 07701011481 I will start my report with congratulating C&C carwash in Totland, I attended the opening ceremony on the 29th April and I know that they have done well up to now and I wish them all the best for the future. We need business expansion in the West Wight, especially in Freshwater and Totland. As we are all aware, the West Wight schools consultations has now come to an end and the final outcome will be decided by Councillor Paul Brading, cabinet member for Children, Schools and education. Of course some of the consultation meetings were a bit heated but we should not take this personally as we all care about our children and we will be protective over their educational needs, I do hope for a well balanced outcome. There are a few planning applications approved and the work started on The Meadows in Colwell Road, this is for twenty units, despite concerns raised about the drainage, highways and proximity to neighbouring properties the application was approved. I have reported the fact that the developers are not washing their wheels when entering the highway and leaving mud and debris on the road which is dangerous and does not look good. This is being dealt with by building regulations. I have been on my regular estate visits with our housing officer and all the properties are in good order, we spoke to several residents and I admire the service that South Wight Housing are providing and how swift they address issues that concerns residents. I am especially impressed by the 88

gardens and how residents take ownership of their space and make it look good for everyone to appreciate. My monthly drive with our Highways officer went well, there are always issues when it comes to highways and one in particular is The Causeway Bridge. There are sandbags placed as the railings are not safe, these are listed to be replaced but cars are driving over the sandbags and of course the contents empty out and the bags get blown into the river. We cannot have this so this is being addressed as I write this report. Also a couple of dumped cars are causing problems, one in particular in Jubilee Close. This is being dealt with as soon as the owner is identified, dumped cars are just as bad as fly tipping. I would also like to thank everyone who took part in the Walk the Wight event on the 12th May, this is a major event in the calendar for the Isle of Wight and Earl Mountbatten hospice Charity is much better off after another successful event. This year is the 75th anniversary of D-day and as Chairman of the Isle of Wight Council I attended a few events and they are all very special because of the veterans that attend these events. On Sunday 19th May I attended the 75th D-Day anniversary combined with the 77th anniversary of the Dieppe raid, all organised by the Royal Marine Commando Association in conjunction with the American VS rangers at Shanklin Chine. A tree was planted and wreaths were laid. I also attended the D-Day 75 commemorations at Southsea continued over the page

News Report from Councillor George Cameron continued Common and this was a very emotional day for all who attended, a very special occasion and I was privileged to meet so many veterans. Lastly, I would like to congratulate the West Wight Men in Sheds who opened their newly refurbished workshop in Totland. Derek Sandy officiated the opening and I wish them all the best, anyone who are interested to join them, they are at Totland recreation ground, please pop in and see if you can help them. Anyone who needs to contact me, my phone number is 07701011481.

News report from Cllr Steve Hastings - Central Wight Mobile: 07870127024 E-mail: steve.hastings@iow.gov.uk Twitter - @cllr_hastings I.W. County Council AGM Interval It was a great pleasure to welcome Derek Sandy to County Hall following his success on Britain’s Got Talent where we made him an Official Ambassador for the Isle of Wight. This was much deserved after his fabulous promotion of the Island and what a character he is. It was good to meet him and wish him well for the next round to hopefully go further.

Green Waste Subscriptions The Green Waste Subscription service from Isle of Wight Council is now closed as it has reached capacity with some 7000 subscribers however if you are not a subscriber and would like to be, you can apply online to go onto a waiting list for next year. If you are a subscriber you can add another bin for your household for the rest of this year should you wish to.

12

We are hoping to be able to increase the capacity for next year so it is worth registering your interest for this very popular service. As a subscriber myself I can recommend this service which saves a lot of trips to the Household Waste Recycling Centre therefore saves fuel and reduces carbon emissions for the Island. Other services from Waste Management Assisted collections If you find that you cannot manage the wheeled bin or gull sacks that have been provided for you, or you cannot place your waste and recycling out on the kerbside for collection, you may be eligible for assistance with your waste and recycling collections. Collection Plus You can apply to have your wheeled bins or gullproof sacks collected from an agreed point on your property, such as the side of your house. This service will be available for a fee of ÂŁ60 per year. Textile recycling Households can recycle textiles by placing unwanted textiles in a plastic bag at the kerbside. Please avoid grey, black or green bags, as these would be confused with

The crew cannot take bulky items such as duvets, rugs, pillows, cushions or shoes. Re-use service - Free Collection Many of the things we throw away could be given a new lease of life. You may no longer need an item that is undamaged and in good working order. Our waste contractor Amey will collect undamaged and fully working household items such as furniture or televisions for free through its partnership with Storeroom 2010. Bulky and one-off waste collection - £35 per collection

Amey also provides a bulky waste collections service through its partner Storeroom2010 for items that are not reusable. • Up to four bulky waste items will be collected for a charge of £35. Paint at Lynnbottom If you run a community project on the Island you could get paint for free that has been handed in to the Household Waste and Recycling Centre at Lynnbottom. Often perfectly good paints are handed in that are no longer needed but could be invaluable to a project in the community.

Do your family know whether you want to be an organ donor? Have you ever talked about organ donation with them? If the answer is no, then you’re not alone; sadly, many donation opportunities are lost every year because families don’t know if their loved one wanted to be a donor. From spring 2020, all adults in England will be considered an organ donor when they die unless they had recorded a decision not to donate or are in one of the excluded groups. Even with a change in the law next year we need more people to talk about organ donation to increase the number of transplants that happen. It will be just as important in 2020 to join the Organ Donation Register and discuss your wishes with family and friends as it is now. You can record your decision to opt in or out on the Organ Donor Register. Those excluded will be people under 18, people who have lived in England for less than 12 months or who are not living here voluntarily, and people who lack the capacity to understand the change. Adults covered by the change will still have a choice whether they want to be an organ donor and which organs they would like to donate, and their families will still be involved before organ donation goes ahead. In the UK…… • Around 6,000 people There’s no time like the present to talk about it. Nationally across the UK are waiting for millions of people are on the NHS Organ Donor Register an organ transplant already but only one in every hundred will die in • Three people a day die in circumstances where they could donate, so every donor is need of a transplant due to precious. Here on the Island there are about 60,000 people a shortage of people being on the Organ Donation Register which means there are willing to donate organs around 80,000 people who are not on the register. Last year • Only one in three adults there were 8 organ donors on the Island resulting in 20 has told their partner / family patients receiving a transplant. You could help someone their organ donation decision. waiting for that vital call, by joining the NHS Organ Donor More info www. Register and by telling your family. Register now at organdonation.nhs.uk www.organdonation.nhs.uk. Staff at St. Mary’s Hospital work closely with Specialist Organ Donation Nurses from the national NHS Blood and Transplant organisation to ensure that organ donation proceeds smoothly in a way that meets the wishes of the donor and family. The Island’s Organ Donation Committee want to start a support group for everyone with an interest in organ donation – friends and family of donors, donor recipients and anyone else with a particular interest. This informal group would provide an opportunity to talk about experiences and to participate in awareness raising activities. If you would be interested in being part of the Island’s Organ Donation Support Group then please contact me by e-mailing andyhollebon@nhs.net or on 07544-555839.
