Hello and welcome to the July issue. I’m extremely excited that this issue is back to being in print as the last two months have been online only due to Covid-19 regulations and although this worked well at the time I know many of you missed going out to pick up your copy from local distributors. I haven’t yet reinstated the ‘Dates for your Diary’ section as most events have been cancelled and everything is still very much ‘up in the air’ but to ensure you don’t get bored I have included a double page puzzle section which will keep your brain active!! Following the great response I had last month on how great the new ‘recipe’ section was I thought it was only right that I give you another mouth watering treat, and you will find this on page 4.

I have got together with our hedgehog carers this month and on page 14 you will find a useful and informative article along with some gorgeous pictures. Inside you will find reports from the Parish Councils and Councillor Steve Hastings ensuring residents are kept up to date with news for the area. It is great to see local shops and businesses opening again and shopping will certainly be different to what we are used to, but I think with all that we have gone through the last three month we can adapt to anything. Keep safe everyone and I look forward to catching up with you next month.

Home-Made Ice Cream Summer is here at last... and nothing beats a bowl of ice cream on these sweltering days. Gone are the days of needing specialist equipment and with just two ingredients plus your chosen topping it’s so easy to make yourself. This recipe is a favourite of Sophie Toogood who enjoys making this silky smooth ice cream with daughter Layla. They have been experimenting with flavours and below is the main recipe and some of their favourite suggestions for flavours. Ingredients 1 can of condensed milk 2 cups or 450ml of double cream Method 1) Whip the double cream until stiff peaks form. Be careful not to over whip. 2) Add in the can of condensed milk and continue to whip just until the condensed milk is combined with the cream. 3) Add in any flavorings you wish and stir through the mixture. (see ideas below). You can make any combination you wish! 4) Scoop ice cream into resealable tub. Cover the ice cream mixture in clingfilm to stop ice crystals forming, put on the lid and put into the freezer for 6-8 hours until set. If you wanted to make mint chocolate chip ice cream, add in 2tsp of mint extract, a few drops of green food colouring and a handful of chocolate chips. For chocolate ice cream, add in 2tbsp of cocoa powder (it will look light at first, but it soon darkens up while the ice cream is in the freezer) You can also buy some chocolate sauce and drizzle it through the mixture and on top as an extra burst of flavour.

Daisy, Daisy…. A blanket of daisies reaching as far as the eye can see… and what a beautiful sight it is. Although the photographer of this meadow, James Whillier sees this view many times a day he never gets bored of it and certainly doesn’t take it for granted. He was kind enough to capture it and allow us to share in on this month’s front cover. Daisy Valley as James likes to call it is a very special place, and this wild flower meadow was created by Chris Spence the owner of the farm who over the last 50 years has planted thousands of trees and flowers to ensure the continued survival of our birds and bees.

James lives in Calbourne and is lucky enough to run his own fishing bait and essential tackle shop from here, so this is the view that welcomes him every day. When he is not working in the shop James can often be seen roaming around the farm taking pictures of local wildlife and the inhabitants of this gorgeous meadow. His business is called Baitstation and is open until 8pm and is located on Newbarn Farm in Calbourne. It’s a traditional shop selling bait and tackle for sea and coarse fishing but with a modern outlook as he likes to promote catch and release. Next time you are passing pop into Baitstation, say hello to James and soak up the view. 5

News report from Cllr Steve Hastings. Mobile: 07870127024 E-mail: steve.hastings@iow.gov.uk Twitter - @cllr_hastings Our heroes without capes just keep collecting waste!

The former Countryman update

It’s good to know that some things just keep on happening regardless of the troubles of the world.

Residents of the Brighstone area will be interested to see that the former Countryman public house is finally flattened after such a long time of it sitting in a mess prior to being sold.

Our heroic waste operatives in bright orange just keep turning up at the allotted time each week to remove our general waste, recycling and green garden waste without fail come rain, shine or pandemic! I don’t know about you, but I am very grateful whenever I hear the roar of their engine coming down our lane and all that waste just gets taken away to be dealt with at the new mechanical treatment plant in Forest Road. Soon enough once we get past COVID-19; we should be back on the development of our energy from waste plant which will also put the Island in the running for rewards come the next round in October. Our recycling rates have improved again this year and that of course is down to you also for doing the right thing with your waste at home, so a big thank you is due to all residents of the Island for how you have helped to get us up the recycling league tables to 21st currently and still targeting the number one slot with the help of the new plant. Due to the pandemic of course our subcontractor from Germany who are building the energy plant are back in Germany at present but hopefully they can get back to work soon in Forest Road to complete what will be state of the art site and will send us further up the DEFRA league tables. 8

The Island developer has planning permission for two country style homes to be built on the site and will look good in this position into the future. I have every confidence that the developer will build to a quality that befits the position and with fabulous views out over the sea; I am hopeful that once built, these will sell very quickly and stand proud for many years and look good too.

News report from Cllr Steve Hastings. Target 2030

As a council we recognise that we are limited in our ability to deliver change to the whole area of the Isle of Wight. However, our Strategic Approach as a community leader will be to: •

Aim to, for the corporate functions of the IWC to be net zero carbon emissions by 2030

Aim for the services we deliver as a council to be net zero Carbon by 2030 where possible and commit to • developing an evolving action plan for services and contracts for delivery to become net zero carbon emission when technologically and economically practicable.

Aim to develop alternative energy solutions for the civic buildings and estates on the island through a heat network and direct wire network with an associated Energy Centre.

Aim to decarbonise our civic buildings.

Working with local University’s to develop a commercially viable electricity grid with associated battery storage owned by the council to build resilience and enable growth of a renewables sector.

Enable the Island Community to take actions that will allow residents, businesses and community groups to make changes that contribute to net zero carbon emissions by 2030. This includes developing a supportive community forum to facilitate Islanders to make environmental conscious changes. The community engagement Action Plan will be managed by the members of the Environment and Sustainability forum and be a live document. Engage with Town and Parish councils to enable them to develop new zero emissions plans for 2030 for services delivered by them and residents and businesses in their local areas.

Freshwater Parish Council Working For The Community.

Stroud Community Orchard

In November last year, over 30 willing volunteers turned out to help us plant a Community Orchard on Stroud Recreation Ground.

The orchard is made up of over 20 fruit trees of different varieties including; Apple, Plum, Greengage, Pear, Quince and Medlar. There is also a border of Hazel (Cobnut) bushes which will form a windbreak in time. The Parish Council also planted a number of other fruit trees around the parish, at Pound Green, Queen’s Road and expanding the existing orchard at Granny’s Mead. The idea is that this is free healthy food resource for the community, so we invite all local residents to help themselves when they are passing, once the fruit is ready to be picked. The trees will take two or three years to get properly established, so we will be removing some fruit early in the first couple of seasons so the tree can put more energy into growing. After that, the yield should get greater each year.

left to grow as a meadow to encourage wildflowers and cut once a year at the end of the summer. Daffodil bulbs were also planted around the orchard and gave a beautiful early spring show this year. The community orchard is part of a larger initiative for the Parish Council to manage its public open spaces in a more sustainable manner. We aim to make these areas even more attractive to both people and wildlife, exploring the potential for growing community food, reducing the energy required and involving the community in their management. If you have any ideas which may help to achieve this please let us know!

A recent addition to the orchard and Granny’s Mead has also been the planting of autumn raspberries also free for picking, if you can beat the birds! The community orchard and other areas of Parish land are also to be managed with wildlife in mind. Fruit trees are great for birds, bees and other pollinators. The grass within the orchard area will also be 12

Charity Shop Re-opens

Bespoke trellising & pergolas

Our charity shop on The Broadway in Totland will re-open on Saturday 4th July at 10.00am, selling all the usual items. During the lockdown the shop has been thoroughly cleaned, and measures have been taken to ensure that volunteers and customers will be protected as much as possible from the dreaded virus. Hand gel dispensers are available at the door and on the counter, a contactless payment system has been installed, and posters are displayed encouraging visitors to adhere to the current rules on social distancing and staying safe. Opening times, Monday to Friday, are 10.00am until 4.00pm, and on Saturdays 10.00am until 1.00pm The shop is always willing to accept donated items for sale but please note that we are unable to accept clothing until later in the year – probably September. As anyone who’s visited our shop will know, the available space, given those social distancing rules, will not be able to accommodate more than a couple of customers at a time in the main shop and a couple in the adjacent book section, but we hope that those who do visit us will enjoy the experience. So, do come down and visit us now that we’re opening again. Our volunteers will be pleased to see you and glad to help you find exactly what you are looking for, whether it is bric-a-brac, books (from 20p), games, CDs, clothes, kitchenalia, etc., whether it’s for yourself or a gift for a friend - we have something for everyone! 13

Looking out for Hedgehogs... Some people are lucky enough to have a regular nightly visit from these adorable mammals. The island as a whole has a love for all wildlife and it is good to know that there is a specialist team of hedgehog carers for the island and their work involves offering advice, support and information to the public. They also take in injured or sick hedgehogs to help them recover before releasing them back to the wild. We have got together with Zoe from Save Our Hedgehogs Isle of Wight and Zoe has kindly given some advice below to ensure the ongoing protection of any hoggies we come across. What to do if you have a hedgehog visiting your garden? Always have fresh water available and you can also put out dry cat or dog food. Make sure any netting is secured as they could get tangled up. If you have ponds either cover over or add in a ramp for access in case they fall in. Have a messy patch as they love rummaging in undergrowth. Enjoy them from a far. If you think a hedgehog is in trouble If a hedgehog is seen in the daylight it might be in trouble, as they are nocturnal animals. They might be walking like they are drunk or unsteady – this is a sign of dehydration. A hedgehog walking with purpose might be a new mother moving a nest especially if she has been disturbed. Watch for signs she is moving her nest, she would be carrying nesting and then would transfer the babies. In the autumn the juvenile’s born will likely be too small to hibernate so they will need to come to us for the winter. Be careful when clearing your garden too as we see strimming injury’s, always feel around before gardening. If there is an obvious injury place the hedgehog in a light colour towel, in a high sided box and call myself or Jacquie on 01983 613145 and we will offer the advice you need. Save Our Hedgehogs Isle of Wight often attend events across the island and take hedgehogs along for people to see and their Facebook page has lots of helpful hints and tips and is the place where they provide updates of the hedgehogs they have looked after. www.facebook.com/saveourhedgehogs 14

What we are doing to protect YOU and our volunteers:-

We don't want the people who use and work for our service to be put off by the fear of catching the virus, so our vehicles are cleaned every morning and our minibuses are equipped with handgel and tissues for the passengers and crew to use. In addition, our crews are regularly wiping down all the surfaces that passengers touch (handrails, seat-belt fasteners, headrests, etc.,) at regular intervals during their shifts. In an effort to give some protection to our highly valued volunteers and our cherished passengers, we also limit the spaces where passengers can sit. N.B. From 15th June, all passengers on public transport are required to wear a mask or facecovering, to limit the spread of the virus. FYTbus has single use masks on board for passengers who don’t have one, Washable masks can be obtained from The Hub at West Wight Sports Centre , Tel: 01983 752168.
