elcome to the July issue and thank you for picking up a copy of ‘your local community’ magazine.

At the time of writing we are having some great summer sunshine and it’s nice to see so many people out and about enjoying the island while still keeping social distancing practices in place. The beaches have been busy and some favourite picnic sites around the island have been bustling with families and holiday makers making the most of what the island has to offer. Our ‘Dates for your Diary’ section is being slowly reintroduced as a monthly feature, but the events are very much dependent on government guidelines. You will find this section on page 8. If you have an event happening in August, please feel free to email the details to islandmagazines@gmail.com. Inside this issue you will find the latest news and information for your area, our puzzle section, editorials and adverts from local businesses who all appreciate your support when using their services. I hope you all have a great July and hope the sun keeps shining and I look forward to catching up with you again next month.

News Report from Cllr Peter Spink - Freshwater North & Yarmouth Peter.Spink@iow.gov.uk I am delighted to have been elected as your representative for Freshwater North and Yarmouth. For those of you who do not know me,w may I tell you a little about myself. I was a schoolboy on the Island, having moved here with my parents and sister when I was 13. I loved growing up on the Island and was sorry to leave in order to go to university. I returned to the Island frequently and about 10 years ago settled here with my wife. I have become very concerned by the number of housing developments that are taking place in the West Wight, particularly those on Greenfield sites, and it was this that led to me standing in the election on 6th May. I recognise that homes are needed on the Island; what we need, however, are homes that Islanders can afford, built where possible on Brownfield. Continuing to build houses in large numbers that Islanders cannot afford will destroy our communities, countryside and tourist industry. Unfortunately, it is Westminster that has set an unnecessarily high target of housebuilding for the Island. I will continue to work with the Island’s MP, Bob Seely, the Countryside Charity (CPRE), the West Wight Villages Residents’ Associations, local Parish/ Town Councils and others to persuade the Government to reduce these unrealistic targets. At the time of writing this report there was a public meeting scheduled for 6pm on Tuesday 22nd June at Shalfleet Parish 6

Hall and the owner and developer were due to put forward their scheme to build 70 houses behind the recent development in Burt’s Close, Shalfleet. It is proposed that only the minimum amount required by law will be affordable. I ask you to voice your opinion as to whether this is what Shalfleet and the West Wight needs? There is also a planning application, which if granted, would see Westbay change from a tourist/leisure use to a housing estate. If you do not want this to take place, please find time to make a written objection. I will report further next month. Many of you will know about the disgraceful felling of a large number of trees at Silver Glades Caravan Park in the Cranmore AONB. The Forestry Commission is investigating, with a view to prosecution and the making of a Replanting Order. I am very grateful to Bob Seely for raising this in the House of Commons and for seeking greater protection for trees in AONBs. I have written at some length about housing and the countryside; however, I have also been busy investigating issues that residents have raised. These range from the future use of the Yarmouth School building, the closure of the Doctor’s surgery in Yarmouth, parking problems and speed limit signs in Heathfield Road to name but a few!

Totland Parish Council News The Parish Council met for the first-time face to face during June and after a year of online meetings it was lovely to see all Councillors again. For the next couple of months, we will be meeting in the Church Hall and from September we will need to find another meeting area to ensure we remain social distancing.

do not start setting up as we have a new system that needs to be followed. Car Boot Dates for July – Saturday 3rd West Wight Nursery, 10th Scouts, 17th Men in Sheds, 24th Mountbatten, 31st West Wight Nursery.

We supported Totland Bowling Club with a donation earlier this year and this was to help hold a FREE PSA blood test event with the IW Prostate Cancer Support Group. This event will be held on Saturday 24th July between 9am and 2pm, however, you must book your appointment online at www.iow.mypsatests.org.uk. Bookings are now open and if you need any help, please speak with the Parish Office.

Widdick Chine Buoys are now out, and boat users need to adhere to the rules, this also includes jet skis or any other power vessel. The Totland side of Colwell should be completed by the end of June and in future years both sets of buoys will be out during May. Councillors have worked hard to secure these buoys by working with the Isle of Wight Council and a local marine services contractor to design and install what will be a robust and secure solution that will ensure that the safety at Totland’s beaches is a continuing priority.

We are aware the roundabout at the bottom of The Broadway is in need of some care and we are hoping this will be carried out this month with some new planting. The Colwell Car Boot Sales continue to be well supported and we thank everyone who either sells or buys. We will continue to notify the public on a Thursday if the weather is looking doubtful if the event will go ahead. It is lovely to see people using the facilities in Totland now that we are coming out of lockdown, however, we must all remember this pandemic is not over and to remain safe. We ask you all to continue social distancing and using the hand sanitiser supplied or bring your own, and please adhere to the one-way system. If you are a seller, we do not expect you to arrive before 8.30am. If you arrive early 10

ISLE OF WIGHT CABS

Your Local Independent Minibus Service

JULY 2021

The FYTbus Charity Shop on The Broadway, Totland, has been very busy since it re-opened in April. We have something to suit everyone, if you’d like to come and look around. The shop is open from 10.00 to 16.00 every weekday, and 10.00 to 13.00 on Saturdays. We are continuing to run ROUTE A and ROUTE B buses three times EVERY WEEKDAY MORNING, and are hoping to resume an AFTERNOON SERVICE on Route C, towards the end of July, so keep an eye open for more information. Current timetables are available on our minibuses, published on our website, and can also be obtained by contacting our office on 01983 752917. Standard adult fare is £2.50 but travel is free if you have a concessionary bus pass. If you have a FYTpass your fare is just £1.00 (details of how to apply are obtainable from our office or on our website - www.fytbus.org.uk ). “MEDICAL TRIPS” are available to help you reach appointments in Newport or at Brookside Health Centre, and can be booked on the above phone number or via The Hub at West Wight Sports Centre on 01983 752168. We also now have our wheelchair accessible car available to convey a disabled passenger, and their carer if required, on medical trips to doctors, dentists, opticians or hospital, in their own wheelchair. SATURDAY SHOPPING TRIPS to Newport are available twice per month for anyone who can’t purchase their “essentials” locally. July’s door-to-door shopping trips will be on the 10th and the 24th . The return fare is £6.00 and you can book by calling the office number (01983 752917) or visit the FYTbus website.

Protecting YOU and our volunteers - Many people in West Wight are now vaccinated against the virus, but we still don't want the people who use or work for our service to be put off by the fear of catching it, so we are continuing to keep our vehicles and our premises as clean as possible, and providing handgel for passengers, shop customers and volunteers to use. We try to follow the Government’s guidelines with regard to distancing and, whilst the wearing of face masks will soon not be compulsory, you CAN wear one aboard our buses, or in our shop, if you feel more comfortable by doing so. Please help us to keep you safe! Wight Community Access – FYTbus, Winchester House, The Broadway, Totland Bay. PO39 0AX Tel: 01983 752917 Web: www.fytbus.org.uk Email: info@fytbus.org.uk
