Sharing a home offers a common sense answer to twin challenges facing all communities – finding or keeping a home. BIG Lottery funding has created the opportunity for Islanders to benefit from this simple approach, which has been up and running in other areas for many years. Here, Age UK Isle of Wight is the torchbearer. The charity’s HomeShare project provides a matchmaking service which brings together householders who have spare space and home seekers who are looking for fresh and flexible alternatives to costly rental or purchase. A simple exchange sits at the heart of HomeShare – housing for help. Householders with a spare room and shared facilities open these up for sharers who, in return, provide an agreed amount of assistance every week with routine household tasks (not personal care) and also contribute to living costs. Every home share is different – shaped to the specific needs and expectations of householder and sharer. HomeShare Co-ordinators help them both to negotiate the details of how they will live together, help one another and get along with one another. The Co-ordinators are also responsible for recruiting, thoroughly screening and carefully matching both householders and sharers, for everyone’s peace of mind.
Established schemes, elsewhere in the UK, Europe, and North America where Vermont’s homeshare has been running for 30 years – have proved that home sharing is a good fit for many circumstances. Householders, for instance, may be finding their homes are becoming oversized for their needs – families fly the nest, relationships may have broken down, or support from relatives isn’t an option. Chores may be difficult or simply leaving too little time for enjoyable activities. While downsizing could relieve the pressure, it may also mean departing loved homes and known communities. For home seekers, sharing can provide flexible, short or long-term time-out from rental or purchase. It creates an opportunity to consider options, save for more permanent solutions, wait for social housing to become available (sharing won’t affect ranking on the homefinder register), or even serve out a probationary period for employment before putting down roots. Beyond the obvious practical benefits, home sharing yields many unexpected gains - peace of mind, new friendships, enjoyable company, reduced concerns and the increased happiness that comes from sharing and helping one another out.
To see how it’s already working visit www.homeshareiow.org or catch up with the HomeShare Co-ordinators at various drop-in events over the summer (details on website), or call Age UK IW on 525282.
Welcome to the June issue of Island Magazines and thank you for picking up a copy. Since the last issue we have had some wonderful weather and like many I have been enjoying the great outdoors. The Island looks beautiful bathed in sun and let’s hope these warm days continue. Picnic and barbecue season is officially here and I’ve been contacted about the amount of litter that has been left after such events. Please either take your rubbish home or find a bin of which there are many about. Nothing looks worse than a beauty spot or beach littered with left over food packets, drink cans, bottles and general waste. June is looking to be a busy month for events on the Island and you can plan how to spend your time by going to the ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on pages 10 and 11. If you want to promote your upcoming event please email us the information so we can share it in the next issue. I hope you all enjoy this issue and I look forward to catching up with you again next month. Best wishes
Debbie

News report from Cllr Steve Hastings - Central Wight Mobile: 07870127024 E-mail: steve.hastings@iow.gov.uk Residents will be pleased to know that following a meeting with Southern Water at which I complained about the long standing leak in Warnes Lane, Brighstone, the leak has now been repaired. This repair was carried out within a couple of days of that meeting. Residents might also like to know that there is a service that Southern Water offers via their website which is a free water saving home visit. This can be booked by filling in a form online and asking for a visit and they will arrange an appointment whereby a check is carried out on taps, showerheads, toilet cisterns etc. They are giving away up to £100 worth of water saving devises so it is worth booking an appointment at www. southernwater.co.uk/savewater/homevisit We are now approaching the anniversary of our County elections of 2017 although I only joined the Administration in January in the Central Wight By-election. What a busy year it has been for the Council with schools in the headlines with the successful saving of Sandown Bay Academy, the floating bridge issues that are getting sorted out, setting a lawful budget and making investments that could save services in the future. Therefore it is that time when we have our AGM and a new Chairman is chosen with a Vice Chairman alongside, some new roles will be taken on by Councillors so it is quite an exciting time of the year and thankfully we don’t have elections. I have now set up a meeting to discuss what happens after erosion finally claims the Military Road and by the time you read this the meeting will have taken place. This meeting was with stakeholders such as National Trust, Natural England, Visit Isle
of Wight, AONB and of course Parish Chairs from West Wight and County Council planners, Coastal Engineer and Highways Engineer. The aim of this meeting is to have a sensible discussion around what can be done when the road finally disappears with a view to making a plan and possibly even get something into the Island Plan which is being re written currently. Following my meeting with Southern Vectis regarding bus services a question was asked by the Chairman of Chillerton Parish Council regarding the ability of a driver to stop to collect a passenger when they are not at a bus stop. The General Manager informs me that there is no legislation or ruling that they can only stop at bus stops and it is to the drivers discretion as to whether he stops or not, obviously it would have to be in a safe place to do so. Therefore it would be worth signaling to the driver if you are between stops and he might be able to stop for you or wait for you if you are near to the stop. He also confirmed that the No. 6 would continue to be a double decker for the foreseeable future. The No. 12 might be able to continue to the ferry at Yarmouth and the possibility of later buses from Newport. There has been a lot of talk about the tip and queues associated with it. I should point out to residents in case they are unaware that for garden waste you can order via the council website a home collection every two weeks for the sum of £60 per year (£1.15 per week) which would save the drive to the tip if it was just for green waste which is probably cheaper than the fuel cost of getting there and back. It is often this time of year that a lot of trips to the tip are for garden waste.

Freshwater Parish Council
Working For The Community. Cllr Gill Kennett
Precept Update - In November and December of 2017 the Parish Council had a series of consultations across the Village on how we should spend our precept this year. We also undertook an online survey asking the same questions.
What Freshwater residents told us were the things that we should invest in and also the things they felt we shouldn’t invest as much money in. This feedback was taken into consideration when Freshwater Parish Council set the precept for 2018/19. I would like to feedback to you on three projects that were part of the consultation. • Freshwater Fete – there was very strong support for an annual Village Fete and I am pleased to be able to tell you that this year’s fete will be held on the 16th June 2018 on Jubilee Field. We are really hoping for the same good weather as we had last year. Emma Carter our Assistant Clerk at the Parish Office has been working hard to arrange the fete and I hope that you will all support it. Posters will be going up around the Village very shortly. • Freshwater Cricket Club – again there was strong support for FPC to support our Cricket Club by funding a new pitch on Jubilee Field. This work has now been completed just in time for the new cricket season. You may also have seen that a Fixtures Board has gone up on the fence at Jubilee Field to keep residents updated on matches. • Freshwater Library – the project that many residents had concerns about, and were reluctant to support, was the extension to Freshwater Library to create a Heritage Centre. The concern that residents had was the cost of the matched funding element of the Heritage Lottery Fund bid which could be in the region of £256,000. Many people felt that this was
to big a burden on Freshwater residents and at an Extraordinary Meeting of the Parish Council on the 8th May councilors voted not to submit the bid. This does not mean that any thoughts on the creation of a Heritage Centre have been abandoned, and it was obvious from the consultation we undertook with stakeholders that there was a real desire to create this for Freshwater. The Parish Council will now reconsider a future plan for this and in the meantime we are getting on with ensuring that the fabric of the Library is kept in good condition and we will continue to work with the Library Service and the Friends of Freshwater Library who do such a good job in bringing new events to the library and who also continue to fundraise for the Library. Library Sundisk - I am hoping that by the time you read this a new art fixture will have appeared on the lawn at the Library. Boris Moscoff has donated a sundisk designed and made by him to Freshwater Parish Council and we felt the most appropriate place for it would be within the library grounds. As many of you may know the sundisk was previously sited at Seahorses in Victoria Road, where there was an Art Studio used by many local residents. Unfortunately the future of Seahorses is now less secure and the property is likely to be sold by the owners, The Lantern Trust. A home for the art studio is being sought so that the creativity and inclusivity that was a key part of the studio can continue. Thank you to Ollie - FPC would like to that Ollie from Teddies Place in Avenue Road for agreeing to water the new tree and keep and eye on the planters on the pavement opposite the Social Club, we really appreciate it. Your Local Independent Minibus Service
JUNE 2018
FYTbus timetables for our scheduled routes are available on our buses and on our website (see below). You can also pick one up from our Totland office, Brookside Health and Leisure centres, libraries, pharmacies and shops in Freshwater, Totland and Yarmouth, and The Village Shop, Brighstone, The Crown Inn, Shorwell and The Sun Inn, Hulverstone.
EXCURSIONS -
Our excursions and shopping trips are always on a door to door basis, with the minibus picking you up from and delivering you back to your home. If you would like more information, give us a call, between 09.45 and 12.30 any weekday, or leave a message on our answering machine and we’ll call you back. Remember to book early if you would like to travel on one or more of our trips, by phoning our office on 01983 752917. If a minimum number of bookings is not achieved for an excursion, we might have to cancel it (as you will appreciate, we have to cover our costs), but we will always let you know.
