Another month has flown by and here we are with the June issue. As I write this introduction the sun is shining and I really hope that June is the start of the summer season and we get to enjoy many more sunny days here on the Island. I have already had my first picnic of the year at the beach, it was lovely and sunny one moment and the next it was raining, thankfully not heavy but I was in a difficult conundrum; do I pack up and run to the car as quickly as I could or do I ride it out and get wet. Well, I did the latter but after 20 minutes I gave up! This months front cover is amazing and all thanks to local photographer Nick Edwards. You can read all about Nicks passion on page 7. Keeping on the wildlife theme, on page 13 you can read all about helping to save hedgehogs here on the Island. June is a busy month with events happening across the Island and you will find our ‘Dates for your Diary’ on pages 14 and 15 and don’t forget Father’s Day is on Sunday 16th June. I hope you all have a great month and I look forward to catching up with you soon.

News report from Cllr Steve Hastings - Central Wight Mobile: 07870127024 E-mail: steve.hastings@iow.gov.uk Twitter - @cllr_hastings Visit By Dr Sterling

Speed limit review

It was a great pleasure to welcome Dr Sterling to the Island recently, following on from our visit to Dorset to learn about the cut and collect method for wild verges used in Dorset.

Residents might be interested to know that at the scrutiny committee that I Chaired at County Hall, I asked for the Police and Public Health England to attend for a discussion around speed, especially within villages.

I was pleased to invite Dr Sterling to present his method to the Environmental Forum at County Hall, which was very well received and really helpful to all present. Dr Sterling was very pleased with the progress he saw and was especially excited about the Parish in Shorwell taking the initiative with the adopted verges programme instigated by Lydia Fulleylove and supported by Shorwell Parish Council, Isle of Wight Council and Island Roads. Island Roads have been asked not to cut these verges and volunteers cut them twice a year and rake clear, this reduces fertility which slows grass growth, then allows wild flowers to grow which looks better and is better for wildlife with habitats for Butterflies, Bees etc. This is good news for Dr Sterling as he is now working with Butterfly Conservation and hopes to see the Glanville Flitillary whilst here, as it is prevalent on the Island and Dr Sterling became a tourist on the Island following the Forum.

The outcome of a very passionate discussion was that members have decided to have a review of Speed Limits Island wide and we will set up a task and finish group to bring a report back to the committee with outcomes and recommendations to Cabinet on what changes might be needed to policy. A recent Public Health report showed the accident rate on the Island was in the red and needs to be addressed to bring numbers down to a green outcome. It is not fair to residents or visitors to the Island to leave our roads unsafe due to speed limits not suitable to the road conditions. In my opinion Forest Road should have a reduced speed limit in order to avoid a repeat of the very sad fatal accident there recently, especially at the Whitehouse Road/Betty Haunt Lane cross roads where vehicles can still travel at 60mph across it. I hope this review brings forward some more sensible speed limits to many roads across the Island. We will be looking at quiet lanes also as part Continued over the page

News report from Cllr Steve Hastings continued of this review where some of our very narrow lanes which pedestrians, cyclists and equestrian use could be calmed to make them safer for the users. I will keep residents updated as we go along and any input and thoughts on this subject please send me an email or letter accordingly.

Island Hares Once again Island Magazines is thrilled to be able to feature such an amazing photo on the front cover and if you haven’t already guessed the photographer is of course ‘Hare Whisperer’ Nick Edwards. Nick isn’t just known on the Island for his passion of these mesmerising animals as earlier this year another of his amazing hare photographs made him a finalist in the huge and prestigious Sony World Photography Awards 2019. Out of over 326,000 entries from 196 countries, Nicks Island hares were chosen to be in the final selection, handbook and exhibition! What an achievement and well done Nick. They say that all good things come to those who wait and you will often find Nick waiting patiently at dusk and dawn in various locations across the Island ready to capture the hares in their natural surroundings. He is such a regular visitor to these locations that it almost seems on some occasions that the hares are waiting for him to give him exactly what he wants and this month’s front cover star certainly didn’t disappoint with this pose!! Hares aren’t the only topic of Nick’s amazing photography skills and his website www. wightseen.co.uk is home to his collection of pictures of varied subjects captured here on our beautiful Island. His prints are also available to purchase via Available Light Gallery in St Thomas Square, Newport.

Freshwater Parish Council

Working For The Community. Cllr Gill Kennett

West Wight Schools Review - I am sure that many of you are now aware of the provisional outcomes from the West Wight Schools consultation. Firstly I think there should be a big thank you to everyone who took the time to respond to the consultation. The high response to the consultation plus the turnout of people to all of the meetings really demonstrated how determined we were to retain our local school. The sensible and well thought out proposals that came forward from local people was impressive. Thank you to all of those people who gave up many hours to work through the proposals and composed an excellent response to the IWC. A bit of luck, of course, that the meeting of the IW Cabinet had been scheduled to be held at the West Wight Sports and Community Centre, which gave local people a real opportunity to express their thoughts about the consultation and the original proposal to close All Saints. There is still some way to go yet. The lead proposal is for the closure of All Saints at the end of December 2019 to enable an upgrade of the building. Current pupils at All Saints will transfer to Yarmouth during the works period and then all pupils will transfer from Yarmouth back to a newly refurbished school and be part of a federated school system. There are other proposals but for Freshwater this would enable the Village to have a thriving school within an upgraded building. There will no doubt be a lot of discussion over the next few months. 8

Upgrade of Freshwater Bay Toilets - The Parish Council has formed a working group to establish the best option for the upgrading these toilets, which are in desperate need of a major facelift. The working group will consider all the options – whether to refurbish or rebuild. We have discussed different options that might be appropriate for this fairly major project plus sought advice and guidance from different suppliers. We also need to establish usage of the toilets to decide what kind of facility is needed in the Bay. Currently there are no facilities for people with disabilities or any baby changing units, which we need to consider in the plan. We also need to ensure that our refurbished toilets are ecologically sound so we will be seeking advice on that issue as well. We will keep residents updated on our progress. Uzima in Our Hands - Uzima in Our Hands is an Isle of Wight Charity, based in Freshwater that supports an Orphan Centre in Western Kenya, which provides day care, education, food and medical support for 295 of the poorest and most needy children in the local area. Many of the children have had a difficult start in life some losing one or both parents to AIDS. The link between our village and theirs gets stronger year by year with a team going out each year with supplies and essential items. A concert was held on the 18th May at the Memorial Hall to raise funds for the children and the school and if you look on the website you might just recognise the football kit for the School football team donated by an Island team. continued over the page

Save our Hedgehogs Isle of Wight We are hedgehog carers for the island and our work involves offering advice, support and information to the public and we also take in injured or sick hedgehogs to help them recover before releasing them back to the wild. Hedgehogs are at threat of extinction with numbers declining rapidly so helping everyone be more aware is really important. If you want to encourage hedgehogs into your garden make sure you have small square entry points, always have water available and you can provide dog or cat biscuits too. If you think a hedgehog is in trouble. Place in a light coloured towel in a high sided box and call Jacquie or Zoe on 01983 613145 who will offer the advice you need. Some key things to be aware of. If a Hedgehog is seen in the daylight it might be in trouble, as they are nocturnal animals. They might be a new mother moving a nest especially if she has been disturbed. Watch for signs she is moving her nest. If not, it probably needs checking over. In the autumn the juvenile’s born will likely be too small to hibernate so they will need to come to us for the winter. Be careful when clearing your garden too as we see many strimming injuries, always feel around before gardening. If there is obvious injury or you are just not sure always call us so we will take them in. We visit vets if need be and rehabilitate them often releasing them back to where they were found. We attend events across the island and take hedgehogs along for people to see and our Facebook page has lots of helpful hints and tips and is the place where we provide updates of the hedgehogs we have looked after. 13
