Please Help... Kitten Food and Litter Appeal Five weeks ago in the middle of lockdown staff at the Isle of Wight Cat’s Protection arrived at the centre to find seven kittens without a mother in a cardboard box in the carpark. They were all very underweight and were only around four weeks old. The smallest weighed only 306g. The centre staff took them home and have been hand rearing them. It was an up and down journey as the littlest suffered from dehydration and she very nearly didn’t make it. She needed hourly feeds but she pulled through. Today, they are now all fluffy, bouncy and lively eight week old kittens!! Tearing about the house playing. They are all eating kitten food and are all using their litter trays which is amazing. Of course, this means that the centre are getting through a lot of kitten food and litter. Combined with all the other kittens in foster they are currently dishing out a staggering 68 meals a day to ensure these little fluffballs have full bellies and never feel hungry Please, please help them by donating kitten food and litter or money donations. They have a drop off point outside their main gate which is monitored and for those that can’t get out to the centre they also have an updated amazon wish list if you would like to donate that way: https://www.amazon.co.uk/hz/wishlist/ls/4Q6UKAO2H7GN or donate via justgiving.com/campaign/IsleofWightAdoptionCentre These and other kittens and cats will be up for adoption shortly so don’t forget to check out their website www.isleofwight.cats.org.uk during June. They will be operating a hands free homing process within strict Covid-19 guidelines.

Hello and welcome to the June issue of Island Magazines. We are still in lockdown, but restrictions are lifting gradually, and we are free to spend more time outdoors exercising while enjoying the beach, countryside and parks etc. but we must stick to the 2 metre social distancing rule. Times are hard for many at the moment, especially charities, and on page 2 you will find how you can help the Isle of Wight Cats Protection and their fluffy little guests. There are so many ways in which you can help. To keep your mind active take time out and enjoy our puzzle section on pages 11, 12 and 13 and find the answers to last month’s puzzles. Since being on lockdown I have been baking more than normal and one of my favourite guilty pleasures is ginger biscuits. Forget shop brought as these are so easy to make and they taste amazing - see the recipe on page 10 and please feel free to email me how you got on and some pictures.

Is it safe to come out yet? This month’s front cover star will bring a smile to your face, just like it did to me. I think there are many captions that could fit this photo but I feel that if cows could talk and with nothing but the Coronavirus being in the news they would just want to know ‘Is it safe to come out yet?’ This great shot was taken by Gemma Hobbins who was out on some daily exercise around Newbridge and she just happened to glance up and saw this cute face looking back at her. Thankfully, Gemma was quick enough to grab her camera and get a shot as she flew by on her bike.

Rustic Ginger Biscuits I call these rustic as there is no piping or cutters used and will therefore all be slightly different and you can make them as big or as small as you like. You can easily increase or decrease the quantity of ground ginger used depending on personal taste. The recipe uses 2 teaspoons, but I normally use 3 and a bit as I do like a strong ginger flavour. Ingredients 113g soft brown/golden sugar 100g butter or margarine 2 tablespoons of golden syrup 2 teaspoons of ground ginger 1 teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda 227g self raising flour Heat oven to 190°C. In a saucepan gently stir and warm the butter, syrup and sugar until butter is melted and well mixed. Remove from the heat. Sieve together flour, bicarbonate of soda and ginger and stir into the melted butter, syrup and sugar mix. Form into a soft dough. Place small balls (about 1 teaspoon of mix) onto a greased baking tray. About 12 per tray and flatten slightly. They flatten and spread during baking. Bake for 12 minutes or until the colour is right for ginger biscuits and the top looks slightly rough. Remove from oven and cool slightly on the tray then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely. Enjoy with a nice cup of tea‌.

News report from Cllr Steve Hastings. Mobile: 07870127024 E-mail: steve.hastings@iow.gov.uk Twitter - @cllr_hastings Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) As from 25th May, Islanders have been able to take more items to the HWRC’s for recycling, but trips must still be essential (if your waste or recycling cannot be stored at home safely or disposed of safely by other means, such as your kerbside or bulky waste collection or garden waste subscription). Vans, trailers and pickup trucks can access the sites, with the appropriate permits. The one-way system on Briddlesford Road has now been lifted — but the temporary 30mph speed limit will remain in force. In order to maintain social distancing measures, protecting residents and staff, entry to the recycling centres is by pre-booked appointment only. Visit www.iwight.com/hwrcbooking to book a slot. The recycling sites will accept all the usual items except general ‘black bag’ waste (i.e. nappies, sanitary waste and cigarette butts etc), which people should continue to put out as part of their kerbside collection. COVID-19 App. Have you got the App yet? More than 50 per cent of Isle of Wight 14

residents have downloaded the Covid-19 tracing app that is being trialled here, the Government has revealed. Speaking at the daily Downing Street briefing, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said more than 70,000 people had downloaded the software on the island, which has a population of 141,000. He said: “There are now over half the residents of the Isle of Wight, where this is being tested out, who have downloaded the tracking app for the first time, or, in total, rather the actual number is 72,300.” The app launched on a trial basis for some key workers on the island recently before being rolled out to all residents later. Health Secretary Matt Hancock urged residents on the island not to relax social distancing measures despite its rollout. This is so far a good result and personally I never doubted that residents of the Island would step up and download the app. Virtual meetings As the lockdown continues for now the Council is planning to organize some official Council meetings virtually on Microsoft Teams. continued over the page

News report from Cllr Steve Hastings. Upcoming in June will be Scrutiny, Cabinet and Full Council meetings. Council Reserves It has been noticeable recently as this administration built up our reserves to around £12m (with minimum allowable £7m) and some members called at budget time for us to spend some of our reserves that we took the right decision to hold onto the fund for unforeseen emergencies, which is just where we now find ourselves through the COVID-19 emergency.

negotiations again as it is clear that is the direction Government want us to go in. Maybe we should be looking towards Hampshire County Council for a deal as we already have a number of cooperation deals with them. I will leave that thought with you for now and lets see what happens as we come out of this situation as an Island, a region and indeed a country. I wish you all well and stay safe.

I am very pleased now that we took this decision as we would have been bankrupt by now and being administered by Government Administrators with a section 114 notice under the Local Government Finance Act 1988 if we hadn’t been prudent and kept our reserves in place. Our excellent Cllr Stuart Hutchinson, Cabinet Member for Resources who has vast experience both as a Councillor and an Officer in the past, pushed this decision hard and we should all be grateful that he did. Devolution? I can’t help wondering as we come out of lockdown and assess our position going forward to recovery if we on the Island should be looking to devolution again. Perhaps a whole new deal should be looked at that supports the Island and gains Government funding as a devolved region. I am not sure the previous deal would have given the Island what it needs in support and finance but maybe we should start the

Life Before Lockdown!! I am at the stage where I refer to my life ‘before lockdown’ and life ‘during lockdown’… and I am shocked by the changes I have automatically made Let’s go back to ‘life before lockdown’ for a minute - I went about life at quite a fast pace, everything I tackled was at 100mph. My life back then was very structured, planned and did not really have much room for change. I thrived on being busy, running around, completing multiple tasks kept me going, made me feel alive. I didn’t have time to sit down quietly for a cup of coffee, I even found it hard to sit and watch thirty minutes of TV. Basically, I couldn’t sit still, and I couldn’t entertain myself and I found my own company rather boring!!! Added to this I was a terrible worrier, I worried about everything, I worried about things that didn’t need worrying about. Now let’s go back to the 23rd March and Boris’ announcement which immediately sent me (and nearly everyone else) into a state of panic. The first thought I had was what am I going to do for 12 weeks, then I thought about not having an income and then my biggest fear was worrying I was going to catch the virus. I lived in a panic fuelled shell for a little while and I was no longer in control of my own life, or rather that is what I thought!! The first couple of weeks of staying home and worrying about everything were hard and I knew I couldn’t go on like this so something had to change. I remembered something that my friend kept telling me which I had never fully been able to take onboard before. She said “worrying doesn’t actually solve anything, it won’t change the outcome and some things in life just can’t be controlled or changed so why waste your time” (thank you Maggie for these wise words). I thought about this and yes Maggie was right, I needed to ease up and at least try and enjoy the journey as I couldn’t change anything the Government had decided and worrying about the virus wasn’t going to stop it in its tracks. Fast forward 8 weeks and I am still at home. I now potter, I have started growing my own vegetables, planting flowers, baking, and I even sit in the garden and just watch the world go by. I plan meals, and I make time for a coffee and don’t mind sitting quietly, I’ve even found that my own company isn’t as bad as I thought, in fact when I talk to myself I sometimes say some funny things!!! My life has slowed down, and I am a lot less stressed. The only structure to my day is I always get dressed and put on all my make-up. I can while away many hours without actually doing anything… It’s a surreal life we are living in at the moment but myself like thousands of others are getting through it hour by hour, day by day. I’m looking forward to life after ‘lockdown’ and I plan to take my new skills with me and choose to live life at a slower pace and I might even stop and smell the roses. There are different paths to take in life and I was on the rough, pot holed road but now I’m ready to travel down the newly resurfaced road where I can admire the scenery at the same time. At least I feel I can take something positive from this pandemic.

COVID-19

(CORONAVIRUS)

During the current crisis FYTbus is still running its scheduled public transport, on MONDAYS, WEDNESDAYS AND FRIDAYS, for those who need to travel for essential shopping or prescriptions, setting off from Bouldnor Mead at 09.00, 10.40 and 12.20, and visiting Yarmouth, Freshwater Bay, Freshwater, Totland and Colwell, before returning to Bouldnor. Our standard adult fare is £2.50 but your travel is free if you have a concessionary bus pass. If you have a FYTpass (details are obtainable from our office) your travel is just £1.00. Our COVID-19 timetable is “posted” on those bus stops which hold a FYTbus timetable, and details of the service are available in pharmacies, and some other shops. You can also telephone our office (01983 752917) for information, or visit our website: www.fytbus.org.uk . The website also gives information on our “MEDICAL TRIPS”, which are available to help you reach St Mary’s Hospital or Brookside Health Centre for appointments, and can be booked on the above phone number or via West Wight Sports Centre on 01983 752168.

What we are doing to protect YOU and our volunteers:-

We don't want the people who use and work for our service to be put off by the fear of catching the virus, so our vehicles are cleaned every morning and our minibuses are equipped with handgel and tissues for the passengers and crew to use. In addition, our crews are regularly wiping down all the surfaces that passengers touch (handrails, seat-belt fasteners, headrests, etc.,) at regular intervals during their shifts. In an effort to give some protection to our highly valued volunteers and our cherished passengers, we also limit the spaces where passengers can sit. N.B. If anyone should feel unwell whilst aboard the bus, they should let the crew know, so that they can be taken home, and the contact details of any other passengers on the bus will be taken as a precaution.
