elcome to the June issue and near enough the halfway point of the year... and what a year it’s been!
Do you feel life is slowly returning to normal with the easing of lockdown? Or are you finding it hard to remember exactly what ‘normal’ life was? There is no doubt that many things have changed in our lives over the last 15 months, some good and some bad. Many people have embraced the time by learning new skills and have seen life through different lenses but how many of these changes are we going to continue with when we completely move out of lockdown. Many of us our re-evaluating what is really important and what isn’t. Local elections are finally over and congratulations to all those that were elected and re-elected. We have some great local businesses advertising with us who will appreciate you using their services and please let them know you saw their advert here. The weather hasn’t been brilliant so far but let’s hope that is destined to change. Whether you are sitting indoors while it rains or sitting on the beach soaking up the sun you can enjoy our puzzle section on pages 8 and 9. I hope you have a great June and I look forward to catching up with you again next month.

IW Trading Standards have a few scams for you to be wary of. • Reports of scam texts and emails purporting to be various mail providers, claiming that you need to pay extra for a package or asking you click on a link which could install malware onto your device – the companies all involved state that they would never contact you in this way (how would they know your phone number?) and would put a card through the door. • Reports that the National Insurance scam has been using an 01983 number – please don’t believe that just because it appears to be a local number that it is genuine, numbers can be purchased and are frequently cloned. • A message purporting to be from Google to say that your phone has viruses and you have to click the link to repair the problem – Don’t – this is a scam.

Totland Parish Council News Councillor Jan Cave was nominated and voted back as the Chairman of Totland Parish Council by fellow Councillors during the Annual Meeting held on 10th May. To keep in line with government guidelines we are looking at an alternative venue to hold our monthly meetings as these cannot be held online any longer. At the May meeting the Chairman welcomed new Councillor Michael Locke and welcomed Councillor Chris Jarman as the representative for Totland and Colwell. The Colwell Car Boot Sale at the beginning of last month was extremely well supported and we thank everyone who came along. There have been some that we had to cancel due to the weather during May and we hope you continue to support these in the future. Again, it was lovely to see people using the facilities in Totland now that we are coming out of lockdown, however, we must all remember this pandemic is not over and to remain safe. We ask you all to continue social distancing and using the hand sanitiser supplied or bring your own, and please adhere to the one-way system. If you are a seller, we do not expect you to arrive before 8.30am. If you arrive early do not start setting up as we have a new system that needs to be followed. Car Boot Dates for June – Saturday 5th, 12th & 19th. Beach Safety - Councillors are excited to report that in addition to the larger marker buoys and launching buoys at Colwell Bay that had been reported last month, we have finalised safe swimming buoys for Widdick Chine. Although both sets of buoys will be out during June, we would like to assure all that from next year they will be out for the 1st May. By working with the Isle of Wight Council and a local marine services contractor to design and install what will be 6
a robust and secure solution this will ensure that the safety at Totland’s beaches is a continuing priority. The boundary for the parishes of Totland and Freshwater runs down the middle of Colwell Chine Road and to the left is Totland and right towards Brambles is Freshwater. Whilst both parishes want to ensure that boats are moored at a safe distance and swimmers are safe within the zone, we have chosen different solutions, however, the aim is the same. Public Toilets – Colwell Public Toilets will be locked overnight due to the mindless vandalism recently. Councillors are also looking to upgrade these toilets and a plan will be shared with you all shortly. Totland Recreation Ground – Councillors have been looking at other uses for the Recreation Ground with local youth since October last year and a Bike Park has been a popular request. Councillors have agreed to move forward with this, and further details will be shared to residents soon. CONTACT DETAILS: Parish Clerk – Mrs Helen Gibbs - Telephone 756028 Totland Parish Council, Winchester House, The Broadway, Totland Bay, PO39 0AX. Email: clerk@totlandparishcouncil.org. uk or follow the Clerk on Twitter @ TotlandClerk. Your Parish Councillors are: Chairman Jan Cave, Vince Fennell, John Howe, Steve Blamire, Helen Wood, Gareth Wyre, Hilary Benns and Michael Locke. Freshwater Parish Council
Working For The Community. Cllr Anne Bamford
At our last meeting on the 4th May we had to say goodbye to four councillors, three of whom had served on the parish council for a long time. Gill Kennett had been a parish councillor for 21 years and during her time, with her knowledge of health, she has supported a wide range of issues especially with the support of establishing a community connector and the Just Ask Officer for the West Wight area. Her links with the Sports and Community centre helped with the parish establishing a secure working relationship especially recently with the newly established Community Hub. Clive Fleury was also on the parish council for a long time and was Chairman from 2012 – 2015 and then became Chairman of Finance and helped make changes in the way that we need to make sure residents are clear with the way we allocate money. He did take part in running projects to improve the play equipment on The Stroud. Clive is also a trustee of the Sports and Community Centre and always kept us up to date with the work that they were doing. Adrian Harris over the years has been a great benefit to the parish council with his knowledge of business and giving his advice with projects. He was a founder member setting up the FYTbus and getting the service underway and as a parish we help to support this service. Recently, his last project was helping the Freshwater and Totland Archive Group by establishing them in a shop on Avenue Road and under the name of The West Wight Heritage Centre. With its window displays it has 12
established itself quickly as a community hub for those who enjoy learning local history.
Vix Lowthion was with us for four years and with her knowledge of education she supported local parents to keep a primary school in Freshwater. All these people gave up their own time to help improve our village in Freshwater. The work as volunteers is very rewarding. I have completed my two year term as Chairman and I now am looking forward to running some new projects to help improve our village. We had our Annual Parish Meeting on the 18th May when our new councillors joined and our parish council can continue with the work that needs to be done at local level. Cllr Anne Bamford

The Friends of St Mary’s Need Your Help By Lesley Myland Here we are approaching a second summer of challenging circumstances but the Friends of St Mary’s continue to provide a retail service which the staff at the Trust clearly appreciate. They give us a great deal of support and encouragement which helps to keep us going. In spite of being in a rather reduced situation, we are carrying on and planning for opening up a little more widely as soon as we can. We have hopes of re-opening in the Ryde Wellbeing Centre and although it will not be for a while yet, we hope to resume our trolley service to the wards. We know how much this is missed and are working on an ordering service which we hope will bridge the gap in the meantime. The Charity will soon be preparing to ask hospital staff to consider how we can help them again in 2021 from the ‘Friends Fund`. We are pleased to say that we have many donations from patients who have been cared for at St Mary’s during the pandemic crisis and we have been greatly moved by that, but we do need to get fundraising again, particularly as we do not have the range of retail services that we did have supporting our funds. Recently we were overwhelmed by a gesture from a member of St Mary’s pathology staff, Jussna Mateen. She arranged for her colleagues to be able to take home curry dishes made by her family’s restaurant, Spice Central in Cowes. Proceeds from the event which amounted to well over £1,000 were donated to the Friends. The occasion marked the end of Ramadan which is regarded as a charitable month and we were honoured to be included in this way. A huge thank you to Jussna and her family who worked hard to make everything go so well and I can personally say that the food was fantastic! If there is anyone out there who might be able to think of ways to help us like this, please let us know. Our Business Manager, Debs Downer will be pleased to hear from you. You can contact us via email info@ fosmiow.co.uk, or telephone 01983 534405 or our website www.fosmiow.co.uk. 14

We limit the spaces where passengers can sit on our minibuses, and ask our customers to wear a mask or facecovering when they are on the bus or in the shop, and to observe the correct social distancing.
