Ian works mainly in silver but commissions can be produced in 9 and 18 carat gold. He has thrown out the theory that handmade is far too expensive and has made some eye catching silver stud earrings starting at just £16. These will make beautiful gifts for that special someone and throughout his collection of handmade lockets, pendants and rings you will find affordable pieces to suit all budgets.

A very warm welcome to the March issue of Island Magazines and thank you for picking up a copy. It looks set to be a busy month, starting with Shrove Tuesday on the 5th and then Mother’s Day, and don’t forget the clocks go forward one hour at 1am on the last Sunday of the month. Although we lose a valuable hour in bed we will start seeing lighter evenings. Our ‘Dates for your Diary’ on pages 14 and 15 are packed full with events happening across the island during March. I always like to give a small mention about the weather but I’m really at a loss of what to say this time except did you enjoy the small scattering of snow we had a few weeks back and do you think we can expect to see more of it like we did in March last year or shall we keep our fingers crossed that the cold weather has been and gone. I hope you enjoy this issue and please keep using the services or our advertisers and remember to tell them you saw them advertised here. I hope you all have a great month and I look forward to catching up with you again soon.

News report from Cllr Steve Hastings - Central Wight Mobile: 07870127024 E-mail: steve.hastings@iow.gov.uk Twitter - @cllr_hastings Waste and recycling Residents might be interested in some information that came to light at the recent Environmental Forum regarding taking waste to the recycling centre. If you run a small business and in the course of your work for instance as a plumber you have some items of waste left over and you are taking this away with you to remove it to the recycling centre you should be registered as a Waste Carrier with the Environment Agency. This is free to register on their web site but if you are not registered and are challenged you could be fined. If however you are running a business that’s sole purpose is to collect other peoples household and garden waste you must also register with the Environment Agency for a waste disposal licence and you will have to pay a fee as well which I believe is around £145. You can be fined up to £5000 if you don’t register. Fair Funding Review Later this year the Government will be dealing with the fair funding review and thanks to the persistence of Bob Seely MP and the Leader of the Council, Dave Stewart the Isle of Wight has finally been recognised as an Island and has actually been named in the report as the Isle of Wight having specific cost needs due to being an Island. This endorses the research from Portsmouth University that states the Island is short in 4

funding by some £6,000,000 compared to other counties, so hopefully now Government will reflect this in the coming settlement with the Isle of Wight Council. Fire Service Review and Consultation Finally we have received the results of the Fire Service Review and I am pleased to report that it was good overall, which went to Cabinet for approval. The consultation on the Combined Authority with Hampshire Fire Authority has finished and went to Cabinet and onto Full Council for approval which was carried, so going forward we will be part of a new authority named Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire Authority of which we will have representation on the Board. Also I am pleased to report that the new Deputy Chief Fire Officer for the Authority will be an Isle of Wight man Steve Apter who has almost 30 years of fire experience and takes over from Andy Bowers. I am sure we all wish him well in his new role. Environmental Action Plan Following on from the Environmental Conference the Council held last summer Cllr Hobart along with officers have looked at all of the suggestions made at the conference by attendee’s and have produced an Environmental Action Plan, which had its first showing at the Scrutiny Committee that I Chair on Thursday 7th February. Some of the contents of the plan are, continued over the page

It is good to see what can come out of a specific conference when a lot of stakeholders are in one room talking to each other.

News Report from Councillor George Cameron Email:- george.cameron@iow.gov.uk | Mobile 07701011481 Highways: I have to report the usual issues of the road network and highway issues in my ward. I have had a meeting at the top of Regina Road with Island Roads who will support me with an application to have Give Way signs at the Junction of Edinburgh and Regina Roads. This is now going through the process and will give drivers more clarity. On the top of Queens Road near the junction with Clayton Road, there has been a water leak for some months now and I have reported this several times. Finally this is on the job list and work will start soon. Another leak sprung in Copse Lane and this was dealt with within 3 days after reporting it. I have met up with our Island Roads Supervisor at Sunset Close to arrange dropped curbs for disabled buggies first and then on to the usual ward drive to see what and if anything else needs doing including the road level at Church Place. This is in discussion at present and Island Roads will get back with a plan to resolve this matter. Please report any road issues to me and I will deal with it. Armed Forces Day: This year’s events which involve people from all over the island will take place 22nd June. As previous years it will be a day of celebration consisting of a parade along Newport High Street to Quay Street finishing at Newport Quay where there will be performances, displays a sound stage, arena and stalls selling all sorts of items. The event will take place between 11:00am and 5:00pm. Please log this date in your diaries. I must congratulate Freshwater Coffee house with winning the My Isle Of Wight Red Funnel Award, I think it is well

deserved and if you have a spare minute, pop in for a tea or coffee and have a chat, you will be made most welcome. I did mention this in my previous report but I need to stress the point, we have a fantastic business community here in the West Wight and Freshwater in particular to enjoy a wide range of services, please support your local shops. Also a follow up from my last report, the WYSP group is still meeting on a regular basis and the idea of having extra seating sited on the Causeway to Yarmouth now have the full support of Freshwater Parish Council, I will update on this project later in the year. Lastly, there was a rumour that Freshwater Parish Council was cutting down trees, especially near the library. This was not true but it went out on social media, I would ask that people please get the facts before venturing down this route. The Parish clerk and his team are very helpful and they can be contacted on 752000 anytime and you will be supplied with the correct information. Many thanks and all the best,

George George Cameron

Cats Protection is set to welcome Islanders to its brand new visitor centre The IOW Adoption Centre in Ryde has been an important part of the Island community since 1961. For over 50 years, the Centre has been helping and homing on average 500 cats every year, and welcoming visitors from all over the island. With their recently opened new Visitor Centre, they are all set to give Islanders an even bigger welcome. There are plenty of good reasons to visit the Centre: • • • • •

A large welcoming reception with a wide selection of free cat-care guides and information leaflets. Knowledgeable staff who will take the time to understand visitors’ needs and lifestyle and offer objective advice about adopting a cat. A gift shop offering the latest Simon’s Cat range and other gifts, including ‘the world’s most irresistible catnip pouches’. A charity shop with good bargains. And most importantly, the cats in need of adoption – all homed in spacious pens (each with its own indoor and outdoor areas) where the cats are cared for by staff and volunteers who will happily show visitors around and introduce them.

If you’re thinking of adopting, fostering, volunteering or simply wanting to learn more about cats, IOW Cats Protection is the ideal place to visit. The Centre is easy to find (just a five minutes drive from Tesco and Busy Bees Garden Centre) and there is also free parking.

Life’s more fun with a cat Whether your kitty has hilarious quirks or loves getting into mischief, having a cat around means a lot more smiles and laughter in your life. Lots of cats like to chat and the very presence of a purring buddy can stave off loneliness any day. Whatever your environment, there will probably be a cat that suits you and your lifestyle. So just ask us and let us help you find the perfect feline friend for you.
