Spring is just around the corner... although the island has taken a battering recently with storm Ciara and storm Dennis the temperatures have been very mild up to this point. For weeks now there have been signs of Spring with daffodils and crocus already in bloom in gardens and hedges. Mothering Sunday is on the 22nd March and don’t forget the clocks always change on the last weekend of March, so this year, that falls on Sunday 29th. With the warmer weather coming soon seasonal businesses will soon be opening their doors to locals and visitors. The island will start coming alive with local events. Our ‘Dates for you Diary’ section on pages 10 and 11 will keep you busy and there is something for everyone including regular community events or one-off social engagements. If you are male and aged between 45 and 85 you are being invited by the Isle of Wight Prostate Cancer Support Group to have a FREE PSA blood test. Please see the article on page 13 for more information. I hope you enjoy reading this issue and I look forward to catching up with you again next month.

Freshwater Parish Council Working For The Community
Monthly Round Up By Mel Just Ask / Community Builder
diners enjoyed vegetable korma, leek and mushroom pasta, and a variety of puddings and a great time was had by all.
Working as a Community Builder for Freshwater Parish Council is an interesting and varied job and we thought it would be nice to let you know a little bit more about what I get up to.
If you know anyone who is suffering a financial crisis or food poverty, food vouchers can be obtained from both myself and Adam, our Community Connector.
Our thriving Community Café, ‘Our Place’ is held at West Wight Sports and Community Centre every Tuesday morning, and you can find me there helping our users solve practical issues, such as phone/tablet issues, form filling/ letter writing or making telephone calls. I’m also a dab hand at making a cup of tea.
As spring approaches my mind turns to our outdoor spaces. Following the success of the Orchard planting day in November, Freshwater Parish Council is holding another community planting event on 28th March. If you would like to get involved please email clerk@ freshwater-parish.org.uk with your best contact details for further information.
If I can’t help you then I’ll signpost you to an agency who can or I will help you connect with other community members for assistance. If you can’t make it to ‘Our Place’ you can always contact me to make an appointment at a time/place that is convenient. Our free family ‘Our Place’ sessions (Thursdays 3-5pm at WWSCC) have gotten off to a great start when we were visited by the Fire Service. The children got to try out the equipment and man the hoses. A great time was had by all. I recently met with Avril O’Rorke and we once again cooked up a storm at the monthly Community Meet & Eat which is held by the Real Junk Food Project and West Wight Time Bank. Feeding around 45 people with food that would otherwise have been destined for landfill. Our

Mad as a March Hare When looking for inspiration for this month’s front cover, I immediately thought of the saying ‘Mad as a March Hare’ and it was only natural that my first thoughts turned to local ‘Hare Whisperer’ Nick Edwards to use one of his many amazing hare photos. Amongst the hundreds he has taken this one caught my eye and shows the beauty of these wonderful animals.

Many of you will already be aware of how Nick spends his time waiting patiently at various locations across the Island ready to capture the hares in their natural surroundings and we have been very lucky to feature his photos over the last couple of years and I look forward to seeing more of them. Whilst Nick has continued to spend large amounts of his time photographing his favourite fastmoving subject over the last year, he has enjoyed other wildlife and local event photography, including photographing for RNLI media, as part of his station officer role at Cowes Lifeboat. In addition, last autumn, he was awarded the title “Photographer of the Year” by the Royal Society of Biology, had his work included in ten International photo exhibitions around the world and was a contributor to two photo books. One of these books is the local large format “Wight Book”, which has a related photo exhibition featuring the work of all the local photographers involved in the charity-benefitting book project, including Nick, currently showing at the Julia Margaret-Cameron Museum of Photography at Dimbola Lodge, Freshwater Bay (29th Feb – early April). Nick’s website www.wightseen.co.uk is home to his collection of pictures of varied subjects captured here on our beautiful Island. His prints are also available to purchase via Available Light Gallery in St Thomas Square, Newport. 5

FREE PSA Blood Test Event for men aged between 45 and 85 The Isle of Wight Prostate Cancer Support Group in partnership with the Cowes Masons will be organising another PSA blood test event on Saturday 25th April at Cowes Enterprise College, Crossfield Avenue, Cowes, PO31 8HB To obtain an appointment, it will be necessary to register and book online from 6th March, via our website; www.isleofwightprostatecancersupportgroup.org.uk The PSA event will run from 9.30 am – 4.00 pm and times can be selected that are convenient for each individual, subject to availability. Because we anticipate a large entry early on, we would advise that appointments are made promptly from 6th March, to guarantee a place. Because we realise that not everyone is computer confident and may need help to register online, we are running workshops at Newport and Ryde Libraries where an expert will be on hand to assist with booking for this event. Just come along to the library on these days:Newport Library Friday 6th March 1 – 4 pm or Ryde Library Thursday 12th March 1 – 4 pm With the new statistics recently released by NHS (UK) that over 12,000 men died last year from prostate cancer, we feel it is essential that all men over 50 should be tested and earlier if there is prostate cancer history in the family, or of West Indian or Asian descent. The testing will be conducted by trained phlebotomists taking blood from a vein in the arm, this will be analysed at a hospital laboratory and after a report has been produced by a Urological Consultant, the result will be sent to the person being tested within 7 – 10 working days.
One man dies every 45 minutes in the UK from prostate cancer and it is now the leading cancer found in men but statistics show that if caught in the early stages, treatment is 80% effective.
Don’t delay, get tested right away, since an early diagnosis can greatly improve your chances of successful treatment. For any enquiries email iwpcsg@gmail.com IW Prostate Cancer Support Group Reg. Charity No. 1173916

News report from Cllr Steve Hastings continued The Isle of Wights performance on climate change is better than most compared to other local authority areas. A recent national research project conducted by Friends of the Earth indicated the Isle of Wight area is the second best performing in the country. None-the-less, even the best performing need to do more to adapt to a changing climate and build resilience for energy water and natural resources. The Isle of Wight as a community should aim to increase public transport use, improve home insulation, reduce fuel poverty, and encourage alternative energy, re-evaluate our land use strategies and increase renewable energy. Through positive collaborative conversations with community groups, organisations, town and parish councils and individuals at the councils environment and sustainability forum we have taken on-board the wealth of excellent ideas and existing projects being delivered on the Island to enhance our agricultural system, biodiversity, ecology and reduce carbon impacts. This draft strategy is growing into living documents that will be regularly updated as actions come forward and are achieved. Target 2030 As a council we recognise that we are limited in our ability to deliver change to the whole area of the Isle of Wight. However, our Strategic Approach as a community Leader will be to: • Aim for the corporate functions of the IWC to be net zero carbon emissions by 2030
• Aim for the services we deliver as a council to be net zero carbon by 2030 where possible and commit to developing an evolving action plan for services and contracts for delivery to become net zero carbon emission when technologically and economically practicable. • Aim to develop alternative energy solutions for the civic buildings and estates on the island through a heat network and direct wire network with an associated energy centre • Aim to decarbonise our civic buildings. • Working with local University’s to develop a commercially viable electricity grid with associated battery storage owned by the council to build resilience and enable growth of a renewables sector. • Enable the Island Community to take actions that will allow residents, businesses and community groups to make changes that contribute to net zero carbon emissions by 2030. This includes developing a supportive community forum to facilitate Islanders to make environmental conscious changes. The community engagement Action Plan will be managed by the members of the Environment and Sustainability forum and be a live document. • Engage with Town and Parish councils to enable them to develop new zero emissions plans for 2030 for services delivered by them and residents and businesses in their local areas. The Draft Strategy is currently being costed and refined with input from the Environment and Sustainability forum and officers across all directorates of the council to ensure that we are able to achieve our 2030 aspirations for an energised and decarbonised resilient Island. 15
