Welcome to the May issue and thank you for picking up a copy. May is set to be a busy month, what with the two Bank Holidays and lots happening across the Island. You can find details of these events on the ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on pages 16 and 17. This month we have teamed up with Isle of Wight Cats Protection to find some forever homes for their Senior Kitizens. These mature cats are still so loving and wonderful companions and we had the hard task of choosing just five of them to be the stars of our feature, which you can read on page 4. This months front cover certainly made a splash and you can read about the photographer on page 11. As you know Stuart Hutchinson has been writing an informative monthly report for many years, in fact he has done 68 reports in total, but unfortunately this one will be his last. Due to work commitments Stuart has made the decision to pass the baton to someone else. His reports will be missed and a big thank you to him for his continued support of Island Magazines.

Senior Kitizens

Island Magazines has got together with the Isle of Wight Cats Protection Adoption Centre to let you know about some of the wonderful senior kitizens who are waiting for their forever home. You will definitely fall in love with these older cats and please don’t let their age put you off. Cats regularly live into their late teens or older these days, so most seniors will have many years of love to give. Older cats are usually more homely and have great personalities making them wonderful companions. Will is a very handsome 8 year old short haired black and white cat. He can be both chilled out and playful and likes to chase string and play with toys and other times like to be quiet and by himself. He doesn’t want to live with other animals and definitely likes the outdoors. Dizzy is a sweet natured independent mature lady. She doesn’t ask for much - a warm bed, yummy food and fuss. She is a 13 year old Tabby who doesn’t want to live with other cats and although a little older she is still young at heart. Dizzy cannot be rehomed to some areas of Ryde or Yarmouth. Maisy is a black and white 14 year old who really just wants her own comfy space in a quiet loving home. She can be very affectionate and loves a gentle stroke now and then. She doesn’t demand much attention but she’ll quite happily come to you when you approach and will purr away. Maisy seems very content to just chill out, so she could possibly be an indoor cat.

4

Suki loves the company of humans but not other animals. She enjoys being made a fuss of and will happily rub around you but she is not a hugger. Suki is Tabby and white and is a young 10 year old. Her dream home is a nice quite place to relax with a garden to nose around and a comfy armchair for naps. Suki cannot be rehomed in Ryde. Dora is a stunning 16 year old tortoiseshell and white cat. Dora’s owner went in to care, and she misses having a soulmate around. Dora likes pottering about in the garden. She isn’t the world’s biggest lap fan, but will happily follow you about. She has lived with a doggy before so may be ok to do so again.

FOSTER CARERS NEEDED

Do you have a spare room and time to make a difference? Cats Protection is in need of fosterers who can devote some time and love to socialise kittens or care for a cat not ready for adoption. You supply the love and CP will supply the rest and pay for all medical costs. If you are unable to commit to having a cat full time this could be for you? All support and training given (online training) Please call CP if you think you can help.

The Isle of Wight Adoption Centre, 122 Marlborough Road, Ryde. Open daily (except Tuesdays) 11am - 4pm. t:- 03000 120 251 www.isleofwightcats.org.uk | e:- isleofwight@cats.org.uk

News Report from Councillor George Cameron Email:- george.cameron@iow.gov.uk | Mobile 07701011481 I am aware that there are so many consultations lately and some might say that they suffer from survey fatigue but the latest survey that was launched on the 5th April is very important. This survey is by the Isle of Wight Community Safety Partnership and it ends on Friday 18th May and I am asking everyone to take part and complete the survey which is available online on the Council’s website. It will help to decide the work of the safety partnership which is made up of the Council, Hampshire Constabulary, IOW Fire & Rescue, National Probation Trust, Community Rehabilitation Company and the IOW Clinical Commissioning Group. It will also flag up issues that are of concern to local communities and I am aware that we have a certain element of crime and disorder in our area, hence the importance of the survey. I have been approached by resident’s who are very concerned about the amount of birds mess. This is pigeons and seagulls especially and I am on a mission to have the council introduce a policy for people not to feed these birds. I am a big fan of wildlife and will not tolerate cruelty to animals in any way but I must ask people not to feed these birds as they can be a nuisance. Even the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds said on it’s website that while it is “Best to avoid widespread feeding of Gulls”, a ban on feeding them alone will not solve the problem. There is not one solution to

the problem but if people stop habitually feeding them, it will certainly help. This is a big problem nationally and has been covered in the media and the BBC News and I believe some people have been attacked by seagulls. If we refrain from feeding them they might just migrate to the seaside where they are meant to be and not in our town centres or residential areas. Please share this message. One last thing before I close this report, that is to tell you about the Butterfly Ball, taking place at Golden Hill Country Park on Saturday 26th May. This is the first time that this kind of event has been held on Golden Hill and it is being arranged by Gift To Nature, our own local charity who own and manage countryside, green space and nature reserves across the Island for free, all year around. This is a live music event and this year’s headline act is Tensheds and according to Rick Wakeman, they are a very rare talent. Tickets are available from www.tickettailor. com/events/gifttonature/153965 And….the very next day is the kite flying festival at Golden Hill Fort and this event is free. Till next time,

George

Sienna has lived on the Island for 42 years and is still amazed daily at the wonderful flora and fauna that surrounds us. She is always up for a photographic challenge and is at her happiest when she is on the water, capturing sunsets/sunrises and nature. Sienna is a full time photographer and owns her own photography business called Soul Photography, but she also does freelance and runs workshops and courses with Steve at Island Photo Centre.

Report from Cllr Stuart Hutchinson: White Acre, Main Road, Wellow, Yarmouth PO41 0TD Tel:760048 email stu.hutch@btinternet.com. One of the key priorities the Conservative Group set out before the last election, and now incorporated as a crucial part of the Council’s future plans, is to help to improve the economy of the Island. That’s all set out under the catch-all title of Regeneration. How does that work in practice? Well, a good example is the recently approved Medina Yard development in Cowes, and I was pleased to sit on the Planning Committee that approved it. Anyone who knows Cowes will be aware of the problems experienced in finding a scheme to revitalise the area on the north west shore of the river. It is a badly run down collection of mostly time-expired industrial buildings, neglected for over 30 years. Readers may recall that just over two years ago there was a dramatic fire which razed many of them to the ground. That left an area which, without doubt, was the worst eyesore on the Island. It was dragging down the eastern side if the town, and had nothing to encourage trade. Discussions have been taking place between architects, developers and planners to deliver a scheme to improve the area. After a huge number of reports, revised plans, views from supporters and objectors, a scheme was finally put before the Planning Committee last month. Of course, as with any scheme, it can’t deliver what everyone wants, but in my view, and that if the Planners working on it, together with a majority of the Committee, it was the best we were likely to get. Had it been refused, talks would have dragged on for many more years, and there is always the likelihood of an appeal being decided by a Planning Inspector – especially as the government is keen to see re-development on “brownfield” sites, in which case the Council would have lost control over what’s 12

to be built. So what do we get? Over 500 dwellings, including one and two bed flats, hundreds of car parking spaces, 10,000 sq ft of retail, office space and food and drink outlets, all providing jobs, 140,000 sq ft of marine industry space (for those knowing ASDA in Newport that’s equivalent to three and a half stores of that size) with riverside access and also providing jobs. There’s also open public spaces and a riverside walk which don’t exist at the moment. In addition the developer is required to contribute £3M towards affordable housing in the Medina valley and has also offered £1.7M towards refurbishing the hammerhead crane. Personally I think that’s a horrible looking structure and I’d rather have seen more low cost housing, but as I said, no scheme pleases everyone. I reckon that’s a pretty good example of regeneration and will revitalise a whole area of Cowes. Finally I’m sorry to say that this will be my last article for the Magazine. I have enjoyed writing a monthly page for more than five years, and whilst you may not have agreed with everything I’ve said – it would be a miracle if you had! - I do hope you have at least found it interesting. I’m stepping down because I’ve been asked to continue not only with the job of Cabinet Member for Resources, which is one of the most challenging jobs in the Council, but also as Deputy Leader. I’ve found over the last year that those roles, together with being Ward Councillor for the largest ward on the Island, is more than a full time job, and something has to give! Kind regards to all my readers, Stuart Hutchinson
