News Report from Councillor George Cameron Email:- george.cameron@iow.gov.uk Mobile 07701011481 I am one for progress and the use of technology as our lives dictate these days but there are people who don’t use the internet to conduct their business and that is the people that I think we need to support.

if one thinks of Stratford, immediately Shakespeare springs to mind and that is what we need to achieve here in the West Wight as we have quite a lot of history in our midst.

The IOW Council has earmarked ÂŁ100,000 to improve their contact centre facilities and employ more call handlers at the call centre. In the past I experienced waiting some 20 minutes for my call to be answered so I am well aware of how frustrating it can be so with this investment your call is now being answered in just over two minutes, I think this is an improvement and money well spent especially when one in four callers are over the age of 65.

With the works in Avenue Road continuing I am concerned that the business community has suffered quite some losses in the process and that needs addressing. I think that the business owners have been very patient and I would encourage everyone to support our local shops, they are important to our local infrastructure and without them we will find it difficult to cope. I hope that with the improvement works, when finished we will see a thriving and pleasant Avenue Road shopping area for us to use and enjoy.

At the end of September I went to visit Farringford House along with some of my fellow parish councillors. The visit was well organised and I was very surprised with the amount of work that has been done to restore the property to what it was when Lord Tennyson was living there.

George.

I think it is a must for all to visit this historical house in Freshwater. They do organised tours and booking is essential, the idea is to get small groups to visit so that one can enjoy and appreciate the history is has to offer. I often wonder why we are not more active in promoting our local history, 8

The autumn is an exciting time for us at the Friends of St Mary’s Hospital. This is when we sit down and look at all the applications that come in from the Hospital staff who want to purchase equipment and resources to make patients’ treatment and hospital stays just that bit better. This activity is the core of what the Charity is all about. We are often asked why the NHS cannot provide these things. The answer is that the NHS must statutorily provide a level of resources to meet needs. What we are asked for is equipment that goes that bit further to improve treatment and outcomes. Think of it like buying a car. Four wheels will get you from A to B, but a better model will increase comfort and your travelling experience. We cannot provide everything that is asked for and it is sad to have to refuse funds for some very worthwhile items. But we take great care to discuss all the applications with senior hospital staff and they help us maintain a sensible perspective on what priorities we set for our deliberations. Once our decisions are made, the applicants are informed and the purchase process begins. It can take some time to get everything in and we keep a keen eye on when items are delivered so that we can go and see them in use. Examples of what we will be providing this year are special brightly coloured and safe crockery and cutlery for dementia patients and a sub epidermal moisture scanner which will assist in the reduction of the occurrence of pressure sores.

We also endeavour to provide certain items for staff - for example, last year we provided comfortable furniture for the rest rooms for the pathology lab.

This year we have provided grants to two doctor’s surgeries for equipment that will mean less hospital visits. This is convenient for patients and also relieves some pressure on St Mary’s itself. We allocated approximately £79,000 worth of grants for 2017. All this is possible because of two main things. One is the incredible generosity of Islanders who donate from putting spare coins in boxes right up to remembering us in their will. The other is the fantastic team of over 60 volunteers who run our cafes in the hospital foyer, at the Laidlaw Centre and in Ryde Health and Well Being Clinic. We also have a well stocked shop in the Hospital foyer. You can help us by using these facilities as much as you can. The coffee is great and less than half the price of high street brands. All the profit after running costs goes to the Friends’ Fund so that extra cup of coffee may well help to fund something you or a loved one will feel the benefit of when receiving hospital treatment.

Report from Cllr Stuart Hutchinson: White Acre, Main Road, Wellow, Yarmouth PO41 0TD Tel:760048 email stu.hutch@btinternet.com. I have the opportunity to write an article in this magazine as Councillor for West Wight Ward. But today I’m writing whilst wearing another hat, that of Cabinet Member for Resources, where my focus at the moment, as I write this whilst grabbing a cup of coffee between meetings, is on Finance. As I said last month, this is the time, between now and Christmas, when all our attention is on how we shall deliver the services we have to, with a reducing budget and an increasing demand. My job is to work through, with my colleagues in Cabinet, how we square that circle.

bigger services which have the lion’s share of funding, that cash figure is greatest. I am in the midst of working through with colleagues, where the changes will lie. That’s done line by line, each line being a type of expenditure. There are hundreds of lines. We then look in detail at the implications of the change for those receiving the service. Eventually a value judgement has to be made as the importance of one thing over another. That’s the most difficult decision of all because we have to weigh one valued service against another equally important one, knowing that one will lose out in some way.

I have asked colleagues to look for savings within their portfolio of a bit more than the I can say it is the most challenging and difficult job I have ever had to do -as well as overall £7.5M that we have to find. That is so that collectively, when we see the the worst paid by far! implications of all the changes, we hope to have a little financial “wriggle room” so The way in which I am approaching it is that we have funding to retain a service, to allocate a percentage level of saving required against each of the Council’s budget or indeed even improve it, where we see the greatest need. Our Council Officers are areas. Each of ten broad budget areas (or giving us really good and helpful advice portfolios, as they are usually called) has and suggestions, but as your elected a Cabinet Member with responsibility for representatives, it is our job to make the delivering the services within it, and within difficult decisions, and to carry responsibility the finance available. for the consequences of the decision. The percentage reduction is the basic change, but I have adjusted that by weighting several factors, including how well My personal task is at least as difficult as that of my colleagues, not only because of a service has done in the past at achieving the overall responsibility for the Council’s savings, by the potential for delivering budget, but also because if I don’t achieve the service differently at lower cost whilst the financial targets in my own portfolio, achieving targets, and by the capacity how can I hold them to task in theirs? to increase any income that the service receives. That’s why I say it’s the most challenging job All of that translates into a cash figure which I have ever had to do - but in fact I’ll qualify that; I know that next year will be even more is the reduction required. No service is difficult – we have to find another £7.5M ! exempt from that, and of course for the 18
