Welcome to the November issue of Island Magazines. I don’t have much to say this month on the weather except that it’s been very wet and it feels like it’s rained for weeks!!! Fingers crossed that by the time you read this the rain will have stopped and we’ll get some nice dry crisp days. Remembrance Sunday is on the 10th of November and the month is packed with Christmas Fayres and firework/bonfire events taking place across the island. Our ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on pages 12 and 13 will keep you busy. Please remember that if you are having a firework display in your garden please let your neighbours know so they can ensure their family pets are kept safe and secure. Inside is packed with news and information including an update from The Friends of St Mary’s. There are some great local businesses advertising and please support them by using their services as much as you can.

The Friends of St Mary’s Hospital Update By Lesley Myland You may have recently heard via various sources about the Friends’ foyer cafe moving to another location within the new outpatients department in the North Hospital. Naturally we are sad about this - we have been serving our customers in the foyer for 32 years. However, our amazing team of volunteers and staff have a very positive approach to this development. We are working hard together to ensure that the Friends’ charity will keep on functioning to support the patients and staff at St Mary’s. We plan to keep our amazing team together as far as we can. We will have a bigger shop and will still be running three cafes. Ward trolley services will still go round daily, sometimes twice daily. So there is still lots to do and we will do our best to maintain our reputation for a caring attitude and good service. In the meantime, here are some of the things we have given grants for, as always with the objective of enhancing care and staff well being. We have provided the maternity unit with 5 relaxing and reclining chairs so that partners can wait in comfort for their new babies to arrive, no matter how long it takes! We are very proud of our contribution of £1500 towards the Memory Room for dementia patients in Colwell Ward. This provides a place to relax and enjoy distraction therapies especially designed to be familiar, calming and absorbing. The room is also used by non dementia patients. Note the twiddlemuffs which were made by Friends volunteers and customers with wool kindly donated by members of the public after an appeal. We gave Children’s Speech and Language Therapy 2 iPads and a range of toys designed to help with speech, attention and listening skills which in turn help with other communication skills. As soon as we are settled in our new home in the North Hospital we hope that all our customers will still come and join us for their cuppa! That way we can continue with this support for the patients and staff at St Mary’s Hospital.

Freshwater Parish Council

Working For The Community. Cllr Anne Bamford

Parish Facilities Officer - Shaun has been busy again this time clearing and tidying up Stroud Coppice. He is also making squirrel boxes and feeders and placing them around the area. He has now completed his work on all of the parish seats and he has repaired and refurbished some or completely making and installing new ones. We hope everyone enjoys using these seats when on their walks.

Causeway Bridge - As a parish we are getting concerned with the condition of the bridge, especially with the plastic sandbags which are now degrading and the condition of the railings and poles which have deteriorated badly. Island Roads are going to remove the plastic sandbags and replace them with hessian ones however this does not really solve the problem. Cllr Cameron has agreed to take up the issue of the railings. The parish will call for another meeting with Island Roads over the next few weeks to try to help resolve the problem.

Book Fair - This local event went well this year. The fair was well attended with 70 people attending. The author workshop at the library was also fully booked. The readings at Freshwater Coffee House was also fully booked and the readings done by children was particularly popular. Christmas Crafting Event - The parish has organised a crafting event on Saturday 30th November 10am-1pm at the Memorial Hall on Avenue Road. This is a free crafting event open to all. Under 16 year olds must be accompanied by an adult. There will be Story Time with Rhapsody the Unicorn and light refreshments. Community Orchard - Starting at the beginning of November new fruit trees, including nut trees, will be planted at the Jubilee Close/Cameron Close corner section in The Stroud.

Just Ask Mel - Mel has been supporting the TimeBank and The Real Junk Food War Memorial at All Saints Church Project cooking up lunches using - The parish has had the War Memorial food that has been donated or would cleaned and it does now looks much better otherwise be heading for landfill. News report from Cllr Steve Hastings. Mobile: 07870127024 E-mail: steve.hastings@iow.gov.uk Twitter - @cllr_hastings St. Mary’s Roundabout Controversy At a Newport and Carisbrooke Parish Council Meeting recently there was a vote to stop the scheme going ahead although the proposers are not qualified engineers nor did they have any advice from an engineer against the scheme. I voted against the proposal to stop this scheme in its tracks because any further delays will cost tax payers more money with further losses from the £9.6m which is strictly for the St. Mary’s roundabout and as it has been delayed already for a year the value of the Government grant has reduced to the tune of £0.5m and I don’t want to see that grant further devalued. This money was awarded for this section of the scheme due to the future development of Camp Hill and cannot be used for any other purpose so if we don’t go ahead with this we would have to hand the money back to the Government. The start point was deemed necessary at St. Mary’s due to potential development at Camp Hill which would need updated infrastructure to cope at that point and often we get complaints over developments coming forward without having the infrastructure in place first. The traffic lights will also be intelligent and synced with those at Coppins so that it will keep the flow of traffic towards Coppins and allowing traffic through by traffic lights at Coppins cooperating with the flow. 14

This is but one part of the whole scheme and Coppins will be dealt with as part of that scheme as well as St. Georges Way. The Cabinet Member Cllr Ian Ward sent a letter to all Councillors for their information on September 12th and members have attended briefings on the subject, as well as a consultation-taking place. When this scheme was given approval at a Cabinet Meeting there were no objections from members. One Councillor stated that he did not feel qualified to pass on information he received from engineers in a members briefing and wanted engineers to come to a public meeting with residents and on this I agree it should happen however the same Councillor then proposed that the scheme should be stopped but still with no engineering qualification or competence. I have asked the Leader of the Council and Chief Executive to please organise a public meeting to explain the scheme to residents and now this will go ahead. There have also been full-page notices of explanation placed in the local newspapers. I could not say whether this scheme is going to work or not as I am not a qualified engineer either but as a Cabinet Member, when making a decision you have to state what is a required outcome and then rely on

News report from Cllr Steve Hastings continued the professionals that we employ to design a scheme for that outcome. I can imagine some people would say, what like the floating bridge but the truth is we were starting to get problems with floating bridge five and this was due to the change in tides and not boat design although there have been some design faults that are being addressed and most have now been sorted out so that most of the time recently it has been running at 100% efficiency. Of course when this administration came to County Hall the floating bridge had already been designed and ordered and we just had to deal with what was in front of us which we have done and a final solution is in sight. I hope this helps for residents understanding of my position with this particular proposal at the Newport and Carisbrooke Parish Council Meeting and subsequently at County Hall due to an Extraordinary Full Council Meeting. Island Plan and Housing Numbers It was good to have residents attend recent public meetings at both Rookley and Newport alongside our MP Bob Seely. Bob is right when he says we should have an opt out on the methodology used for housing numbers as we have special circumstances to overcome with regard to affordable housing due to being an Island.

I feel that if Scottish Islands can have an opt out because they can only be reached via a ferry then what part of only being able to be reached by a ferry don’t the Government understand about the Isle of Wight. I am reminded of a Benny Hill sketch when Benny said he was going abroad and his sidekick asked him where he was going and he said the Isle of Wight to which the sidekick stated but that’s not abroad and Benny retorted, well you try walking there cookie boy! I think we do have a good case and I am pleased that Councillors and our MP are now working together through a process to reduce numbers in the plan and to get the right affordable homes built in the right places to reduce our housing waiting list of Islanders needs.
