Welcome to the November issue. The clocks have gone back an hour and that extra time in bed was gratefully received. Autumn is in full swing and Winter is just around the corner. There has been a definite drop in the temperature but there have still been some lovely sunny days. For me it’s the simple things in life like still getting the washing dry outside! This month’s issue is packed with news, information and a range of interesting articles which I hope you will all enjoy reading. As usual we have some great advertisers offering a range of services including Christmas gifts and ideas. Our puzzles on pages 12 and 13 will keep you busy and if you see yourself as a budding writer there is a great competition being run by Sight for Wight and you can find more details on page 5. It’s been a very difficult year for everyone, and many local businesses have been and still are struggling, so please use their services whenever you can. I hope you enjoy this issue and please let any business owners know about us and how they can advertise and promote themselves in this monthly community magazine. If you have any news or information you would like to share, please get in touch with me and I will always help in any way that I can. Enjoy your November and I look forward to catching up with you again soon.

News report from Cllr Steve Hastings. Mobile: 07870127024 E-mail: steve.hastings@iow.gov.uk Twitter - @cllr_hastings Green Island Homes Grant The Green Island Homes Grant is a variation on the Government scheme but is the result of our application for a grant of £500k, which officers were successful with achieving. Homeowners on low incomes could receive up to £10,000 towards the cost of making their homes warmer and more energy efficient. The Isle of Wight will be one of the first places in the country to benefit from the government’s new Green Home Grants Local Authority Delivery scheme - thanks to a successful bid by the Isle of Wight Council. Under the scheme, low-income households will be able to apply for grant funding to cover the cost of hiring tradespeople to upgrade the energy performance of their home.

double or triple glazing when replacing single glazing, and low-carbon heating like heat pumps or solar thermal - measures that could help households save up to £600 a year on their energy bills. As part of the scheme, the council also plans to work closely with the Isle of Wight College on training and apprenticeship opportunities. Eligible households will have: • A combined income of less than £30,000 per year; and • An Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of E, F or G. The scheme will be open to owner-occupied, private rented and social rented properties. Further details, including how to apply, are published on the council’s website. Anti-Social Behaviour Campaign As you all can see from the four banners we have put up, we want to make the public aware of the phone numbers you can use when they want to report bad behaviour that they might see going on as they walk through our village. We are finding vandalism going on especially around the Skatepark and MUGA area, toilets and the play equipment on The Stroud. We are working closely with the Police and they have helped us by giving lots of advice and support. Queens Road Quite a few residents have been asking me about how we are getting on trying to save two of the Chestnut trees and we have also had quite a few emails and we would like to thank you all for your support. We have already obtained expert advice and at the moment we are in conversation with Island Roads and Southern Vectis to try and resolve this issue. ‘As a council we are working to protect our trees and the environment for the enjoyment of the community’. Some pruning is going to take place on some of the other trees that overhang the road. Parish Boundaries The name Middleton reflects the place that has our next interesting boundary. As you drive from Freshwater Bay and turn right into Middleton the right-hand side of the road is in Freshwater and the left-hand side is Totland. Not many people know the name of the grassed piece of open space there and it is called West Green. The boundary goes right down the footpath 8

beside the stream and is a popular walk and the area is called Spin Fish and is a lovely scenic way of walking into the village centre.

Parish Facilities Officer As winter approaches, we have purchased some new high visibility jackets for Shaun to wear with our parish name and logo on the back to let the public know who he is. Around The Stroud he is still having to pick up lots of bags of dog poo that people have thrown next to hedges instead of putting them in the dog bins. He is also finding some rubbish being left and we have put a new bin by the bench at Black Hut Green. We are now using recycle bins for Shaun to put the bottles and tins in and we are pleased they are not going to landfill. Moa Place Car Park Recycling Area Lots of rubbish has been left in this area. Although this is not a parish amenity, we have phoned up the recycling company that have two bins and they have quickly come to empty the bins to stop clothes being left around them. All sorts of other rubbish has been put there and we have had a report about rats in the area. We did inform the Isle of Wight Council who did organise the area to be cleared and it all looked much better, unfortunately more rubbish has started to be dumped there again, especially cardboard. Please take your rubbish home. It is quite easy to book a slot at our local Afton Marsh www.iwight.com/hwrcbooking.

Boat Park at Freshwater Bay A sink hole has appeared on the footpath that goes up to the shelter. At our meeting this month it was decided that we will retarmac the whole path and make sure it is safe for everyone to use. Flower Troughs We are very lucky to have a volunteer called Kate and she has been looking after the flowers and changing from summer to winter bedding. We certainly had a lovely display of colour this year and it does brighten up the village.

‘Bits & Blogs’ As the nights draw in nothing beats sitting down with a good book, but one better than that is a book written by a fellow Isle of Wighter… ‘Bits and Blogs’ is the work of Poppy Fields who moved to the Island permanently after being made redundant from her job of 25 years. Before that she lived between the Island and the mainland and her book follows the ups and downs of life, many of which we will all be able to relate to. Written as a collection of blogs her funny, light-hearted, emotive, and touching anecdotes about her life can be enjoyed and they also make it easy for the reader to dip in and out of this entertaining book. Poppy is just a typical wife and grandmother who now works part time in Morrisons. She shares colourful stories about several weird and wonderful episodes in her life – from the day-to-day quandaries of a middle-aged, bingo-loving, accident-prone, hot-tub-dipping, sweet-fanatic mother, her continuous battle with her weight (and frustrations with Fat Clubs!), and a very Sober October to raise money for Macmillan in memory of her dear late friend. Along with her love and pride for her close-knit family, and an abundance of hilarious moments that will literally have you laughing out loud, the author also reflects on some poignant and sad times in her life that will resonate with anyone who has ever been in a similar position. This book is the perfect gift for yourself or as a Christmas present that will just keep giving and giving. Available to buy from Amazon as a paperback or kindle edition.

He’s small but he is mighty…

TML CREATIVE

I had no trouble thinking of this month’s front cover. All I had to do was look out my window for inspiration as I have been befriended by a little robin who lives in the hawthorn at the bottom of the garden. I decided to name him and to be honest I decided to keep it simple and he is now known as Mr Robin… he is here all day, every day and has been for the last 5 weeks or so.

Interior Architecture & Design

Most mornings you can hear his high pitched singing and some particular mornings if he has got out of bed on the wrong side (which happens to us all) he can be very vocal and almost aggressive in his tune. This also happens if I have been a bit slack and not filled the feeders to the standard he likes. The hawthorn bush is home to at least 20+ little sparrows and a blackbird but it is clear to see that Mr Robin is the leader and has no trouble keeping everyone in line. The robin is officially Britain’s national bird and they have been associated with Christmas as postmen in Victorian Britain were nicknamed “robins” because of their red-breasted coloured uniforms. So, the robin on the Christmas card came to represent the postman who delivered the card.

Robins are known to have spiritual and symbolic meanings and signifies loved ones are still with us after they pass away, bringing us a sign from heaven, encouraging us to move forward with acceptance and determination. Above all, the robin red breast symbolises passion, a new beginning, and re-birth. Therefore, if the bird flies into your life you will be blessed with happiness and joy. I take a lot of pleasure from feeding the birds, and this small task means so much to them as the winter weather can have a severe impact on them and they can use up to 10% of their body weight during one cold night, and unless able to feed well every day to replenish its reserves, a prolonged cold spell can be fatal. Once they know food is available, they will be back time and time again. 11

Totland Parish Council News Vandalism has reduced slightly with only Colwell public toilets being damaged this month. The Clerk regularly talks with the Police and we are all working together to combat any problems. The Police Beat Surgery has started again, and the next opportunity to speak with our local PCSO will be Wednesday 11th November between 10.15am and 10.45am in the Parish Office. Parish Council meetings started again in September using Microsoft Teams and Councillors have agreed to revert back to monthly meetings during this pandemic. I think we can all agree holding meetings in this way is very different but this is something we will continue to do until such time we can meet at the Parish Office again. Sadly, the Remembrance Parade will not be going ahead on Sunday 8th November at the Totland War Memorial. The Royal British Legion West Wight Branch are disappointed; however, the overriding priority and guiding principle is that we must ensure that everyone is kept safe. Whilst a crowd of people congregated around one war memorial focuses the thoughts of the West Wight community, it is very hard to see how this could be achieved within the current social distancing rules. Wreaths, however, have been ordered by most organisations and they are invited, taking the necessary Covid precautions, to lay their wreaths at a West Wight War Memorial of their choice, at a time of their choice, on Friday 6 November or Saturday 7 November. If wreaths are laid as proposed this will reduce the possibility of large gatherings. 14

We are very happy to lay wreaths on your behalf if requested. The parade at Totland is postponed until November 2021. New Memorial benches have been installed on Cokes Green and if you have not already seen these, I encourage you to have a look. The Parish Council has received many compliments on these seats which not only look amazing they are also very comfortable. The two seats that had been removed were beyond repair, however, West Wight Men in Sheds will be recycling as much as possible and the wood will be used to repair others. Councillors would also like to thank the West Wight Men in Sheds for painting the outside of the offices. This was started last year and due to certain restrictions had been unable to finish. During October, the weather remained dry at a time when members were also available and finished painting the walls. The Skatepark and MUGA facility had been maintained over the past 10 years by both Totland & Freshwater Parish Council. At both Parish Council meetings held in October it was agreed that Freshwater would take back their assets and run themselves. Over the years Totland Councillors have enjoyed working with Freshwater Councillors and wish them well with the redevelopment plans they have for this area.
