Dear Readers Welcome to the October issue of Island Magazines. Mention the word October and I automatically think of crisp Autumn leaves, cooler weather, sweaters and boots!!! Yet whilst writing this, the sun is shining and we have had a good few sunny days leading up to this point. The Island is nearly empty of visitors and although it is nice having them here it’s nice to get the Island back to ourselves.

...stationery y leaflets y flyers y posters y display print y multi-part forms y banners y and much more...

In this months issue there is an appeal to all readers for your help with the Rotary Christmas Shoebox Appeal to send presents to disadvantaged children and you will find full details of this on pages 10 and 11. The ‘Dates for your Diary’ is on page 6 and although not quite as busy as the summer months there are still interesting events happening across the Island. I hope you enjoy this issue and please keep using the services of our advertisers and if you have any news or events happening in the future please feel free to send me the details. Until next month.

Gutter Clutter We are now into Autumn and the leaves will be falling from the trees and they could potentially be falling into and blocking your gutters which in turn could make your insurance null and void as most insurers now claim that gutter clearing falls under general maintenance and is something that should be looked at regularly. When your guttering is blocked the rain water will over flow and will eventually cause damage to the structural elements of the building, water will erode the building material and can ultimately cause damage to the foundations, drainage system and the paving. Internally, damp will appear and create mold and mildew that is not only bad for the building but also your health. Having your gutter cleared once a year will significantly reduce the risk of any blockages caused by leaves, moss or any other debris. This means that the water from your roof will flow directly to the drainage system and away from your property reducing the risks of damage to your property. Island Garden Timber Care offer the latest technology in gutter clearing saying goodbye to costly scaffolding and ladders their hi tech powered vacuum with portable video camera allows them to survey and clean gutters from ground level.

Are you fed up with your dirty paving? Does your timber need some TLC? We can get it looking like new again. WE ALSO OFFER

Helping the Honey Bee Do you want to help the declining Honey Bee population? Are you Eco minded and believe in helping Mother Nature?

Mick Dunn is a beekeeper who needs help to find a small, (or large) parcel of land to locate some Honey Beehives. Ideally this would be in the Freshwater/ Totland/Yarmouth area but would be willing to travel further afield for the ideal location. The bees are excellent and important pollinators and will help your garden greatly especially improving fruit and veg yields. Mick is a member of The Isle of Wight Beekeeping Association and collect swarms from peoples gardens when needed in West Wight.

Report from Stuart Hutchinson: West Wight Ward. White Acre, Main Road, Wellow, Yarmouth PO41 0TD Tel:760048 email stu.hutch@btinternet.com. The Council pays none of it back, though we do have a commitment, as part of the deal to pay a small amount of the revenue cost. The Island Council had to bid for the money. We were one of just three Councils that were awarded a grant. Some might say that’s because our roads were in such a bad state I’m asked by residents from time to time “how come the Council is spending so much that we needed it more! But the important thing was that we won money on the roads when it’s cutting other services”. Services which are seen as being at the bid. Had we not done so then our roads would have continued to deteriorate because least as important. in today’s financial climate we could not have covered the huge cost of upgrading them. Usually that question means I’m talking to a relatively new resident because most do The contract started in 2013. There were seem to have a pretty good understanding undoubted problems in the first year or as to why we are doing that and a few of you are better informed than I am as a local two as the company geared up to do the work, and invested heavily in new plant and councillor! machinery. Part of the problem was that the elderly asphalt plant just couldn’t produce the But for those who ask, it’s because of the contract we have; my apologies to those who quality of material needed. The new plant at Blackwater is state of the art and produces already know this... high quality road material with almost no smell or emissions. I was given a guided tour The contract is a really long one. It runs for 25 years. It’s also the biggest, in money terms about a year ago and said, in all innocence, it that the Council has ever signed; our auditors that it was pity I couldn’t have seen it working – when I got closer I realised it was! estimate it’s value as about £725 millions over that time. Almost all of that money We are now gradually seeing the real benefits is provided, not by the Island Council but of that grant money. Section after section of through a government programme known road is being renewed and the new surfaces as a PFI which stands for Private Finance Initiative. That means the money is provided are a pleasure to drive on. It means that this winter we shall have a lot less potholes than by a private company, part by borrowing, part from revenue and the company is then we’ve been used to. And because the contract requires it, work on busy roads has to be paid through the contract for the work it done at night, so whilst we might grumble does. The contract is for such a long time because there is so much capital investment at constant road works, they are being done which takes time to pay back. Any company with as little disruption as possible. investing that much money needs a level of The renewal work is intense. Every road will certainty before they will invest. be resurfaced within the next three years. We shall then have some of the best roads in the The money to pay the company comes as a grant from Government. A grant, not a loan. country. This month I look at something which affects all of us, most of us use every day and gets no comment unless we are inconvenienced in some way. The Island’s roads.

Monthly News Report by John Medland IW Councillor for Freshwater South. Tel: 07543 309 219 or email jcmedland@outlook.com Freshwater Parish Council, working with a range of partners, has been working on a project to provide a new information service for the community which will be based in the West Wight Sports and Community Centre In 2015 with the help of an “Our Place” grant from the Department for Communities and Local Government Freshwater Parish Council established a steering group made up from interested people including Freshwater parish and county councillors, the clerks of Freshwater and Totland councils, West Wight Sports and Community Centre, Friends of Freshwater Library, Churches Together in the West Wight, Neighbourhood Policing Team, Age UKIW Care Navigators, Local Area Co-ordinator Community Co-ordinator and members of the public. Following an earlier consultation, the public told us that it was getting difficult to access information support locally. There are a wide range of services available to different groups of people if you know how to access the information. This service will hope to be able to help people to do that. Around 25% of the Island population is now over 65 and sometimes requiring additional support to find the help that they need, others may need to seek information around council tax, housing issues or general information which may not be easily accessed other than through the Council’s call centre. By July partnership working between local agencies enabled the set-up of ‘Our Place’ drop in sessions with volunteers at the West Wight Sports and Community Centre every Friday from 11.30am to 2.30pm.

all local activities and organisations, to encourage “locally led action” and develop a directory of all the local services that are available as well as enabling access to statutory services and providing support to people seeking information support. In September Freshwater Council agreed to act as the employing body for the post. The withdrawal of IWC outreach services from the Library and the sheer difficulty of contacting County Hall means that we need local online services and people who know how to use them. One of the roles of the newly appointed ‘Just Ask’ officer will be to help people access Council services through the SWISH computer portal at the Sports & Community Centre. There is also a SWISH portal in Freshwater Library for public use. Although based in Freshwater the ‘Just Ask’ initiative is intended to eventually be accessible from ‘Just Ask’ access points all over the West Wight. Totland Clerk Helen Gibbs has already pioneered the information centre approach at the Parish office in the Broadway. It is also hoped that local shops and chemists will become places advertising the new ‘Just Ask’ logo which would indicate that they are happy to advise people using their particular expertise.

The Chairman of the Our Place Committee Gill Kennett said that “health, social and care” services all need to be delivered in more of a locally integrated person-centred way. The concept of wellbeing needs to extend to IW Council Public Health team have agreed to social activities to combat social isolation and support a one-year part time post to develop loneliness plus helping people to access the to a daily information service, to network with information they need to help them with their other organisations active in the area, to “map” day to day living”

John Lea of Wootton has had his exciting children’s adventure story published by A H Stockwell Ltd of Ilfracombe, on 19th August. John Lea served in the RAF before teacher training at the Institute of Education of London University. He taught English for forty years in various schools before becoming headmaster of Ryde Junior School and then headmaster of Downside Preparatory School in Surrey for fifteen years.

John has served as organist at Ryde Parish Church for over twenty years and was chairman of the Isle of Wight Festival of Music, Drama and Dance for thirteen years. In retirement on the Isle of Wight, John has found the time to write his first book, The Vackie Heroes, based loosely on his time as an evacuee in 1941–2 in Ilfracombe, a place which holds many happy memories for him even of those dark days. The story is based on the author’s memories but the events are complete fiction. The book is available in hardback, price £8.95, at Ryde Bookshop or can be ordered from other bookshops and is also available online or direct from the publisher.

FRESHWATER PARISH COUNCIL By the time this Report is published, it was hoped that we would see the completion of the road works in Avenue Road. Unfortunately, we have just been informed by Island Roads that the scheme will be delayed until March next year. Whilst this delay is very disappointing and frustrating I know that reasons include the need for investigation by Southern Water Services into the historic drainage problems. It has also been recognised at long last that there needs to be extensive road works carried out in Princes Road which have taken priority. So I am hopeful that at least there will be some long term benefit. Rest assured we will continue to put pressure on both Island Roads and the Isle of Wight Council to ensure the Avenue Road scheme is completed as promised. It is also hoped that with the support of local businesses forming the Avenue Rd Business Community (ABC) we will be able to create and maintain a more attractive area that benefits our community. With the recent acquisition of Freshwater Library, we will be undertaking some minor improvements over the coming months. These will include provision of a disabled toilet, improved kitchen and servery and some external repairs. It is not envisaged that there will be any short term interruption to the service. We have also just taken over the ownership of Stroud Recreation Ground and have set up a team looking at potential improvements. Should you have ideas or suggestions we would be pleased to hear your views.

I welcome Rapanui to Freshwater who now operate from the former Co-op. This vibrant and successful young Island company brings some good employment prospects to the West Wight. I am sure that their move to Freshwater will be a major opportunity for all. Last year there were many positive comments on the Christmas decorations through the Village. With this in mind Freshwater Parish Council have resolved to add to the decorations so I am sure this will help us all get in the festive mood. Should you wish for more information on any of the above topics, I can be contacted via the Clerks Office. Mike Wheeler Chair. Freshwater Parish Council

A Hearty Homemade Soup We are coming into soup season and you can’t beat a homemade one… one of my favourites is butternut squash (this can also be done with pumpkin or a mixture of both) and I like to make a big batch so I have plenty left over to freeze and then I can just take it out the freezer in the morning and hey presto a home cooked soup for your evening meal with some nice fresh crusty bread!!! The beauty of this one is there is no fine chopping so it is quick and easy.

Add the cumin, coriander, chilli flakes and salt and pepper and cook for 5 minutes ensuring they don’t stick to the bottom of the pan.

You will need Knob of butter Tablespoon of oil 1 medium butternut squash or pumpkin, peeled, deseeded and cut into rough chunks. 2 medium onions, peeled and cut in to rough chunks 2 cloves of garlic 1 red pepper cut into chunks 1 teaspoon of cumin 2 teaspoon of coriander Salt and pepper 800 ml of vegetable or chicken stock Chilli flakes (optional)

• Crown lifting & • Maintenance & thinning pruning of shrubs • Reduction & shaping • Cultivation & cleaning of borders • Dead wooding • Grass cutting • Tree felling • Hedge cutting • Stump removal We can offer a one-off visit or regular maintenance visits For further info call 07850 489754 or 404720, or email adrian.kensit@btinternet.com

Add the vegetable or chicken stock until the vegetables are covered and simmer for 30 minutes or until all the vegetable are tender. Keep an eye on the stock level and add more if necessary. Remove from heat and carefully add to a blender, and blend until smooth. Return to the pot, and mix in any remaining stock to get the desired consistency.
