Welcome to the October issue of Island Magazines and you are probably, like me, wondering where the time has gone and how could we be in Autumn already! The weather has changed recently and you can feel the chill in the air especially early morning and in the evening although we have still had some nice sunny days. If you are a dog owner you’ll be pleased to know that from the 1st October our little furry four legged friends can once again play on the beaches that were out of bounds to them during the summer season. I know my own little dog Alfie, will be excited by this news. October is a bit quieter on the events side than previous months but there is still plenty happening across the Island and you can find all the information in our ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on pages 10 and 11. If you have an event happening please feel free to email the details for inclusion in future issues. Once again this issue is packed with news and information and I hope you enjoy reading it. Until next month....

Hare Piece This month our front cover star has got me asking the question ‘are you running to, or from somewhere’!!?? This particular hare was caught mid stride by local photographer Nick Edwards. Many of you will already be aware of Nick’s work and the dedication he has towards photographing local hares, initially to provide data for surveys being conducted by the Isle of Wight Natural History and Archaeological Society. It has now spread beyond our Island’s shores and Nick’s photos of hares are appealing to a wide audience, appearing in several national publications and calendars. You will find him out at dawn and dusk on an almost daily basis patiently awaiting the close approach of his popular photographic subject.

Hares aren’t the only topic of Nick’s amazing photography skills and his website www. wightseen.co.uk is home to his collection of pictures of varied subjects captured here on our beautiful Island. News report from Cllr Steve Hastings - Central Wight Mobile: 07870127024 E-mail: steve.hastings@iow.gov.uk Twitter - @cllr_hastings Fire Service Consultation - Just as a reminder there is a review of the fire service and we now know that the consultation on the potential Combined Authority with Hampshire, Portsmouth, Southampton and Isle of Wight is open until 26th October. This can be found at www.hantsfire.gov.uk/ consultation. Paper copies can be obtained by calling 023 8062 6815 or by emailing hfrsconsultation@hantsfire.gov.uk, I would urge you all to take part in this consultation to let them know your views.

little change, however when the draft proposals came back there were quite considerable adjustments to ward boundaries and there relationship to Town/ Parish boundaries and a reduction in the number of Councillors to 39 so as you can imagine this has caused quite a stir amongst Councillors and indeed some uncertainty for the future. Anyone interested in more information can go to; https://consultation.lgbce.org. uk//node/12655

Warm Up Wight - This would be a good time to point out that there is an initiative on the Island, supported by the Isle of Wight Council to offer a free, fully funded service to any household in the area to upgrade insulation before the winter arrives. I have used this service and it is very easy to access, all you need to do is telephone the Warmfront team on free phone 0800 032 8322 or the local operatives who are very good and courteous on 07510924970 (Chris) or 07401045823 (Lee). They will come to you on an appointment to do a survey of loft and wall insulation and if your property qualifies and needs more insulation, they will arrange for the installation team at J and J Crump to make an appointment to install and all at no cost to you. The energy companies and the Government cover this cost in order to meet our carbon emission reduction targets.

Empty Homes Meeting - I called a meeting recently with the Leader, Deputy Leader and officers to discuss empty homes on the Island and in particular the applications that have been given planning permission but not completed. These are often just sitting there and not being put into use whilst the owner has an investment increasing in value. I think if we are giving planning permission in good faith, we expect these homes to be made available or the planning permission should be revoked.

Boundary Review - The Isle of Wight Council is in the midst of a boundary review being run by the Local Government Boundary Commission for England which is due to conclude in January next year. The submission that the Council put forward after consultation with Councillors had very

This was a positive discussion and very soon a report will be going to the Cabinet Member for Housing to give approval and then through The Cabinet to produce a policy for the Council to follow their right under the Town and Country Planning Act, section 97 to revoke the permission. This follows a report on affordable housing that has been through the committee that I Chair and sent to Cabinet for approval and implementation. We really must do more to help Islanders to afford their own home and if this means the Council has to get directly or indirectly involved, then so be it. continued over the page

Water leaks in West Wight - I recently had Friday & Saturday until 9pm a conversation with a Senior Manager at (9 and 12 inch with choice of toppings) Southern Water regarding a long-standing Eat in, take-away & delivery water leak on Main Road, Brighstone and he now assures me that they are ‘finalising a risk BYO beer and wine assessment for the repair and scheduling it in‘ Both the District Steward and myself had reported this leak repeatedly. Whilst this is good news at last, I wonder why it has taken so long to get around to, especially as we have had such a long dry period this summer.

I have been suffering from back pain, I’m not alone in this common complaint but something changed this day and I finally pulled my finger out and have done something about it – I did some research, I asked around, and then I made the phone call to a friend of a friend who is a yoga teacher and there ladies and gentleman is how I have taken the first steps on my journey. We have discussed what I want from yoga, how I envisage it fitting in my life, my goals and much more.
