Welcome and thank you for picking up a copy of Island Magazines. We are now into the autumn months and no doubt like many you have been busy packing away the summer wardrobe and unpacking boots, jumpers and coats in preparation of the crisp mornings that will soon be upon us. Autumn is one of my favourite times of the year and we are very lucky living here with the countryside on our doorstep and amazing scenery that changes with each season. For dog owners its great news as it means our furry little friends are now allowed to play on all the beaches around the island. Halloween is at the end of the month and although the island is slowing down after summer there are still events happening and you can find our ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on pages 14 and 15 You will find the latest news and information for your area inside along with some great local businesses advertising their services. I hope you all have a great month and I look forward to catching up with you soon.

Freshwater Parish Council

Working For The Community. Cllr Anne Bamford

Parish Clerk After being our clerk for the last five years Michael Mills has now left us as he has moved to Cornwall. I would like to take this opportunity to thank him for all of the work he has done during a time of great change when our parish had to take over the management of more land, public toilets and the library from the County Council. He gave us steady guidance to help us develop and move forward. For the time being Emma Carter is now our Acting Clerk. Badgers Sett at the Library In July the sett behind the library was looked at by a Protected Species Company Ltd. It was found that the main tunnel is being used as there are several setts nearby that are likely to be linked to it. For Health and Safety reasons a decision was made that there was a need for them to find alternative accommodation and the sett closed under licence. There will be a 3week exclusion period and then the tunnel will be filled in and the bank area to be proofed against further digging by badgers by using chain-link and then the ground re-seeding. This work will be undertaken over the next few weeks. Library The parish council purchased a sofa for families visiting the library to have a comfortable place to sit and read.

4

Land Management As a parish we do have a large number of trees that we have to look after. After a recent survey it was found that the Elm trees along Brookside Road, Queens Road and Blackhut Green had to be removed due to either disease or damage.

Bins New dog and litter bins have now been purchased by the Parish Council and will be installed around the parish. Hopefully this will help with overflowing bins in certain areas. Book Fair Thanks to all the authors, publishers, booksellers and venues who made the first Freshwater Book Fair possible, and thanks to all the book lovers for attending and supporting the different events.

Have you ever thought about how hard your feet work for you? Yet many of us neglect them and underestimate how important they are... in many cases they go the extra mile but along the way certain issues can crop up such as ingrowing toenails, corns, hard skin, verrucas and fungal infections, to name a few. It may be that through medical issues such as diabetes and the fact that none of us are getting any younger, even simple tasks such as nail trimming and cracked heels can become difficult to take care of and that is why you should always seek the help of a professional, and Steven Long not only ticks this box but he also offers a mobile service so all treatments can be carried out in the comfort of your own home, whilst relaxing in your own armchair. Steven is always happy to discuss your requirements and welcomes you to call him on 721987 or 07799 334900 to discuss how he can help you and make your life that little bit easier.

Early Detection Gives You a Fighting Chance One man dies every 45 minutes (around 11,800 men every year) from prostate cancer and it is now the leading cancer found in men but statistics show that if caught in the early stages, treatment is 80% effective. Mention the words Prostate Cancer and PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) Testing and most men will immediately conjure up an invasive and embarrassing testing procedure but in reality it is a simple blood test that is pain free and takes less than 5 minutes This simple BLOOD TEST measures the amount of antigen produced by the prostate entering the blood. It is not a diagnostic/direct test for cancer, but gives an indicator of the health of the prostate. Regular testing showing an increasing reading can indicate a prostate problem, a high reading should trigger further tests to determine if there is a need for any treatment. Unfortunately despite the increasing number of prostate cancer diagnosis and mortality, there is not a regular screening test, and some GP’s are reluctant to offer a PSA test to men over 50 years. Without screening, around 47,000 men are diagnosed General symptoms with prostate cancer each year. of problems with

the prostate are

50% of all men will have a health problem with their frequent need to prostate at some stage of their lives. It could be an urinate especially infection, enlargement or cancer. 15% will develop at night, bursting to prostate cancer and those with family history of the urinate, slow flow, disease or of African-Caribbean origin are 3 times difficult or painful (45%) more at risk but the main thing to think about flow, stop/start is that early detection gives you an above average fighting chance!!! dribbling, or blood in the urine The Charity Isle of Wight Prostate Cancer Support Group in partnership with Ryde Lions are offering FREE PSA blood testing for men aged 45 to 85 years on 19th October at Ryde Academy, Pell Lane, Ryde, PO33 3LN The testing will be conducted by trained phlebotomists taking blood from a vein in the arm, this will be analysed at a hospital laboratory and after a report has been produced by a Urological Consultant, the result will be sent to the person being tested within 7 – 10 working days. Every 45 minutes another man dies 6

I believe that Island people deserve to be listened to and have their issues represented properly to government by putting Island People First and at the centre of democracy. I would vote for the needs of our Island People, be transparent, inclusive and community focused.

I believe that our Health & Wellbeing comes first and that Education can be used to bring change, positivity, employment and reward. We need more NHS and Teaching staff to reduce waiting times and raise education standards. I believe that our island is changing for the better and that we continue to work together within communities to change attitudes, support one another and create our own destinies. Regeneration is not just about building houses it’s about creating better employment opportunities, family choices, mental health and environment matters and it requires improved investment. NEW FYTbus DIAL-A-RIDE SERVICE TO St MARY’S Do you have an appointment at St Mary’s Hospital, or do you want to visit someone who’s an in-patient? FYTbus is starting a new Dial-a-Ride service on 1st October, from homes in West Wight direct to St Mary’s Hospital and, on request, on to the Cowes Red Jet terminal for people heading to Southampton. The service will run twice a day on Tuesdays and Thursdays to arrive at St Mary’s at 10.00am and 1400 pm, and its focus will be on those who need to attend appointments either at St Mary’s or at Southampton Hospital, as well as for those who may be visiting inpatients. See local posters and www.FYTbus.org.uk for details. Return fare for this door to door service will be £6.00 per passenger. If regular visits to the hospital are needed, it may be worth requesting appointment dates and times which fit in with these services. Places on the bus can be booked by telephoning the FYTbus office (01983 752917) at least 36 hours in advance (leaving a message if there is no reply) and giving the passenger’s name, location, phone number and date of travel. FYTbus will respond on the morning prior to the travel date requested, confirming the exact time when the passenger will be collected from home. At the present time, FYTbus is not able to accommodate passengers in wheelchairs – if this is needed, or if you need further information, please contact the FYTbus office. 9

News report from Cllr Steve Hastings. Mobile: 07870127024 E-mail: steve.hastings@iow.gov.uk Twitter - @cllr_hastings Island Plan and Housing Numbers Our MP Bob Seely has been visiting Town and Parish Councils across the Island to get support for his campaign to reduce the numbers in the Island Plan and it was a pleasure to stand shoulder to shoulder with him on this matter when I visited with him to Newport and Rookley recently. It is clear that the Island is a special case and we have never been able to build the numbers in the existing plan due to the complications and expense of the build here, getting materials and workforce to the Island means developers are only willing to build 3 - 5 bedroom houses in order to achieve the profits they require and these are generally for retirees from the mainland thus not satisfying our housing needs. The good news is that the Council are now building a housing strategy, which will be revealed shortly which through proper procedure would reduce the numbers in the plan and deliver through a Council owned development company the right affordable homes for Islanders and as the Council owns the company we can build without concern about extra profit to make them viable. This idea was developed within the Council’s Regeneration Scrutiny Task and Finish Group and approved by Cllr Abraham and the Cabinet last year within the Affordable Housing Report headed up by Cllr Outlaw when he was Chairman of the committee and approved under my Chairmanship of the same committee.

So we need to join forces with our MP and take this to Government to show that we are a special case and only insert a sensible and achievable number of houses of the right type to satisfy our housing needs for Island residents. New Retaining Wall for Brook I have been talking with Island Roads recently to get an update regarding the erosion at Brook, which could soon affect the iconic Military Road. The good news is that they are preparing a planning application for a 25-metre retaining wall to protect the road from erosion for the next 20-25 years. This application has to be in consultation with Natural England, The National Trust and Ecology Officers to make sure it fits with the environment it will be installed amongst. There will be an opportunity for Parish Councils to have an update as this goes forward and I will be presenting the plan to the West Wight Association of Town and Parish Councils in October. I hope this would be as good a job as Island Roads made of the Brighstone Viaduct, which looks fabulous. Ground evaluation, planning scoping and ecology tests are all happening now so if you see equipment and some drilling into the ground in the Brook area that is what is going on. Island Roads should then be bringing a planning application continued over the page

News report from Cllr Steve Hastings continued Road Verges as Wildlife Corridors With the help of the Councils AONB Officers and the Parish Council we set up a workshop to examine how we can cut verges less and create wildlife corridors with greater biodiversity across the Island. I was pleased to have an invite accepted by Plantlife to come and present to the workshop and the Environmental Forum at County Hall afterwards. This was very useful and encouraging considering we have made a start but have further to go in getting our cutting regime and timings right to enhance our road verges. By cutting less and more sensitively we will produce more attractive verges which will be better for biodiversity with more wildflowers for our pollinators to thrive upon so that our wild verges can OPEN FOR BUSINESS become wildlife corridors. INES TAR NEC ES CH PEA ES RI ER CH

We also had representatives from Island Roads at both the forum and the workshop, which helped with the understanding of their work on a day-to-day basis and for them to hear what Islanders would like to see. There is a new report due out very soon by Plantlife, which we eagerly await and from our workshop a report will be produced by the AONB on our findings, which will aim at creating a broad strategy for road verges with guidance from the Isle of Wight Council feeding into Parish Councils and Island Roads in liaison with their sub contractors so that we are all on the same page.
