Another month has passed, and our summer was extended with some beautiful sunny days in September. As I write this the sun is still shining but there is now a definite nip in the air both early in the morning and late in the evening showing us that Autumn is here. Autumn is a great season and I always use the time to have a good clear out when putting away the summer clothes and bringing out jumpers and boots. The island is a great place for autumnal walks, and we get to see the countryside change with the season. This is also the time of year when you need to give yourself a health check to get you through the next few months. As well as Covid hanging around, now is also the time when colds, coughs and flu viruses are looking for their next victims. On page 6 you will find some top tips on how you can help yourself and boost your immune system from local Nutritionist Michele Newton. Inside you will find the regular news reports and some interesting feature articles and advertisers. On pages 8 and 9 you will find the puzzle section, which is great for keeping your brain active especially while the nights are drawing in. I hope you enjoy reading this issue and I hope you all keep safe and well and I look forward to catching up with you again next month and in the meantime if you have any news you would like to share please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Freshwater Parish Council

Working For The Community. Cllr Anne Bamford

West Wight Heritage Centre

Our Parish Boundaries

On the 1st September IW Lord Lieutenant Susie Sheldon opened the West Wight Heritage Centre. As a parish we are pleased that we could support the Freshwater and Totland Archive Group to enable them to be able to use this shop to share their collections of work to the wider community in the heart of our village in Freshwater.

Not everyone knows where our parish boundaries are, and I thought it would be nice to feature one each month. These are the areas that we have to cover as well as the village itself. The signs do not always show the exact area and this is something we are changing with replacing the old signs with new ones.

Madge Joiner

The first one that I would like to mention is between Freshwater and Yarmouth. The line actually goes down the middle of the River Yar at the bridge. Not everyone is aware of our patch of land that we look after in this area. As you walk towards the bridge from Freshwater just past the boatyard on the left there is a tiny seated area with two benches. Shaun, our Facilities Officer has been busy recently completing maintenance work to improve the benches and appearance of the area. It is hard to see from the road but worth a look.

We were pleased that we could support the family by allowing them to use the bench near the school crossing as a memorial bench for her. It is amazing that she spent 37 years being the local lollipop lady. I know lots of people in our village have fond memories of her. It is important that she is remembered. Maintenance work at the Library I am sure you have all noticed the work that has been going on at the library. All the rotten planks have been replaced and the whole building has been repainted. Wider, replacement guttering has been put up to prevent the rainwater running down the walls. Shaun has been working on the front beds and we hope you notice the difference as you walk by. Planning Government changes are taking place and as a parish council we are working hard to give as much feedback as we can to make sure these plans do not affect the overall appearance and character of our village.

Local business Four Seasons Cooking Academy is owned by nutritionist and food safety specialist Michele Newton and she has some wise words for us all… “The colder months are approaching and now is the time to get your immune system fired up to help you beat any seasonal viruses that will be lurking around and to give you a fighting chance to keep yourself healthy and ready to fight whatever is thrown at you” Michele has kindly put together a few immune boosting foods and health tips to get us going. You can find more information on the Four Seasons Cookery Academy Facebook page. Tip 1. Jumbo Oats topped with Berries and a small drizzling of local Honey will keep blood sugars stable for hours. Tip 2. Please, please take a supplement from now until March at least. Even more important now. Go for a top strength tablet or spray. Many of us are low in Vitamin D, even with the lovely weather we’ve enjoyed. Tip 3. At the first sign of a cold/sore throat, make our tried & tested ‘potion’. 1/2 tsp Turmeric mixed into a paste with half a squeezed lemon and a drizzle of (preferably local) honey. Add enough hot water to make a ‘shot’ and down the hatch! Take 3 shots per day. Tip 4. Sweet potatoes contain your full daily need of Vitamin A and a third of your vitamin C requirements. Delicious baked, they will also keep your blood sugars stable. Tip 5. Garlic not only strengthens the immune system, but also has antibacterial properties. Tip 6. Vitamin C is essential for a strong immune system. Our body doesn’t store or produce it so include a variety of items daily, such as oranges and orange juice, peppers, kiwi fruit, broccoli, blackcurrants, strawberries and bananas. Tip 7. Green tea - rich in antioxidants - substances that can slow - or prevent - damage to our cells. Try to have 2 cups a day. The mint flavoured one is lovely. Tip 8. Dark Chocolate (+70%) is superb for our immune system. It contains iron, magnesium, manganese, potassium, zinc and selenium - alongside being a powerful antioxidant. Melt a few squares into hot milk to make a delicious - and nutritious - hot chocolate. Tip 9. Kiwi fruit has a packed list of nutrients. Exciting studies are starting to show that 5 per week can reduce asthma induced wheezing. Wow! Tip 10. WELLBEING...... we have all been sorely ‘tested’ this year and this lowers our immune systems for sure. Talk to family/friends about how you’re feeling; exercise and try to take each day as it comes. 6

Totland Parish Council News Parish Council meetings started again in September using Microsoft Teams. We had a guest speaker from the Wave 70/30 Campaign and members of the public also joined. Holding meetings in this way is very different but something we will continue to do until such time we can meet at the Parish Office again. During these times Councillors have also agreed to meet monthly again rather than bi-monthly. Various vandalism continues in the village with groups meeting at One Horse Field, lighting fires and leaving alcohol cans/ bottles. The West Wight Men in Sheds building has been damaged and Police are investigating this. The Skate Park and MUGA has also been subject to vandalism by bottles being smashed on the ground and fires being lit. If you have information on who these people are please either report to the Police or let the Clerk know. We continue to encourage people to take their rubbish home with them and ask you not to leave any of your rubbish on or around our beaches. During August and early September, the Parish Council supplied Biffa bins at both Totland and Colwell Bay to help with the large amount of rubbish. Open Spaces: The Parish Council have arranged for a pest control company to work with them to remove the moles from the Recreation Ground, Stokes Green and Turf Walk. A Christmas tree will be on Colwell Common again this year, however, the Totland Christmas Market will not take place.

Facilities in Totland. Is there something you would like to see in Totland that currently is not offered locally? Possibly more on the Recreation Ground? Please let the Clerk know either in person at the office or send us an email. Councillors would really like you to share your thoughts with them. Car Boot Sales: These have been cancelled for now. Recycling: Afton Marsh Recycling Centre – This is open and you can now take household rubbish, however, you MUST book a time. You cannot just turn up; you will be sent away. CONTACT DETAILS: Parish Clerk – Mrs Helen Gibbs - Telephone 756028 Totland Parish Council, Winchester House, The Broadway, Totland Bay, PO39 0AX. The parish office opening days and times are: Monday – Thursday 9.30am to 12.30pm. Email: clerk@totlandparishcouncil.org. uk or follow the Clerk on Twitter @ TotlandClerk. The parish council also have a Facebook page which is updated regularly. Your Parish Councillors’ are: Chairman Jan Cave, Vince Fennell, John Howe, David Filby, Steve Blamire, Helen Wood, Gareth Wyre and Hilary Benns.

Work with Maggie... Are you a health professional who is struggling with self-esteem, imposter syndrome, burnout, lost joy in your vocation? Or have you realised you are not happy in your current role, or you just need a change? Work with Maggie to understand your thoughts and pinpoint what it is you really want. Use her 16 years of expertise and experience in coaching, plus her 20 years of experience working within the NHS, to regain your confidence and build your foundation for your future. Sometimes it can seem to be too scary to be coached on your own, so Maggie offers group coaching. There is a powerful energy when groups get together for growth and transformation, both personally and collectively. We are all connected by that spark inside and work powerfully and compassionately when we connect with each other, especially when we share common goals of positive change. One client said: “Maggie intuitively knew that the path I was on wasn’t the way I truly wanted to go. She allowed me to see that my passions were elsewhere and opened my mind to the possibilities ahead of me. I changed my path and have never looked back. Maggie was totally right.” There is no such thing as a FREE seminar.

News report from Cllr Steve Hastings. Mobile: 07870127024 E-mail: steve.hastings@iow.gov.uk Twitter - @cllr_hastings

New retaining wall at Brook Island Roads are applying for planning permission for a 25m retaining wall to be placed at Brook to halt the erosion, which is rapidly approaching the Military Road at that point. This is within the contract with Island Roads and was going to be a bridge but it is now considered better to be a non intrusive retaining wall which can cover more area than a bridge would have done and at no extra cost. As the erosion is somewhat unpredictable it means that if it moves position then the retaining wall can be moved also to align with it unlike a bridge that would remain static. The solution proposed by Island Roads would not only extend the life of the section, it would do so in a way that is visually unobtrusive, give due regard to environmental considerations and which would allow natural erosion processes to continue. As such, an Environmental Statement has been submitted as part of the planning process. In simple terms, the plan is to install piles under the south side of the carriageway to isolate the road from on-going coastal erosion. The piles would be buried so would not initially be seen from either

ground level or from the beach/ sea below. It is anticipated that it would be between five and ten years before the piles become visible from the beach as a result of erosion. Island Roads believes the solution is compatible with various environmental designations that protect the location as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Area of Conservation. At the same time the scheme will extend the life of the road therefore preserving this important transport link for residents and visitors, between the south and west of the island.

Portfolio Changes I am very pleased to announce that the Leader has asked me to take on the Environment and Heritage portfolio following Cllr Hobart’s request to step down from the Cabinet in order to spend more time with his wife, Kate. Cllr Hobart will be a hard act to follow as he has been a very hard working Councillor and there is a lot happening in the portfolio but follow him I will and I am very excited to take this on as well as keeping waste Management within my portfolio which also has some exciting things happening going forward. continued over the page

News report from Cllr Steve Hastings. Cllr Hobart will still be dealing with the coastal path though until the end of his term as we approach the elections of 2021. Sir John has worked especially hard on our coastal path and it is only right and proper that he has the opportunity to complete this work in the coming months. I think once he has achieved the completion of the coastal path we should erect a statue for him somewhere on the path of his choice! For me, Environment and Heritage depicts this Island so I very pleased to be the latest custodian of this portfolio.

Next Year’s County Elections

cold, wind and rain, just deal with it from your sofa in front of the fire! The elections of 2021 have another twist to them as we have now had the decision from the Election Commission on boundary changes and my ward is to change considerably. The new ward with Brighstone in it will be called Brighstone, Calbourne and Shalfleet, they did want to call it just Brighstone but I objected to that, as the other villages would not be named. Unfortunately the maximum number of names for a ward is three so they wouldn’t allow Newbridge, Porchfield etc. to be added also.

Should I be chosen as the Candidate for Yes folks, it cometh around again and I the new ward, I look forward to working can’t believe we are back to election time with new Parish Council’s and to those again already; it has flown past and has moving ward, Shorwell in with Niton, been incredibly busy in the Council. What a Load of Rubbish… Waste disposal on the Island is an ongoing problem and the only way to deal with this is to ensure you use a reputable business which holds a Registered Waste Carrier Licence. This way you can be safe in the knowledge that any waste they remove from your property will be dealt with in line with all regulations and you will also receive a Waste Transfer Note. Wight Waste & Services is a local company owned by Luke Stagg and he holds the correct licence to enable him to collect domestic and commercial waste. Luke is passionate about the environment and aims to recycle 95% of waste collected with many usable items being donated to charity. Whether you have a pile of rubbish building up outside your house, shed or garage from either a recent ‘spring clean’ or just not being able to get to the council run amenity sites then Wight Waste can help. They also offer full and part house clearances and are ready to tackle even the most ‘jungle’ like gardens and will dispose of all garden waste. There has been an increase in fly-tipping on the Island and unfortunately Dinosaur Isle in Sandown were victims to this recently and thanks to the community spirit that Luke has he headed straight to the location and cleared and disposed of the waste for free. Wight Waste & Services are friendly, polite and offer quotes and collection at a time to suit your needs. They supply digital receipts and now accept all major credit cards so can always adhere to social distancing.
