Welcome to the September issue of Island Magazines. I can’t believe we are here already as it only feels like a couple of weeks ago that summer started. We have some beautiful landscapes on the Island and there’s nothing better than a field of hay bales, wheat or sweetcorn. Just travel less than five minutes from any town centre and you will be in the midst of the countryside with fields of all varying colours and crops. No doubt like me you have noticed the tractors, trailers and balers out in force going backwards and forwards at all hours of the day while they frantically work to harvest the crops. I’ve always had a keen liking for tractors so I don’t mind coming across them on the roads. I always add extra time to my journey at this time of the year and rather than stress I can relax and enjoy the views over some of the most picturesque landscapes in the country. This month we are giving a BIG shout out on behalf of Feline Welfare and some of their residents who are looking for their forever homes. Read more about them on page 17. I hope you all have a great September and enjoy the last few weeks of summer...

News report from Cllr Steve Hastings - Central Wight Mobile: 07870127024 E-mail: steve.hastings@iow.gov.uk Twitter - @cllr_hastings Climate Emergency Declared I was pleased to be in a position to work with Cllr Michael Lilley in forming a cross party motion to bring to Full Council in July. The motion passed and we have now declared a climate emergency and have an action plan to address the situation, which will centre on a task and finish group to get some facts and details together and report back on its findings. This will then go to the Environmental and Sustainability Forum, which is the main mechanism by which we will draw experts, officers, members and residents together to progress actions to reduce our carbon footprint on the Island to make it a wonderful place to live, work and enjoy now and for generations to come. There are some 170 other local authorities that have declared a climate emergency so, through the Local Government Association (LGA); we can lobby for more help from government, as we will all be facing the same sort of issues with attempting to become carbon neutral by 2030. The council is already playing its part in helping to reduce carbon emissions by: • increasing waste recycling; • building a new, environmentally efficient plant to convert waste into energy at Forest Road; 4
• using the most energy efficient heating and lighting systems whenever council buildings are refurbished; • supporting free insulation of homes on the Island with the Warm Front initiative; • looking to purchase electric vehicles; • supporting FYTBus in the West Wight in its endeavours to go completely electric with their fleet. Nuisance Rooks I have been contacted by residents of Brighstone regarding noise and mess from the number of rooks in the area. This has come about by the feeding of rooks on a regular basis, which encourages more to gather and wait to be fed in the early morning. I arranged for a visit from the council’s Community Safety Partnership Officer who has asked that residents desist from this habit. I would echo his request as these birds can be very aggressive and very noisy when continued over the page
News report from Cllr Steve Hastings continued gathered in large groups and of course create a lot of mess which has been affecting residents washing on their lines. Dog Fouling There has been a spate of extra dog fouling reports recently in the Ashley Copse area of Brighstone, which has been reported to the Parish Council who have agreed to install an extra dog bin in the area. I would also point out that extra patrols by the dog warden have been requested for this sector. This is something that is a problem in many other areas as well, so please be a responsible dog owner and pick up after them. I would like to point out that this is not the fault of the dogs; there are no bad dogs, just bad dog owners! Brighstone Show The Brighstone Show was a great success and very well attended as always.
later in the day and I have to say the standard of produce and flora on display was superb and well done to everybody who took part, there were no losers in that tent. Displays by dogs and birds were fantastic and it was good to see the donkeys at the show, looking fabulous. It was great to see all the vintage tractors and vehicles on display. Well done to Brighstone Horticultural Society for your hard work in organising the show it is much valued by residents. With best wishes, Steve
We were very lucky with the weather and Bob Seely MP opened the show in his shorts saying how warm it was. I was pleased to get a look with Bob at the judging in the tent prior to the opening

West Wight Pet Lifeline, based in Freshwater, provides an emergency service for lost, stray or unattended pets in distress across the West Wight area. Although a new organisation here on the Island, the Founders come with over 20 years of experience in large scale front-line animal welfare gained on the mainland. The group also provides an island wide response for certain types of wildlife casualty, these being the larger or more dangerous species that the public would not be expected to handle, such as foxes, badgers and swans. Recent calls that the group have been involved with include the trapping, neutering and return/rehoming of a colony of stray cats around Golden Hill Fort, with four adults and six kittens all having been taken into care over the last few weeks. They have also been involved with searching for lost dogs, scanning found dogs for microchips and reuniting them with their owners and attending seriously sick and injured stray cats in need of immediate veterinary care. Wildlife tasks in the last few weeks have included calls to badgers involved in road traffic accidents, injured fox cubs from Lake and Cowes, several different jobs involving injured swans and ducks at Freshwater, Ryde, Newtown and Sandown and calls to other birds ranging from a poorly cormorant to a woodpigeon stuck behind a fireplace. Their shop and information centre is located on Avenue Road in Freshwater and they’re always happy to meet people and tell them more about the work they do. You can also follow them on Facebook and, for all emergencies, call them on 01983 717740.
West Wight Pet Lifeline 01983 717740 If you would like to learn more about our work and how you can help us, why not call into our shop and information centre on Avenue Road in Freshwater. We’re located directly opposite the public car park and we offer all kinds of things for sale, ranging from giftware and pet supplies through to home-grown plants and wild bird seed. We are open Monday to Friday from 10am until 1pm and we’d be delighted to see you. You can also see some of the rescues and other work we do by following our facebook page.

News Report from Councillor George Cameron Email:- george.cameron@iow.gov.uk | Mobile 07701011481 I would like to give you one fact… and that is that the Isle of Wight is very rich in social values, this means local volunteers and voluntary services are working well together and understand the needs of their communities, more so than any other county in the country that I am aware of. We are lucky to have so many volunteers and people who take care of others here where we live. I am impressed by the latest group of volunteers who call themselves, The Real Junk Food Project IOW. They are teaching children how to reduce food waste and during the school holidays, they have been filling school lunch boxes with food from supermarkets that can’t be sold but is perfectly good to eat and otherwise would have been wasted. This is such a success and I thank Southern Co-Op Freshwater, Sainsbury’s Local, Freshwater and all the volunteers who worked so hard to make this possible. Freshwater Conservative Club kindly donated the premises to operate from during the school holidays and will continue to help with providing a venue for as long as it is needed. Well done all and may it continue. Anyone who wishes to volunteer or offer their services please enquire at Freshwater Parish Council offices at the Memorial Hall, we have quite a few groups who rely on volunteers such as the library, FYT Bus, Dimbola, Our place at West Wight Sports Centre and all the charity shops around Freshwater only to mention a few. In Totland we have the Men in Sheds who are doing a fantastic job; all will welcome anyone who is interested.
Freshwater village seems a lot busier than what I have seen in recent years, as usual, I encourage all residents to shop locally. I would like to welcome the two newly opened shops: Octopus workshop and Fuoco Pizza in Avenue Road, I wish you good luck and all the best for the future. All these businesses are part of the makeup of a village, which brings me on to All Saints School, it is also part of a village makeup and we must fight and do what we can to keep it open. Freshwater Early Years Centre operates from the site and boasts three OFSTED outstanding ratings in a row, this facility is vital to the community and I will certainly fight to keep them on site. As we are now doing much more about our environment, you can now buy organic cotton Freshwater beach bags which are available from the Parish Office and other venues around the village. Price is £4.99 and £1 from the sale of each bag will go towards funding new drinking fountains in Freshwater. Also plastic free shopping bags are on sale for £4.99 and are available from local independent shops including JCB Imaging, Artframes, West Wight Angling, Pet Lifeline, Coastal Mobility, P. J. Thorne Butchers, The Village Bakery, Freshwater Coffee House and Elloitts. Please support these projects.

Feline Welfare Isle of Wight
Registered Charity: 1084722
Feline Welfare have lots of adorable guests staying with them and all these gorgeous cats are looking for love and a place to call home. They range from 12 weeks up to 13 years of age and they all deserve safe, genuine homes with people who REALLY care. Some have had a sad start to their lives so will need time, patience and understanding, but even those who are timid initially learn to trust you and will be WONDERFUL pets. Here are just a few of the really special ones that want you to pick up the phone and call so you can come and meet them. Call anytime on 521778 For more in-depth information about each cat you can visit their website www.felinewelfareiow.co.uk. If you are unable to adopt or foster but would still like to help please consider making a donation to them in order that they can keep doing the good work that they do. You will find all the info on the website. Sylvester has had a tough start to his little life, but he is surprisingly confident all things considered. He is used to being with a large group of cats so would like to go to a home with one or two friendly felines. He will be timid initially but with love, patience and time he will become your friend for life. Vinnie is a mainly white boy and is 13 years young. He is a loving boy and needs a caring home in a safe area. He has always been a single pet and would like to keep it this way as he wants his own personal 'human slave’. He is very affectionate and just LOVES human company. He recently had surgery to remove part of his ear flap. He has recovered well and is raring to go !!!! Rupert (tabby/white) is 6 years old and he is very affectionate. He does get on with other cats but he may well take over his humans lock, stock and barrel, so more than one lap is essential!!! Rupert is such a contented boy and wants a home to call his own.
Garfield is looking for a loving, safe new home with someone who really cares. He is 9 years young and he needs a home as an only pet. He has recently had a tough time but he is still happy and content with life and has plenty of love to give.
Meet Lloyd (black/white) and Harry (white/black). These gorgeous boys are 2 years old and they are looking for a loving home where they can stay together. They are neutered and vaccinated and really are ready to start their new life in a safe and loving home. They are REALLY affectionate boys and will make gorgeous pets for their new ‘parents’ or should we say ‘human slaves’ !!!! 17
Totland Parish Council News The West Wight Community Parade and Picnic went very well on Saturday 3rd August. The route started at Moa Place and headed towards Colwell Common. Thank you to everyone who came out and supported but of course there is always room for improvement and next year we would like more people to line the streets and join in the Parade. The FaT Samba played on the Common after the Parade and the Freshwater Belly Dancers followed them. The Freshwater Ukelele group played for half and hour and we finished with Huxley doing his magic. This event will take place again next year and we will share information as soon as possible. Car Boot Sales on Colwell Common: The season continues and each Saturday until 28th September there will be a Car Boot on Colwell Common, (except 31st August). Weather plays a huge part with this and we will keep you informed on the Parish Council Facebook account if the event is not going ahead. The Parish Council will be supporting the West Wight Nursery, 1st Freshwater/ Totland Scout Group, West Wight Sports & Community Centre and the West Wight Men in Sheds with these events. Please come along and support these groups. Sellers can set up from 8.30am with buyers coming along from 9.00am. We ask all sellers to stay until the end as we want to build this Community Car Boot. Men in Sheds we have two sites for the Men in Sheds, West Wight are on the Recreation Ground and are there Monday, Wednesday 18
and Friday 10.00am – 3.00pm. We also have Totland Men in Sheds who meet at Turf Walk on a Thursday between 2pm and 4pm. If you are interested in being involved with this project, please do not hesitate to contact the parish office or just drop into either or both sessions. Totland Men in Sheds are looking after the benches and carrying out some maintenance works. If you would like to help please go along on a Thursday as above. West Wight Men in Sheds will be starting to paint the outside of the Parish Office, again if you would like to help drop into one of their open sessions and let them know. Meet & Eat This will continue on the first Friday of each month and the next one will be Friday 6th September. They meet at St Saviours Holy Family Centre which is on the FYTBus route B round. All are welcome. Foodbank The Parish Office will continue to be a Collection Point for the Foodbank and we welcome donations for this very good cause. Please support if you can.
