Welcome to the September issue which marks a special day for Island Magazines. You can find out more on page 9. I don’t think anyone can say we haven’t had a summer - at the time of writing this we have just come out of a heatwave and I like many others are thankful for the drop in temperature. It was at such an unbearable level but like with many things this year we got through it!!! I always rave about the wonderful scenic views and the countryside on the island. Just a five-minute trip out of any town centre and you will be greeted by fields and countryside of varying shades from the recently sown to the just harvested. I like nothing more than watching the tractors and machinery working the land, there is something calming about watching them cut, dry, turn and bale hay. I know some people do not like being behind tractors and trailers on the road but I think they are a great sight to see and at the end of the day they are only doing their job like we all are. This month’s issue is packed with news and information. I am always happy to receive emails and phone calls from readers and if you have anything to share with others please feel free to get in touch. I hope you all enjoy reading this issue and thank you to all advertisers, contributors and readers for supporting Island Magazines. I look forward to catching up with you next month. Best wishes and stay safe.

Follow the Sun During lockdown many of us took to our gardens and enjoyed the pleasure of growing a variety of plants, veg and fruit. One plant that was really popular with both adults and children was the humble sunflower. You don’t have to go far to see one of these cheery plants peering over the hedge or fence. These wonderful flowers can reach heights of up to 12ft with heads bigger than your hands, unless of course you are growing the dwarf variety which has a height of about 2ft. Sunflowers are known for being “happy” flowers, making them the perfect gift to bring joy to someone’s (or your) day. Young sunflowers track the sun, also referred to as heliotropism. A young sunflower’s face follows the sun from sunrise (east) to sunset (west) every day and repeats the cycle until maturity. As sunflowers reach maturity, it behaves differently. The overall growth of the plant slows down gradually, the circadian rhythm (their internal biological clock) ensures that the plant reacts more strongly to sunlight early in the morning than the afternoon or evening. A mature sunflower does not move with the sun throughout the day; rather, it just faces east. I feel that during lockdown the island experienced a ‘sunflower boom’… we have another few months to wait to see if a ‘baby boom’ also occurred!!!!!

News report from Cllr Steve Hastings. Mobile: 07870127024 E-mail: steve.hastings@iow.gov.uk Twitter - @cllr_hastings Motocross course at Chilton Farm Some three weeks ago there was a sudden increase in the level of motorbike noise here in Brighstone on a Saturday between 10 am and 4pm and I started to receive complaints regarding the noise levels, not least of which was from our MP who lives in Mottistone for the peace and quiet as I am sure most residents do. On investigation by way of a walk along the Military Road, I discovered that an impromptu Motocross course had been built on farmland at Chilton Farm. As I hadn’t seen anything regarding this from planning and it is sited in the AONB and indeed our Heritage Coast I thought I had better ask planning to look into it and regarding the noise levels, I asked Environmental Health to investigate also. I made a visit to the site on the day that Environmental Health were visiting to test noise levels and I have to say for the homes in the immediate vicinity it was very noisy and disruptive to their amenity. Planning Officers and Environmental Health put a report together that concluded; given the landscape harm, noise levels, harm to residential amenity and the ecology, this was not a suitable site for this kind of racetrack. I have to say that this was a very well organised group and the facility is good for giving residents of the Island something exciting and interesting to do so I have no problem with this events group themselves, it is just a case of the right thing in the wrong place and for the younger ones amongst them, it is a good way of keeping them occupied and off the streets causing trouble, so I would support the events team if they moved to a more appropriate site. Planning 6
Enforcement has now served a notice to cease immediately and soon after a notice was served to reinstate the landscape on the farmland. Litter at Shepherds Chine - As we move back into tourist time and lockdown eases I received emails notifying me of litter at Shepherds Chine which it would appear might be attributed to a lot of camping on the beach and around the Chine area. There was a lot of rubbish at the entrance way, which I reported to Island Roads who have the contract for picking up fly tips. As for camping on the beach I made enquiries with officers and asked them to look into this further. Meanwhile we still had a lot of rubbish on the beach to take care of so as it was a nice sunny day my wife, Beverley and I took to the beach amongst the sun bathers and swimmers enjoying themselves but alas we were there for another purpose and some three hours later we had collected four large bin bags full of rubbish and I am pleased to say that we removed a lot of broken glass and fish hooks! Diamond Races Announcement - I should say from the outset that whilst this event has been announced, it is not a done deal and I have had conversations with a number of residents and the Chairman of Brighstone Parish Council and I share their concerns. continued over the page
News report from Cllr Steve Hastings. I also share the concerns that Bob Seely MP has expressed, but to date I have reserved judgement on the whole idea until we have had a chance to express those views in public meetings either physical or virtual with the organisers present to answer questions directly, current circumstances permitting. There are clear financial benefits to the Isle of Wight and locally by way of community benefits as has been stated by the organisers but as yet we don’t know what form these will take. I know only too well about the issue of boy racers both in cars and on motorcycles and the various marked spots with flowers along the Military Road are testament to this, whether this has increased or not I am not sure as it has always been apparent, especially at weekends.
this would produce but would be welcome. From a personal perspective as I live in Brighstone, on Galley Lane, we hear the full throttle racing of motorbikes all the time but this is not new, due to the Diamond Race organisation as it has always been going on and if we can find a solution to this I would be very pleased indeed. I hear what has been said about the TT races on the Isle of Man and this is probably my biggest concern with the death and injury statistics there and these are the same people involved here (their clerk of the course would be clerk of the course here)
Residents have made some very good points regarding this area being an AONB and of course we now I have had regular have Biosphere conversations with Police status also. I am in the process of trying to leaders on the Island requesting greater get public meetings set up for all the local presence along the Military Road but have parishes and I am sure residents would always been told that they are short of wish to attend these to have the opportunity numbers so could not support this action, however we now know that more Police are of questioning the whole concept but also coming our way so I wonder how this would specifics with the organisers directly. benefit this area? Indeed we had a preliminary virtual meeting with the Chairs and Clerks of The Police have been active along the Parish Councils recently to get their feelings Military Road recently and made some and to make arrangements under COVID arrests and a number of fines for speeding conditions to hold consultations with local etc. but I don’t feel this is nearly enough. residents. The organisers are claiming to want to engage with the bikers in order to make them rethink how they behave on roadways and give training and safety talks etc. but again I don’t know how much benefit
I now look forward to community engagement coming soon.
Putting the Needs of Children First Jigsaw Family Support is a community based; small charitable organisation on the Island. They are a child focused organisation but work with all family members and extended family to provide a safe, stable and happy living environment during and following the separation and divorce of parents and other life changing issues. The September issue marks Island Magazines 10th Anniversary and never in my wildest dreams did I think back in 2010 that it would grow from just the one area to seven, covering pretty much the whole of the Island. The very first area was East Cowes & Whippingham and this was because at the time it was my hometown and had a real community feel. It was so well received amongst residents that I launched the Cowes, Gurnard & Northwood area in November 2011. 2012 was a very busy year and this was the year Island Magazines really stood out and a further three areas were added, Sandown & Shanklin launched in February, Ryde & Wootton in July and finally in October 2012 Freshwater, Totland and Yarmouth. These five areas kept me very busy for the next couple of years and then I started to receive requests from Newport residents asking if I was going to be producing a magazine for their area? How could I refuse... and Newport & Carisbrooke was launched in April 2014. Fast forward 4 years until September 2018 and the Bembridge & St Helens area was launched. There is real community spirit in these two villages and as this is what the magazine is all about it, it was only natural that this area would become the seventh area to be added to the family. I am lucky that I can say I love my job; I love what the magazine has become and how it has taken shape. When I sit down and think about the people involved each month it’s quite astonishing... Firstly, you have myself, all the wonderful advertisers, news contributors which are made up of Councillors and Parish/Town Councils, some of them I have been working with since the start, then the team of printers who print and pack it every month and then all the wonderful distributors who kindly allow me to fly in and out of their premises every month (now wearing a mask) and deliver a pile to them which they kindly display ready for the thousands of readers who come and pick up a copy to take home and read. Without them all playing their part there really wouldn’t be a local community magazine and we all work together like well-oiled cogs.

I hope everyone is looking forward to the next 10 years of Island Magazines, as I know I am! 9

Freshwater Parish Council
Working For The Community. Cllr Anne Bamford
West Wight Heritage Centre - The new sign went up on the shop this week and Linda and Freshwater and Totland Archive Group have been working hard to get things ready for their opening on the 1st September. The centre will be opened by the Lord Lieutenant of the Island, Susie Sheldon. Already new volunteers are coming forward to help and if you are interested please contact the parish office. Chestnut Trees at Queens Road - Over the last few weeks we have been concerned with the fact that the Island Breezer is going to be re-routed down Queens Road. As a parish we feel that this road is unsuitable because it is very narrow in places. Island Roads told us we have to cut the branches down quite near the trunk that overhang the road. One of our councillors is a tree expert and advised us that this type of aggressive work could kill the tree over the next couple of years. It would have been better if Southern Vectis and Island Roads had met with the parish to clarify the situation beforehand. Unsociable Behaviour in Freshwater This Month - Sadly, this summer we have had problems with youths mistreating our facilities both at Moa Place and Stroud. We have been proud that we have made sure that the toilets are compliant with the rules for Covid 19. Unfortunately, it only takes a few people to disrupt this. Some of the problems that our toilet cleaner has found are hand towels used to smear the floor in soap. Stones filling the toilet pans in both the Ladies and Gents. Soap dispenser ripped off to prevent the public being able to use soap to wash their hand and both toilet seats ripped off in the Ladies. If only
more respect is shown especially in these difficult times.
Glass bottles are being smashed both at the Stroud and in the Skate Park and Muga. Our Facilities Officer Shaun has had to clear it up on a daily basis to make sure the area is safe for both the tourists and residents. We had a report from a member of the public that on Friday 7th August four youths were trying to smash the Adult Exercise Equipment. At the allotments three sheds were broken into with the doors being taken off and tools missing. We would like to ask the public that if they do see any problems to contact the parish office. All incidents are being reported to Catherine Quinn our local PSCO. Stroud Play Areas - We have had an inspection from ROSPA and the Council’s Environmental Officer and we were pleased that the equipment was found to be safe to use and just minor repairs were listed for our maintenance team to deal with. Land Management - There was a site visit in July looking at the work that needs to be done in the pond area at Marsh Close. Many of the Willow trees need to be lowered and there were a number of dead branches that need to be removed. The pruning will enable more light to come through to the pond itself. Gate Lane Toilets - The working party put forward new drawings at our council meeting this month and they were approved for a rebuild to go to planning for approval.

120 years of Isle of Wight retailing comes to an end Beardsalls has been a household name on the Isle of Wight since 1901. Their first retail shop started on Shanklin Esplanade by John Beardsall. This family business has waxed and waned over the years, through 2 World Wars, storms, floods and numerous recessions. The retailer has always developed it’s offering to match the times, but now alas, with the advent of internet shopping and the near total collapse of high street business due to the Covid pandemic the time has come to shut its retail doors for ever. Four generations of the Beardsalls family have been custodians of the business. John’s son Bernard inherited the Esplanade shop upon his death and soon expanded into another unit in Regent Street, Shanklin, quickly becoming the Island’s very first ‘lending Library’. Bernard’s premature death meant that his widow and youngest son, Michael took over the reins and were soon joined by Mike’s wife Iris and his elder brother Peter. The shop expanded taking on new premises in Ventnor and developing the range of goods to include books, greeting cards and photocopy services. In 1999 Michael’s son Toby joined the team and further expanded into Ryde, Sandown and Newport. Toby Beardsall says “We have been on an exciting journey with Beardsalls. Some of our long standing loyal customers who dealt with my parents in the 60’s and 70’s have supported us through good times and bad, but now we must move on and develop a new business for the modern age” Beardsalls move into printing has enabled them to build on the heritage of the Beardsalls brand, maintaining the core belief of great customer service. Its Print Studio in Orchard Street, Newport opened in 2018 and will remain open and continue to develop services as Beardsalls has always done in the past. Printing is done on site and ranges from wrapping and signwriting vans to printing the magazine that you are reading now. Beardsalls retail may be gone, but the name should not be forgotten.
