elcome to the September issue of Island Magazines and as you know I always like to give a little mention about the weather...
In this last month alone, we have had a heat wave that at times was unbearable and we’ve also had monsoon season with serious flooding across the Island. To say it’s been unpredictable is an understatement. Let’s see what September brings us! In this issue you will find the regular news reports for your area and our ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on page 14 will keep you informed of local and community events happening across the Island. If you have an event coming up, please feel free to send us the details via any of the means below. For those who like a challenge our puzzle section on pages 12 and 13 will keep you busy for a while. We have some great advertisers and as always please support them as it’s been a rough 18 months for many local businesses. I hope you have a great September and I look forward to catching up with you again next month

Tractors…. For the past couple of years, the front cover of the September issue has been reserved for anything tractor themed! Two reasons for this… since a very young age I have always had a love of tractors and secondly when you live on an island, during harvesting season, you are never far from a tractor, ploughed field, farmland or dare I mention it stuck behind one in traffic. I have recently moved from my central rural location at Arreton and must admit I miss seeing the tractors, trailers and all manner of agricultural machinery passing my window. Thankfully, I have been able to satisfy my fix of tractors by tuning into the much talked after TV show, Clarkson’s Farm. When this was first brought to my attention I ummed and ahhed about watching it as I was no Jeremy Clarkson fan… However, I can be the first to admit I was wrong, and this is probably the best show I have seen in a long, long time. I take my hat off to farmers across the nation as I have learnt so much about farming, more than I could ever have imagined, much of this is thanks to Clarkson’s side kick, experienced young farmer Kaleb Cooper who also brought the show to life. I won’t ruin it by telling you anything more. It is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video and I rate it ‘ten thumbs up’.

News Report from Cllr Peter Spink - Freshwater North & Yarmouth Peter.Spink@iow.gov.uk Dear Residents, I am very sorry indeed for everyone who has been affected by the flooding throughout our area and the Island generally. While Southern Water has denied being solely responsible for this, it is clear that our drainage systems and foul water sewers cannot cope with the recent high levels of rainfall. I know that Councillor Chris Jarman has been, and continues to be, in discussion with Southern Water and I am grateful to him for his hard work. In addition, Mr Keith Herbert, Southern Water’s Area Manager, will be attending the September Meeting of the Council’s Policy and Scrutiny Committee of which I am a member. Please rest assured that we will want to hear from Mr Herbert how the Company proposes to rectify the current situation and whether it can realistically deal with further development on the Island. Concern was raised at the last meeting of Freshwater Parish Council, which I attended, about the current planning application re land off Birch Close. The land in question has been prone to flooding and development will only worsen the current situation. The Parish Council opposes the application, and you can air your view by visiting the Isle of Wight Councils planning page ref 21/00357/ FUL. Since my last news report the Public Consultation on the Draft Island Planning Strategy has ‘gone live’. Mr Paul Fuller, Cabinet Member for Housing and Planning will be visiting most areas on
the Island to explain the Plan and most importantly to listen to your views. You can take part in the consultation by writing to: Draft IPS consultation, Planning Policy Team, Seaclose Offices, Fairlee Road, Newport, PO30 2QS; or by visiting The Island Plan - Service Details (iow.gov.uk). Since my last message I have also been looking into individual concerns of a number of local residents ranging from badger sets to a further speed restriction on Halletts Shute/Hill Lane. Well, I think that’s about it for now. Peter Spink

Local and Vocal in Freshwater By George Cameron I would like you to join me in thanking our West Wight Sports and Community Centre for organising another successful Solent swim this year. The event took place on Sunday 23rd July after being rearranged from the 4th July due to bad weather. This event is the biggest annual fundraiser for the WWSCC and a total of 56 swimmers took part with a very early start from Hurst Castle to Colwell Bay. It takes a lot of organising and the volunteers that helped were amazing, the kayakers, Freshwater Lifeboat, Yarmouth Lifeboat and everyone else who made it possible to host such an event is brilliant and I encourage everyone to try next year to support this event. Dimbola Museum and Galleries opened their new exhibition called Iconic Jimi, this is running from the 14th August till the 31st October, and it is definitely worth a visit. The dedicated team who manages and run the museum are mostly volunteers and they are running the place like clockwork. Dimbola have year-round Julia Margaret Cameron images on display and have a constant changing of exhibitions like the current Iconic Jimi. Their exhibition of the 1970 pop festival paints a perfect picture of how the event unfolded 51 years ago. On your visit pop into the tearoom, Julia’s former salon for a cuppa and cake or something more substantial, it does come recommended and don’t forget their vintage camera displays. Whilst I am talking about charitable organisations and volunteering, I feel I must mention one of my favourites and that is our own community bus service, the FYT Bus which is run almost entirely 10
by volunteers. Like all other entities FYT Bus was severely hit by the effects of Covid but passenger numbers are improving and steadily rising by an average of 28%-30% since April this year. I remember arranging a meeting with the Chief Executive of St. Mary’s Hospital to see if we can run a service directly from the West Wight to St. Mary’s and back, well this has materialised, and the service is being used with around 20 trips per month to the Hospital. The FYT Bus shop in Totland is also busy and improving from the effects from Covid. I think this is a fantastic service and I encourage everyone to use the FYT Bus whenever they can, I was once told by a West Wight youngster that this service is only for old people. Well, I had to explain that FYT Bus is there for all to use and when I explained that this is a community bus for the community, he was well impressed, I hope he took my advice and used the service at the next opportunity. There are so many other organisations that I can mention here and if you have not been mentioned, don’t worry, I will get round to you next time, I cannot stress enough times how lucky we are here with a community that stands so close together in helping each other, as we had proof already with the epidemic and how local residents stood up to be counted, it is truly a privilege to live here in the West Wight. Please feel free to get in contact with me either by email gwc2212@gmail.com or call 07701011481 Till next time, stay safe.
