Welcome to the April issue of Island Magazines and what a month it has been!! Some of us finally got our wish and the whole Island experienced the joy of snow, but I am pleased it didn’t stick around for long and hopefully now we can await the arrival of Spring and let’s hope we don’t see too many April showers.
text or call Island Magazines on 07880 587 931 islandmagazines@gmail.com www.islandmagazines.co.uk

Monthly News Report for Carisbrooke by John Hobart. E-Mail: john.hobart@iow.gov.uk Mobile: 07717 716 663 The icy blast of winter that arrived in early March certainly made its presence felt. Excitement for so many youngsters, many of whom hadn’t seen the snow first hand before, but also very treacherous conditions, for the elderly or anyone trying to get around on the ice! Although the ‘Beast from the East’ was only with us for a couple of days the havoc it left behind was clear. Alvington Reservoir, which is up on the downs behind Carisbrooke unfortunately suffered from many burst pipes. It was feared that over 10,000 households around the Newport area were in danger of having their water cut off for an undetermined period of time…. as indeed happened in other parts of the country. Our emergency response was magnificent. The teams based at county hall included the fire brigade, police and our own council Emergency team. The volunteers who helped throughout were marvellous, and a special mention must go to those who offered their 4x4 vehicles to ferry emergency staff to their places of work. Southern Water pulled out the stops, working through the night to fix the damage and it was they who brought water bowsers and bottled water from the mainland to ensure that peoples basic needs would be met if the worst happened. I must point out to anyone unaware that this was a ‘Gold Alert’, the highest level, and it was due to the smooth management and the exemplary team working that many hardly felt the effects of the incident although the were aware that it was going on. 4
Whilst on the subject of water I have received questions regarding surveyors seen in the Lukely Brooke, the Mill Pond and in the Wellington Road area. This is because the Lukely Brook, which is a main river under the management of the Environment Agency, is currently failing the Water Framework Directive (WFD). This failure is because of several obstructions which stop fish migrating up to the head waters in Bowcombe. The surveyors/ engineers are looking at the obstructed areas with view to constructing fish passes which will enable a clear migration route upstream. These will only be installed when it has been proven that they will have no adverse effect on the flood mitigation plan.

Style and Comfort Over 25 years of experience, yet still keeping up to date with the latest styles, fashions and colours and all done in the comfort of your own home. Kirsty is a senior stylist and originally trained at Jaks in Newport where she stayed for a further 3 years. She then took time out to travel the world and settled back into Island life when she started her family. Kirsty decided not to go back to salon work and instead became a mobile hairdresser as she enjoys taking the stress out of having your hair done by visiting her clients at their home so they can relax and enjoy the experience. As well as specialising in wedding hair, Kirsty, is just as happy to offer family appointments, which makes life so much easier than trying to get the family to the hairdresser or barber.

The first day of April is a day for pranksters and jokers to try to catch out as many victims as they can in the annual celebration of April Fools’ Day. An April Fool joke is revealed by shouting “April fool!” at the recipient and in the UK the joking ceases at midday. Any person playing a joke after midday is the “April fool” themselves. Some newspapers and other media outlets report fake stories, which are usually explained the next day or below the news section in small letters. This year April Fools’ Day falls on Easter Sunday and whilst writing this I have listened to my friend plan to keep herself entertained by making the kids hunt for eggs she didn’t hide!!! Queen Victoria used to love playing April Fool jokes on her staff by pretending to be a window cleaner. She would turn up at Osborne House with a long ladder and a bucket, touting for work* *This may or may not be an April Fool

News Report by Julie Jones-Evans. Tel 521068 or 07792672198 E: julie.jones-evans@iow.gov.uk T: @juliejonesevans F: Julie Jones-Evans Results are starting to come in from Shaping Newport the project that will produce a place plan new Newport to enable improvements and proper growth. The team have started by producing a register of what we have already in Newport and it’s quite impressive when you see it. Newport Parish area has… •350 listed buildings and monuments •A castle and cathedral (nearly) •2 Roman villas •3 rivers •A 13th Century town centre •50 protected wildlife areas •3840 acres of nationally important landscape •30 pubs •4 theatres and cinemas •An internationally famous music festival •65 restaurants, cafes and takeaways •20 schools, colleges and learning centres •25 public and civic service centres It’s clear that Newport is the civic, educational and economic heart of the Island. It’s also a good choice for a night out! I’ve been part of a Night Time Economy project in Newport that is looking to show what alternatives exist to alcohol based evening entertainment. The IW Council has been granted some funding to bring positive alternatives for people to do. The planning permission for Post Office Lane public toilets has now been granted, so we can now move on with that project to provide high quality toilets and a pleasant seating area. We are hoping to get South Street toilets open soon, however they need some
repairs following on from water damage due to the freeze in February. Car boot sales may be coming to Newport in a couple of months time on the Harbour, on Sunday afternoons. Volunteers have come forward that want to run the sale with proceeds going towards supporting Newport Carnival and putting on community events in the town. I’m sure it will be a great success and it’s great that volunteers want to give their time up to help our town. The Beer and Buses event run by the Campaign for Real Ale and the bus museum bring a huge number of people from across the Solent, to ride on classic buses and sample regional real ales. Newport Parish Council are going to support this year’s event and if you have any ideas about how please let me know. Perhaps we could commission Newport beer to be brewed especially for the weekend?

A Cute Looking Long-Tailed Tit... The amount of talented photographers and wildlife we have on the Island is amazing and this months front cover picture is all thanks to Scott Newman who has captured this exquisite long-tailed tit in all its glory. This little bird is so cute and looks like a tiny ball of fluff. Scott told me “this photo was taken from my kitchen window. Two of them recently started to fly to my window frames, peering through the glass as they gripped onto the rubber surround. After a few hours I was able to snap photos of them as they went to and fro between the window and my washing line... probably no more than 2 metres away”. Scott has a passion for photography and remembers sitting in a darkened room looking at slides that his dad had taken whilst doing National Service in Aden and photographs his Mum had taken with her Kodak Instamatic but it wasn’t until later in life that this hobby really took hold. He originally started photographing bands in pubs and festivals and also liked to dabble with drawing but then invested his money into a good camera and equipment and his passion for wildlife photography grew. Scott is a self-employed gardener which allows him to work outside whilst earning money for photography equipment. Working outside also gives him access to a multitude of amazing insects that look great in ‘macro’ photos. If your garden would benefit from the skills of a professional gardener then feel free to call Scott on 07989045183 or 855765.

Bringing the Surgery to your Doorstep by Dan Forster
The Mobile Vet provides an Islandwide veterinary service in their bespoke mobile vehicles and also have a fully equipped veterinary surgery at the IOW Pet Centre, Watergate Road, Newport. New services on offer include CT scans and laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery. They are the only vets on the Island to offer these services. Laparoscopic surgery is standard for all human patients as it is significantly less painful. The surgery involves operating through two tiny incisions in the abdomen and utilising cameras & specialised tools through the holes. Patients are up and about much faster than an old fashioned spay. No more head collars and owners do not have to take days off work to look after their pet. After securing several awards for customer service & innovation, including a recent Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Innovation and a trip to meet the Queen at Buckingham Palace; the team continue to offer a personalised approach with extended consultation times at the base & in clients’ homes allows the Mobile Vets to connect more with their patients/clients. Although the option to visit the base or have a home visit allows diversity, the home visitation service remains at the heart and soul of the business which continues to focus on providing an exemplary customer service whilst maintaining a professional and caring experience for its patients.
