Welcome to the April issue of Island Magazines. The year is chugging along nicely and Spring is definitely in the air. April is sometimes a wet month but ‘April Showers Bring May Flowers’ and if we are heading into a lush summer like last year then the flowers and trees will appreciate this extra bit of rain that may or may not happen. Easter is a bit later this year with Easter Sunday on the 21st April. The shelves in the shops are full of chocolate goodies and traditional eggs (and some have been this way since Boxing Day). Hopefully the weather will be good and perhaps this will be the start of the barbecue and picnic season. The Island is definitely coming alive again after a sleepy winter and you can find details of events happening across the Island on pages 12, 13 and 14. Watch out for April Fools on the 1st day of the month!!!!

News Report by Julie Jones-Evans. Tel 521068 or 07970009908 E: julie.jones-evans@iow.gov.uk T: @juliejonesevans F: Julie Jones-Evans One year from the first results from Shaping Newport and we are already in the position of applying for funding to improve our town for residents, employees and visitors. Newport has been selected by the IW Council to be put forward as the Isle of Wight’s bid to Government for town centre regeneration funding. The Future High Street Fund totals £675m across the country and local areas have been invited to put bids in for funding for projects between £5m and £25m that will turn around the fortunes of their shopping areas. This only applies to areas that can prove their need and because we have already done a huge piece of work (Shaping Newport) and have areas of Newport that have high levels of deprivation, we are already part way there. We often say that the Island is 40 years behind the rest of the country and in this case it is a good thing. We have retained so many of our old buildings compared to other areas that have built up, faceless town centres. Future High Streets Funding and Historic High Streets Funding used together could transform underused and dilapidated buildings, reusing them for social spaces for instance. Art and culture can lead regeneration, rather than shopping (which is due to 6

decline still in tradition shopping areas). It’s also important to focus this investment on the needs of our residents which is why we are including more investment into the People First Zone for the town, making it easier for everybody to move around confidently, especially those with any mobility issues. Having secured £300k from planning contributions (106 monies) it means we can begin with some of the small schemes, such as 20mph, pavement widening and continuous pavements. This will just start to nudge drivers behaviour to think of people first when they are in town and give people confidence to venture out, walk to school and maybe cycle more. This should lead to a few less cars on the road which again will improve the walking and cycling environment. We have another new history tour to announce. Every Tuesday, 12pm at the Minster, you will be guided around and told about the fascinating history of the church. Hear the story of the Elizabethan pirate buried there and the tragic tale of a royal princess. They also have a great coffee shop with homemade cakes which I could recommend for a mid morning pit continued over thepage

News Report by Julie Jones-Evans continued stop when you are in town. History is proving a great way to bring people together and we have had an offer of a show and talk from Brian Greening which we are really excited about. The parish council is now having more meetings at Victoria pavilion, Newport Victoria recreation Ground and following a make-over it is proving to be a great venue. We have a skateboard club there at the moment as part of our commitment to provide activities for young people. A new karate club has just set up there too, running a few classes a week. To promote all that is available on 23rd April in St Thomas’s Square there is going to be a display of all the organisations and clubs that put on activities for young people, as it’s often that people just are not aware of all that goes on.

A new member of staff has just joined the team at the parish council to help look after all our sites and in particular Lisa will be helping to run events and improve Victoria Pavilion even more for the whole community. You can call the parish office on 559119 if you are interested in having an event or regular class at the pavilion.

The planting for the moss garden on Hunnyhill is taking root and in a few months the area will be look much better and also the moss helps clean the air on this busy road, making the environment cleaner and greener. I’ve got another site at the top of Holyrood Street that will be having a green makeover too this year. It all helps improve the area for everyone to enjoy. I’d like to send out a big thanks to Independent Arts who run the Anxiety Cafe every Wednesday morning at the hall at Methodist Church in Quay Street. By combining a safe space to be, a lovely cup of tea, empathic trained staff and creative activities such as felt making and photography, they have made a great difference to people’s lives. If you feel you may be suffering from anxiety do pop in its a very welcoming and supportive group of people. Thank you too Island Magazines for letting me communicate with residents every month, these last 5 years have flown by! Happy 5th birthday, I know many people enjoy reading the magazine, well done!

Monthly News Report for Carisbrooke by John Hobart. E-Mail: john.hobart@iow.gov.uk Mobile: 07717 716 663 I’m pleased to say that work has been completed on footpath/cycle path N60, from Priory Farm lane to Wellington Road, giving a safe and sustainable route to all local schools from Carisbrooke and Gunville. I had the pleasure to meet a local cyclist on the path recently who said that its the first time in many years that he has been able to go along there on his road bike. Hopefully the brief inconvenience when the path was being done is negated by the now pleasant and highly useable route. In the same area, finally, after years of investigation the brick wall separating the terrace of houses from St Mary’s church yard has been rebuilt and looks very smart and tidy. This wall was becoming quite dangerous as it had a bulge which was heading for collapse. Hopefully it will now have many years of life. I recently attended a presentation warning of the potential invasion of Asian Hornets to our shores. These Hornets predate on bees and other pollinating insects. One hornet can kill up to 50 bees a day and they hawk around bee hives seeking out their prey. It is essential to be on the look out for Asian Hornets in February, March and April particularly as the queens emerge and if you think you have seen

10

one it is essential that you report it. Please go to www. nonnativespecies.org or visit the Facebook page ‘Isle of Wight Asian Hornet Watch’ where you will find images to help you identify the hornets and their nests and it will tell you where to report your findings. Also on the subject of predators, there has been a move by the Roy Dennis Foundation (see his website) to re-introduce White Tailed Sea Eagles to the Island after the last recorded pair disappeared over 200 years ago. They have been very successfully reared and are thriving in the Scottish Isles and Orkney and are no longer endangered, although are a protected species. I am very concerned of the impact this might have on the island as they are raptors who predate on small animals such as lambs, piglets, chickens and wild fowl. I also think our red squirrels could be very vulnerable. I recently watched a video of one carrying off a full grown swan. Whilst magnificent and impressive with their 8ft wing span, I cant help wandering whether they are are suitable residents for our small Island...and as they are protected, if it doesn’t work out, we can ask them to leave! It was a great pleasure to attend the ceremony giving Dr Desmond Murphy, the founder of the Mountbatten Hospice, the Freedom of the Borough, the highest accolade that the Council can give. Dr Murphy, after a successful career, came to the Island in 1981 and as a full time consultant in respiratory medicine on the Island he also saw the need for a hospice. Without his great beginnings our wonderful hospice would not be here today.
