Welcome to the April issue. I’m not sure where to start this month, but feel that I have to mention the Coronavirus outbreak that seems to be the only topic in the news at the moment. It’s a very unpredictable time with nobody really knowing how this is going to pan out. We must continue good hand hygiene and just take it one day at a time.

Now on to something positive... whilst I’m writing this the sun is shining and I have washing on the line and it seems to be drying. Let’s hope this is a sign of what is to come.

News Report from Cllr John Hobart for Carisbrooke and Gunville. Email: john.hobart@iow.gov.uk Mobile: 07717 716 663 I popped into the Records office at Hillside to see how the New User Session was getting along in Early March. The New User Sessions are aimed at those wishing to research their family, house or other local history. It can be daunting if you don’t know where to start and these sessions guide people in the way to progress and get the best out of the archives. The session was full and if you are interested in attending one of these it’s a good idea to contact the records office for dates and to make a reservation. The Records office only has a small congregational area so numbers are limited to only 12/15 people, but well worth attending. Whilst talking about the Records Office I can tell you that we are currently seeking to move to a new location in, hopefully, central Newport. The idea is to have a more user friendly and more modern venue with good public access and space to display more of our historical effects. We are being urged to do this by the National Archive who are not happy with our current location (and haven’t been for some 20 years) we are in regular discussions with them (their next planned visit is 6th May) and at their behest have just
done some remedial works to the current site. This is important as our records should remain on the Island, but sadly if we are unable to maintain them safely we may lose them to the mainland for safe keeping. Keeping with the subject of heritage, I have to say that I was astounded at the near perfect condition of the mediaeval ring (over 500 years old) that was found near Godshill by a metal detectorist. The gold finger ring depicts St Margaret of Antioch spearing a dragon through the mouth. The ring is also decorated with letters which translate as ‘graciously accept’ or ‘accept with gratitude’ — a phrase that is often associated with wedding gifts. The ring is currently on display at the Guildhall in Newport and certainly worth a look. On the 8th of May the Gunville Association will be hosting a VE Day Celebration at the Methodist Hall on Gunville Road to commemorate the 75th anniversary. On the day a continued over the page
News Report from Cllr John Hobart for Carisbrooke and Gunville. commemorative bench will be unveiled on the green space beside the Chapel. The day is aimed at being totally inclusive and a chance for adults and children alike to dress up and get into the spirit of the 1940s (even if you can only dig out a hat!!) As always I’m sure this will a fun and sociable day. The IWCC is currently in the process of appointing another tree officer with the specific task of auditing the locations and health of trees in our parks and public spaces. Trees are very much in the forefront of our minds, with the government aim to increase Britain’s woodland cover from 13% to 19% ( at an estimated cost over 30 years of £15bn) and our own knowledge of their valuable contribution to locking up carbon and combatting Climate Change. Finally, as I write the Island has only two cases of Coronavirus, it would be great to think that could be the same when you read this. With our vulnerable older population we must all be mindful and follow the hygiene and socialisation guidelines. Keep well.

Not Gone… Just Relocated! Visitors to the hospital will have noticed that The Friends of St Mary’s have moved from the foyer cafe at the main entrance to make way for a commercial outlet. The new Friends’ cafe is now located in the north end of the hospital, next to the Outpatients Department. Although it is “very much smaller” the volunteers are staying positive. Chairman, Lesley Myland says “it all feels a bit strange at the moment for the cafe not to be in the foyer, but we are determined to carry on serving patients, visitors and hospital staff with our cafes, the twice daily trolley service to the wards, and from our brand new shop. As you know, every penny of profit we make goes to assisting the hospital to buy equipment which makes patient and staff experiences better. Please keep supporting us as you always have so that we can build on the £1.5 million we have already raised in recent years. The new shop is bigger and we are improving our range of refreshments, cards and gifts. We are in a better position now too, as we open directly on to the main corridor opposite the reception area at the front of the hospital. So that has been an exciting challenge”. You can still find the Friends serving refreshments at the Laidlaw Day Hospital and now at their new location. You will find their usual good coffee or tea, sandwiches, toasted teacakes, a variety of snacks and newspapers. And of course the usual warm welcome and good service they have been providing for 32 years at St Mary’s. Don’t forget that they are also in the Ryde Wellbeing Centre. 6

News Report by Julie Jones-Evans. Tel 521068 or 07886 437688 E: julie.jones-evans@iow.gov.uk T: @juliejonesevans F: Julie Jones-Evans At the last meeting of Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council a total of £2054 was donated to IW Scouts to help young people get involved in the many activities available through the Scouting movement. Community groups are able to apply for funding, just contact the office on 559119 to ask for details. Most donations are under £500 and you have to demonstrate local links and benefits. Details of the new waterless urinals were also discussed with members and it was agreed that they be installed in South Street men’s toilets managed by NCCC. Whilst the demolition work is being carried out in Post Office Lane it’s important that we are working at full capacity in South Street. The new installation of toilets in Post Office Lane have been delayed whilst Island Roads process the footpath closure application. I’ll keep you updated of course. Shaping Newport will hold a community forum on April 1st to discuss the High Street Heritage Action Zone, at the Riverside Centre at 2.00pm. Everyone is welcome to join in and see what this project will be about and how you can get involved. Tea and coffee provided. The Community Speed Watch cameras have been ordered and residents are welcome to register their interest in volunteering in the scheme. Many residents across Newport and Carisbrooke complain of speeding vehicles and it’s a way of gathering valuable information to help the police. Other town and parish councils will be able to hire the equipment to carry out speed monitoring in their areas too. 8
A special meeting of the Council will be held to look at the IW Council’s Masterplan for Newport Harbour - date to be announced - which will be held in public. Here is the link to take part in the consultation and let them know how you feel about their plan. https:// iwightinvest.com/newport-harbourmasterplan/ The Council agreed to progress with the move to new offices for NCCC which has an accessible meeting room available, will give an enhanced working environment and present a significant cost saving to the Council. It will be a shame to leave the Guildhall but there’s not really enough room for us to work effectively and efficiently, especially with significant projects like the High Street Heritage Action Zone coming up. Plans will be made for improving the Guildhall so we will still be part of those discussions to make our permanent home there. The Open Day at Newport Victoria Recreation Ground and Pavilion is confirmed as 4th April, details will be in the newsletter that will be delivered to households. Residents are invited to give their views on possible investment into the Pavilion and Vectis Field. Facebook is a great way of staying connected with each other and what is going on across the Island and beyond. Shaping Newport and Newport Community Council have active pages where details of events, news, consultations are posted regularly. You can catch up with news in this publication and you can message me too.

If you are being, or have been, subjected to domestic abuse - emotional, psychological, financial, physical, sexual etc. then take the first step and get in contact via hello@breakthecycle.org.uk or by calling 754666. Over 900 years ago, an order of monks founded a hospital in Jerusalem to care for the sick and injured Christian crusaders, the name of that order was the Order of St John. Gaining popularity and strength throughout Europe the order continued to care for what was quoted as “their masters, the blessed sick”. Although dissolved by Henry VIII in England during his reign, the message of the order was never lost. First reformed in England in the mid nineteenth century, the St John Ambulance Association published its first aid manual in 1877. 10 years later, many were recognising the need for some form of organised care for the victims of accidents, so in 1887 the St John Ambulance Brigade was formed, performing its first public duty at the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria. Just 2 years after that first duty, in 1889 the Isle of Wight gained its first St John Ambulance Division, linked to Sandown Fire Brigade. Since then St John has seen mixed fortunes, from being almost non existent in the years between the world wars, to at the height of World War 2, there being over 12 active ambulance Divisions 11 cadet Divisions cross the island, with over 600 volunteers. At many of the landmark events on the Island sitting quietly in the background, watching and waiting to help, have been St John Volunteers. Be that at small school fetes, up to the first Isle of Wight festivals, through to the Cowes Week regatta. Today, St John Ambulance, Isle of Wight has just 3 active units, Badgers, for children aged from 7, a cadet unit for children aged 10 and upwards and the adult unit for everyone over 18. Both of the youth units offer children a range of activities, and not just first aid orientated. For volunteers in the adult unit, there is the offer of full training to become an event first aider, advanced first aider or even as crew on the unit’s emergency ambulances. Volunteers don’t need any prior experience; however, the unit also welcomes healthcare professionals, doctors, nurses and paramedics wishing to become volunteers. Volunteering costs “An excellent team people only their time. offering an Our youth team meet weekly on Tuesday evenings between 6.30 and 8 and our adult volunteers meet weekly on Thursday evenings between 7pm and 9pm.
